One of my friend uses Google photos and he is having the option called 'for you' where he gets well edited pics from google.
But in my Google photos 'for you' is not available. Why so??

Answer:

Hi Chaitali,

the new section "For you" is most likely the old Asistant section of Google Photos that has been renamed and nothing else apparently changed. The new name is probably still rolling out to users, so I suggest that you give it some more time because you'll get it too.

Question: Sync Google Drive with Google Photos and then unchecking the Sync Notch deletes all Google Photos

I have around 9200 photos in Google Drive later decided to sync with Google Photos through the Googl…

I have around 9200 photos in Google Drive later decided to sync with Google Photos through the Google Photos App (Sync feature) because this could save me space as the Google photos upload is free with high quality. After the syncing successfully completed, I've gone back to Google Photos app again and Unticked the "Sync feature\

Answer:

Syncing always means a life-connection between original and copy, so changing or deleting the original will cause a change or a deletion of the copy as long as the syncing is not switched-off. And then you were right that if syncing is switched-off the copies will stay if the originals are deleted.

But the word "syncing" in this option is misleading: originally the correct word was used, namely "showing" .
And then it is understandable that it are no copies, but just a viewport.

However: there is a tric to keep the "copies" by making albums on Photos. But then we need to know if your pictures neatly were organised in thematic folders on Drive or that it are just unorganised bulks.

If in neat folders, you can type the name of a folder in the searchbox on https://photos.google.com and then you can select the result, click + choose New album and give it the same name as the original folder.
Etc. etc. for all other folders.
If done, you can switch-off the option and the pictures will stay on Photos and can be deleted on Drive.

Please come back here to discuss details.

Answer:

@Anish: There is another way to do what you want, by the way, even if your images are not organized into folders as Rinus suggests. This can be done using Backup & Sync on a computer, though the steps to accomplish this are not entirely obvious. Please write back if you'd like advice on this method.

Answer:

Rinus Alewijnse : Thanks for the advice. I'll also take a look if there are any suggestion from Lobalobo.

Lobalobo : Yes, please. My photos are organised into Folders and subfolders. As I stated earlier, I have done with the sync part and even managed to name all the people for facial recognition, then all photos started deleting automatically post the "Sync" feature turned off.

I have main 3 folders and then all are subfolders. Some sample format as below:

Family Photos - Pappa
Family Photos - Pappa - Trip to Kerala - 2017
Family Photos - Pappa - Trip to Kerala - 2018
Family Photos - Pappa - Trip to Kerala - 2019
Friends Photos - Atul
Friends Photos -  Harry
Marriage Photos - Atul
Marriage Photos - Harry

Thanks,
Anish

Answer:

Whatever Lobalobo comes with, his method will include downsync all relevant drive folders to laptop and then switch-off downsync to be able to delete your folders there.
Then upsync again to Drive, but in a new tab named Computer (but taking no space) and upload to Google Photos in one stream - so you will get no albums there and taking no space there if you choose High Quality instead of Original quality.

So a much more extensive approach and you need a laptop with enough space - at least temporarily.
Be prepaired :-)

Answer:

@Anish: Great. First of all, Rinus is correct that the method I'm going to recommend will require at least temporarily storing these folders on a computer's hard drive, and if they are not already there, you would have to download them there. But once you get the images into hard drive folders, they can remain there and be backed up to Google Photos for free (assuming you want to store in High Quality rather than Original) and they can be deleted from Google Drive.

The advantage of the method I would recommend is that you would not have to create Google Photos Albums if you didn't want to and you would have as extra security on your computer's hard drive a set of all your photos, which would also be in original resolution even if the Google Photos backup were in High Quality.

So let me know if you remain interested in this method. If so, I'll give you step by step instructions that will be easy to follow.

Answer:

Thanks both of you for helping me out on this. I think I must stick with Rinus Alewijnse's advice on creating albums for now. I have about 10 GB of photos now in Google Drive, hence downloading and then uploading back to Google Photos would be a tedious job for me. I have gone through few forums to learn how the "Sync" works in common. Good catch, observed that if the synced location breaks, then the files stays there.

For example, if you have a sync pattern between C:\\Main and D:\\Main but then you want to disconnect the sync, you need to copy the D:\\Main files over to some other subfolders or another location thereby the sync drive path will break and files will remain saved on new location.

Likewise, what we can do here is,
1. Sync all the photos from Google Drive to Google Photos by switch On the Notch "Sync Feature" in google app.
2. Let all the photos sync with Google Photos.
3. Google Photos don't have the ability to create albums self basis the Google Drive Folders, but it'll organize based on Time/Date and Facial recognition.
4. When the syncing is completed, Select the photos into group and Click on + and move/allocate to an "Album"s.
5. By creating an Album, what we're doing here is, breaking the existing sync pattern/path

I checked this myself by syncing the photos, creating an Album and allocated there 10 photos, and then turned off the Sync feature. Now only that Album and 10 photos remains there and every other photos synced back and gone :)

Apparently I'm gonna take more time than what Lobalobo is going to offer, because I have a lot of Folders and subfolders in Google Drive, that need to convert as Individual Album in Google Photos.

Thanks both of you. :o)

Answer:

Just an additional remark: in Lobablobo's approach you don't need to do the downloading and uploading manually, because that will be done by the Backup-app installed on your computer (if it is a modern Windows or Mac computer).
But as said: that app will not create albums on Photos - you still have to do that manually - but basically on the same way as I already have described.
So if fact that automatic subway does not help you out and may cause a lot of additional troubles you don't have now.
Just go on - it does not need to be ready in one day.
Good luck / Rinus

Answer:

If you want the Albums, then Rinus's approach is superior with the exception that you will in the end have no hard drive backup, which is dangerous (not only for Google Photos but for any cloud storage, none of which is entirely immune from error).

Answer:

Have had the worst experience keeping photos in Hdd. I preferred not to keep a single piece of data on my computer thereafter. I have the same copies backed up in OneDrive and mega.nz aa well. 😁

Answer:

That looks safe enough indeed, but if it starts raining all clouds will disappear :-(
So I still prefer to have a copy on a small usb-disc connected each month for a while.
And then they seem to have "eternal life\

Question: Do "archived" photos count against my storage limit?

I am unsure if "archiving" photos saves me storage space?

Brittani,

Archiving photos does nothing to conserve or otherwise free up your storage space. All that does is removes the selected pictures from your main photo timeline.

Only pictures that are uploaded as Original Quality will count against your storage space. Anything uploaded as High Quality will not count against your storage.

You can check how much storage is being used by Photos by visiting Google Drive and examining your storage settings there. If you feel you have too much space being used by Photos, you can choose to reduce all of your uploads to High Quality using the Recover Storage option in the Google Photos settings, but keep in mind this process is not reversible and you cannot select which pictures to convert to HQ. It's all or nothing with that option.

Let me know if you have more questions about this.

Regards,
~ Greg

Answer:

@User 15...
It is totally unclear what you mean and it has nothing to do with the title of this thread apart from the word archive.
If you are logged-in to photos.google.com in the browser on your laptop, you also are able to see the contents of your archive under the 3 small lines at https://photos.google.com/archive
But if archived pictures are not used in albums shared, nobody else can see them.

It is unclear what is done with an sd-card, but if pictures stored on your phone are copied to an inserted sd, that copy will contain everything selected for copying. But the contents at Google can't be copied to an sd-card that easy, so then you must explain how you are using the sd.

The reply by Chris is correct (as usual), but refers only to photos uploaded from a mobile device when using "Backup & Sync".  OP posted in the category "Web" though.
  • When uploading from a computer using "Backup & Sync" you must set "High Quality" in the "Backup & Sync" application.

  • When uploading manually (from mobile device or computer) you must select "High Quality" in https://photos.google.com/settings

What's wrong with google photos???  I just made an album with over 200 photos in it and now it says there's 5.  Also, a year ago, I backed up all my photos to google photo.  The app asked to delete them from my phone as they were backed up.  I did but when I went to google photos, nothing was there.  When I checked my phones storage, it was empty.  I lost 5 years of photos!!!  Why is this happening???

Restore recently deleted or archived items:  I tried this and it only restored my Instagram photos.  I lost 5 years of photos!

Check your backup: This is correctly checked as back up and sync

Find items from other apps & devices:  This was empty

Avoid losing photos or videos:  Back up has always been on

Seriously!  this is the worst experience I have ever had with a photo app.  I'm also not computer illiterate.

I understand and share your frustration. The problem is that this forum is only populated with volunteer users trying to help others, and that there is nothing we can do about missing photos other than suggesting more places where you could find them (if signed in to the correct account):
You wrote: "Avoid losing photos or videos:  Back up has always been on"
Unfortunately Google makes you and others believe that Google Photos is safe. They make it worse by using the terminology "Backup & Sync\

Answer:

"The photos are still in Google Photos, and each of the pictures missing from my album says it IS in the album! And they don't reappear if I try to add to the album again."

First question is always: are you sure ? Is it a big album ? If so you can sort by "Recently added" (a small test showed that this probably means "Recently added to the album".

If not you can try to add again by using the different options:
  • Select the photo in the library > Add to > album
  • Open the album and use "Add to album". That should open the library with the photos that are already in the album selected. Be careful NOT to deselect them: that removes them from the album.
  • You can upload them manually again by dragging from computer into the open album. The photo will not upload again, but should be added to the album.
If nothing helps there seems to be an issue at Google's side. If you still have the originals you can try to delete them and upload again (for example drag & drop in the album).

"Is there a limit to how many photos can appear in an album? "
The limit is 20.000 items per album !

Hannah,

No, Google Photos does not and will not ask you for any credit card or other payment information. The service is entirely free and is an integrated component to every Google account.

If you're seeing something that appears to be from Google Photos and it's asking you to provide some sort of payment info or credit card number, do not proceed

That is an indication that you have a malicious rogue application on your device that is masquerading as Google Photos. You should perform a security scan for such malicious applications and also conduct Google's security checkup for your account (do so from a different device, just to be safe).

Thanks a lot! And I suppose that the older version of google photos which was linked to google + didn't ask for payment merhod neither.
Thanks again!

That's right. Originally, Photos was integrated with Google+, but it's not anymore. Now, it's a standalone product. And no, even the older version tied to G+ would never ask for any kind of payment information.

And yes, that logo is from a much older version of Photos. In current versions, there's no square behind the flower-type icon thingy.

9 of my photos/videos of my nieces 4th birthday somehow ended up in the trash, so I got them out and attempted to save them to my device one at a time. However, when I tapped "save video to device", it VERY quickly said it was saved, but it wasn't in my camera roll. Instead, it along with the other 8 photos ended up back in the trash. I tried to email and text them to my phone but it kept saying it was unable to do so. It's also worth noting that they also end up back in the trash when I either refresh or exit out and return to the trash page after a few seconds. Hello there,  My son is 4 years old and my daughter is 2 years old.  When they were babies they looked very similar, now that they are older they don't look the same.  However Google keeps tagging my daughter as my son.  When I select all the photos and remove all photos of my daughter from results, they are removed.  Step 1, done and good.  However, not Google is ignoring those photos and cannot find my daughter again. My son has 3500 tagged pics.  My daughter has 8!?!?!  How can I get Google to find my daughters face as a new person so I can tag her?  Thanks, Lorne

Unfortunately there's no way to manually tag a photo of a person. Google Photos should re-scan these photos, or you could try adding new photos, and hopefully eventually a new people album will show up for you to tag for your daughter.

I would like to be able to select multiple photos (not necessarily in order), perform an action (like adding them to an album), and then I'd like to perform another action (like adding them to another album or archiving them to cut down on clutter). However, at the current time, the selected photos do not remain selected after the first action...making it incredibly frustrating to have to remember which photos I selected in the first place and just doesn't seem to make any sense to me. This feature isn't currently available (it used to be in the first iteration of Google photos but was removed after an update). I would like to know if this is a feature that can be added or if I'm the only one who needs this? Thank you!

Answer:

You are certainly not the only one. And to make it worse, after adding photos to an album certain actions (archive, add star) cannot be done from within the album neither. Thus adding to a new album is not always a work-around.

Hi,

I don't have an iPad to test it. But I searched the internet and found some info that might work:

Rahul, deleted Photos are stored in Trash for up to 60 days, if you delete Photos again from trash, that's two times deletion.

Unfortunately, once Photos are deleted from trash there is no way to retrieve them back :(

When I look at a shared Album that I created, on Android or Web, then the author of my images is displayed as "Google-User" (or "Google-Nutzer" in de) instead of showing my Name. It used to work earlier, but since I deleted my Google+ Account my username is gone. Unfortunatelly it is not possible anymore to create a Google+ Account.
Any idea on how to fix this?

Answer:

Hi Jacques,

Thanks for reaching out!

We're sorry about that. You can't create a new Google+ account anymore. Google is going to shut down Google+ for the consumer accounts from April 2. See this announcement!

But, still, you can change your display name. Please follow these steps:
  1. Go to Google About Me
  2. Click on the edit icon just near your display name.
  3. Edit it and save it.
There you go!

Regards, and thanks!

Hey
Thanks for the Info. Unfortunately this solution is of no help.
I changed my Name and Username however this has no Impact on my Name shown in Google Photos shared Albums.
Any other Idea how this could be fixed? Or maybe an Idea why this happened after deleting my Google+ Account?
Thanks!

Answer:

This has happened to me too  My Google plus account was closed down automatically. Now my shared photos say I'm a Google user and don't display my name. Any fix coming?

Question: Googe Photos causes re-downloading ALL iCloud photos, no space left on iPhone

I'm using Google Photos on my iPhone 7 to back up my photos taken there. The iPhone also uses iCloud Photos Library with the option Optimise iPhone Storage on as I have a big photo library, which is bigger than the phone storage.

My phone constantly runs out of space due to photos downloaded from iCloud back to the phone. I even tried deleting the photo library and started from scratch, but the photos are downloaded again in a couple of days!

I suspect that Google Photos, while trying to back up all the available photos, triggered the re-downloading the whole library back to the phone.

Does anyone have the same issue?

Do you use both iCloud Photo Library and Google Photos Backup without issue?

All my phone photos have already been safely uploaded to both iCloud and Google Photos, I don't want Google Photos to try backing those up again (except the newly taken), is there any way I can prevent this?

Many thanks!

Answer:

Hi. you need to let the sync continue and finish,

I've been using Google Photos and iCloud Photos together for a while so I have some experience with this.

The two services play nicely together. The best option is to keep iCloud Photos turned on, along with optimize storage. Then install Google Photos and start the sync. Here's what happens.

At the beginning, there are (let's assume) no full-size photos on your phone, only in iCloud. Google Photos goes through every photo in your library, and wants to upload it. It requests the full-size photo from iCloud, which downloads to your phone and gets cached on the device. Then the full size photo is uploaded to Google, and Google Photos moves on to the next one. It keeps doing this until it's gone through all your photos.

The optimize storage setting is doing what it's supposed to do. At some point when the phone fills up, it will begin removing photos again like before. Let's say for example (using not real numbers) you have 5GB of free space on your device, which is enough to hold 500 images. Google Photos will download those 500 images from iCloud and upload to Google, then iCloud will see you're out of space and remove those images, and move on to the next batch of 500.

Google Photos and iCloud Photos don't really talk to each other much, all of this stuff just happens in the background automatically. When Google Photos asks for a photo, iCloud knows it needs to download it first so it does. Then when your phone fills up it knows it needs to clear off space.

It should pretty much manage itself without needing to do much. When you're totally done syncing with Google, you can just leave your phone and let iCloud delete the downloaded photos when it needs space.

Answer:

Thank you for the advice. That's what I guessed should have happened, but I kept running out of space.

After posting here, I've reset the phone (starting from scratch) and are using both iCloud Photos Library and Google Photos backup again.
The backup has not finished, but the storage taken by Photos has stayed below 5GB so far. I'll update again in a few weeks.

Answer:

Does anyone tried and tested this before?
I also want to migrate from iCloud to Google Photo's but need to be sure for this way of transfering.

Question: Video including Live photo corrupts after editing by Movie editor

I tried to use Movie editor feature of Google Photos from my Pixel 3 today (android). The movie I was trying to create contains live photos as video, same live photos as static image and couple of videos. When I save the movie, I notice it goes to "Processing" mode in which we cannot download or share. This is pretty normal behavior.
At this time if I try to play video from same device, it will take me to Movie editor as the server didn't finish processing. And if I go to browser view (eg by Chrome), I see a gray thumbnail.
Now within a minute or two, the gray thumbnail is gone, as if the video doesn't exist.

In android app, the video thumbnail shows error "Video not found". I can edit the video, which plays the video but if I hit save again, it does the same thing as explained above.
This more or less means the video got corrupted. I can now view the filename listed under photos.google.com/unsupportedvideos.
From here if I try to download the video, it gives me 500 server error. Ouch! (cause the video didn't even compile)

By the way: switching to another account, trying to another android device, resetting Cache & Storage, Un-installing/Re-installing, using stock version of Photos app, using latest version of Photos app, trying on iPad, recreating movie again from scratch : none of the options worked in my case. Bugs are sooo painful.

Since I really cared about this movie, I spent couple hours trying to figure out why I was not able to create movie in this particular case. (but can create movie for other randomly selected pictures or videos)
Guess what, its your lucky day today! I know the steps to recreate the problem and a proposed alternate solution (for those who are stuck with this same problem and if its not yet fixed)

Simple steps to recreate problem:
1. Take a live photo.
2. Go to photos app & go to Create Movie mode.
3. Add this live photo and set it to static (i.e. no video).
4. Duplicate this photo from Movie editor view (or add this photo again from Movie editor view) and set this one to live video.
*Summary*: movie has a live photo and a static photo both pointing to same file.
Hit Save, wait a minute to notice the video is corrupted and listed under unsupportedvideos.

Steps for an alternate solution:
Please check my proposed alternate solution as first comment below.

Answer:

Steps for an alternate solution: (which luckily worked for me)
1. Try to duplicate the live photo either by downloading and re-uploading, OR from android photos app, try Export feature to duplicate live photo as static image. This duplicated live photo is a static image in my case.
2. Repeat this for all live photos which you added to your movie as both static and live video.
3. Now go to movie editor view (you can edit the movie of a corrupted video from android or iphone/ipad but not from browser as it will not show in the photos view)
4. Remove the trouble maker static images and add the above duplicated static picture.
5. Hit Save and this time you will notice it will take far longer(30+ mins for me) to process the final movie, depending on how big your movie is. (fingers crossed)
The video will no longer be listed under unsupportedvideos, and is not corrupt anymore.
*Summary*: movie has a live photo and a static photo pointing to different files.

If the movie has to fail again for reason in issue or for some other reason, it should fail and corrupt within a minute or two.
Hope the temporary solution helps.

For google support: Once fix has been delivered and I am notified, I'll be happy to repeat my steps to recreate above problem and will update about the status here.

To my knowledge it should only show "people and pets". You may find horses, pigs, bunnies, hamsters, goats, etc in the "Things" albums though.

"I don't have a things album though"
On all platforms (web, Android, iOS) I see under the Albums tab from left to right:
Favourites - People - Places - Things - Videos - Collages - Animations - Movies

On a smartphone you may have to swipe horizontally to see them all.

deleting and re-inviting (btw, it reports that it has sent me an invitation, but I never receive it in my email account).
Waiting several days (3-4) for items to show up
Searched thru forums
My library is shared with my husband and his is shared with me.  I am trying to create a localized family account so I have all the family photos in one place....hence my daughter sharing her library with me.

Answer:

Hi Suzin, you can only share your library with one person, which means your husband's mutual share is all you can do. You can disconect your husband and then share with your daughter and switch between the two, but only one at a time,
