Two of my videos suddenly becamu unavailable and only show the message "Your video will be ready soon". These videos were uploaded in 2014 and were perfectly playable until recently. When attempting to download these videos, I now get the error message "Video is still processing & can be downloaded later". The "details" pane for those videos shows correct date and filename but the file size is displayed as "0 bytes".

This happens in Chrome browser on three different PC machines on several OSes and it also happens in the Photos App on my Nokia phone. It also happens to my mother who I've shared those specific videos with and who uses different computer at her home. So suggesting the fixes like "clearing the cache" or "disabling browser extensions\

I sure hope you can get your video back - maybe you saved it to a hard drive, or copied it to an additional cloud service at some time?  It sounds like it may have gotten corrupted at some point. 
One thing to try - did you check the "Unsupported videos" section of Google Photos on your computer?

I have a few listed there and I am able to download them by clicking the arrow to the right. Even though I can't find the video in my library at all.

Hello Chris. Unfortunately, there are no vides on my "Unsupported videos" page. I have uploaded hundreds of other video files made with the same camera and they are OK.

And, also unfortunately, I have no backup of these two important videos anymore. I had the backup for a few years but then lost it. This development is quite worrying for me as I have around 70,000 photos in Google Photos and everything worked great for me so far so I didn't give a second thought about making another backup. 

I have also searched for all the videos I have in Google Photos and scrolled through many pages of them. All of them appear OK except these two specific videos from 5 years ago, which immediately stand out because they have just a grey empty rectangle instead of the thumbnail.

I recently switched phones (Samsung S5 to iPhone 8). All of my photos from my Android phone were back up in google photos, and when I switched to the iPhone I noticed that duplicates were also created in google photos.

What would I need to do to get rid of the duplicates (sometimes there's even 3 or 4 copies) of these photos in google photos? I've seen a few people say that google photos recognizes duplicates but in this case, that's not .

Good afternoon. Google Photos does indeed recognize duplicates and will not upload any pictures that already exist in your account. 

If you're seeing what appears to be duplicates of the same picture, then there must be something about those images that is not exactly the same as the ones already in your account. 

Google Photos examines certain parts of image files and compares them to existing uploads to determine if that picture was already uploaded (the actual visual part of what you see in the picture is not examined). It looks at things such as the image file name, the file size, the date the picture was taken or modified, the GPS location, the camera model that was used, and other info stored in the photo's EXIF metadata. 

If you look closely at the duplicates you're seeing, you're probably going to discover that there's something about those duplicates that is not the same as the previously uploaded pictures. 

Unfortunately, there's no easy way to get rid of those duplicates. But, if the duplicates are appearing in your main timeline in the same place right beside the original upload, at least then you can simply select the duplicates and delete them. If they aren't appearing right next to the original upload, this indicates that the dates of those duplicates are not the same as the original (which would explain why they were uploaded at all...). If that's the case, perhaps looking at your photos in the order they were uploaded would make it easier to identify and select the duplicates for deletion.

Hi.

I've setup Photos to share with a partner (my wife). She made the same settings for me. We both set the setting to copy the photos from partner.
When I take a photo, she receives it and vice versa.
We set Photos to backup photos from Viber. When I share a photo to her through Viber I see the photo twice in my photos list in Google Photos. I understand that this is because her Photos backuped my photo from her Viber and then shared to me her copy of my photo, but I'm a programmer and I believe that there is a way Google Photos to see that there are two equal emages standing each other, taken into the exact same time. Maby there are technical differences between them, but I believe there is somethning that kan be done to improve the duplicates check. Google Images is abel to find image similar to a given one and when it finds such with exact match, it proposes different sizes from the exactly same photo. So there you are one solution. There might be some more optimal solutions too. This check can be done when a photo is uploaded. Another solution (maybe for the similar photos, which are not matching exactly) is: the assistant to tell the user that there are duplicates (as in Contacts) and ask if he want to merge them. But this should happen only if Photos couldn't merge them automatically.
I just look at these two photos and I think: there is something tobe done.

You are right. Duplicate prevention/detection is one of the most frequently asked features since Google Photos exists, but was never implemented. In theory exact duplicates should not upload, but the slightest difference (except title/path) triggers an upload, and there are many reports of duplicates anyway, for example when changing devices. 

The only thing you can do is send feedback, but probably hundreds or thousands already did. I am not optimistic. This is a user to user forum and we have no further information.

Deleting albums does not recover any space, since albums do not contain photos/videos. You must delete the photos themselves, which you can do from within the album: "More options" > Move to trash.

Even when you deleted the photos, it may take some time (days even) to adjust the available storage. That's an old issue which seems to persist.

Actually, it isn't possible to do this. Once you select a feature photo for a person, that image will remain the featured photo until you change it. So, the only option you have is to find a different picture to select as the featured photo.

I have done a workaround that works, though it might take a week or so, it is the following:

1. Remove the name label of the current person.
2. Select one photo and remove the tag, then tag it to a new face.
3. Add the name label to the "new face".
4. Go to the "old face" and add the same name label, this will prompt to merge it with the "new face".

This will move all photos to this new face which will be featured by whichever photo you changed the tag first, but after a while it will start auto selecting the feature photo as usual. Hope this helps.

Actually, it isn't possible to do this. Once you select a feature photo for a person, that image will remain the featured photo until you change it. So, the only option you have is to find a different picture to select as the featured photo.

It just downloads all the stickers to my gallery and then I have to go into my files and figure out where they are and delete them all one by one cuz it won't let me delete the dam folders and it puts each one in its own folder. I’m sorry, it’s not possible to recover photos permanently deleted from the Google Photos Trash. However, you may install to your Android device a deleted photo recovery app https://play.google.com/store/search?q=recover%20deleted%20photos&c=apps and run a scan for anything to recover.
 
In addition I recommend that you contact the Google Drive support team to see if any deleted files may be recovered. Just open the Google Drive https://support.google.com/drive/?hl=en&authuser=0#topic=14940&contact=1 contact form, click Missing or deleted files, select a contact option, and be sure to tell them you permanently deleted files in Google Drive.
 
If you already tried all this but didn't recover the photos, nothing else can unfortunately be done.

I haven't been able to re-create the symptoms you describe. 

Did you install any other apps just prior to the symptom happening?

1. Install any updates to Google Photos from the Play store and see if that helps.  If not, reinstall the application.
1. Launch Play Store > Left Menu > Installed > Photos > select app and then Uninstall
2. After uninstall, reinstall app and any updates.
3. See if share icon returns.
2. Try simply restarting the device to see if the normal operation of Google Photos resumes.
3. If that doesn't help, try rebooting in safe mode.
1. Hold down power button until you get restart message
2. Long press on restart to get option to boot in safe mode
3. Reboot into safe mode and launch Photos app. Is app performing normally?
4. If so, restart phone normally and check Photos app again. Did the performance return to normal or is the share option missing again?  If so, it might be another app causing the symptom. Look to any app you recently installed, and temporarily delete it or force it to quit to see if Photos performs normally.

Let us know if any of the above helps.

I haven"t added any new apps, but I did run Avast Cleanup Premium. I ran "restore" last night. This morning I uninstalled Google Chrome and reinstalled it. Still no "share" button.

None of the pictures you upload to Google Photos will appear anywhere without your express manual permission. None of your photos will be automatically shared to Google+ or anywhere else. 

If anything like this is happening, it means clearly something is wrong. First thing to do is make sure you're using the most current updated version of the Google Photos app on your device. Visit the Play Store and search for Google Photos. If there's a green button marked "Update" then press that to install the latest updated version of the app. Also do this for your other apps as well. 

Other than this, there shouldn't be anything to worry about. All of your pictures will remain private unless you purposely share them.

  • The photo without the edits done in Google Photo, that is:
    • the "Original" when uploaded with setting "Original"
    • the compressed "High Quality" when uploaded with setting "High Quality" (or later converted by using "Rocover storage"
  • The photo as edited in Google Photos (the one with -edited in the name)
  • a .json file with some metadata added in Google Photos
If you only want to download the photos as edited in Google Photos, you can download directly from Photos.  See this link for more info.

Hi all! I observed the following strange behavior of Google Photos:

When I create a duplicate of a photo on my iPhone and then edit (e.g. crop) duplicate, Google Photos deletes the original from GP (I then found it in the "deleted from another device" tab). That's not good because I want to maintain all photo originals, rather than the possibly wrongly cropped photo...

In one other case, I cropped the duplicate of a photo on my iPhone while offline. When I then went online GP only synced the original and even changed the cropped version on the iPhone back to the original, so the original and the duplicate looked identical.

Anyone has observed similar issues and knows what to do about it? How does GP in general handle if I edit photos on iPhone?

A while ago I made a movie on Google Photos and it was excellent. The pictures that were added to the movie took up the full size of my phone screen. Now however the pictures are really small in the middle of my phone screen, almost like zoomed out, and they're not maximised. Has anybody else had these issues? I bought a Samsung S9+ and cloned my previous phone on it (Huawei Mate 10 lite). I can see all pictures on the gallery and all the albums created on my previous phone are showing in google photos as intended. 
I then created a new folder on my phone and moved pictures from camera to the folder. However, I cannot find this album on google picture under "Photos on device". The pictures still come up in the camera folder. I can see all albums on google photos (even the ones I don't want to be backed-up) but the newly created folder.
Am I missing something?

Yup,you got it right. Google Photos & Google Drive are 2 different Products from Google.

Google Photos provides you a facility to Backup High Quality Unlimited Storage for your Photos on PC,Android or iOS whereas Google Drive is limited to 15 GB of storage.

In photos,you can only Backup your Photos & Videos whereas on Google Drive,you can Backup any kind of file you want.

Sorry John, you will need to compare manually side by side with your source files.  It might help if yo go to https://photos.google.com/search/_tra_  where the photos are presented by their upload date, Peter

Please note that a backup is only a backup if you keep your originals safe, removing the originals will leave only one copy on Google's servers.

It makes perfect sense and Google don't share their design principles or roadmap. It may be Work In Progress which needs prioritising by numbers leaving feedback.

To backup individual albums I would need to do it via the web and not the backup and sync windows app. The idea is for the app to upload all the photos then I can manually add them into albums. 

This is not the issue at hand

The problem is its taken about 4 hours and skipped about 4500 photos that are already backed up, bu the time it finds a new photo it could be days and all that time, power and internet traffic because it cant remember backing the photo up in the first place !!

Don't get seriously Ayush Kumar's suggestion, he is a newcomer in the community this month and doesn't seem to know how to answer  smartly your strange question.
As one possibility, I know the situation like that it was taken about 4 hours and skipped about 4500 photos that are already backed up every time Backup & Sync start up. First, make sure your situation is the same as what I am saying.
You should check the detail message from Backup & Sync by clicking the icon then "VIEW". If you see the message "These photos and videos are already in Google Photos\
