I am trying to save all my photos to google photos using Backup and Sync (total 30k or so). Since I have been using iPhones for about 8 years now, all my images from my phone camera are saved as filename format IMG_XXXX.JPG. So I have 3-4 files with the same filename but are completely different images taken at different time, have different file size. I observe that google photos will save the first image with a filename: for example IMG_0100 but skip the other images with the same filename.

Has this been the experience of others?

Is there is a workaround of change in settings that will solve this issue?

It would be impractical to rename tens of thousands of images.

Please help and advise.

I tested by manually uploading photos with the same file name in the web app on a computer, and Photos happily accepted both photos. I think that Google Photos stores them in folders by "Date taken" so that there is no conflict.

Google Photos is already private because it is secured with your Google Account credentials. It shouldn't be a case where some one else has the access to your Google Photos and Google Account, until you haven't shared your login credentials with anyone.

I'd recommend changing your Google Account password to secure your account. To access your backed up photos log on to photos.google.com on your desktop computer (web) or Google Photos app on any other compatible device.

If a photo/s is deleted from Google Photos, it would go to Trash/Bin for the next 60 days (after deletion). Unfortunately, if the photos aren't found in Trash or deleted from Trash, I'm afraid, you might not find them else where to recover them because Trash is the last resort to retrieve your lost/deleted photos.

I was also surprised that someone got into my private Google account from Indonesia without me receiving any notification. When I checked what happened I found out the person loged in via a device which I lost many years ago (Samsung S4). Which at that noment I tried to erase from the list of devices connected woth my account but it wasn't possible as the device was inactive. I changed my password and was able to recover part of the pictures from the bin but the other part was deleted permanently also from the bin. I really want my pictures back. Hi Akhazzam,

Unfortunately there is not a way to automatically filter the photo view of images already uploaded.

If you go to Photos > left menu > device folders and turn off backup and sync for each folder that you don't want to show, then, moving forward those images won't show in the view. However, the images in the folders then won't backup and sync automatically either, so you'll have to decide which is important: not seeing images in main photo view, or backing up and syncing those specific folders.

Alternately you can keep backup and sync turned on for everything, and manually archive any images you don't want to see in the main site. Get the best of both worlds. Full backup, but filtered view.

This makes for a really poor customer experience and you guys should really work to fix this. After doing a factory reset on my Pixel 4 XL, I can't even filter pictures I've taken by using the Camera tab anymore - it now only displays pictures I've taken on this phone since the reset.

I feel you. I have the exactly same problem and I need to search and review every photo, one by one, to find the ones I need taken by the Camera. It was so simple to implement a upload system based on tags, folder's name and recognizes the photos taken from camera, which you can find on DCIM folder, and separate them from the ones downloaded from other Apps (which have their own folders names). That's a great mistake, because I have used Microsoft OneDrive (since SkyDrive) for about 10 years and nothing like these happened before. If Google needs hire someone (doubt that, since Google has the best engineers on the planet) to implement that feature I would love to work on that, really.

I did all of the above and it still didn't work. I cleared out my trash bin and when deleting photos it still says trash is full and says it will only permanently delete....

Under my app settings I have the options to "Clear Cache" (which I did for the app) and "Clear Storage". I didn't clear the storage in fear that I would lose my current photos. Since mine is backed up to my gmail can I clear storage will no worries?

Hi, apologies for the gibberish. I couldn't see what I was typing on the help form somehow, but had to type something to get my question posted.

My Google photos app is taking up more than 1gb on my phone and I can't find a way to reduce the space required. Online I saw some users can find a setting to limit the cache size but my app is the latest version and I think it got removed. I only use Google photos to back up my photos so I really don't need the cache to be so huge.

Could you please elaborate the issue or your query for me to assist you better? If you've deleted them from Google Photos and want to restore them, please know that photos/videos deleted from the Google Photos library, goes to the Trash for the next 60 days. So, in case, you deleted it by mistake you can always restore it from Trash folder within those 60 days (post deletion). But, if you don't find it in Trash, probably it must have been deleted more that 60 days ago. Unfortunately, restoring your lost/deleted photos and videos from Trash is the last resort.

If no, please let me know. Also confirm the device you're using

I"m trying to upload (via chrome browser) a small batch of images from the same camera - half of them upload successfully, but a few of them get the 'can't upload item' message. They are standard JPG images from a sony camera - have tried using safari but makes no difference. I'm using high quality (so no storage issues) Any ideas how to get around this issue/bug - thanks!

No logical explanation, but Sony-cameras are famous because of producing incompatible movie-files.

So that maybe a reason.

Furtheron the popular dragging method may cause problems: always use the UPLOAD button and select the right folder and the right files within that folder.

I always upload by dragging selected photos (no complete folders) into an album, and exceptionally some photos are skipped for no reason. Till now the upload always succeeded at the second attempt.

I think (and hope) that it is a temporary issue. I would also try with smaller batches and upload to an album, so that it is more easy to check what happens. When you upload the same photo twice it should not upload again, but is still added to the album if it is not not already there.

Yup! Once I had this problem too!

But, I've cleared my browsing data and things like that and reinstalled Chrome. It fixed me those issues.

I suggest this method, but I think you'd better sync your all bookmarks and data before you uninstall and reinstall, it will save a lot of time after reinstallation!

Just cleaning-up via the menu (3 dots right-up, then something like More adds) maybe good enough.

But many install extensions like Adblocker which is not needed at all in Chrome - or some game.

And Safari can be totally overloaded by having too many tabs open.

Besides: Apple hates Google :-)

So there can be many reasons for abnormal browser behavior, apart from type of files etc.

But Google seldom is "out of duty" for a full day.

I'm having the same problem, except with a jpg I took with a Samsung Galaxy S9+ before editing in Photoshop.

For the past several years, I've had no problems editing photos and uploading them to Google Photos, but suddenly it won't work for any of the jpgs I've edited.

Any advice is appreciated. Very frustrating.

If you are syncing your photos from your phone to Google Photos, you should see a Google Photos folder in Google Drive. You can then use the Google Drive Desktop app (go to drive.google.com then click on the gear icon to download it) and that will copy your photos from your account to your local PC.

However when I delete the photo in Google Drive it does not delete in Google Photos. To make sure, I also removed the photo forever in the Trash of Google Drive and still it is not deleted in Google Photos.

The behavior you are seeing is correct. If you have connected a Google Drive folder to Google Photos, if you delete a photo in the folder, it won't delete it in Photos. The assumption here is to keep a backup copy of the photos safe online. You would have to manually delete the photo in Google Photos if you want to really delete it.

Thank you so much for your reply. That makes sense to me. However, the official help in Google Photos seems to say that if one deletes in Google Drive, then it will delete in Google Photos (below).

Could you enlighten me?

If you delete a photo from Google Drive, it'll also get deleted from Google Photos.
- But if you add that photo to an album in Google Photos, it won't be deleted from those albums.
If you delete from the Google Photos folder in My Drive:
- If you delete individual photos or videos, they will be removed from Google Photos.
- If you delete folders (including the Google Photos folder), photos and videos won't be deleted in Google Photos. This is to avoid deleting all your photos and videos by accident.
- If you move photos from the Google Photos folder to a different folder and delete them from there, they'll also be deleted in Google Photos.
