Hi Jenni,
Thanks for posting on the Google Photos Help Community.
Just to confirm, have you backed up all the photos and videos on device to Google Photos before resetting your device? If so, please follow the steps in this help center article to find your photos.
If that's not the case, please elaborate your query in detail for me to assist you better.

I backed up photos from the Gallery of my android phone to Google Photos. My photos were sorted in my Gallery by the app they were downloaded from i.e. Facebook was an album where photos downloaded from facebook were kept, similary for twitter, reddit, snapchat etc. Also Screenshots, Camera etc other albums present. My problem is that in google photos, I am not getting such segregation instead it's a heap of all the photos from different albums combined and sorted by date. I'd like to either revert these photos back to my device gallery or have the same sorting in google photos, either of which I don't know how to accomplish. Please help
Answer:
Hi Pranav,
Thanks for posting on the Google Photos Help Community.
Please know that, photos and videos on Google Photos will be backed up as individual photo/video and not as albums/folders. However, you may create an album on Google Photos by following the steps in this help center article.
Also, there isn't a filter on Google Photos to sort photos according to the folder they were backed up from. However, please feel free to share your feedback following these simple steps:
- Go to photos.google.com.
- At the top left, open the Menu
, then select Send feedback.
You may also visit this help article for information on how to download photos or videos to your device.
Let me know if you have any additional questions.

Answer:
That information is something that should be important and warn users about individual photos being uploaded instead of album folders. It's only after I free'd up space that I realized I now have a cluster of photos that are mixed up and will require hours upon hours to be organized in albums. Either warn the user or make it so you can have synced albums.
Answer:
I absolutely agree! It makes no sense that my thousands of photos on my phone, in albums, must be resorted into albums on Google Photos. I'm very disappointed in Google.

Got my vote for stupid too, Google just screwed up 10 years worth of photos that were all sorted in albums so they were easy to find. This app is worthless. I would pay good money to have my pics back on my phone in the albums where they were.

Hello Siva,
Welcome to the Google Photos Help Community.
I certainly understand how important those files to you. Just to let you know that performing factory data reset doesn't delete the photos/videos from the Google Photos if the photos/videos are completely backup.
It looks like your photos and videos aren't backed up properly to your Google Photos account as it also acts as a gallery app when the backup and sync is "OFF". However, could you please check if you're able to see the files on web (photos.google.com)?
Also, please find this help center article on how to "Find missing photos & videos".

Question: I mistakly deleted photos .
Hello Siva,
Welcome to the Google Photos Help Community.
To assist you better, could you please confirm if you've deleted the photos permanently from the trash? If yes, unfortunately, there isn't any way to recover them. If not, please check if you see the photos on trash as you can always recover photos from the Google Photos app trash.
If you have back up & sync on, photos and videos you delete will stay in your trash for 60 days. You can recover deleted items by following the below steps:
- Open the Google Photos app
.
- At the top left, tap Menu
, then Trash
.
- Touch and hold the photo or video you want to recover.
- At the top right, tap Restore
. That photo or video will be restored to your Google Photos library and added back into any albums it was in.
Incase, if you're unable to restore from the Google Photos, the following things could be the reasons:
- Photos and Videos moved to trash more than 60 days ago.
- Photos and Videos moved to trash, then emptied your trash.
- Photos and Videos moved to trash permanently deleted from your trash.

I have a Galaxy Note8, and I would like to upload the photos in original quality. I have 1.4 GB free in storage. When I go to settings>Back up & sync> Upload Size, "High quality (free unlimited storage)" is selected, and "Original (1.4 GB storage left)" is grey, and unselectable. I would like to upload in original quality.
The phone has a very nice camera that I would like to capitalize on, and I would prefer to stick with Google Photos, but I am not satisfied with the compression of "High quality".
I also know that I am not alone on this problem. A few other posts with this problem have come up, but they have been locked before they were ever answered. They were not using a Galaxy Note 8, which makes me think that the problem isn't there.
Thanks!

Hi Brandon,
Thanks for reaching out to the Google Photos Help Community.
I certainly understand what you're going through as you're unable to backup your photos and videos in original quality on the Google Photos app. For this, could you please confirm, if you're able to backup photos/videos on the web version of Google Photos in original quality? If not, please follow these steps on your browser:
- On your computer, open photos.google.com/settings.
- Select high quality or original quality.
- Manually backup photos:
- On your computer, open photos.google.com.
- At the top right, click Upload.
- Find and select your photos.
- Click Open.
In the meantime, please try these steps on your device:
- Close the Google Photos app and re-launch it.
- Sign out and sign back in to Google Photos with the same Google Account.
- Clear App data/cache:
- Open your device's Settings app (not the Google Settings app).
- Touch Apps.
- Select Google Photos in the list.
- Touch Clear data/cache
- Update the Google Photos app on your Android phone:
- Visit the Google Play Store.
- Open Google Photos.
- Touch on Update.
- Restart your device.
Keep me posted.

Answer:
Thank you for your reply Nadia.
Yes, I am able to upload photos at original quality through my computer through the web version of Google Photos.
With the other steps, neither closing the app, nor signing out and then back in made a difference. However, when I cleared the data and the cache, upon re-opening the app, it asked me whether or not I wanted to upload in High quality, or original quality, and I was able to select original quality. I double checked to see if it actually had it set up to do so in the Backup and Sync menu, and it said that it did, but when I left that menu and returned to the menu, it was set to High Quality again, with the Original quality greyed out as before. I cleared the data/cache again, got the same result. Uninstalled the app and re-installed it, and got the same result.
Google Photos App is up to date. Restarting the device did not help.
Hopefully that gives some more insight.

Hello Sissy,
Welcome to the Google Photos Help Community.
Just to let you know that the Device Folders that you see in the Google Photos "Menu" option shows all the albums from your gallery irrespective of the album being backed up to your Google Photos.
Incase if you don't want to backup any device folder (Messenger) to your Google Photos, You can turned off back & Sync for the device folder that you don't want to backup? Settings > Back up & Sync > Back up device folders > Choose folder that you don't want to back up.
You can choose the folder by tapping Back up device folders from the settings on Google Photos App and select the folder that you don't want to back up. Folder can include:
- Photos/Videos that you've downloaded.
- Screenshots that you've taken.
- Photos/Videos saved by other apps.
Check out this handy help center article for more information on "Change "Back up & sync" settings".
Let me know if this helps.

Hi everyone,
I wanted to clean up my Iphone gallery so I logged into web version of google photos on my mac (which is synced with my iphone). After one hour of deleting photos in Google photos on my computer I have found out, none of them disappeared from my iPhone gallery. Normally when I take photo with my camera it automatically shows in Google Photos on my mac, but I don't know how to delete them via the computer. thank you

Answer:
Up until recently this was possible. I have been doing this for years - deleting in browser on MacBook was triggering a notification in my google photos app on iPhone that images have been deleted using another device. There was an option to select "delete from my iphone device". This is a very recent change (the inability to sync the changes) and it would be nice for it to be added back.

Dose "iPhone gallery" that you say mean "camera roll" or another?
Normally when you take a photo with your iPhone camera, it will be saved into the storage area managed by iOS (iPhone user may call its location camera roll).
Google Photos app will load it and automatically upload it to the cloud of Google Photos. As the result of that, a photo will be shown in Google Photos web page (https://photos.google.com/).
Even if you delete a photo from the web page which synced with the iPhone, Google Photos app on the iPhone cannot delete a same photo from the storage of the iPhone because it managed by iOS, but Android allows the app to delete it.
I'm not sure why you want to clean up your iPhone by using a sync of Google Photos via the computer or what is your purpose, though you can access directly to clean up an iPhone.
Answer:
Hi
yes I am talking about the default gallery in my Iphone (probably camera roll then :)). I find much easier deleting pics on my computer rather than on my camera (especially when selecting one picture from a session of 10 for example). That's why I was hoping I can delete them in Google Photos web and they will be also removed from Iphone camera roll :/

Unfortunately, it may not entirely a bug, and it's up to Google to fix it. From the beginning Google Photos app couldn't automatically delete it on iOS by syncing, so Google might have decided to stop app notifications as iOS updates progress.
You should submit your feedback on the official way, as it will not reach Google when you report it as bug here.
It is wrong that you blame me associating my incomplete post with the fact that you have lost the option. If you want to point out to me, the point should be that I failed to focus on the essence of the question as a result. Because I had already known the option you mentioned as I replied previously and I have posted about the option many times since 2017.
Actually I'm not sure about recent changes in Google Photos specs for iOS device, because I changed my cloud storage to another service for uploading photos of mobile devices. However, I know old spec, I should not allow that you say "should not reply to people without having any clue". Here is a place where all users can post freely, but if you find something different from your experiences, you just have to simply point it out and ask correction.
At least, I was having a clue as my previous reply was going to mean what you mentioned. Which means, even if you delete a photo from the web page, Google Photos app on the iPhone cannot delete "automatically" a same photo from the storage of the iPhone, because it's managed by iOS.
I should regret that I told only a different point between iOS/Android and omitted the word "automatically\

I understand your points but unfortunately reporting the bug to Google will end up where all the other ones end up - which is nowhere. Each time i visit one of these forums the only thing i find is threads that end up unresolved. I am not certain why you have seen that feature failing in the past as I have been using it (almost daily) for several years now. Whatever is deleted using my laptop generates a prompt in Google Photos for iOS - under "For You tab -> Manage Your Library -> Organization). Anyways - it is just one more convenient feature that Google takes away but as it is a free service we cannot expect it to be supported the same way as a paid one.Update: the feature magically re-appeared literally as I was typing...

It's just that a push from Google's server to your app had been delayed for some reason. Not all pushes (Notification) always have to arrive in real time, though the user may be annoyed.
I was taken up time with a misconception report that had no problems, and I was blamed by you on something different from your problem (for misleading by my mis-writing in first posting here), so I felt as if the purpose was to blame me. However, I never wrote such as "I have seen that feature failing in the past\

These comments were/are incorrect. Using the phone to make changes is a tedious activity and Barbara can benefit from knowing how it is really supposed to work (assuming she is still following this thread). Managing photos using computer is a lot more practical and with proper Google Photos permissions the iOS device should have no trouble performing deletions.

After all, your reading seems to be problematic...
Yes,I already acknowledged that my first post to Barbara (the first sentence you pasted) had an inaccurate part (missing 'automatically'), and explained the background to you.
However, you cannot say that the 2nd sentence you pasted was incorrect.
It might be inaccurate because it was my guess, so I said "might have decided" to your mysterious report, but you don't have ability to say "my guess was incorrect". What caused my dumb guess that you want to blame was your mysterious and dumb report. And after your report also turned out to be wrong, you cannot say that my guess was incorrect.
I have answered your misconception seriously. I wonder why your brain asserts that my answer to you is also "incorrect" in spite of the fact you brought the wrong reports. It looks very insidious as if you posted lies information deliberately and gave my guess a kick.
I have never denied that the iOS device should have no trouble performing deletions with proper manual permissions since beginning to answer. However, it was my error to take Barbara's question as being similar to many other questions. Unfortunately that's over. Even if you don't blame it, that's what I should reflect on, but I'm a volunteer and not a professional or not having even an expert badge. You don't have to relentlessly accuse me.

Now that with the purchase of Google Pixel 4 free cloud storage is no longer available in original quality but in high quality, I want to download the "original quality" photos that I took with my previous Pixel (1, 2 and 3). I no longer have my phones since they were supposed to be uploaded to Photos on the go, so the only backup I have now is Google Photos on the web.

Anyone know how to look for those photos that were taken with a Pixel phone? Any search filter in Google Photos?

Just because you can see photos by opening the Google Photos app, that doesn't necessarily mean they've been backed up. Google Photos also acts as a viewer for photos that are stored on your phone.

I have a normal Samsung, so I don't know details.
The problem is that Google is double stupid by not offering a comfortable way to download all what you have on Photos now and that will be a terrible ammount including many large videofiles.
So straight downloading in selected sets of about 500 from photos.google.com will be a hopeless and then the only method available is www.google.com/settings/takeout for Photos only and then you will need double space on computer for unpacking a large amount of 2 GB zips.
Then you will get 3 or 4 years of dayfolders with files and metadata (json) and it will be a hell of a job to compact that chaos to 3 or 4 neat yearfolders (all zips can be trashed then).
The json textfiles can be left out, but may contain some descriptions typed. All further exif-info is in the files themselves and if not, it is low quality stuff recieved from social media.
If you view the technical info in the sidepanels, you can see the exact camera-name, eg Pixel-1
Like shown below for another camera:

So if you type that exact name in the searchbox, you probably will see all pictures shot with the Pixel-1, but then: hard to select up to 500 for downloading (larger amounts may cause problems with zipping).
Good luck
Answer:
Rinus is correct, the release of the Pixel 4 with no unlimited original quality images does not change anything for the Pixel 1, 2, or 3 backups, those will continue to have free original quality images forever (Pixel 1) or until the listed end date for 2 & 3.
However if you still want to download all your OQ photos, Takeout is the best way to do so.

If your photos were previously backed up to Google they would be visible at photos.google.com or in the app (on your new phone). If they're not there, did you ever see the photos in another location, such as on the photos.google.com website or the app on another device?
At the top of the Photos section of the app, it will tell you the status of your backup. Unfortunately it does not indicate the status of individual photos.
This indicates backup is pending (recent photos not yet backed up)
This indicates backup is complete
This indicates backup is disabled for this device or account
Could these photos also be backed up anywhere else- service provider backup (I know Verizon offers this), Dropbox, OneDrive, etc? I suggest looking in every possible place just in case.

Hi
I recently changed job and my new job provided me with an iPhone and I can't seem to get Google Photos to work as it should.
I have two problems and I suspect they're connected.
1 I can't see my partners photos. The album (neither in the sidebar or in the shared tab) doesn't show up in the iOS app. It works fine on the web (both phone and computer) and on my old Android phone.
The new photos my partner takes also doesn't populate my feed in the iOS app, but it does on other platforms except when I log out or reinstall the app, then the photos she has taken up until that point populates my feed, but still not new ones.
Documentation: https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipNAuh4on8uBuCT5WDRNWYYZ1yl8-uXTt4eWlBz8l5c_AcZssabONJV6UIQndBb4PQ?key=c1ZQUGV1dFpKeTRtcGVuNEIzTlZzcDA1SHJoV2p3 (the "billeder from Line" is missing in the iOS app)
2 I can't search faces in the iOS app but it works on all other platforms.
Documentation: https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipPVUmBiVC1g-bLX0jycDok3plu1RMZzD088ToQ_J9NFYw4WILpq3azbzTIYgWbnZw?key=VS13aVFNRTc5azdiamRSRUxENkg2bG5nQ3gycnBn (the face search is not available in the iOS app)
What I have tried:
I have tried to remove and readd the sharing (from other platforms as the option is not available in the iOS app).
I have reinstalled the app perhaps 20 times and removed all google-apps from the phone and safari, and then reinstalled and logged in again.
I tried to log in with my partners account, and it worked as it should in the beginning. Then I logged in and out a bunch of times (tried to get it to work on my account) and the same problem occurred with her account.
What I have not tried:
To log into a different iPhone as I didn't have one available.
Edit: The Sharing tab isn't updating at all. E.g. I cant see the two albums I shared above from web.

Hi Mike,
Thanks for reaching out to the Google Photos Help Community.
I certainly understand the importance of being able to view videos. Could you please confirm, if you were able to view videos on your device before the upload? Also, are you using the backup & sync tool or the web version of the Google Photos?
In the meantime, please try these steps on your browser:
- Sign out and sign back in to Google Photos (photos.google.com) with the same Google Account.
- Clear your cookies and cache.
- Try Incognito/private window.
- Try a different browser to see if it is a browser related issue.
- Manually upload videos:
- On your computer, open photos.google.com.
- At the top right, click Upload.
- Find and select your videos.
- Click Open.
If possible, try checking the videos from another device to see if that helps.
Keep me posted.
Best,
Nadia

I copy the image link from photo and then put that in group and although I can see pics others cannot.
This has not always happened so I do not understand why it is now.
Also I saw somewhere that my storage seems empty and I should think something should be there considering how many albums I have.

My husband and I are sharing partners on Google photos. But recently, I have noticed that I can only see 1 or 2 of the photos he takes every day!
Answer:
Sheba,
Good afternoon. You cannot use the URL to hotlink to one of your uploaded pictures in Google Photos. The service is not intended to be used in that way. Any links you copy/paste to your pictures are not guaranteed to remain static, and will most likely not work for other people.
If you want to share your pictures or embed them elsewhere, you will have to use Google Drive or some other service.
Regards,
~ Greg
Answer:
Hi thanks for reply
I have been using that for some time without problems until recently.
What is the point of having albums then .
I have so many there now and if I just wanted to view them myself I could have kept them in my photo file.
So now I don'''t know what to do as I can only move one pic at any time with my laptop.
Answer:
@Sheba Kendall
You wrote: "What is the point of having albums then?"
Albums (with one or more photos) can be shared by using their shareable link.
For example https://photos.app.goo.gl/ayykqY1U3Yk9qHRB7 is the short link to an album I made and shared some time ago. Anyone with the link can see the photos in the album, and I think that the link is (intended to be) stable.
In your original post I thought (and maybe Greg did too) that you were talking about "embedded" links to see the photo on a site, which is a different use, and I understand is not supported by Google Photos.
Answer:
was talking about embedded ones then as I used url to put them on sites which you say is not permitted
I do not need links the other way
Answer:
@Sheba
You say "I was talking about embedded ones".
That's what I (and Greg) thought, but your remark "What is the point of having albums then" confused me. I did not see the link between embedded photos and albums.
Answer:
I have a workaround that involves using Blogger.com.
As Greg said, Google Photos is simply not intended as a photo hosting site ... except for Blogger! Blogger is Google's blogging site and you can embed Google Photos by simply clicking on Insert photo and From Google Album Archive (this gets photos from Google Photos albums) Any picture you choose will be embedded into that blog post for all to see once it is published.
Now ... when you view that blog post, you can right-click the image and copy image address, and that URL can be used to embed elsewhere.
Not something I'd recommend if you need to do this a lot, but it works in a pinch.

I found this solution somewhere else, it seems that the pictures from the gallery can be used for astronomy.
When we create a shared album and photos from it, they are displayed on the page.
Here in this topic, I used the picture from Google Photos https://infomiasto.eu/forum/topic/zyciorys-cv-wymagany-w-rekrutacji-na-studia-po-co/ - if it is displayed it means that it is displayed and you need to choose a shared photo album from it.

I am moving pics to my Photobucket account as there I can keep private or share and can copy and paste anywhere
So problem solved.

My husband and I are sharing partners on Google photos. But recently, I have noticed that I can only see 1 or 2 of the photos he takes every day!
He has been taking many more photos every day and shows them to me on his phone (a Samsung). They are uploaded to his Google photos account, but I can't even see them under shared libraries from my account on my Pixel 2. I can see one or two of them at most.
What is going on? Why can't I see all of his pictures any more? I can't seem to find an answer any where. It's really frustrating. Thanks

I am trying to delete the Google Photos app from my iPhone and also remove all of my photos from Google drives. I understand you need to: 1. log into your Google account; 2. delete the photos; 3. then on your iPhone dismiss the window that asks if you want to delete photos from this device. Google Photos doesn't offer the ability to lock photos or albums. Everything is private until you choose to share it, but if you're concerned with someone viewing images or albums on your phone I'd recommend setting up a phone screen lock, or there's 3rd party apps that can create password protected folders.

Hello Sandra,
Thanks for writing back.
As you've mentioned that face recognition works on the web version of Google Photos, just turn OFF and ON face grouping option on your iOS device by following the below steps:
- On your iPhone & iPad, open the Google Photos app
.
- Sign in to your Google Account.
- Tap Menu
Settings
Group similar faces.
- Next to "Group similar faces," turn the switch OFF and then again ON.
Check out this handy help center article to "Find people, things, & places in your photos".
If that doesn't help, I'd suggest you try some of these basic troubleshooting steps:
On your iOS Phone:
- Sign out of your Google account and sign back in.
- Delete the Google Photos app and reinstall again.
- Restart your iOS phone: Hold the power button (top right edge of device) and home button (bottom circular button beneath screen) together for about 5-7 seconds until you see an Apple logo; when you see the logo, let go (the phone isn't deleting anything, just refreshing).
- Take a look at your Wi-Fi connection and make sure it's up and running (it doesn't hurt to disconnect it and reconnect it).
Keep me posted.
Thanks,
Sonya

Hi Tim,
Thanks for posting on the Google Photos Help Community.
Just to confirm, are you referring to backup all photos and videos from your device to Google Photos and downloading photos/videos from Google Photos to your device?
If so, please follow the steps in this help center article to save/backup photos and videos you take with your device's camera and photos saved on your phone to your Google Photos library.
Also, you can also download photos and videos from your account to your device. Here's how:
- On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Photos app
.
- Select a photo or video
- Tap More
Save to device. If the photo is already on your device, this option won't appear.
You may also visit this help article for information on how to Download photos or videos.

But what you want is impossible and maybe a wrong idea also.
If your pictures are on Google Photos, they can be viewed and shared (also via Whatsapp) in the Google Photos app on your phone, so why do you want to store them on that phone also (on an inserted sd-card I suppose).
The only benefit I can see is that you can view them without the need of being online.
Please explain because there is a solution, but not comfortable either.

Just to let you know that if your photos are completely backed up to your Google Photos. You can still log in with the same Google Account on your new phone or on web version of Google Photos and access and download them.
Incase if your Google Photos aren't synced on your new phone, there might be a possibility that your account isn't set to sync. Go to your main mobile Settings > Accounts > your Google Account and check if the Google Photosis set to sync.

Steven,
Backing up your pictures and videos to Google Photos does not involve deleting any of them. If you have backed up pictures successfully to Google Photos, they will all be visible in the app and on the Photos website, regardless of what's in the pictures and videos.
My suggestion is that you check the Photos website to see if your pictures are actually backed up. If they are not visible on the website, then they have not actually been backed up.

If they are not there, it has either been over 30 days, they weren't uploaded into Google Photos in the first place, or they were manually deleted from the Trash.

Answer:
Hi John,
Syncing will eventually kick in after you boot up. 20 GB could take a really long time to upload, especially if the internet upload speed isn't great. You don't need to wait until it finishes syncing - when you fire up the computer again, syncing will resume where it left off.

To assist you better, could you please confirm where exactly are you trying to backup? Is it on Google Photos or on Google Drive?

Answer:
Hi Arthur,
Thanks for writing back.
I completely understand where you're coming from. Since there are large number of photos that are being backing up/syncing at once, it might take some time. Hence, I'd suggest you wait for some time and check them again. Also, I'd suggest you check your internet connect and speed in order to speed up the backup process.
Meanwhile, as you're trying to download the photos from Google Photos onto your computer to save it back to Google Drive, you can download the photos from web (photos.google.com) by clicking on the "Download All" option. If you don't see the "Download All" option, please follow the below steps:
- Log on to photos.google.com on your computer.
- Sign in to it.
- click on the Photos option on the left.
- Select the photos you want to download. (Click the first photo in its upper left corner. The photo will now be selected. Now scroll down to the last photo, hold shift, and click the last photo. This will select all photos in your library).
- On the top right corner, click on the three dots icon.
- Click on Download. This will download all the photos that you've selected in zip format. You can then unzip them using any archive utility.
However, as the photos are in large numbers, could you please try downloading the photos through Google Takeout, be sure to unselect all products except Google Photos.
Keep me posted.
Best,
Sonya

I can download all the photos via Google Takeout, but my main purpose was to keep it sync'd for the intent of scanning/deleting duplicate files via a third-party program.
If I downloaded via Takeout without maintaining sync and delete the duplicates, that wouldn't affect what is on Google Photos.

I used to hotlink my blogger images from my google archive. Now they don't show up anymore when the album isn't shared. This just happened overnight. When I change the sharing settings the links to the images will change completely so how do I fix this without having to adjust 1000's of hotlinks?
Answer:
this problem is not suitable for this forum about Google Photos because there is no direct relation between Google Photos and Blogger.
But it is not clear what you mean with an hotlink because I don't see any change in my testblog: they pictures are still in the blogs as long I don't change their backups in my Google archive to Private.
Answer:
You might have luck posting this question in the Blogger community as well. I can't think of what could have happened to cause a change in your archives.
Answer:
Same problem happened to me in WordPress. There are several threads on this topic sadly with no resolution thus far.

I am trying to delete the Google Photos app from my iPhone and also remove all of my photos from Google drives. I understand you need to: 1. log into your Google account; 2. delete the photos; 3. then on your iPhone dismiss the window that asks if you want to delete photos from this device. (If you do not dismiss the window the photos are deleted from your Apple photos on the phone.) I understand you can then safely remove the App without risking losing photos.
I have logged in to my google account and there are no photos stored there. The Google Photos app on the phone says backup is to my Yahoo account but there are no photos there either. Where are the Google photos backed up?

Hi John,
Welcome to the Google Photos Product Help Forum!
>>>>> I understand you can then safely remove the App without risking losing photos.
WRONG..
You are doing something which is not a mainstream workflow, and people's environment's are different (versions of OS, Apps, and settings, whether iCloud Photo Library is enabled, etc.). What you describe MAY work without issue but the important thing is to move slowly try the approach with one or two test photos first. Stop immediately if something does not seem to make sense. Don't delete ~Recently Deleted~ album (on iOS or Trash in Google Photos until you are positive you still have everything).
Actually, make sure you have some type of external backup (e.g., on a non-synched USB drive) of your images if you would be heartbroken if you lost any of them.
Note: I might be overly conservative but we see people lose photos all the time (usually because they thought what they were doing makes sense).
If you don't see any photos in the following in any of your Google Accounts (Gmail or Yahoo special case) at this address, then they are not in Google Photos:
If you somehow backed them up to Google Drive they may be in here someplace (it depends on how you did it): https://drive.google.com/
It is possible that the Photos are showing in the Google Photos App on your phone but were never backed up. This might be because you never connected to Wi-Fi and opened the app when Backup & sync was On. This is not the case if you saw the "Backup complete" message (or Cloud with checkmark icon).
Good luck!

Hi Robert,
See if this helps: Add, move, or import contacts
As for photos the easiest way is to share you library from the old account to the new account and then on the new account save those save those photos. All the info you need here: Share your Google Photos library with a partner
