Welcome back to The Daily Show.
My guest tonight is a former Fox News anchor and author
of the new New York Times best-selling book,
Be Fierce: Stop Harassment and Take Your Power Back.
Please welcome Gretchen Carlson.

Welcome to the show.
Thank you so much for having me.
This must be a little bit weird, uh,
for you to be at The Daily Show,
uh, after parting ways with Fox News.
It would be sort of like, if I left The Daily Show
and went to, like, hide out at Breitbart a little bit, right?
-(laughter) -Totally.
And I'm so glad that I could provide so much comic material
-for you over the last few years. -(laughter)
-There was a lot of material. -I know.
-(laughter) -A lot of material.
Um, you know what?
This is an interesting scenario for me
because there are many things, like, I could talk to you about,
you know, with regards to your views, Fox News,
the ideas that you spoke about on air,
but honestly, your book and the reason you're here
and the reason I invited you to the show goes to something
I believe shouldn't be partisan in any way.
I agree with you.
And that is, unfortunately, the issue of sexual harassment.
You wrote this book, you came out with a story.
Tell me about going public,
because I think people take for granted
what goes into the experience
of going public when you've experienced, or when you've been
on the receiving end of sexual harassment.
Well, thank you so much for asking me that,
actually, Trevor, because
it's an excruciating choice for any woman to come forward.
And when I dove off my cliff
by myself on July 6, 2016,
I had no idea if I had a safety net below.
And the revelations that we've seen
over the last few weeks, as horrific as they have been,
I am just so proud of all these other women and men
who've had the courage to come forward like I did,
because my favorite quote is,
"One woman can make a difference,
but together we rock the world."
-And look at what's happening right now. -Right.
I didn't expect to be the face of this issue.
I didn't expect to have a dispute at work.
But you know what?
When they decided that my 25-year career
that I had worked so hard for, the American dream...
When it was decided for me that that was gonna end,
I decided if I don't speak up, who will?
And I really did it for my children
and for everyone else's children
because none of us want this for the next generation.
When you-when you look at the culture
of the environment you worked in at Fox News,
over time, stories came out,
over and over and over again.
Uh, you look at the culture
that is contained within the building...
We now know-- and I guess we've known for a while--
that it wasn't specific to Fox News,
but that is where you worked.
What do you think contributes to that culture,
and what do you think you would change
if you could go back with power and change the entire place?
Oh, my gosh. That would be such a fabulous situation
-to be in. (laughs) -(laughs)
Um, I mean, first and foremost, we need men.
We need men like you who care about the issue.
I write a whole chapter in Be Fierce
about men who defend,
who reached out to me right away.
We need to change them from enablers and bystanders
to allies for women.
Please come forward and defend women.
That will really be the cultural change,
-the dynamic change within the workplace. -Right.
And-and, also, you know, please, please, please,
let's talk about how we raise our kids.
Let's think really more about how we raise our sons
to respect women in the home
so that when they go into the workplace,
-they respect their female colleagues, as well. -Right.
(applause)
The, um...
The biggest story that has broken recently
that is directly linked to your world
has been that of Bill O'Reilly paying out $32 million,
uh, personally, which doesn't include
what Fox had to pay out.
Um, you've been very vocal on Twitter--
you know, very presidential of you--
-um, about what... -(laughs)
about what Bill O'Reilly's been saying.
What was really interesting is one of his,
I guess, rebuttals was...
He said, "But look, here's a letter I have
"from Gretchen Carlson where she says,
'Thank you. You're a friend and a mentor.'"
And, you know, I could be conflating the two letters,
but basically it was the idea that you guys were cool
because you wrote him a thank-you note.
-Uh-huh. -How-how does... how does that apply,
and what do you think people need to wrap their heads around
when it comes to the idea of working with people
and getting along with people who are part of the problem?
All right. Well, first of all, who keeps thank-you notes
for nine or ten years?
And, second of all, hat tip to my parents,
who gave me Midwestern sensibilities,
to always write a thank-you note
-when you appear on a show with somebody. -Right.
So here's what I tweeted out: "So what?"
So what, I wrote a thank-you note?
That has nothing to do with
-sexual harassment in the workplace. -Right.
And by the way, sexual harassment is apolitical,
it's why I'm doing so much work on Capitol Hill right now
to try and change the laws to take the secrecy
out of parts of our employment contract
that keep this secret for women.
When somebody decides to sexually harass you,
they don't say to you first,
"Are you a Republican or Democrat?"
-I mean, they just do it. -Right.
And we've watched titans from both sides fall
in the last four weeks. So it is apolitical,
and this is why everyone should be concerned about it
as a societal issue.
And I am just so optimistic
that I'm gonna get a bipartisan support for this bill.
We're gonna change the landscape.
-Nothing gets done on Capitol Hill anyway. -Right.
So wouldn't it be great if both sides would come together
for this bill and do something for women?
Oh, it would be special if they could do something.
-Yes, definitely. And I... -Yes.
-I, uh... -And where would that bill end up?
It would end up in the lap of President Trump.
I feel like you just took us on an emotional roller coaster
-I did. -and we don't know how it ends.
We don't know how it ends, but we, we're excited to find out.
