How to recover my photos and videos from Google photo

Question: How to recover my photos and videos from Google photo

Recover photo and videos

Hello Vishu,

Thanks for posting in the Google Photos Support Community.

If you've deleted them from Google Photos and want to restore them, please know that photos/videos deleted from the Google Photos library, goes to the Trash for the next 60 days. So, in case, you deleted it by mistake you can always restore it from Trash folder within those 60 days (post deletion). But, if you don't find it in Trash, probably it must have been deleted more that 60 days ago. Unfortunately, restoring your lost/deleted photos and videos from Trash is the last resort.

Google Photos backs up only photos and videos and not contacts. Hence, you've lost cannot be recovered.

If no, please let me know.

Regards,
Amanda

I AM RECEIVING REPEATED UNSOLICITED NOTIFICATIONS TO "ORGANIZE MY PHOTOS BY FACE" ON MY PIXEL PHONE.  I DO NOT KNOW WHERE THEY ARE COMING FROM.  I DO NOT WANT TO ORGANIZE MY PHOTOS, AND I WANT THE UNSOLICITED, INTRUSIVE MESSAGES TO STOP.  HOW CAN I STOP THOSE MESSAGES?  WHY CAN'T I TALK TO SOMEONE ON THE PHONE ABOUT THIS?

Answer:

My Google photos does not come up in my app notifications list. I wanted to turn off this annoying feature as well. I get the notification multiple times every time I look in Google photos. Very irritating!

Answer:

I had the same issue. Go to ur photos on the left click settings then click Notifications. Last click Notification setting on this device. and turn it of. Worked for me.

Answer:

They need to fix this! It's maddening and the setting they say to change doesn't seem to exist! I've turned off all notifications and suggestions in the app and still it pops up (and refreshes) every few seconds when I'm using the app. 😠

Answer:

Hi all,

Please see Greg's post here with screenshot:

"First, make sure you're using the most current version of the Google Photos app. Do this by visiting the Google Play Store and looking at your available app updates.

In the Photos settings, you should see an option "Group Similar Faces" that's near the top. Tapping that will open additional options related to face grouping.

Let us know if this helped!

I want to request a feature that Google Photos app to have the ability to rename a photo on all platforms.
This does not mean offering a workaround to download rename and upload. This is a poor option to suggest. Think of a family over the holidays reminiscing of days gone by and how tedious and joy squelching this option would be. (Oh uncle Bob doesn't have enough room on his computer etc, etc)
It is a request to rename a photo within the Google Photos App user interface on all platforms.
Thank you

Until recently I was creating folder in google drive under the Google Photos folder. The photos added to these folders would then show up in Google Photos. This is now not happening - can someone please advise why this behaviour has changed and if there is a way to make it happen again.

Answer:

Hello Simon,

Thanks for posting in the Google Photos Support Community.

If you're on the Google Photos app on your Android device, here's what you can do it -
  • (Google Photos>Settings>Google Drive (Enable the option).

Let me know if you have any questions.

Best,
Amanda

Answer:

Hi Amanda,
Thanks for your comment, but this is about manually uploading photos from my Nikon camera, via my pc, to the Google Photos folder in my Google Drive. I have these organised into Year folders with Month folders sitting underneath them. Until recently, when I uploaded the photo files into Drive they would then appear in Photos as well, however, they are NOT now doing this. Therefore something has changed and I'm trying to find out what.
Thanks,
simon

Answer:

@Simon,

I think that the "Google Photos" folder in Google Drive is (and always was) only intended to show photos that are directly uploaded to Google Photos (from mobile device, the former Desktop Uploader or manually to Photos). The idea was probably that you can thus automatically make a backup of these photos on the computer (but very poorly implemented, since albums and any edits/additions done in Google Photos are lost) . To my knowledge it never worked the other way around.

Why don't you upload manually directly to Google Photos ? You can use the UPLOAD button or drag & drop to https://photos.google.com/ or directly to an album. These photos should then automatically be shown in the Google Photos folder in Drive (after a while, but it seems it is sometimes problematic). In fact the whole folder is useless since in your case the photos are already on your computer.

Answer:

Hi Mentor,
Thanks for your response.

This is not the functionality that I have been using for the past few years, as per my previous post to Amanda. The functionality that I used is that I create a folders manually underneath the Google Photos folder and then drop my Nikon jpegs into this folder. Then, they automatically appear in Photos too. Fantastic! This is now no longer happening.

But... wait.... I have recently started uploading my home video collection to Google Drive in a folder directly under "My Drive" called "Home Videos". i.e. NOT under the Google Photos folder. These ARE displayed in Google Photos!! What the heck? I have just done a test and uploaded a photo to this same folder and lo and behold, it appears in Google Photos. However, when I upload an existing photo that's already in Drive and Photos it does not get listed twice in Photos. There's obviously something funky going on with the way in which files are displayed in Photos or not. Does anyone know what???

Cheers,
Simon

Answer:

In fact you never have worked correctly, unless you did tell a wrong story to Amanda.

The Google Photos folder is an option in Drive that was automatically filled by Google with the pictures uploaded to Google Photos (manually or via some tool like Picasa). And it was Google that created the division in year and month folders - a normal user would not do that. Like Jan already tried to explain on July 18.

But there also is an option in Google Photos to show the pictures (and movies) in normal folders created on Drive by yourself (like your Homevideo-folder) on Google Photos also - but the Google Photos folder is no "normal folder" because it contains pictures that already are present on Google Photos.
So both options together can cause a lot of confusion indeed.

Until Januar there also was a second Google Photos folder on Drive, but that was a viewer only. That tab has disappeared because of the new Backup & Sync app that did replace two former apps. Maybe at that time also the functioning of your Google Photos folder was changed, but I am not aware of that because I leave it to Google to fill that folder and that still happens almost everyday.
I only know from other complaints that its normal functioning could be disturbed by wrong usage easily: then Google got angry :-)

So it always has been a sick option introduced shortly after the birth of Google Photos, but some people used the folder which automatically was filled by their smartphone pictures for saving its contents on their computer.

I would suggest to follow Jan's advice how to upload to Google Photos and then you also have the advantage that you can create albums immediately or add the an already existing album. And then you also can have album per month if you like.

Answer:

Hi Rinus,

Thanks for your comprehensive answer. I think I understand most of what you're saying but I can guarantee that there has been a change in behaviour for photos uploaded into folders underneath the Google Photos special folder. I also did use Picasa when it synced to Google Photos which was fantastic - and I must not be a normal user because I did name my folders YYYY-MM before Google started to do this..... And this was all good until recently as either Google created the folder when a new photo from a new month was uploaded from my phone, or I manually created the folder when I uploaded the first photos from a new month.

I think I will have to create folders outside the Google Photos folder and rely on Photos picking them up and showing them. I'll give that a go.

Thanks again - and toJan (Mentor) too.

Cheers,
Simon

Answer:

In My Drive the behavior of the optional Google Photos folder is not changed since its start in July 2015 shortly after the introduction of Google Photos.
But what is changed just before April 1 (no joke) is that Google disconnected Picasa from Google Photos, so if you have month folders on your computer, these will not be synced anymore and there will be no new month folder be created by Google on Google Drive, unless due to other uploads to Google Photos, like from your phone.

But for Picasa you need a workaround to get a new month-folder uploaded (but not synced).

If you are going to upload to own folders on Drive, you may need to start paying for more storage soon.

Answer:

Hello Michelle,

Thanks for stopping by the Google Photos Support Community.

Could you please elaborate the issue or your query for me to assist you better? Were your photos backed up to Google Photos? If yes, it can be possible that the photos weren't uploaded successfully to Google Photos (cloud) and also make sure you're logged in to Google Photos with the same Google Account that you used during the backup. Photos/videos that are not synced or backed up, will still appear in Google Photos and will have this icon  (which means not synced/backed up) or some photos/videos will also show up with the two arrows in a circle mean backup is in progress.

Once the upload is complete there will be no icon on any photos/videos. Often, many of us misinterpret that they are all backed up because the photos/videos show up in Google Photos and we over see the icons on each photo/video. If the photos/videos weren't backed up they cannot be deleted from the Google Photos library nor Trash.

In case, you are uploading a large amount of data (photos/videos), please know that it might take 24-48 hours for the photos and videos to sync across all devices. Please ensure to have 'Backup & sync' enabled on the Google Photos settings while you're backing up your photos and videos. To check is the content is backed up, login in to photos.google.com to checked for your backed up photos and videos.

However, if you're sure they were backed up, I recommend you looking for your video here:
Meanwhile, also try giving the below steps a try once again in a sequence to help resolve the issue:
  • Close the Google Photos app and re-launch it.
  • Sign out and sign back in to Google Photos with the same Google Account.
  • Clear App data:
    • Open your device's Settings app (not the Google Settings app).
    • Touch Apps.
    • Select Google Photos in the list.
    • Touch Clear data.
  • Update the Google Photos app on your Android phone:
    • Visit the Google Play Store.
    • Open Google Photos.
    • Touch on Update.
Let me know how it goes.

Best,
Amanda

My wife has shared her library with me. I turned on the auto save feature to save pictures of our daughter to my library. Will these pictures take up storage space? For the pictures I take, I have the unlimited storage set, so pictures I take don't take up space.

Answer:

Hi David,

Thanks for posting in the Google Photos Support Community.

If your wife uses high-quality settings, the photos will not count against either of your storage. Having that said, original-quality files are handled differently. Depending where the files are located would determine whose quota is affected: if the root file (that has original quality) is stored on your wife's account and she adds the file to your shared album, it will only count against her Google storage quota.

Let me know if you have any questions.

I have been trying to download my partners shared photos onto my laptop, not just into my own google library which I now realise you cannot do.
In the process I accidentally added all of the photos from my partners cloud into my own. I do not want them there mixed in with my photos. I would like to either (a). Easily view just those shared photos in their own folder on my account, so that I can easily download just them. or (b). move them all back where they came from. Any help or suggestions?

Answer:

OMG. All you can do is delete them from your account, otherwise they are just mixed up with yours. I think that a serious warning is missing here. I know of 2 ways to facilitate this painful operation a bit:
  • Go to "Recently added" https://photos.google.com/search/_tra_  (you also get there via the search box > Show more) where the photos are sorted by upload date. Your partners photos should be grouped there.
  • Search with the device name with which the photos were taken (as shown in the info). Of course worke only when you use different device.

Answer:

Oh wow that's incredibly annoying. Thanks for your reply! A warning definitely seems necessary or at least a reverse button. I've tried using the recently added feature but for some reason less than a quarter show up! (I accidentally moved more than 9000 photos!!) I will try search by the device name but unfortunately I think there was multiple. Thank you for your help anyway I appreciate it!

Hi Ken,

I’m sorry, it’s not possible to recover photos permanently deleted from the Google Photos Trash. However, you may install to your Android device a deleted photo recovery app https://play.google.com/store/search?q=recover%20deleted%20photos&c=apps and run a scan for anything to recover.

In addition I recommend that you contact the Google Drive support team to see if any deleted files may be recovered. Just open the Google Drive https://support.google.com/drive/?hl=en&authuser=0#topic=14940&contact=1 contact form, click Missing or deleted files, select a contact option, and be sure to tell them you permanently deleted files in Google Drive.

Question: Partner sharing : Only limited amount of photo's are being copied in my own library

Steps to reproduce:

Steps to reproduce:

Start situation:
  • Myaccount (ACCOUNT A) is 'partnered' both ways with my girlfriends 'account'(ACCOUNT B) . The following options were applied: Saveto library: All Photo's.
  •  Myaccount and Girlfriends account are both in our Google One Family account, wehave the 2TB option
  • Together we have in [ACCOUNT A] around 4500 including photos and videos

Why Change?
  • After1 year, I came to the conclusion that shared photos are not being deleted inthe partners account. Which means ; If I delete a photo which my partner hasmade on her account and she is 'owner' it does not get deleted from heraccount. This means that in the end when we both do clean ups in our own accounts,we still have a totally different set of photo's.

Desired situation
  • Wemake an extra account (ACCOUNT C) which we both use for our Google Photo's, sothat we are working in the exact same library and no synchronization is needed.

Problem:
Hereis the problem, after deactivating the partner sharing with [ACCOUNT A] and[ACCOUNT B], so that I could make a new partner sharing with [ACCOUNT A] and [ACCOUNTC] (This is the best way to migrate photo's from one account to another) , only a part of the photo's actually get copied into the new account (I'vewaited 1 week). Expected behavior wouldbe that all photos will get copied in my library. Let's say that it did 85%,but it stopped at 2017 or something and just some random photo's it alsomissed.

  • Froma [ACCOUNT C] Point of view, I've checked the shared library from [ACCOUNT A],all the photo's which I expect are in the shared folder.
  • Mostof the photos from newest to olders until like 2017 have the little 'saved/cloud'icon. But just a couple of them in between does not?
  • There is NO enabled that says only from a certain date.

Is this known behaviour? To me this sounds like a bug.

With kind regards,
Peter van der Pol

To assist you better, could you please confirm if you've deleted the photos permanently from the trash? If yes, unfortunately, there isn't any way to recover them. If not, please check if you see the photos on trash as you can always recover photos from the Google Photos app trash.

If you have back up & sync on, photos and videos you delete will stay in your trash for 60 days. You can recover deleted items by following the below steps:
  1. On your computer, go to the trash.
  2. Place your cursor over the photo or video you want to restore, then click Done .
  3. At the top right, click Restore  . That photo or video will be restored to your Google Photos library and added back into any albums it was in.
Incase, if you're unable to restore from the Google Photos, the following things could be the reasons:
  1. Photos and Videos moved to trash more than 60 days ago.
  2. Photos and Videos moved to trash, then emptied your trash.
  3. Photos and Videos moved to trash permanently deleted from your trash.

Here's a useful help center article for more information on how to "See if you can restore deleted photos & videos".

Let me know if this helps.

Best,
Sonya

I've noticed a problem with the android app.  I have it set to upload when WiFi is available.  If I take a photo and then edit it (crop or exposure) before the upload happens (no WiFi available) then other non-edited photos are uploaded correctly when WiFi is available however the cropped photo is not.  If I then undo the edit while connected to WiFi the photo uploads.  I can then re-apply the edit and the uploaded photograph is updated correctly.  As a workaround I'm not applying any edits until the photo has been uploaded initially.  Is this a known issue?  I'm worried now that there are other photos I've edited that have not been backed up.

Answer:

Hello Mark and Sebastian,

Thanks for posting on the Google Photos Help Community.

Just to confirm, could you please let me know where exactly have you edited the photos (is it in Google Photos app or in your device gallery)? If you've tried editing the photos in Google Photos app, I'd like to let you know that there won't be a duplicate copy created for the edited photo. It will be edited for the already backed up photo.

If the photo has been edited in your device gallery and not being backed up, I'd suggest you to try the below steps:
  1. Close the Google Photos app and re-launch it.
  2. Sign out and sign back in to Google Photos with the same Google Account.
  3. Clear App data:
    • Open your device's Settings app (not the Google Settings app).
    • Touch Apps.
    • Select Google Photos in the list.
    • Touch Clear data.
  4. Update the Google Photos app on your Android phone:
    • Visit the Google Play Store.
    • Open Google Photos.
    • Touch on Update.
  5. Turn off and turn on the "Back up & Sync" option.
If the issue still persists, I'd suggest you to have a look at the help center article to fix back up & sync issues.

Let me know the progress.

Best,
Daisy

Answer:

Hi Daisy,

Here is a little more detail:  I took the photo on my Moto G5 android phone, along with some others on the same day.  Google photos was set to wait for WiFi.  (I also use Datally to lower mobile data usage.)  In the meantime I edited one photograph using the Google Photos App.  The edited photo showed up on the phone in Google Photos (not a new copy).  I then connected via WiFi.  All the photographs except the edited one uploaded to Google Photos cloud as expected.  This was confirmed by looking at the cloud using a PC. The edited photo did not appear.  The android app was reporting "all backed up" but that was not . Whilst I was connected to WiFi I removed the edits using the photos app. The picture then appeared in the cloud (viewed by the PC). Still connected to WiFi I re-applied the edits. These were reflected in the PC view of the cloud stored picture.

I do understand that if backup & sync are enabled then a modified version of the photo will NOT be created locally.

Since I was using the Google Photo App for the edits I'd rather not follow your "re-boot" steps as I did this once before and got a whole load of duplicate photos!

Is there some simple way of forcing the Google Photos App to "re-scan" and check all photographs have been backed up to the cloud?

Thanks,
Mark

Answer:

Hi Mark,

Thanks for writing back in.

I'd suggest you to check the saved location of the edited photo. If the photo is saved in the device folder which isn't set up for the back up, the photo won't be backed up and saved in the cloud. I'd recommend you to check if all the device folders are set up for back up. To do so:
  1. Open Google Photos app.
  2. Tap menu (3 vertical lines).
  3. Tap Device folders.
  4. Check where exactly the photos is saved.
  5. Go to main menu, tap Settings.
  6. Tap Back up & Sync option.
  7. Tap Back up device folders.
  8. Check if that specific folder is selected for back up.
Let me know the progress.

Best,
Daisy

Answer:

Hi Daisy,

The photo that was edited was in the normal "Camera"  device folder. This is backed up.  I did not move the picture I just removed the edit and then it uploaded correctly.

So it's something to do with the editing of a photo when WiFi is not available that causes the problem, not it's location. Other photos in the same folder uploaded when WiFi was connected.

Thanks
Mark

Answer:

Ditto.  When a photo is edited with something other than the Google Photo app and saved using the same filename, I cannot replace the original, unedited photo previously uploaded to Google Photos.  Alternatively, should I attempt to delete the original file from Google Photos first, I have to confirm yes, remove it from Google Photos and all synced devices - there is no option to delete it only from Google Photos.

Answer:

I'm also seeing this: The original image, in the default "Camera" folder, is backed up, but the edits aren't.
Edited in Google Photo. Phone: Nexus 6P (Almost time to upgrade!)

Answer:

I have the same problem. I use Camera Plus to edit photos sometimes and none of them backup to Google Photos! The only pics that get backed up are the originals. It's really a big problem since people only take the time to edit their best/favorite photos.

I hope this gets worked out and applied retroactively.

Answer:

Similar problem here, I have pixel 2 with stock Android 10, I allowed Google photos to clean up my already backed up photos from local storage and this is when I saw the problem.
All my photos that have been edited with Google photos app were not deleted from local storage, although the app says that all photos are backed up.
I checked online and the photos are backed up indeed, but with different file size than the one I have on my phone. Very strange.
So they fixed half of the problem, the edited photos are somehow saved online but I cannot get rid of them from local storage.

Answer:

Been testing Android, coming from an iPhone, and this is what bothers me the most, so far. On iPhone I can edit my photos any way I want in any app, my icloud backup is always synced. Seems like every android option is only uploading as soon as image is created. Google Photo do sync a bit, IF photos are edited in Googles app. But with portrait mode and blur settings only working on camera app, this is kind of a problem. Is there a workaround, besides going back to iPhone 😋 ?

Answer:

Hello everyone,

I noticed this today as well.
I went on a trip and edited pictures on my way on the flight while phone is on Airplane mode.
When I landed and come home, I still cannot see these pictures online on my PC. However, I see them on my phone.

Also, when I connect my phone to PC and view pictures to see where they are saved, then are in the camera folder with original pictures.
Pixel 3\\Internal shared storage\\DCIM\\Camera

Edited pictures have no problem opening in the phone.

Phone: Pixel 3
Android: 10
Pictures are edited on Photo's app, not third party app.

Question: I viewed a picture someone sent. How can I change it so they can't see I viewed it?

I'm unsure how to change it

How was this picture sent? If it was a link to an album in Google Photos, they won't know you've seen it unless you select to "join" the album. You can choose to leave the album at any time, but the album owner gets notices whenever someone joins or leaves the album.

I am in a large shared album. I wanted to share some photos, so uploaded them to the album. Now I am receiving non-stop notifications on my phone. What are my options to stop these notifications?

There is no option within the android photos app to turn off notifications for a viewed photo. It seems like I only have these options:
1. block the app notifications completely
2. leave the album

Option 1 means I now can't get any notifications from when people view, comment, etc on smaller albums with close friends. Option 2 means I have to join/leave any time I want to add new photos. Neither of these are preferable. We really need an option to mute notifications on specific albums. Facebook allows muting notifications for groups, events, etc. Google could certainly learn from this.

Hi Reid,

Welcome to the Google Photos Product Help Forum.

Go to the 3 dot menu in the album which you want to share, then "Sharing Options" and either "Invite people" or "COPY LINK" and email it to them.

Please ignore the other post, they are not Google Customer Support, and if they try so hard to pretend they are you have to wonder why.

Answer:

Hi Melissa,

>>> I don't have the sharing option under the 3 dots?? Please help....

Are you using an iPhone (or iPad)?
Is your Google Photos app up-to-date?
Are you sure you are inside the album when clicking the 3 dot menu?

I just checked, and "Share" is the second selection under the 3 dot menu within an album.

I realize where certain functions are buried in the menus ;-)

This is a relatively old thread on a fairly specific issue, anybody else, please create a "New" post or it will be buried in the noise.

Question: Plz recover my recent delet photos and video

My private personal screen recording 3 videos and 15 photos plzz fast recovery my data

Hi Shubham,

if the deleted photos and videos are still in the Google Photos Trash you might be able to restore them as explained in these instructions https://support.google.com/photos/answer/6128867?co=GENIE.Platform%3DAndroid&oco=1

Otherwise it’s not possible to recover photos permanently deleted from the Trash.

Hi,

If you have Backed Up your Photos & Videos in the Google Photos app,you can easily restore them by viewing them Online. But if you have deleted them without Backup, see if  they're present in the Bin Section. If not there,I don't think it's easy to recover them now.

Or else use some Data Recovery tool to help yourself.

Sorry for the Loss.

Hello Ragini,

I have a google photos back up on my google account.  I want to add my daughters photos on her pixel to my account. I can do this by adding my account to her phone in google photos and then setting that as the back up.  However as soon as I do this it syncs all my account stuff on her phone until I set it not to sync.  By then it has already copied all my contacts to her phone.   The only practical way to remove all my contacts is to delete my account, which removes it from Google photos of course.  Can I put my account in for her photos but stop it automatically syncing the contacts?

Answer:

Hi Stuart,

If you go to the main Android settings (gear icon) Accounts and tap your email then Account sync and disable everything you should be good to go.

Answer:

I removed the sync on everything and all the contacts are still there. That seems to stop anything new going in but not what's already come in before you can unset the sync (which is all the contacts as that's almost instant.
Thanks though.
