Question: When I download a photo from an album to my PC, the description details are not seen in the metadata.

I am trying to create a backup of a Google Photo Album on my PC, along with the description details …

I am trying to create a backup of a Google Photo Album on my PC, along with the description details of each photo, which I have spent hours on. However when I download the photos, the description details are not there.  For example, if I delete that photo from the online album( send to bin) and then re-upload the same photo from my downloaded one,  the description details are no longer there.  How do I backup photos with description details just in case something goes amiss at Google Photos and they lose my album altogether. I cant afford to lose the detailed descriptions of my photos.  I have also tried Google Take out, which has the description as a separate .json file, but there is no way of re-uploading that information to the photo.

Answer:

Hello Manohar,

Thanks for posting in the Google Photos Support Community.

This is an intended behavior with Google Photos. Photos will get downloaded without the description when downloaded to back to a device.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Regards,
Amanda

Answer:

That is a shame. Prior to March 2018 before GooglePhotos totally ditched Picasa, I was able to import the images from GooglePhotos to Picasa and the descriptions were all backed up with the images in Picasa. If my images were deleted from GooglePhotos I was then able to re-upload the image  with its description (from Picasa), back into GooglePhotos. The important thing was that the descriptions were backed up elsewhere.  It has taken days to create descriptions for each image on my holiday to Rome and now there is no way of backing this up.  Surely Google should have  considered this before disbanding Picasa altogether?  At least they should now provide an alternate method  to do the same.  Doe anyone know how this can be done or is there any other online image storage that has this backup feature, for I might just switch over to that instead of using GooglePhotos?

Answer:

I have been planning to upload dozens of scanned family photo albums to Google, but it is very important to me that family members can download all of the details I add (names, places, dates). Is there now a way to do this with Google Photos, or do I need to use a different website?

Does anyone know a photo storage/organizing site that makes it easy for others to download information about the people in the photos?

Answer:

@Jennifer
It is not wise to use Google Photos for a totally different reason: these scanned files have no real shooting dates and that simply means that they land in unpredictable places in the Photos-library and in wrong order in albums. It is a very tuff job to prevent these ugly problems: see this link

Because it are no thousands, it is much better to use Microsoft OneDrive which is the basic cloudservice on a modern Windows computer. Then the pictures are sorted on their filenames and your captions are preserved and downloadable for shared viewers.
You also can use a main folder shared with several subfolders for different members in the family-tree.
You have 5 GB for free and it maybe wise to export your edited files in a smaller size like 2048px before uploading to OneDrive. Just to retain good quality within much less megabytes.

When you are on Mac, iCloud maybe a more comfortable choice but I have no experience with that cloud.
Good luck

PS: because I am "out-of-service" here, other volunteers may proceed with more details if you have follow-up questions.

I purchased the pixel 3 XL last year, and it came with the ability to backup all my photos in original quality. I know this is supposed to work till 2022 or something like that, but if I am to switch over to the Pixel 4 XL, does this mean I lose access to the unlimited storage?

Answer:

I would love the answer to this as well. I think it's only fair for early adopters and those who have had unlimited storage until 2022 to keep it until 2022.

Answer:

Sorry just to add, you wont lose the unlimtied original quality backup from the pixel 3 until 2022. But if you switch and backup from the Pixel 4 you wont have that option, the original quality photos from the 4 will use storage

I meant photos taken after no more storage space and before purchasing more space. Supposedly, they are backed up as high quality only. Are they automatically uploaded again as original quality after I purchase more storage? Thank you.

Answer:

Hello there,

Thanks for posting in the Google Photos Support Community.

Your upload settings doesn't really depend on the storage or storage purchase neither does it change unless manually changed. So your upload settings would automatically change by itself. It will always remain the same before and after the purchase of Google quota storage.

Amanda

Hello,

Thanks for your feedback, however, i think my question was not clear enough.

    Hello there,

Welcome to the Google Photos Support Community.

Could you please elaborate the issue or your query for me to assist you better? Are you referring to downloading photos/videos from the Google Photos library back to your phone photos gallery?

If you're trying to download the backed up Google Photos photos back to your device and it's a huge amount of photos and videos to download, you can use google.com/takeout to export your data, you will have to extract the archive and manually transfer/download it to your device or external storage device.

You could use takeout via your mobile device as well, but you may have to source a program to decompress the archive and you also need to ensure you have enough space on the device to fit your entire library. By doing this, the photos from cloud will get downloaded to your phone.

But if it's few photos, you can also manually download them. here's how you can do so:
    • Open the Google Photos app on your Android device.
    • Sign in to it.
    • Select the photo you want to download.
    • Click on Download/Save to device.

I synced photos from PC to Google Drive, all good.  Those photos show up on Google Photos website but only some on iOS (both iPhone & iPad).  Can't see any consistency to what shows versus what does not?  Been stuck like that with no obvious change for hours.

The "sync photos & Videos form Google Drive" is checked ON.

The "Backup & sync" is OFF.  I don't want to automatically back-up camera roll & this was never an issue before.

Have tried to delete and re-install the iPhone app but same shows up?

Why is not consistent between website & iOS??

    Answer:

Hi Ian, I have tried to recreate your problem on iPad with Google Photos v3.22.200155109 and iOS 11.4 but it works  flawlessly.

Not much I can do to help, the only thing I always do when I delete and re-install is to power down and power up after deleting.

If that doesn't work all I can suggest is that you leave feedback  There appear to be ongoing recurring reports regarding 'Asynchronous Photos'  Please submit feedback via the app and enable the option to include a copy of the logs.  If you can title your feedback 'Asynchronous Photos between web and iOS' it will add to the numbers so that this work can be prioritised.

Thanks for answer - still same issue but I have noticed the photos do exist in iOS Photos app (when I search with Drive folder name, they show up) so looks like an issue with the timeline.  They show fine on web but inconsistent on iOS timeline, despite having the correct dates I'm pretty certain - any ideas?

    Answer:

Sounds like a placeholder mismatch, try going to the web, search for the album again, select all the photos and do a null date change: Click on the 3 dot menu option Edit date & time: Shift date & time: don't change anything just press Preview then Save. This should reset the app placeholders and show the photos in the right order, Hopefully , Peter

    Hello Lucas,

Thanks for posting in the Google Photos Support Community.

Your photo may have a location if:
    • Your camera's GPS saves your location.
    • Google Photos might estimate a location using information such as your Google Location History (if turned on), which is stored in your Google Account. Check your Google Location History. You can edit or remove a location that was estimated by Google Photos.
    • You added a location.

    Hi Amanda,

Thank you for your quick reply and for the helpful list of items.  I will look into each of the items using your bullet list:
    • My camera is set to not use location information.  I have confirmed that the metadata of those images does not include a location.  Also, my phone is set to GPS only with a simulated GPS location, so even if the camera were set to use location information, the location would be different from the location indicated in the automatically generated Google Photos album title (e.g., Seattle).

The Google Photos settings can be changed anytime, but the changed settings cannot change the upload to factory settings. Any changes made to the Google Photos settings would reflect in the next upload and not in the old upload/sync.

Because I am quite unsure if you can re-activate these accounts anymore after such a long delay without active usage for mailing.

On your computer with a lot of free space on disc you can try to log-in to https://www.google.com/settings/takeout with account 1 and then deselect all and then only select Google Drive and Google Photos and then go to the bottom to proceed.

Thereafter do the same for account 2 etc. ect.

    Good luck

    Hello Naveen,

Welcome to the Google Photos Support Community.

Could you please elaborate the issue or your query for me to assist you better? Are you referring to backing up your phone's camera photos to Google Photos? If yes and if the photos are available in your Android device, then please give the below steps a try:
    1. Open the Google Photos app .
    2. Sign in to your Google Account.
    3. At the top, tap Menu .
    4. Select Settings   Back up & sync.
    5. Tap "Back up & sync" on or off.
Things to keep in mind about this setting:
    • Changing backup settings will affect all apps that use Back up & sync, such as Google Drive.
    • If you have Back up & sync on, deleting the Google Photos app from your device will not turn it off. To turn off Back up & sync, follow the instructions above.
Here's a useful help article to know about backing up photos and videos to Google Photos.
      If no, keep me posted.

Question: I need help with receiving and sending emails

I need help trying to receive and send emails

      Hi Nikengi Thomas,

Based on your question, I assume your storage was full and you can't send/receive emails.

Please visit http://one.google.com/storage and check which service took the space. Once you find it, go to that service and remove unwanted things from there. If your Google Photos took too much space, I would suggest you to use High Quality instead of Original Quality in storage setting. In "High Quality" option, you have unlimited storage inside Google Photos.

Once you done the above process, you will get free space and you can send/receive emails.

Please let me know, if this answer helps you.

Question: Can i recover data deleted from the trash?

Recover data deleted from the trash

      Hi Johnny,

I’m sorry, it’s not possible to recover photos permanently deleted from the Google Photos Trash. However, you may install to your Android device a deleted photo recovery app https://play.google.com/store/search?q=recover%20deleted%20photos&c=apps and run a scan for anything to recover.

In addition I recommend that you contact the Google Drive support team to see if any deleted files may be recovered. Just open the Google Drive https://support.google.com/drive/?hl=en&authuser=0#topic=14940&contact=1 contact form, click Missing or deleted files, select a contact option, and be sure to tell them you permanently deleted files in Google Drive.

I have chosen to move my photo library to Google Photos and have successfully set up the Windows-based app and the desktop sync. However, the interaction with my Android phone puzzles me.

      • If I take a photo with my phone, that photo shows up in Google Photos. If I delete the photo from Gallery, the photo remains in Photos.
      • If I copy a photo from Gallery to my computer, the photo shows up as having been taken now. If I use software to change the creation date of the photo to be, say, a month ago, Photos still shows it as having been taken today.

So I need to develop a better understanding of how Google Photos interacts with my Galaxy Note 8. TIA...

      Hi Rick,

Welcome to the Google Photos Help Forum.

Just to let you know, deleting a photo from the device gallery will not remove it from Google Photos. But if you'd delete photos and videos from Google Photos, they will also get removed from:
      • photos.google.com and any synced devices
      • Google Photos albums
      • Google Photos movies when you edit them.
      • Google Drive, for photos and videos that are synced with Google Drive.
      • Any shared albums you may have added them to.
Also, could you please confirm if you're referring to the Google Photos folder of your device when you say my computer?

If yes, the photos will take the date on which you'd upload them to the Google Photos folder of your My Drive.

For more information, please check the Help Center Article on deleting photos and videos.

      Hope this helps.

      Best,

In general you can not get closer then about 50 cm (20 inches), so real micro photography is not possible without any added frontlens unit. Ask the camera-shop.

      Answer:

I was first trying to report an issue with photos not being backed and was thwarted by this problem. I have now succeeded in logging that problem.
So this issue is that when trying to log a problem with Google photos on this forum I had the problem that at the last step when ticking the box to get notified of responses I was told I had notification turned off and was offered a link to change the setting which was a broken link.

      Have I managed to explain?

In backup and sync i select the (root) folder on my PC which holds my historic photos (about 26000) but it ignores many photos. It seems to scan the right number of photos but they are not uploading the missing ones . As a test I selected a group of the missing photos and dragged and dropped them onto photos.google.com and they uploaded fine. Any suggestions?

      Answer:

Basically the fileformats not suitable for Google Photos will stick on Drive at https://drive.google.com/drive/computers and will use some additional storage-space.

Here you can read about the suitable formats for Google Photos:

The main problem with historic pictures on Photos is that their dates are random scanning dates, so it is hard to create neat thematic albums there.

I have no further ideas yet.

      Addition:

Maybe it just is your large amount - so you need to be more patient perhaps: Google has to work for the whole world and not for you only.

PS: I don't know what will happen with the dragged pictures - just don't try to interfere.

Hi, I am trying to upload google photos in filestack. When I connect to my account, I only see one folder named All Photos, and when I click on it, it says folder is empty. I know I have all my pictures saved in my google account as I can see all of them simultaneously in another web page and in my cellphone. I have tried to go in the google app, parameters, back up and sync, turn it ON, it does not work. And I tried login in and out several times from filestack. Nothing works.
      Thanks for your help.

      Hi Isabel,

we are unfortunately unable to assist you as this community covers only the Google Photos photo storage platform and its related Google apps, not third party products such as Filestack that access Google Photos. I suggest that you contact the Filestack support team. If needed, their engineers can get support from Google as explained on the Google Photos API site https://developers.google.com/photos/library/support/how-to-get-help

      Answer:

But apart from that: what would be the benefit for you to use Filestack next to Google Photos.
Just because you always can download selected pictures to some device folder (or to your computer) straight from photos.google.com

      Answer:

The reason I am using Filestack is because the company I want to develop my photos from asks me to download them into filestack to be able to have them printed. So when I go on their website, I need to choose where the pictures I want to print are. And since they are coming from my cellphone I need to access them through Google Photos. Then I chose which photo I want to develop and download them into filestack to have them printed.

      Answer:

Abnormal company: normally you would upload good quality files (preferable edited) into their ordering site and some current printservices in the US do have updated their sites to be able to connect to Google Photos directly and then you only need to collect them in an album on Google Photos for ease of ordering.

And you also can order prints straight via Google Photos now: see this link

I can't be more precise because I live in The Netherlands and there we have other printservices.
But my rule is: never wait on companies (including Google), but find your own way.
      Best.
