I was looking at my photos and noticed a folder with these pics that I've never seen before. Shows that they appeared on my phone a few hours ago but like I said I've never seen them and don't know where they came from. When I Googled the name of it I found results but everything was in Chinese and the translations only roughly said that other people experienced it too. It's totally freaking me out, has anyone experienced this??

Answer:

Hi Jenna,

Welcome to the Google Photos Help Community.

I certainly understand your concern regarding these photos showing up in your Google Photos Library. Please know that, Google Photos automatically backups camera photos and selected device photos to your account. These photos  backup only if they're in your device gallery/download folders or have been shared with you.

Let me know if you have nay additional questions.

Best,
Nadia

Answer:

Hello Jenna

This morning, I saved an image from google to place as my wallpaper and when I checked in my camera roll I found strange images of an old looking apartment as well as a video of a mini living room tour where you can barely hear any sound and only see for a slight second the feet of the person filming. I have never seen this apartment in my life and i do not understand why it is in my phone. As for your pictures, I think they might be from an artist named Geneviève Godbout, though i have no idea how they ended up in your phone.

Here are a couple of pictures that appeared in my phone:

Answer:

I've also experienced the same kind of issue's that you are describing! Every other day I check my "Gallery" & sure enough, there are35 picture's and avatar's from a couple video game's that I had been playing earlier! Is this some sort of virus or something? Can some'one please tell me why is this happening and how do I go about fixing this problem?

Answer:

Over 1800 pictures. Even some of mine I deleted keep popping back up. Camera roll on Facebook is affected also. Complained on Google and Facebook , no response yet. Started sometime in October 2019.

Answer:

Also happens to me.  3 sub folders in gallery, each of an aqua green square, a womans photo and several graphic symbols.  These are the new ones just now.

More today.

Answer:

Hi there,

Welcome to the Google Photos Help Forum.

I do understand the inconvenience as the face grouping feature of Google Photos is not working with all the people. Therefore, please follow the below steps to see if that helps:
    • On your iPhone & iPad, open the Google Photos app.
    • Sign in to your Google Account.
    • Tap Menu.
    • Select Settings.
    • Select Group similar faces
    • Turn off Face grouping and turn it on after a few minutes.
For more information, please check the Help Center Article on turning on face grouping.

    Keep me posted.

    Emma

    Answer:

The people feature is nice, but I also have all these nobodies in my people list and others who I do know I can't add.  You should be able to click on a person and delete them from you people list and add others who are not shown

I had an email that I used for EVERYTHING (not very smart of me I know but it was my first email I was ever allowed to have and the only one so I had no choice) given to me by my school. When I graduated, the email was locked because I was no longer in the school system. Unfortunately for me, this means I was locked out of my Google Photos account associated with the email, and because it's not a valid email anymore, I can't log in to change my email settings connected to the Google Photos account. Is there any way I can contact them to ask if I can get access to my old account even though the email isn't valid anymore? I lost literally all my pictures from 6th to 12th grade and it kinda blows.

    Thanks.

    Answer:

    Claire,

Good evening. Since your account was technically created and owned by your former school, you'll have to contact someone there and explain the situation. Perhaps there is a way they can reactivate your account temporarily so you can retrieve the information and pictures that you have in it.

Other than this suggestion, unfortunately there is nothing that any of the volunteers in this forum can do to help you get back your pictures.

My kids have recently started adding non-family members to our collaborative family album. We told them not to do it anymore. But it appears that there is no way to remove these people from the shared album.

Blocking them apparently will ONLY not show any comments or photos that they add. But they can still see the album contents. And, blocking them not only hides them from the album owner, and still gives them full access to see the album, it also blocks them on Hangouts and other google apps. We kind of still want to communicate with them, we just don't want them in our "family" album since they aren't family.

Unsharing the album deletes all the comments and the photos that the rest of the family members have contributed to the album, meaning that they would all have to somehow add the photos back to a new album one at a time and they would have to re-comment on every photo all over again to preserve the memories made in the comments. None of these are good options.

All we really want to do is make the existing link null and create a new link to the album that we can share back to the original, legitimate album members.

That way we can keep the collaborative album and not lose the photos and comments that have been shared by the legitimate members over the past few years. And we won't have people we don't want in the album having access to the album (whether we can see them there or not).

This seems like a reasonable request.

    Please help.

    Answer:

    Hi Mister,

Thanks for reaching out to the Google Photos Help Community.

Currently, there isn't a feature to change individual permissions on a shared album. However, you may turn off the options to 'Let others add their photos' . Here's how:
    1. Go to the shared album.
    2. Click More > turn off 'Collaborate'.
Let me know if you have any additional questions.

    Best,
    Nadia

    Answer:

Thanks for your reply. It doesn't however fix the problem. We actually want to keep collaborating and adding photos as a family. The kids added friends from school and other people who aren't part of the family. Because they are kids.

We want to remove these people and revoke their access to our personal photos. We understand there isn't a built-in way to do that. But it seems like a reasonable request. We don't want these people to have access to our photos anymore.

We, ourselves, would like to keep collaborating. It would be near impossible for us all to identify exactly which photos we have added over the years and to retype all our comments on the photos we have commented on. We have explained to the kids not to add anybody to the album. But it is too late now.

Since you don't have a method to remove these people, we'd like you to copy the album with the 3 or 4 people who have added photos or commented over the years. (Luckily, none of the people we don't want in the album have added photos or commented.) We can then invite the other people we want to see the album back to the album and you can delete the old link to our photos so people we don't want to have access to our photos won't have access. Again, this seems really reasonable when talking about somebody's personal photos and privacy.

Google Docs is an excellent example of how this could work. Perhaps you've heard of it?

Unfortunately, Google Photos exposes our personal photos to others without a way for us to un-share access that was given accidentally or ignorantly. The solutions of deleting the album, turning off sharing, or turning off collaboration either don't accomplish the privacy concerns or keep us from being able to keep the memories we've created together.

It would be much better if we could keep those in the album from being able to add additional people. This is where the problem arose and for anyone with kids, this is likely to come up again.

We have noticed that this issue has been brought up many times with the only solutions ever being offered either not actually revoking the unwanted third party people's access to the personal photos and/or losing the album's content (collaborated photos and comments, etc.).

Neither of these seem like acceptable solutions from a company with so many resources that houses so much personal information.

Please tell me the team is working on a better solution and will help us with this situation. I'd have to go to each of these 10 year old kids' houses (Some of them in other states) and make them log into their email accounts, join the album, block them, (meaning they would be blocked from other google service communication with us), delete the email with the link to our family photos, delete their trash folder, etc. Do you think their parents want us to come do that?

A short-term acceptable solution would be for you to change the link to the album so the old link no longer worked but the collaboration and comments could still all be intact. We could then invite other members back to the intact collaborative album with the new link.

    Looking forward to a resolution.

    Thanks.

    Answer:

    Hi Mister,

    Thanks for writing back.

Unfortunately, there isn't a feature to remove a person from the album and changing the link of the shared album. However, please feel free to share your feedback following these simple steps:
    1. Go to photos.google.com.
    2. At the top left, open the Menu , then select Send feedback.
Let me know if you have any additional questions.

    Best,
    Nadia

    Answer:

Please Google make it an option to REMOVE a single person from a shared album. The original poster is correct - this is a SIMPLE request. Help us manage our privacy better!! Unsharing the entire album and starting over is not a solution. Neither is blocking because I would have to have everyone in the album block the user (not just me).

    Answer:

    @all

This is a user-to-user forum and there is nothing we (also users) can do.

To request new features you can submit feedback (via main menu in https://photos.google.com/) but I have no idea whether that will have any effect. Many asked for other things (like sort by filename in albums) that were never implemented.

    Answer:

    @Keri
Removing a person from an album would not prevent him/her from viewing it. Anyone with the link can see. Also "blocking" is not efficient: the user can still view when not signed in. What you need is a completely new option: only specified email addresses can see. Since this is a user-to user forum you better send feedback directly to the team:
    1. At the top left, open the Menu , then select Send feedback.

    Answer:

    @Carol Hathaway
"Is it possible to unshare an album then re-add a limited group?"

    To unshare:
    • Open the album
    • Select 3-dots > Options
    • Turn "Share" off. The existing link becomes obsolete.
    To share again:
    • Turn "Sharing" on again. A new link is created which you can send to who you want.
Edited:   Note that all comments, likes, and photos added by others will be removed. You cannot save the comments and likes, but photos added by others can be saved to your library and added again to the album (as if it were yours).

    Answer:

    @Julie Skinner
"how do I get someone off & out of my linked album"
    You can't.
    • others can "leave" the album but you cannot remove them
    • you cannot remove invitees
    • you can turn "Sharing" off, but then no one can use that link anymore

    Answer:

"After you have saved the photos to your library, then you block someone, is there a way to find out which photos belonged to which albums?"
I don't think so. You should find something that distinguishes these photos from each other, like:
    • Probably the best (if present): Geo location data
    • Device taken (does not apply in your case)
    • Date taken
    • Upload date (see https://photos.google.com/search/_tra_ where they are sorted by upload date)

When I go in to my google photos account, click share on one photo, copy the short URL and then send it to someone, it shows my photo and my real name on the resulting webpage.  For security concerns, how can I prevent this from happening and only have the photo visible?

    Answer:

    Aaron,

Good afternoon. The Google Photos service is not designed for anonymous sharing like you've described. There is no way for you to prevent your name (or whatever name you have listed in your Google account) from being displayed as the owner of the image.

If you want to share pictures anonymously, you will need to upload them to a different service that allows you to share images without disclosing your identity.

You can see all your shared albums in the sharing tab.
And for photos shared with your partner on 'Shared library'. Well, I don't think there is a filter for you to see the photos shared on a particular year or time. Meanwhile, you can see all the photos that are being shared.

Question: backup my photos and videos

get back my picture and videos! please

    Hi Md Arshad,

If you have back up & sync on, photos and videos you delete will stay in your trash for 60 days. You can recover deleted items by following the below steps:

    1. Open the Google Photos app .
    2. At the top left, tap Menu , then Trash .
    3. Touch and hold the photo or video you want to recover.
    4. At the top right, tap Restore . That photo or video will be restored to your Google Photos library and added back into any albums it was in.
Incase, if you're unable to restore from the Google Photos, the following things could be the reasons:
    1. Photos and Videos moved to trash more than 60 days ago.
    2. Photos and Videos moved to trash, then emptied your trash.
    3. Photos and Videos moved to trash permanently deleted from your trash.
You can learn more here on how to recover your files in the help center:Google Photos Support- See if you can restore deleted photos & videos
    I hope this helps.

Hello - I am trying to understand why I would need / want to enable the Google Photos folder under My Drive.

I started using Backup & Sync at the end of 2017. Most of my pictures were stored on my computer, but I also had any pictures taken on my iPhone automatically uploading to Google Photos. When I setup Drive / Backup & Sync, I apparently checked the box for "Create a Google Photos folder" under Drive settings.  In the Google Photos folder under My Drive, there are subfolders titled 2008 (with one photo), 2014 (with three photos), 2017 (with what seems to be only the photos from the end of the year when I started using Backup and Sync), and 2018 (which seems to be all my photos from 2018). Why are these the only folders/pictures that show up in this location? When I go to Google Photos (not this Google Photos folder), I have lots of photos from every year that were uploaded via Backup and Sync from my computer to Google Photos.

So I guess my questions are:
    1) What is this Google Photos folder pulling from?
    2) Why did it not pull in all photos that are currently showing in my Google Photos?
    3) Why would a person want / need this Google Photos folder when all of their pictures are already in Google Photos either via Backup & Sync or automatic iPhone upload?
    4) What would happen if I deleted the Google Photos folder under My Drive? I found this in the help documents:

If you delete from the Google Photos folder in My Drive:

If you delete individual photos or videos, they will be removed from Google Photos.
If you delete folders (including the Google Photos folder), photos and videos won't be deleted in Google Photos. This is to avoid deleting all your photos and videos by accident.
If you move photos from the Google Photos folder to a different folder and delete them from there, they'll also be deleted in Google Photos.

Am I reading the above explanation correctly - If I delete the Google Photos folder under My Drive, the photos that show up within this folder would NOT be deleted off either Google Photos or off of my computer?

    Thank you for your help,
    Amy

    Answer:

Hi Amy, great question well put.

Please take a look at the document referred to below which shows the flow for the different sources of photos. The Google Photos folder main use is to download the iPhone or Android photos to a desktop computer.  If you don't use it you can turn off the setting and remove the folder and you photos in Google Photos will not be affected.

    Any question, please ask,
    Regards,
    Peter

    Answer:

"The Google Photos folder main use is to download the iPhone or Android photos to a desktop computer."
If that is the main use, it is very poorly implemented: albums, edits, captions (descriptions) etc are not synced and lost when downloading. Picasa3 at least added the captions on the fly when downloading, but Google decided to kill that option.

Google Photos is already private because it is secured with your Google Account credentials. It shouldn't be a case where some one else has the access to your Google Photos and Google Account, until you haven't shared your login credentials with anyone.

It can be possible, that your Google Photos account was open on her device Google Photos app by either of you or it can happen when an album is shared to you by others in Google Photos. Do you have any shared albums as such?

Could you please elaborate the issue or your query for me to assist you better? Were your photos backed up to Google Photos? If yes, it can be possible that the photos weren't uploaded successfully to Google Photos (cloud) and also make sure you're logged in to Google Photos with the same Google Account that you used during the backup. Photos/videos that are not synced or backed up, will still appear in Google Photos and will have this icon  (which means not synced/backed up) or some photos/videos will also show up with the two arrows in a circle mean backup is in progress.

Once the upload is complete there will be no icon on any photos/videos. Often, many of us misinterpret that they are all backed up because the photos/videos show up in Google Photos and we over see the icons on each photo/video. If the photos/videos weren't backed up they cannot be deleted from the Google Photos library nor Trash.

In case, you are uploading a large amount of data (photos/videos), please know that it might take 24-48 hours for the photos and videos to sync across all devices. Please ensure to have 'Backup & sync' enabled on the Google Photos settings while you're backing up your photos and videos. To check is the content is backed up, login in to photos.google.com to checked for your backed up photos and videos.

However, if you're sure they were backed up, I recommend you looking for your video here:
Meanwhile, also try giving the below steps a try once again in a sequence to help resolve the issue:
    • Close the Google Photos app and re-launch it.
    • Sign out and sign back in to Google Photos with the same Google Account.
    • Clear App data:
      • Open your device's Settings app (not the Google Settings app).
      • Touch Apps.
      • Select Google Photos in the list.
      • Touch Clear data.
    • Update the Google Photos app on your Android phone:
      • Visit the Google Play Store.
      • Open Google Photos.
      • Touch on Update.
Let me know how it goes.

    Best,
    Amanda

    Answer:

Hi Amanda, I have a similar issue. I do not recall any notification but suddenly all my photos back to December 2016 have disappeared from both my Android camera gallery and my Google photos app. When I log in on a PC they are also missing.

Interestingly, Instagram finds the missing photos and allows me to post them from the gallery. Does it mean they are stored somewhere but not showing/ inaccessible via Google photos?

    Answer:

    Hey M Figueiredo,

    Thanks for posting.

Maybe the photos weren't uploaded successfully at the first place to Google Photos (cloud). Hence, you're not able to find for them not.

When I back up photos from my iPhone 8 Plus, the colors seem much duller when viewing from other devices. The preview looks fine, but once I tap on it to open it, the colors become much darker and duller.  I think it's something to do with the phone because if I AirDrop the photo to my iPad and upload it, it looks fine. This issue happens with both HEIC and JPEG photos. Why is this happening, and if possible, how can I get it so the colors look alright on other devices?

    Ari,

Good afternoon. Your available storage is shared between Drive, Photos, and Gmail. So, if you want to remove or reduce the space used by the pictures and/or videos stored in Google Photos, you'll have to do that from the Google Photos website

Here are the instructions from the official Google Photos Help page:

Reduce the size of your photos & videos

If you have photos in Original quality and want to save some space, change your already backed-up photos and videos to High quality. This setting will not appear if you don’t have any photos in Original quality.
    1. On a computer, go to photos.google.com/settings.
    2. Click Recover storage. This will not change the quality of your future uploads.
Note: You can only recover storage once a day.
Photos or videos will not be changed to High quality if you’ve uploaded them with:
    • Google Drive
    • Your Pixel
    • Your Pixel 2 or 3 during your Original quality offer period
But it will change any photos or videos you’ve uploaded on:
    • Blogger
    • Google Maps
    • Google Photos
    • Google+
    • Hangouts
    • Panoramio
    • Picasa Web Albums
    • YouTube Web Channel Art
Let me know if you have additional questions.

    Regards,
    ~ Greg

Question: My iPad is not backing up & syncing even though it says complete unless I delete & reload app!!!

    Delete and reload app

    Hello there,

Thanks for posting in the Google Photos Support Community.

Unable to back up videos/photos can sometimes be upsetting. I'd recommend trying the below steps to check if they resolve the issue:
    1. Open the Google Photos app on your mobile device .
    2. At the bottom, tap Assistant .
    3. Read the first card. If it says:
    • "Waiting for connection" or "Waiting for WiFi": You need to either change your settings or connect to a WiFi or mobile network. Tap the card to change your settings.
    • "Back up & sync is off": Tap "TURN ON" on the card to back up your device's photos and videos, including ones you capture in the future.
    • "A photo or video was skipped": A photo or video on your mobile device doesn't meet our upload requirements:
      • Photos can't exceed 75MB or 100 megapixels
      • Videos can't exceed 10GB
    • "Backing up photos" or "Backup complete": This means your photos and videos should be saved.
Here are a few things you can do to increase the likelihood of background syncing of your videos in Google Photos:
    • Open the app more frequently (even if just for a few seconds).
    • When you finish a session, don't force quit the app by swiping it away.
    • Plug in your phone to charge.
    • Make sure Background Refresh is enabled.
    • Make sure you're not in Low Power Mode.
Login to photos.google.com (web interface of Google Photos) to checked for your backed up photos and videos.

Let me know how it goes.

I used to get push notifications on my iPhone from google photos when someone would add a photo or view a photo I shared to a shared photo album. I'm no longer getting these notifications. How do I turn them back on? I tried looking in settings on my google photos app (everything is turned on). I looked at the google photos app settings on the phone (no option to turn on notifications there). I also turned on sharing notifications for google drive on the phone, but that didn't work. I also looked on google photos from my computer and turned on browser notifications but I'm not getting them on my computer either. Please help

    Answer:

    Hello Beth,

Welcome to the Google Photos Support Community.

I'll be happy to help you. Please confirm the step how the photos were shared. When someone shares a photo/album with you:
    1. You may receive an email, or in-app notification, depending on the way it was shared.
    2. When you click a link to see the album, your profile image in the album will light up and a notification will be sent to the sharer. Learn how to leave an album.
    3. If you were shared to by email or phone number, and you join the album, your profile image will change to your Google Account profile image.
    4. Learn more about who can share with you.
    5. If you think someone is spamming you, you can block or report them.
See albums you've shared or joined:
    1. On your computer, go to photos.google.com.
    2. On the left, click Sharing.
    3. Under "Shared," you can see your shared albums and sharing activity, like comments and recently added photos. New sharing activity will be in bold.
To see people you've shared an album with:
    1. Open the photo, video, or album you shared.
2. Click More   Sharing options.
Here's a help article to share photos & videos in Google Photos for your reference. Also, this article will let you know more on how to get suggestions to share with your contacts.

    Keep me posted.

Recently my HTC 10 has stopped allowing Google Photo's to load. IMMEDIATELY says it's stopped working. I copied all photo's and video to my computer and thru the USB cable, I deleted all of them off the phone and shocked did not fix it. I tried to UNINSTALL but there is no feature (built into HTC 10). I tried to Update.. Says immediately says the last install was unsuccessful to uninstall and try installing again..  But you CANNOT.. There is NO uninstall feature anymore.. I disabled, forced stop.. I've tried everything I can think of.. SERIOUSLY NEED HELP!!!!!!!

    Answer:

    Hi,

    Sorry if you've already tried these solutions but I'll throw out some more suggestions;

Clearing the data and cache from Google Photos through Android settings.

Getting the Google Photos APK from APK mirror and installing that over the damaged installation.

    Restarting your phone

As a last last resort factory resetting your phone.

"Getting the Google Photos APK from APK mirror and installing that over the damaged installation." I'm not sure what you mean by this? I tried to uninstall but since it's built into HTC 10 when you buy the phone, the uninstall feature is "greyed out" and unclickable.. I tried to install overtop via google playstore market but it only has "OPEN" "UPDATE".. Neither will work..

    Answer:

What I mean by installing over the damaged version is going to this link: https://www.apkmirror.com/apk/google-inc/photos/photos-3-24-0-204162798-release/ finding the right version of Google Photos for your phone, downloading the application and installing it without using the Google Play Store.

You won't be able to uninstall the application but you can delete any data that it's stored, find the option to clear data and cache for Google Photos in the settings in Android, that should make the app the same way that it came with your phone.

    Answer:

OMG!!! That appears to have fixed it!!

Now one other issue has arrose.. Now that I have deleted all the pics and video's.. It appears to only be showing pictures and videos when connected to the internet since it's not actually on the phone anymore.. Is there a way to have it RESTORE those GOOGLE PHOTO's from online back to my phone without me having to re-upload all to the phone from the computer?

    Answer:

When I click an image/video and click the ":" dots, the download to device is NOT there.. Only "Archive" when I select more than 1 image.. I have 1,800+ images ;-)

    Answer:

If you've backed up all the photos/videos to the cloud, then as long as you have an internet connection then you'll be able to view every single photo. You'd only have to download ones you want to keep ready for when you are offline.

Question: How do I take old photos that are compressed and restore them to full resolution?

    Josh,

Good afternoon. If your pictures were uploaded to Google Photos in High Quality, then unfortunately there is no way to return them to their original state. However, the only instance where this might present a problem is if those pictures were originally larger than 16 megapixels. The High Quality upload option will reduce larger images down to 16MP. The reduction in file size, however, has resulted in negligible quality loss in almost every case, meaning that most of the time you cannot even detect any quality loss unless you zoom in several hundred percent. Since the vast majority of uploaded pictures are only ever viewed on a screen, any potential loss of quality like this will never even be noticed. Plus, if you plan to print out any of those pictures, you only need about 6MP in size to print an 8x10 photo with full quality, and 8x10 is typically the largest that most people would choose to print.

I had a card come up today looking back at this date seven years ago.  The problem is those pictures are from six years ago! I went into my photos & half of them have the correct year but the other half are a year earlier. Before you think I'm just forgetful these are pictures from my husband's funeral so I'm pretty sure not going to forget the date.

    Answer:

    Hi Jennifer,

You can change the dates of these photos on a desktop:

Just so you know, when you change the date and time of your photo, the edited date and time will appear in Google Photos. But if you share it to other apps or download it, it may show the original date and time saved by your camera.
    1. On your computer, go to photos.google.com.
    2. Place your cursor over a photo or video. To select the items you want to update, click Select .
    3. At the top right, click More .
    4. Click Edit date & time. If you selected more than one item, you'll see two options.
      • To specify a date and time for the first item and automatically adjust the dates and times for the other items as relative to that, click Shift dates & times.
      • To set the same date and time for all the items you selected, click Set one date & time.
    5. Follow the instructions to finish.

Question: How to get my pictures in my lost phone oppo f9

    My phone lost

    Jankaorie Medel,

I'm sorry for what you're experiencing. Unfortunately, we do not have access to any records about your account, photos, or other personal information.

The only thing we can do as volunteers here is to point you toward the official Google pages to help secure your account and/or perhaps locate your device.

If the pictures on your phone were previously uploaded to Google Photos, you can view and download them from the Google Photos website. However, if the pictures were not uploaded to your account, then unfortunately there is nothing that Google or any of the volunteers in this forum can do to help you get them back. Google can't help you recover files it never had in the first place.

I recommend these steps for securing your Google account and data:
    - find your device
    - security checkup of your account
    privacy checkup of your account
    - change your Google account password
    - enable 2-step verification
    - review your Google Play order history for suspicious activity; report unauthorized charges HERE

Let me know if you have additional questions about this.

    Regards,
    ~ Greg
