I have a recent (last week or so) string of photos that I have taken that Google Photos correctly shows at the top of all of my photos.  However, when I add these photos to an album it places them all the way at the bottom of all the photos like they were taken longer ago than all the other photos in the album.  I have gone in to where I can edit the date and time and the date, time, time zone, etc. are all correct.  Most were taken within the two weeks.  I have tried to delete them from the album and re-add them and I get the same result of them being placed at the bottom like the are the oldest.  I have tried to fix it from my iPhone and also from my Windows computer with no success.  I don't know what is going on.  Any help is greatly appreciated.

Last night and this morning I deleted a whole bunch of my photos in an attempt to free up my space that has run out not realizing the photos would also be deleted from my phone itself. Please help!

Answer:

Hi HJ Jun,

I’m sorry, it’s not possible to recover photos permanently deleted from the Google Photos Trash. However, you may install to your Android device a deleted photo recovery app https://play.google.com/store/search?q=recover%20deleted%20photos&c=apps and run a scan for anything to recover.

In addition I recommend that you contact the Google Drive support team to see if any deleted files may be recovered. Just open the Google Drive https://support.google.com/drive/?hl=en&authuser=0#topic=14940&contact=1 contact form, click Missing or deleted files, select a contact option, and be sure to tell them you permanently deleted files in Google Drive.

Question: How can I combine remote photos with local folder of photos on my computer without file overlap?

Online, Google Photos has over 1000 photos that have been backed up or uploaded. On my local computer, I have a folder with a little under 2000 photos. Many of these photos are duplicates of each other. To clarify, several hundred photos in my local folder have already been uploaded to the remote drive. You can assume that the remote photos are unique and the local photos are unique.

I'd like to upload only the NEW photos out of the 2000 photos and have them resized to "high quality" so that everything is consistent. If possible, I'd like to sync this combined folder to my local computer so that both folders are consistent.

Uploading all photos using the web interface would result in hundreds of duplicate photos, and google doesn't have a way of getting rid of them.

The backup and sync app allows me to ignore duplicate photos when I combine them which is great. However, when I've used this to sync photos, it does not resize my photos to "high quality". It uploads them as original quality. They show up as taking up space in google drive, and I end up with a bunch of different resolutions which is annoying. I believe that I can SEE them in google photos, but the result is not what I expected.

I believe that what I'm trying to do is almost exactly what backup & sync was designed for, but it just doesn't seem to be working. Part of the issue may be that I don't fully understand the difference between the "My Laptop" settings and the "Drive" settings. It involves two completely different sets of folders, and I don't fully understand how the two interact.

Can someone point me to a guide or describe the steps and/or settings that will allow me to end up with one consistent set of photos in Google Photos and my local computer without creating a bajillion overlapping files?

Answer:

Decided that getting google apps to do this was like pulling teeth, so I figured out a way to do it manually. In case anyone else is interested:

1. Download all photos on google photos to local folder. I used backup & sync to do this, but it could be done manually. AFTER everything is downloaded, disconnect from the account to stop syncing. Otherwise some of these steps could mess up the online photos.

2. I had one folder organized by month and another organized by year. Due to some technical stuff in the next step, this would have messed things up due to paths that don't match. Open the two folders in File Explorer, search for files with the * wildcard to find all files. Use control+a to select all. Use control+x for cut. I moved all these photos into two new empty folders with control+v for paste. So now, for example, I have two folders called "local" and "remote".

3. There is a free and open source program called WinMerge. There is an open button. I chose the "local" folder as left and "remote" as right. Next, run the comparison. In the "View" dropdown menu, I needed to turn off all of the "Show..." options from the top section except the "Show Left unique files". These are the "local" files which are not online yet. Note that I only checked by file name, so it won't help different files with the same file name.

4. After this was done, I needed to trick WinMerge to do something different. So I minimized WinMerge, open the "remote" folder, control+a to select all, control+x for cut, then I made a new folder somewhere else and control+v to paste in it. Just to be clear, the "remote" folder is now completely empty.

5. Go back in to WinMerge which is still running. Click in the list of files. Control+a for select all. There is a button for "copy to the right". Click that. This takes a while. When finished, the "remote" folder now has ONLY the UNIQUE files between the local and remote folders.

6. I used the web interface to upload all of these photos.

Complete and utter mess, but Google Photos now has ONE copy of each unique photo.

Unfortunately the Facebook app only allows you to select photos which are stored on your phone's internal storage so you cannot upload from Google Photos to the Facebook app without first downloading the image to your phone. Some apps allow you to select photos from other apps on the device and some do not.
You can share individual photos from within the Google Photos app to Facebook and it will download it and post the images directly to FB. You can share multiple images too, but for those it will just post a link to the Google Photos album.

I came back from a trip and have been slowly editing the location of the pictures via browser. There were many pictures and  I've created several albums (All maxed out with 2000 pics each).  I continued to go through the pictures today  when I noticed today, that some of the pictures were missing. I checked the album page and it said there were only 647 pictures in the album. I,353  pictures have disappeared from the album of 2,000 . I go on my iPad and check out the app. It correctly had the album at 2000 pictures but then minutes later it has been updated to show only 647 pictures were in that album. The pictures are not in the trash. And they don't show up on the recently added pictures page. I'm at my wits end. I  don't know what to do, or who I can reach to fix this bug?

I have been moving photos from albums to trash but am having second thoughts and would now like to keep them in the library but I definitely don't want them back in their albums.  I know how to recover them from trash but I don't know how to stop them from returning to albums.  Can anyone suggest a way please.

Also I found some photos were not in albums when they should have been so I moved every photo in the libraries to their respespective albums and have been deleting duplicates.  Some of these duplicates have exactly the same reference number and I'm worried that by deleting the duplicates all the photos with that number will be deleted and I will have lost them.  I have checked a few and this doesn't seem to be happening but can I confidently continue deleting duplicates with exactly the same reference.  The ones with orig or (1) after the number I'm not worried about.

Thanks
Keith

Answer:

"I don't know how to stop them from returning to albums."
I am afraid that there is no way to do that.

"I'm worried that by deleting the duplicates all the photos with that number will be deleted.  I have checked a few and this doesn't seem to be happening"
I am confident that it will not delete the duplicates, but more generally: it is wise to always have a back-up of all photos.

My camera at basic compression produces great jpegs of around 8 to 9 MB in size and 15.9 MP.  To get them onto google photos, I send by WiFi to my iPad (set to transfer original - no resizing there). I then upload through the Google Photos app.

I tend to turn off backup and sync while I edit the photos, then turn it back on when I'm ready. The photos then sync.

However, as soon as I delete the photos from the iPad after syncing, the filesize changes to around 1MB or less, and there is an obvious decrease in quality, with clear pixelation and a loss of sharpness and colour.  The same result appears when I view through my iPhone or using a laptop.

I have set the backup quality to high, not original, so I expected some loss, but even so I did not expect this level of quality reduction after reading various articles, especially given that the original megapixel count is less than 16MP.

Does anyone know why this is happening? Could it be an HEIF thing with the iPad route? If so perhaps I should upload through a laptop and not involve iOS, but surely that can't be right?

Please help!!

Question: Huge Hard Drive space used up by Application Support "UploaderTemp" file. Can I delete it?

Hi there,

Hi there,
My hard drive is quickly becoming full. In my search to free up some space I've noticed some very large Library Application Support files (5 of them) totalling 50 GB.
The file path is Application Support/Google/Drive/user_default/UploaderTemp. They seem to contain the mp4, mov & jpg files from my backup and sync google drive photos.
"My question is … If these files are Temp files, can I delete them without loosing the uploaded photos & videos stored in Google Drive Photos on the web?"
Thank you ahead of time for your help.

Answer:

@both
I am no "Backup & Sync" user, but since you got no reply ...
I also suspect that "temp" files can be deleted after the upload is finished. But I would only delete them when you are sure that you have them somewhere else AND in a REAL backup (no 2-way syncing).

Answer:

I have the same problem, and have been looking for an answer for quite a while now. Obviously there are others out there with the same problem. Nice if the Google team respond. ; )

Answer:

I played around with it on my Mac and found out that in short, yes, it's completely okay to delete these files.

UploadTemp is where Backup and Sync stores any new files from mobile devices (iPad, iPhone, etc - I'm a Mac user) that need to be uploaded into the user's Google Drive, creating a folder with those files and deleting it once the upload is complete. Something (likely a bug) seems to be causing the program not to delete those folders when the upload is complete, so you end up with those temporary files being stored until you go and delete them yourself.

Answer:

Can I safely delete it during uploading? Right now, that "UploaderTemp" folder is taking 500G my laptop disk storage as I'm using backup and sync to backup a 500G external hard drive. I have no patience to wait after the 500G is uploaded successful then delete it.

Answer:

That is big problem... my mac has around 500G OMG!!!!!!!!!!!
So I searched so much!!! but I can't find it solutions!!!!!!!!!
So I thought this was only my problem.
puuuuuu!!
So, is it okay to delete this data?

Question: Uploaded Video is Mirror Image

I have been uploading videos to Google Photos using the Upload button in Google Photos quite success…

I have been uploading videos to Google Photos using the Upload button in Google Photos quite successfully. But I just did one that uploaded in mirror image and upside down (all others are correctly oriented). I deleted it, and re-uploaded it,  and got the same result. It is oriented correctly and plays as it should on my PC. Any idea what is going on?

Answer:

Any help out there? Here is an image of the uploaded video

Answer:

I don't know why you'd see a mirror upside-down video. Is it just the one video that is doing that? What type of video is it (file extension)?

If you use a different browser to upload, does the video look wrong, also?

Answer:

Thanks for your reply! Of 36 video uploads, 4 are mirror upside-down. All formats are .mp4. I get the same results using Chrome and Firefox. Very strange.

Answer:

Yes, very strange indeed!

Were any of the 4 videos edited before uploading?
Do you happen to have a different Google account? If so, upload there to see if the 4 videos look OK there, or not.
If you clear the cache in Chrome and Firefox, then upload the 4 videos, does that help?

Please also send feedback to Google by going to https://photos.google.com, click the "Main menu" icon (top left) then click "Send feedback.

Answer:

Getting even stranger. I uploaded one of the 4 to a different account. I viewed a short segment of it, and It looked good. But an hour or so later, it was mirror image and upside down again!. I noticed it took a much longer time to upload than when I did the re-uploads in my account, so I thought maybe Google somehow knew they were in the wastebasket, and simply restored them instead of doing an actual upload. So I again deleted them from my account, emptied the wastebasket, and uploaded them again. Two came out OK, 1 was OK at first, but, like in the other account, it changed to mirror image and upside down within a couple of hours, and the last one was mirror image and upside down from the get go. I kid you not! This is weird!

I guess you could say all 36 videos were edited before upload. I'm transferring from VCR tape to digital using Diamond's One Touch Video Capture, and then editing them using CyberLink's Power Director 12 before "Producing" the .MP4 file.

Answer:

Thanks for testing it and providing details. I'll look around to see if anyone else has reported that problem. Meanwhile, please use the Feedback option to let Google know what's happening. They most likely won't get back to you, but it's a way to get them aware of the problem.

Answer:

Just another idea, have you tried uploading them somewhere else, like Microsoft's One Drive and see how it looks there?

Answer:

Great idea! Uploading all 4 to One Drive, but taking a VERY long time... hours. First one complete and look good - no mirror image and right side up. I did notice a big discrepancy in the file size. Google is 407.1MB; MicroSoft is 1.16GB. Is there THAT much difference in Google's "High quality" files vs." Original size"?  Other details: Google: 0.4MP, 854X480 size. MS: 4Mbps, 640X480 size.

And guess what: The one file I re-uploaded to Google yesterday that was OK is now upside down and mirror image.

By the way: I did send feedback to Google.

Answer:

today 9-13-2019 I have uploaded .mp4  vid  and it is  flipped over Y axis...i.e. mirror image, yet on the computer it plays OK.
Originally, when I loaded it on my computer from the phone it was rotated 90 deg. So I rotated it 270 deg using VLC, to get it right on the computer...and the result was good. Though uploading it to My Drive for sharing  (it is larger then 25MB, so it cannot be sent on Messenger or mailed through g-mail.) resulted in Y mirror.....

You could try a few options but there's no guarantees

I have used Takeout to get all of my many Google Photos.  So, I now have a new Windows folder called "Takeout/Google Photos" that has many sub-folders, representing my individual Google Photos albums.  The subfolders contain many JPG files and many JSON files.

I used Takeout to get the photo files because I know I have many duplicates or near duplicates in my Google photos.  I want to try to delete the duplicates.  So, I just want to get all the JPG files into a single Windows folder so that I can look at all of them together and delete the duplicate versions of each photo.  I know I can manually move all of the JPG files from each of the many sub-folders to a new folder.  But I am wondering if there is an easier way to accomplish my goal of finding and deleting duplicate or near duplicate photos.  I see that there is free software for download that claims to be able to find and delete duplicate photos.  If that is the way to go, can you recommend which such software is good?

I think that most "Duplicate finders" can indeed find duplicates without the duplicates being in the same folder.
  • I used Picasa3 for it (it does not eliminate duplicates, but shows them next to each other in a search result), but that is only recommended when you are already a Picasa user.
  • You find a few programs recommended by other users here. (see last part of article)
But ... Takeout in itself may contain many duplicates which are no duplicates in Google Photos.
  • It seems to download all photos in https://get.google.com/albumarchive where the same photo may be in an album you made AND in a dated album under "Auto Backup".
  • If you edited a photo in Google Photos, it will an edited and an unedited copy
How do you think to use the result if you succeed to eliminate duplicates on the computer ?

Thank you for your response.

You asked, How do you think to use the result if you succeed to eliminate duplicates on the computer ?"

My answer is that I now have many duplicates in my Google photos.  I have downloaded all of my photos through Takeout.  I am thinking that I now will try to delete the duplicate photos, and then re-post my photos to Google photos, so that my Google photos will then no longer include duplicates.

Answer:

@Robert
I think that, before you re-upload you will have to delete everything from Google Photos, otherwise already uploaded photos will be skipped. That not only is a lot of work, but you will also loose
  • all albums you made,
  • all shared albums (others you shared with will no longer see them, comments get lost),
  • all Definitions you added
I was thinking of another solution:
  • You can convert all photo to "High quality" (use "Recover storage" in
https://photos.google.com/settings) so that you get unlimited free storage and do not have to care about used storage.
  • Add ALL photos to albums with meaningful titles so that you easily find them. By doing so you will almost never feel the need to view photos in the library with all its duplicates: create a new album and either drag & drop photos into the album or use "Select photos". ALL photos will be added to the album, but photos that were already in Google Photos should not upload again.
Of course you select what suits best your needs.

MANY of my albums did not automatically transfer from Picasa to Google Photos.  I don't see rhyme or reason to why some did and some didn't. When I click on an album and choose the option to transfer to Google Photos, it asks me to login, which I do, I first get a message that says "fail to download album\

Answer:

Jessica, sorry, but there is no fix for this issue. Picasa's ability to upload/download was removed a couple of months ago. You will need to use the Google Photos Upload command, or drag and drop to get photos from your computer to Google Photos. Here's an article I wrote about this: Bad news about Picasa, but we were warned

Many were not even aware that Picasa was left unsupported in 2016 already, but Google said that we could go on with Picasa (also online) - so probably there is a new boss there who wanted to get rid of all specialities for Picasa.

And here: https://sites.google.com/site/picasaresources/Home/Picasa-FAQ/google-photos-1/how-to/how-to-upload-photos#TOC-Upload-for-Picasa3-users

Answer:

Nobody could have any idea apart from the very few people following the Picasa-forum from top to bottom everyday. See https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!category-topic/picasa/brvRowxSDcM

If you don't improve your pictures in Picasa (that is its basic function), you can upload straight from a folder on harddrive and then you will be able to create album. Just be aware that an album has a limit of 2000 pictures + movies). Else you need to save your edits per folder in Picasa first using the blue disc under the foldername.

PS: uploads will be slow compared to Picasa because you don't downsize
If you use the export workaround, you can downsize also as described in Picasa-broken?

One folder per day and you will be ready at Christmas :-)

Question: How to set google photos to display media files from google drive? video, photos etc

When I switched the option google drive on in the Google' photos settings, nothing happened. Thanks.

Hi Sponer,

It will take some time for those photos/videos to connect to Google Photos. I would give it 48 hours for it to completely sync (or more time if you have a lot of photos and videos in Google Drive).

Just make sure you are aware of the following exceptions to this not working:
  • You have to be the owner of the photos and videos, and the folder in Drive.
  • The photo must be larger than 256 pixels.
  • The file type must be JPG, GIF, WEBP, TIFF, or RAW. Learn about supported RAW file types.
Note: You can’t sync your photos and videos if you use your account through work or school. For more information, view the Help Centre article and let us know how you go.

Answer:

You should also see these photos in https://photos.google.com/search/_td_
You also get there by clicking the search bar > Show More > google Drive.

Hi Zondra,

I'm sorry to hear this but we can't help with because we're only experts on Google Photos, you'd be better off messaging the Play Store people, there should be a look to do this on the email receipt you got after paying for these gems.

I have followed the numerous threads regarding Google Takeout and .json files. I understand to actually extract my photos I need to remove the .json files added alongside them, but every time I choose the option to delete one of them, I get the error: 0x80004005. I forgot to mention this is on Windows 10 in the File Explorer. Is there some specific way to remove .json files? Also is there a way to remove them all in batch?

I want to create a movie mixed by different video & picture. So far so good, but I would like that when the movie shows a picture, the picture is not just showed still, which is abit boring within a movie, but instead with a slight motion (slight zoom in or out) called "Ken Burns Effect". Any idea?

Answer:

Hi Adimausp,

There is not an option in Google photos for this so you could leave some feedback. If you search in the play store you'll probably be able to find  movie editor app with that feature.

Answer:

Hi Nikki,
hope it willbe implemented soon, as it is really a difference comparing a Google Photo movie against an Apple one.

Answer:

Yes, me too. It's a great feature and has been used in the past, specifically I remember the movies created a few years back to show you highlights of that particular year.

Hi Dorothy,

I'm sorry but this is an Android question and not a Google Photos one so we're not the best equipped to answer this. I recommend trying asking this in a specific forum for your model of phone to get the answer.

Question: Photos across two accounts

Hi

I'm trying to use Google photos so that my partner's photos auto upload to my account and that she also has access to my photos in full (including the ones she shared).

I had it set up for her photos to share to me and back again to her. However, the issue with that setup is that the photos she receives back include ones in my account I have since deleted (so she has to delete them too) and it also does not save the albums, meaning my partner's view is just a great jumble of photos.

2nd attempt is leaving her sharing on (so photos coming to me) and then I've signed in as myself on her photos app, meaning she can switch to my account and see all photos in their sorted glory. This is great as albums are all the and it means we only delete photos once in the main album. However, Google sites not allow sign in just to photos, therefore my account is also pushed in to her maps, mail, contacts, calendar, etc. I have unticked the sync options for my account on her device, however it is still signed in for maps and mail (as there is no option to untick).

Can you suggest a solution where we have a shared photo account, with full album support, and not having my account signed in across other Google apps?

Many thanks

Wilf

Answer:

Hello Wilf, the only way to achieve that is to use a 3rd common account just for Photos on both your phones. I know this wouldn't resolve your Maps issue, but at least it's just a shared account and you can ignore it and just use it for photos.

Answer:

Yes, thanks, that's where my brain was heading too. Any way to move photos to the new '3rd' account whilst maintaining the album structure?

Only way I have is download all photos in albums, then re-upload to new account an album at a time, but that is going to take hours....

Answer:

The easiest and quickest way would be to share those albums with that 3rd account, this way you wouldn't have to download them and re-upload them.

Once you share an album, it would appear under the Sharing tab of the 3rd account. You can then open it , tap the 3 dots and tap Show in Albums, this would show the album under the Albums tab. You can then tap the cloud with a down arrow icon to add all this album's pictures to this account's library.

Answer:

I've made that leap. Unfortunately lost the album structure as expected but now have a 'pics' account that is signed in on both of our phones, where it doesn't pop up with annoying mail and calendar notifications (as the account is empty other than pictures).

It's a shame we've had to do this as Google really should have this as a solution given the number of times it crops up over the years.

Thanks for your help Salim.

Answer:

You're welcome Wilf. If you share your (and her) albums to that 3rd 'pics' account as described in my earlier post, you would get your album structure in that account.

You can submit feedback from within the app to request albums to be autoshared in shared libraries as a new feature.

what device and Android version are you using? If the device has a microSD card I suggest that you remove it and try opening the Google Photos app again.
