This is more for videos (not photos), and it's across Android and PC. This 'Create new question' form didn't have the option to specify though.
Anyway, ever since I've ever had my Drive account I noticed that eventually Google will compress all of my videos to a lower quality. It doesn't usually happen right after upload. It takes time, sometimes weeks/months. But eventually my 1080p 30fps videos and 1440p 60fps videos worked their way down to what appears to be 360-720p @ 15-30fps (figures not confirmed, but there's a very clear reduction in quality). They look like utter garbage in comparison. The issue is that I assumed I was getting a BACKUP service, so I DELETED many of the originals! Only to find out that Google is apparently trying to save server space and lying to their paying customers about it. WTF gives, Google!?
Answer:
Answer:
It's already set to ORIGINAL quality. But Google still destroys the quality later on down the line. Why? You shouldn't be touching my files.
Answer:
Hi Ryan,
Answer:
I believe it happens on both Google Photos and Google Drive, but I originally brought up the issue related to photos uploaded to Google Drive. I can't compare file size and video specs, because like I already said I deleted the originals in almost every case. I have 3 fairly recent videos which are on both my Pixel 2 and Google Drive, but they don't really show any signs of video compression (yet). Some of the videos on my Drive, of which the originals are long gone, are now in such terrible quality they're useless. I've tried downloading the videos in those cases to make sure it wasn't a streaming issue, but it made no difference...the actual downloaded file was equally as poor quality. My files had been modified by you guys. There's no question about that.
Answer:
I'm experiencing similar issues with videos for a university research project that were taken on a pixel 2, uploaded to google photos, and lost quality after a couple months. Rendered the footage useless for our project.

Answer:
Hi Ryan,
Welcome to the Google Photos Help Community.
I certainly understand what you're going through. To narrow down the issue, please check the following settings on your device and computer:
On your computer:
- Open photos.google.com/settings.
- check if the upload size is set as high quality or original quality.
- Open the Google Photos app
.
- Sign in to your Google Account.
- At the top, tap Menu
.
- Select Settings
Back up & sync.
- Tap Upload Size.
- check for High quality or Original quality.
If size selected is high quality:
- Unlimited free storage.
- Photos are compressed to save space. If a photo is larger than 16MP, it will be resized to 16MP.
- You can print good quality 16MP photos in sizes up to 24 inches x 16 inches.
- Videos higher than 1080p will be resized to high-definition 1080p. A video with 1080p or less will look close to the original.
If size selected is original quality:
- Limited free storage that uses storage in your Google Account. Check your storage here. If you go over this limit, learn how to buy storage.
- All photos and videos are stored in the same resolution that you took them.
- Recommended for photos that have more than 16MP and videos with more than 1080p.
- Recommended for printing large banners.
Keep us posted.
Best,
Nadia

Hi Ryan,
Thanks for writing back.
Could you please confirm, if your videos were initially uploaded to Google Photos or Google Drive?
Also, please help us with the file size and pixel difference before and after uploading the videos on your account.
Awaiting your response.

- The help says: "Videos higher than 1080p will be resized to high-definition 1080p."
I am not sure what that means (is 1080 the longer/shorter side?), but I have some 1920x1080 videos from 2014 till now, and they all still appear as 1920x1080. So I cannot explain why your "1080p 30fps videos and 1440p 60fps videos worked their way down to what appears to be 360-720p @ 15-30fps - Some users upload in "High Quality" thinking that the setting was "Original\
Answer:
Maybe Google can compress videos and photos into bad quality, but if you put the files into compressed format such as .ZIP or .RAR or maybe .7Z then Google can't reduce its quality especially when you use .RAR format because it required paid program such as WinRAR and i'm pretty sure Google don't waste their time to just extract then reduce quality and compress it again into .RAR files. And if you still don't believe Google, then try to set a password to your compressed files.

Question: Photos stuck somewhere in limbo?

So, I used to have tens of thousands of photos on my Google photos, but som of them did not show up on all my devices, so I decided to remove everything and start over. However, after going through the pain of deleting them in badges of 300 since everything over that just crashed the app and the webpage, I finally got them all gone. I thought. I see no images on the web, or in the app on any of my devices, but my storage shows there is still 4gb used of my storage for Google Photos. I then tested to download my complete Google Photos archive from Google Takeout, and there was 1,77gb of photos of the ones I had already removed a long time ago. Now, before I start reuploading everything, I want it to be completely cleaned out so nothing corrupts.
Answer:
So I found this: https://get.google.com/albumarchiveHere I can find the 1,77GB of photos that also Takeout found. As I read about this, it seems like if I were to remove anything from here, the pictures also might disappear from my Google Maps reviews for example. Most of these pictures are the same as I have uploaded to Maps. Can someone confirm this to me? Should I just let them be?If I should, then okay, fine by me. However, that does not explain why my Google Storage tells me that I have 4,03 GB (2,26 GB more) in use. Where are these photos, and how can I remove them?
Answer:
Hello, and thank you for your time! Albumarchive matches with all the photos I got in my takeout. The 1,77 GB. It is the rest that is hidden somewhere in the depths of limbo, behind the great walls of Google, since Takeout doesn't even see them.Does anyone know if removing my photos from albumarchive removes them from my maps reviews aswell.

Being a Local Guide I have added around 500-600 photos to Gmaps. I want to know whether they take up my drive space bcz everytime I choose to share it asks me original size or large size (compressed)
Answer:
Probably yes if you did choose original. You can see you usage at https://www.google.com/settings/storage under Details.PS: it is not clear to me where these Map-pictures are stored actually - I do think on https://get.google.com/albumarchive and that is not on Drive and probably not in Photos either.
Answer:Definitely yes if you choose Original, although I don't get an option to choose original size or large size. Even uploading an already compressed image from my library uses quota. They are currently (uploaded direct in the Android app) stored in the Album archive in a 'date of upload' album, see screenshot <visible online>Storage can be recovered at the usual place
Answer:
PS If I upload by choosing Camera and taking a new photo it resizes to 1920 x 1080 for a 16:9 photos and doesn't use quota, but stores in the same place.
Answer:
So an active local guide gets more and more day-albums there and Google could not even create a special folder for them like for Blogger or Hangouts.Bright company. And no free storage either...

Not possible anymore and not attractive either because each copy to Drive now will take storage also. And what you are doing can perfectly be done on Photos directly by creating (temporary) albums for sharing. Same exact problem here. I can't share with son but can with my wife. Both are in family group and my sons has photo sharing with the photos app enabled in his family link settings. My son doesn't show up in the family group share when I try to do it in the photos app. When I share a photo with him, it doesn't show up in his account. He shared one with me and I got it. We created a family link account for our daughter. It worked as expected. Now she can use her phone in "supervised" mode. But, now, as I wanted to share an album with her, sharing fails. On the android device with jus t "Ein Fehler ist aufgetreten" (there is an error). On my laptop (Linux, Chromium) "Einladung kann nicht gesendet werden" (Invitation cannot be sent) or similar. If the exact wording is imported, I can retry. This happens when I try to share via the family group's members or when I try to share directly. It is very frustrating and asks for removing all that family group crap and cheat about her age instead, go get her using a full featured account.

This is pretty difficult to explain, but I'll try my best. There are two folders/albums in the Google photos app that are incorrectly organizing photos based on date. These are the Camera and Snapchat folders in my internal storage. Yet, the embedded timestamps of the photos/videos are completely fine. It's the sorting of the photos/videos that are jumbled.
For example, let's say I have 3 photos from May 1st, 4 photos from May 5th, and 6 photos from May 13th. This unusual glitch now causes there to be 1 photo under May 1st, 5 photos under May 5th, and 7 photos under May 13th.
It seems like I activated some type of bug by recovering an item from the Trash, and I can't find any way to reverse it or fix it. When viewing the affected photos in the Google Photos website, as well as using any other third party photo viewer, the photos are organized correctly and no problems are present. In fact, on the Google Photos app, if I check the Info of a photo or video that is incorrectly organized under the album view, the correct date is still present.
I'm using the first Google Pixel running Android 8.1.0.
Thanks for taking the time to read all of this, by the way.

I organize my images into albums. Some are private and some I share with the people who were at the event. The Star is replaced with a heart - and I have no idea how to view images I have marked with a heart.I would like to be able to use the favorites folder across all images in all albums.

Also, I am working on this issue with my team and will get back to you with an update.Appreciate your patience.Best,Nadia
Answer:
It's hard to believe how clumsy this was implemented. As soon as you share an album or just get a link, the option to add a star simply disappears. You can still add stars:- In the library, which may be easy for recent photos
- In the "recently added" view https://photos.google.com/search/_tra_
- When you first create a new album (not new shared album) you can add stars in the album before you share or you can
- select the photos you want to share (may be ALL photos) and share. That creates a new shared album which is NOT the same as the original. You will see two albums in https://photos.google.com/albums but you can hide the shared one.
- or you can select the photos you want to share (may be ALL photos) and select "Get link". In that case you will see the new shared album only in https://photos.google.com/sharing, but there is another issue: the album automatically gets a stupid title. You can add one by using 3-dots > Edit album
- Since the above method may be confusing you can also (probably better)
- select the photos you want to "star" in the shared album
- Add them to a new album (not shared), for example called "star"
- You can now add stars in that new album
There is some "room for improvement" here !
Answer:
"some room for improvement" - nicely understated! :-) Thanks for the options - I have some workarounds, but yeah, it could really just do with having the stars available where we need them.

Would also like to have this feature - I also sent the request through the 'send feedback' option suggested by the google member. Hopefully they'll implement this soon!
Answer:
I would also like to see this feature implemented, there should be an easy way to see which images you "hearted" or "loved" in a shared album.
Please, make it real, thanks!.
Answer:
I also find this to be a sorely missing feature; ANYONE who is allowed access to a shared album should be able not just to socially "heart" a photo, but actually "favorite" it and have it added to their OWN favorites album. My album of favorites should be able to contain any image I have access to see, either mine or shared with me by anyone, whenever I want, and I should have permanent access to them through my Favorites album.Thank you!
Answer:
Agree -- def need to make favoriting available in a shared album if I am the original owner. Infuriating as I am trying to make a photo book.Wonder if removing the share would let me do this again. Sorry anyone else that wanted to see my kiddo (you know, like Daddy or Nana)! Big miss google.

Just had some questions about a few issues I have seen with the "free up space" option in Google Photos. I have seen people having issues downloading their images back to their phones and being informed to download them to a computer and then back to their mobile device. Is this just to download many photos and videos at once or is there another reason I am missing. Also, there was an issue I saw where a person wanted their photos and videos to have the original meta data that was attached to the photos and videos when they were stored locally on the device. The person was informed to delete google photos app data and to clear the cache. Is there anyone that could explain to me what this would do for that person in this situation. Any info on this would be greatly appreciated. I am just trying to understand more and become less of a noob. Thank you.-Nickolaus B-
Answer:Hi Nickolaus,Clearing the Google Photos app cache and data is the equivalent of resetting/refreshing the app. This is a recommended action when people are having issues with the app. Most of the time, this solves issues before the need to uninstall the app and then reinstalling it.In terms of the 'free up space' functionality...This is designed to save room on your device. The purpose being that we take 100s of photos, and then eventually run out of room on our phones. The 'Free up space' function is available so you can delete any photos that have been backed up to the Google Photos cloud, clearing up room on your device. The app will then 'cache' these photos for you to see use/access/view - but they will no longer be physically stored on your device. There are people who have large amounts of storage on their device, and then want to put all the photos back on to their phone. This is where it can get tricky. So your options are:- If you have enough storage, keep the photos on your hone and don't use Free up space
- If you run out of room, use Free up space and then if you ever need to, download individual photos/videos back on to your device when required.
I hope this helps a little bit!
Answer:
Are there situations where clearing the data of an app will be detrimental? Because I'm sure what happens when you clear the data of the google photos app is the app resets to factory settings and then all that is required is to sign back in, no photos will be deleted from this action. However are there apps that when you clear the data you actually do delete important files that cannot be retrieved simply by signing back in, or is this just noob paranoia I'm experiencing? Also, do you have any idea why, in another forum I read that someone was being instructed to sync all of the photos they wanted back on their device from google photos to google drive and then to a computer as zipped files and then back to their device after unzipping? Was this instruction based on preserving the original meta data of the photos? I ask this because the main issue that user was experiencing was that just downloading the photos and videos back to their device directly from google photos lead to new dates being associated with some of the files. Long rant, I know, I really appreciate you getting back to me. I would like to become a google product expert but there is so much to learn and I'm sure answering rants such as these is a big part of the job description.-Nickolaus B-

Question: By mistake I deleted my trash photo or some body hack my email I don't no but I want my photos back
2018 all photo s i want back back cause someone hack my account I don't no but I can't find my photo…Hi Mansuman,I’m sorry, it’s not possible to recover photos permanently deleted from the Google Photos Trash. However, you may install to your Android device a deleted photo recovery app https://play.google.com/store/search?q=recover%20deleted%20photos&c=apps and run a scan for anything to recover. In addition I recommend that you contact the Google Drive support team to see if any deleted files may be recovered. Just open the Google Drive https://support.google.com/drive/?hl=en&authuser=0#topic=14940&contact=1 contact form, click Missing or deleted files, select a contact option, and be sure to tell them you permanently deleted files in Google Drive.

Question: How to download pics from camera to Google Photos on lap top?
Trying to download pics from camera to lap top via usb cable, like I did with Picasa, now GP
You still can use Picasa for importing and organizing your pics from a normal camera, but you need a workaround now because Picasa is disconnected from Google Photos recently (Picasa was already unsupported since 2016).If you prefer another approach, you should come back here and tell us a bit more precisely, because then we need to know how you are using Google Photos.

When I go on Google Photos to search, it suggests searching for specific faces and pets its AI has repeatedly recognised. One of them is me. It's a good face-on photo which I would like to send to someone else. How do I find the specific photo Google's AI has selected as exemplary of what my face looks like? Thanks.
Answer:
Hi Cameron B!According to the descriptions of how AI works, there is no single sample. There are many photos that have your individual facial features, your appearance with different facial expressions, in different light conditions, and in different environments of people and objects. You yourself can choose any photo that looks best for you and for other people.

Question: Are photos stored in google photos secured and maintain privacy?
Kindly let me know the privacy of the photos in google photos- Photos in Google Photos can only be viewed when you are signed in to your Google account. They are private as long as you do not share your Uid and password
- When you share photos (albums) anyone with the link (but no one else) can see the photos. Thus you must trust the ones you share with, because they can share further or even make public.

Question: I just want my Google albums/photos and not loose photos. How to delete all loose picts?
Looked in my iphone's Settings and checked online. There is no way to do this. You should think of albums more like labels- a photo can be in 0 to many albums, but all photos are always in the main Photos timeline view. If you don't want to see a photo, you can archive it, but there's no way to find all photos not in albums.
