During a Wednesday speech at the White House to promote the GOP tax overhaul, President
Donald Trump paused to let an African-American pastor give brief remarks.
�Leon and Maria Benjamin are pastors of New Life Harvest Church,� Trump said.
�Under our plan, they will get a larger tax refund to help them pay their bills.
They�ll receive a tax refund, this year, of $3,000.�
Emphasizing that the Benjamins have a �beautiful church,� Trump invited them up to the podium.
Leon walked up, before motioning for his wife to come join him.
Then, he began his remarks by praising God.
�To God be the glory!� he declared.
�On behalf of the Benjamin family and of course, Richmond, Virginia, we represent a
cadre of many families across the nation,� he added.
�African-American families, urban communities, and families all across need this now.�
�And it�s time for a change, and it�s time that we recognize that our president
is making good on his promises.�
Benjamin closed by promising to pray for Trump and his team as they �move forward and forge
ahead with this new future in America.�
After he was done, Trump returned to the podium.
�He can be my minister anytime,� the president joked, garnering laughter from those in attendance.
The event at the White House came several hours after Republican leaders in Congress
reached a deal on a final version of tax reform legislation, moving the bill one step closer
to Trump�s desk.
The new bill reportedly cuts the corporate tax rate to 21 percent, significantly lower
than the current 35 percent rate, but also slightly higher than the 21 percent rate that
was proposed in the House and Senate bills.
Moreover, the compromise legislation cuts the top individual tax rate from 39.6 percent
to 37 percent, according to Business Insider.
Another major compromise was made regarding state and local deductions.
If the bill goes through, taxpayers can choose either a SALT deduction or a property tax
deduction of up to $10,000, Politico reported, citing a congressional aide and �a person
familiar with the process.�
�I think we�ve got a pretty good deal,� Senate Finance Committee Chairman Orrin Hatch
told reporters, according to Reuters.
A Senate and House conference committee held a public hearing on Wednesday afternoon regarding
the legislation.
A final vote could come next week, The New York Times reported.
�We�re very close.
I don�t want to get out in front of the chairmen but we�ve very close,� Senate
Majority Whip John Cornyn told Politico.

Yes, well, apparently beating a guy who was incessantly accused of child molestation 24
hours a day by an obsessed news media that made no attempt to hide their giddiness at
being able to portray a Republican candidate as a demonic combination of Elmer Gantry and
Humbert Humbert apparently counts as some sort of victory in these times.
However, while CNN was reporting on the results from Alabama, Donald Trump was winning a surprise
battle in the Senate � and it could have much longer-term consequences for conservatives.
On Tuesday, the Senate managed to confirm Judge Leonard Steven Grasz to the U.S. Court
of Appeals for the 8th Circuit by a 50-48 vote, according to the Omaha World-Herald.
Grasz, who is pro-life, was given a rating as �not qualified� by the American Bar
Association, a group frequently known for clashing with judges who advocate conservative
viewpoints.
CBS News described the reason for the rating � the ABA gives out ratings of �well-qualified,�
�qualified� or �not qualified� � was pro-religious liberty language in his role
as Nebraska�s attorney general.
In that capacity, he called the Supreme Court�s Roe v. Wade decision �moral bankruptcy�
and warned of �grave danger� in recognizing same-sex unions from other states.
However, Breitbart noted that the ABA has now �recommended that state bars � which
as branches of state supreme courts are the actual government licensing authorities for
all lawyers � adopt a new legal ethics rule that could be used to punish, including stripping
law licenses from, lawyers who speak out or associate on certain conservative issues,
ranging from LGBT to Black Lives Matter to illegal aliens, and securing the border.�
This shift toward open activism, many felt, was part of the reason why the ABA was giving
Grasz a �not qualified� rating, with some Republicans even characterizing it as a �hit
job.�
For its part, the Trump administration has refused to consult with the ABA on judicial
nominations.
Much like the Southern Poverty Law Center, the ABA is another formerly respectable organization
that, at one time, did good work. It now functions as a shill for the progressive agenda.
While the vote was almost straight along party lines � Republicans Thad Cochran of Mississippi
and John McCain of RINOville didn�t vote � it was still a victory for a judge that
conservatives can be proud of.
No, it wasn�t the senatorial victory we wanted on Tuesday. But it�s a lifetime appointment
to a key position in American political life.
And it was proof that the administration isn�t going to be bullied by special interest liberal
groups like the ABA.

Trump Judicial Nominee Can't Answer Basic Questions About The Law In Disastrous Hearing
One of President Donald Trump's nominees for a lifetime appointment as a U.S. district
court judge struggled to answer basic questions about the law during a confirmation hearing
on Thursday.
Sen. John Kennedy (R-La.), had just five minutes to question the five Trump appointees.
First, he asked if any of them had not tried a case to verdict in a courtroom.
When Matthew Spencer Petersen, a nominee for U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia,
raised his hand, Kennedy focused mostly on him for the duration of his time.
Petersen, a commissioner on the Federal Election Commission who was appointed by President
George W. Bush, had none of the experience typically expected of a federal judge, a fact
that quickly became clear during the questioning.
KENNEDY: As a trial judge, you're obviously going to have witnesses.
Can you tell me what the Daubert standard is?
PETERSEN: Sen. Kennedy, I don't have that readily at my disposal but I would be happy
to take a closer look at that.
That is not something I've had to contend with.
KENNEDY: Do you know what a motion in limine is?
PETERSEN: Yes..
I haven't, I'm, again, my background is not in litigation as when I was replying to
Chairman (Chuck) Grassley (R-Iowa), I haven't had to um, again, do a deep dive.
Petersen then began ticking off his experience "in a decision-making role" at the FEC.
Kennedy interrupted him:
KENNEDY: Yes, I've read your resume.
Just for the record, do you know what a motion in limine is?
PETERSEN: I would probably not be able to give you a good definition right here at the
table.
KENNEDY: Do you know what the Younger abstention doctrine is?
PETERSEN: Um, I've heard of it... but I, again.
