My Samsung S8+ shoot RAW images (.dng). I want them to be backed up on my Google Photos account using the original file size. But lately, I found out that my images are not backed up to its original size. The file is 25MB but when it was backed up to Google photos, it became 1.75MB and I noticed the quality has decreased. Is this a bug or thats just how Google Photos treat RAW files

Answer:

Not sure about this one, but from web upload experience original means identical in size. I would expect Android to behave the same, are you sure you have the correct setting in the app backup & sync settings. Not the online settings which only applies to direct web uploads. Also assuming you have never used the recover storage command on the web.

Answer:

No it's not a bug.
Google Photos treat all kinds of photo formats like that, whether it's RAW file or JPEG file, and no matter it's 10MB or 400 KB, Google Photos will always compress your uploaded photos to a more smaller size.

Question: I just deleted my photos from my device, Google account and trash, looking to recover these photos

verReco

Hi Rajnibadoni,

I’m sorry, it’s not possible to recover photos permanently deleted from the Google Photos Trash. However, you may install to your Android device a deleted photo recovery app https://play.google.com/store/search?q=recover%20deleted%20photos&c=apps and run a scan for anything to recover.

In addition I recommend that you contact the Google Drive support team to see if any deleted files may be recovered. Just open the Google Drive https://support.google.com/drive/?hl=en&authuser=0#topic=14940&contact=1 contact form, click Missing or deleted files, select a contact option, and be sure to tell them you permanently deleted files in Google Drive.

I have a Google Photos album where I have already added a descriptive text into the Info field of each photo. Now I would like to make a Photo Book out of this album, and I would like to have photo captions. Unfortunately, it seems that book captions are empty by default, even though each photo already comes with an Info text.
Question: How can the Photo Book be made to copy captions automatically from the preexisting image Info field?

Answer:

Hi Ole,

I'm sorry, there's aunfortunately no automatic way of copying the descriptions of the photos into the captions of a photo book. You may send your suggestion to the Google Photos team as explained in these instructions https://support.google.com/photos/answer/6156065

The only workaround, as you noted, is to manually copy the descriptions.

Hi Paolo, thanks for the answer, even though it's not what I wanted to hear.  I've sent a feedback as you suggested. Now I March when j tried to backup my photo in original quality . It showed storage is full but when I checked my storage (the monthly 15 GB we get ) it wasn't even near full. So what should I do.

Answer:

Hi Skand Manjul,

Can you please confirm that you are using the same email id to check the google storage?

It maybe possible that the extra storage is capture by gmail spam and trash folder or drive's bin. So just clear the junk data and check again.

Read this https://support.google.com/drive/answer/6374270#drive_space help article and follow the steps.

Hi Ale,

did you delete any photos? I recommend that you look for the photos here, signing in with all your Google accounts if you have more than one:
  • photos.google.com
  • photos.google.com/archive
  • photos.google.com/trash
  • get.google.com/albumarchive
  • drive.google.com
  • other online photo or file storage services you use (e.g. Dropbox, OneDrive, Amazon)

Finding a photo album by name is still cumbersome with Google Photos.

This applies to all use cases: Search photo albums (Web/Android/iOS), Add photos to existing album (Web/Android/iOS).

Imagine you have hundreds of photo albums. While browsing through your photos, you see some photos that you would like to add to an existing album. You end up scrolling through a mysteriously ordered list of photo album names searching for the one album in mind. This is so annoying.

Please try this yourself in a Web browser and on a mobile device to understand what I mean.

This question has been asked before in Google Photos Help Forum and Google Photos Help Center, but all discussions seem to be locked and forgotten.

To me, implementing the following two features seems to be quite easy. I'd highly appreciate if the Google Photos team would take care of this in the near future:

- Offer a possibility to easily and quickly search by album title, at all touchpoints (browse photos, add photos to album...) and on all platforms (Web/Mobile).

- Offer a possibility to sort albums by names, at all touchpoints (browse photos, add photos to album...) and on all platforms (Web/Mobile).

Answer:

I merely use the web version and use the following methods:
  • Give the albums searchable titles like 2017 Italy. As soon as you type Ita... maximum 10 albums with Italy somewhere in the title are shown. You may add a second term to refine the result.
  • To add photos to an older album you (surprisingly) can use the "Find" function of the browser (Ctrl+F).

I am in a bit of pickle. My friend and I created two different shared albums on Google photos and after realizing that, I added all his shared album photos into mine which inadvertently replaced his picture credits with mine and also added his photos to my library. Now, after realizing my mistake, I removed all my library photos from the album and allowed him to add his photos to my shared album and then I readded the pictures to the shared album creating duplicates of his photos. How do I remove the duplicates that I added? and Is there a way to revert back to my original library?

Answer:

Hi Parthpatel643

Thanks for posting to the Google Photos Forum.

Unfortunately, there is not an easy way to simply revert back to your previous Photos library once you've added those images - especially if they are spread through various days, months and years.

IF the duplicates are simply duplicated in an Album and NOT your photos stream, then you can simply delete the duplicated image from the Album. It will not remove the image from your main Photos library.

However...

If the duplicates you are referring to are in your main Photos library (ie open Photos, select Photos from the lower left menu options, and you see all the duplicated images there added from the shared library)....

...then you can try visitng this web link https://photos.google.com/search/_tra_ to see if it locates the most recently uploaded photos to see if that helps you find the duplicated images added. Then decide to delete the duplicates or not.

NOTE: download and make a backup of any suspected duplicate images before deleting anything...just in case.

Otherwise, you can decide a few suggestions
  1. Manually locate and delete the images (if just a few); or,
  2. Go to Google Drive > Use the settings option to Add Photos folder to Drive and sort by name to locate the duplicate images and delete them (individual images deleted from Drive should also delete from Photos; or,
  3. Select and archive any duplicate images  from your main Photos stream so they are removed from the main Photos view and aren't a visual distraciton; or,
  4. Simply ignore the duplicates, move on and learn from the experience.
Best wishes,

Joe

I had a photo saved on my Google Photos, it was only 12mp so didn't go over the 16mp for free unlimited storage.

I accidentally deleted it off my phone. I remember it was around 2mb in storage, I saw it in Google Photos and it now says it's 306kb in storage, I thought it'd change once I downloaded it.

I downloaded the photo to restore it but it still says it's 306kb instead of 2mb? I'm worried this will ruin the quality of the photo, or does storage size not affect the quality? I don't understand why it has reduced in size so much

Hey Sudhir,

Thanks for posting in the Google Photos Support Community.

I understand and I'm be happy to help you further. Please give the below steps a try in a sequence to help resolve the issue:
  • Check your internet connection (mobile data).
  • Close the Google Photos app and re-launch it.
  • Sign out and sign back in to Google Photos with the same Google Account.
  • Clear App data:
    • Open your device's Settings app (not the Google Settings app).
    • Touch Apps.
    • Select Google Photos in the list.
    • Touch Clear data.
  • Update the Google Photos app on your Android phone:
    • Visit the Google Play Store.
    • Open Google Photos.
    • Touch on Update.
Let me know how it goes.

Answer:

Hello Sudhir,

Thanks for writing back.

Could you please elaborate the issue or your query for me to assist you better? Were your photos backed up to Google Photos? If yes, it can be possible that the photos weren't uploaded successfully to Google Photos (cloud) and also make sure you're logged in to Google Photos with the same Google Account that you used during the backup. Photos/videos that are not synced or backed up, will still appear in Google Photos and will have this icon  (which means not synced/backed up) or some photos/videos will also show up with the two arrows in a circle mean backup is in progress.

Once the upload is complete there will be no icon on any photos/videos. Often, many of us misinterpret that they are all backed up because the photos/videos show up in Google Photos and we over see the icons on each photo/video. If the photos/videos weren't backed up they cannot be deleted from the Google Photos library nor Trash.

In case, you are uploading a large amount of data (photos/videos), please know that it might take 24-48 hours for the photos and videos to sync across all devices. Please ensure to have 'Backup & sync' enabled on the Google Photos settings while you're backing up your photos and videos. To check is the content is backed up, login in to photos.google.com to checked for your backed up photos and videos.

However, if you're sure they were backed up, I recommend you looking for your video here:
Keep me posted.

Best,
Amanda

Answer:

The pictures were on the device. They weren't backed up on the cloud.

Google Photos deleted them from the device on its own. I didn't press the delete button. It neither showed me the confirmation dialog. I am sure I didn't delete the pictures myself even mistakenly.

If pictures are deleted by Google Photos then they are put in the Bin. Only a few of the deleted photos were seen in the Bin. When I tried to restore those photos they weren't restored. Those pictures were also lost.

THIS IS A BUG IN GOOGLE PHOTOS app.

As per your suggestion I wiped the app's data. It probably means any possibility of getting them is already gone.

Answer:

Same thing has happened to me twice now in the past two weeks. For me, it's my meme collection that keeps disappearing, which isn't a huge deal, but it's frustrating that this bug exists. Anytime I create a new folder and move files from my downloads into that folder, it appears to work at first, but by the next day, all those files are mysteriously missing. They aren't in the trash, they aren't in any other folder, they are nowhere to be found on my phone's file explorer, they are just gone. My recommendation is DO NOT create your own folders on Google photos for anything that is important to you- the files will disappear.

7200 is a lot for one album (only possible because there are photos from different users - the limit for one user is 2000).  I would try to add in smaller batches.

Answer:

i have searched everywhere but i couldn't find any article stating the limits. Where i can check who has shared how many photos in that album?

Since these are our trip photos, it would be difficult for us to make smaller albums.

Is there any way where we can achieve in single album?

Answer:

"Where can I check who has shared how many photos in that album?"
I think that there is no way. The name of the owner appears on the photos, but counting is no option with 7200 photos.

"Since these are our trip photos, it would be difficult for us to make smaller albums."
My biggest album is less than 1000. Who wants to view an album with 7200 ? I would for sure make one or more smaller ones. But that's me.

Answer:

Having the same issue. I also noticed that I get the same issue when this type of complaint is more  frequent from other users. Therefore, it's not a browser or cookie issue.

My other issue as well, is that Google Photos is eating a huge chunk of my allotted GB space - even though it's on "high res" (not original). It's not from unsupported videos - I've already researched this.

I have activated the Google Photos folder in Google Drive. It should classify all the photos by year and by month. It has not worked as all pictures are randomly saved in the folder. I would like all my pictures to be classified by Google. Thanks for your help !

Answer:

For reasons unknown the subfolders for years and months do not appear in your account and you can do nothing more then creating these folders yourself and move the pictures into the right folders.
Personally I would advice to restrict to yearfolders.

The other reason maybe that seeing the absurd filenames of your pictures, that they don't have real shooting dates but fake dates related to downloading on Feb 27 etc.

I tried clicking on the black screen every place. It won't open. I downloaded my picture and still it's just a black box. On a lot of my pictures. And I'm missing a lot of private picture as well. Please help me get these pictures back.

Answer:

Go to photos.google.com on your computer browser -- are the photos there? If so, then you know they're safe.

Try going to Settings>Apps, select Google Photos, then Storage, then Clear Cache. If that doesn't help, you could also try Clear Data. If you clear data, then when you open Google Photos again, it will resync the photo database from your Google Photos in the cloud (which might take a little while).

Hope this helps,

Meanwhile, also try giving the below steps a try once again in a sequence to help resolve the issue:
  • Close the Google Photos app and re-launch it.
  • Sign out and sign back in to Google Photos with the same Google Account.
  • Clear App data:
    • Open your device's Settings app (not the Google Settings app).
    • Touch Apps.
    • Select Google Photos in the list.
    • Touch Clear data.
  • Update the Google Photos app on your Android phone:
    • Visit the Google Play Store.
    • Open Google Photos.
    • Touch on Update.
Let me know how it goes.

Best,
Amanda

Question: Backing up Videos with Backup and Sync does not work

I have Google Backup and Sync installed on a Windows 10 PC and have it set to backup folders with se…

I have Google Backup and Sync installed on a Windows 10 PC and have it set to backup folders with several hundred videos. The goal is to have the videos backed up in Google Drive and viewable in Google Photos. I have followed all the steps to make sure my Google Drive media is copied to Photos.

I did a few test with about a 50 videos and immediately noticed that some videos would not play in Drive or Photos but others would. I waited a few days to see what would happen but nothing changed. I contacted Google Support and the long nightmare of dealing with support began. After working with support for a few weeks now no videos I upload through Backup and Sync will play unless I create a share link for the video then it plays everywhere just fine.

The error I receive after uploading a video is "Whoops! There was a problem playing this video". The videos I upload are mostly MP4 with a mix of MOV and AVI. All videos play on the PC. If I download the video from Google Drive it will play on the PC.

I also tested this setup on MacOS Mojave and had the exact same issue.

My wife and I both have phones that backup to Google Photos. I already have 175 GB of videos and photos stored on Photos and the thought of moving them to another service is frustrating. Google Support offered no useful advice and I spent weeks explaining the problem and following up only to receive basic tech support suggestions like clear my cache or vague claims it was fixed only to find out it was not. I honestly can say I am shocked at the level of incompetence from a global multi-billion dollar tech leader.

Has anyone had a similar problem or have a setup similar to what I have describe actually working with Google Backup and Sync?

Answer:

Yes I have similar issue, with AVI files. I had to exclude them, then the backup carried on. I am yet to try to back them up on their own. Unfortunately I have no answers, Backup and Sync just hung on those files. We'll see what happens when I try them again after the backup has finished.

(actually I use Android and iOS devices to take photos, a Chromebook, mainly, to review and organise, and want to use any of these platforms to find them when I need to)

GP has lost the functionality of Picasa, to tag or label photos, even to the simple extent we can tag threads in Gmail. Apart from lobbying Google to bring this feature back, or leaving GP to another photo storage platform, what workarounds do people use to classify photos.  (Albums doesn't seem to fit. I need lots of tags on some photos.)

Answer:

Google Photos can't cope with keyword tags and even if they were added in Picasa before uploading, GP does not show them and can't search for them.
Just because this seems an important tool for you (and because you want to use many keywords per picture, which is a lot of work and perhaps not very clever), GP simply is not the right tool for you.
But you can download them to your computer from your browser in https://photos.google.com and then add the tags in Picasa or Exif-tool and then upload them to Microsoft OneDrive, because that is the site I aware-of that really can search for keywords (indicated like #car). And OneDrive is the basic cloud in modern Windows, so much better then anything from Google :-)
But not free of charge over 5 GB hélas.

Answer:

I'm sure I'm not the only person (or even the only postgrad-qualified information engineer) who wants to use an approach of multiple tagging; and that sees GP as an otherwise quite useful tool.

But downloading from one cloud (to my Chromebook???  - I do have MS-Windows devices I can use, but one is not in front of me right now); editing; and then uploading to a different cloud (OneDrive?  Does Google endorse this as a solution?) doesn't seem like progress to me.

(My first digital camera, from Sony, recorded photos on 3.5inch 'floppy' disks. I don't want to go back to that, either!)

Answer:

Google Photos is for the millions so they spend no energy on these few "professionals". We even asked for sorting on filenumbers since 2015: not yet there also and also that is a very basic and important option.
OneDrive is a website, so it also can be used on your Chromebook. And you can add your keywords there also, but in Picasa you can do that in batch.
However: you can't install Picasa and in Windows you have the additional feature that you can sync OneDrive with the contents of local picture folders.
So you simply are quite handicapped with a Chromebook, unless for viewing and searching.

See https://onedrive.live.com and of course you need a Microsoft account (maybe a still functional Hotmail-account) for access - like in modern Windows.

Answer:

Nevertheless Google maybe far more ahead with image-recognition then Microsoft which can make specified keywords superfluous, unless extremely detailed.
Just for example: I am not a bird-photographer at all, so they are on my pictures merely by accident. But when I type the word "birds" in the searchbox, Google does find a lot pictures with some bird on it very fast like shown a bit below. But of course: this only will work if you already have thousands of pictures there.

Answer:

John,

While Google Photos does not contain the traditional tagging functionality that many of us would like to have, there's a pretty easy and effective way to add your own tags to your pictures. This is done by adding those tags in the picture's description field. Then, later, when you enter any of those tags in the search box, the pictures that contain that tag in the description field will show up in the results.

You can enter anything you want in the description field by clicking/tapping the little "i" icon in the upper right corner to expand the sidebar on the right side, then clicking/tapping in the description section.

I use this method to add unique tags to certain pictures that the Google Photos AI wouldn't recognize or identify. It works extremely well and is pretty easy to implement.

Answer:

You are not investing in a system, but in the quality of your photocollection because captions & keywords are universal metadata according to IPTC standards since years.

Thanks for posting in the Google Photos Support Community.

Unfortunately, access to your data setting and Google Photos setting need to be performed on an unlocked device since the screenshot in in the device.
