Question: Google photos doesn't remember edits to photos stored in sd card

I recently got a Moto X4. I put an SD card in and had the default camera (Moto's) store images shot to it. Google photos found that folder and I set it to back it up. All good so far. Now when I edit a photo the edits are saved and photos shows me the edited version for a while, but it inevitably defaults back to showing the image as it was taken, "forgetting" the edits.

If I go to the Google Photos website, the image appears as edited in the browser, but as the unedited version on my phone in Google photos app. If I click on the edit button in the app, it will show me the edited version. But if I leave without making any changes and saving, it reverts to the original image as taken. If I try to share a photo where the edits have been forgotten, it shares the original, unedited photo.

I have tried deleting cache and data for Google photos app and it shows the correct edited version for a bit, but eventually (within an hour or two) reverts to original versions of of the photos.

Any thoughts? Thanks!

Answer:

Hi Patrick,

Thanks for reaching out to the Google Photos Help Community.

I certainly understand your concern as  you're experiencing issues while saving an edited copy of original photos on your device. For this, please try these steps on your device:
  1. Sign out and sign back in to Google Photos with the same Google Account.
  2. Clear App data and cache:
    • Open your device's Settings app (not the Google Settings app).
    • Touch Apps.
    • Select Google Photos in the list.
    • Touch Clear data and cache
  3. Update the Google Photos app on your Android phone:
    • Visit the Google Play Store.
    • Open Google Photos.
    • Touch on Update.
  4. Restart your device.
If possible, try sharing the edited photos from a different device to see if that helps.

Keep me posted.

Best,
Nadia

Answer:

Thanks!  Unfortunately, I've tried all those things to no effect.  I don't have another device to try it on (other than a desktop, which works normally.

As an update.  I added PhotosEditor as a device folder to back up.  It does save the edited file now, but does so in addition to the original file, so every image that I have edited appears twice in my Google Photos gallery.

Answer:

This happens to me too when editing photos that are saved on my sdcard, very annoying. Will buy a phone with more internal storage next time as Google Photos is not good with handling sdcards.

Answer:

@PeteranDi, I don't see the option to format as internal storage.  When I go to settings>storage>click on portable storage SD card.  It takes my to the file browser.  I can click on the three vertical dots in the upper left and choose storage settings>format but the only option is to format as portable storage.

How do you get the option to format as internal?  Thanks!

Answer:

I don't think so.  When I go to storage it shows it as portable.  If I then click on that and go to the options to format, it only gives me the option as portable.

Answer:

I have the same problem, the google just doesnt save videos, I've tried to edit a bit, my primary storage Is SD card and there Is a lot of space, please dont advice me to format it!

Answer:

I've tried to save it like hundred times, nothing happened, it must be some bug, this Is what I get everytime, I save it

Answer:

Unfortunately, I've had this same issue for quite some time too. I spent 2 hrs last night cropping and adjusting pics using Google Photo's excellent photo editor only to see this morning, once again, my edits are gone and back to the original pics. It's as if my phone sync'd the original pics and over-wrote the edited version.  This has been going on for a LOOOOOONG time and time for Google Engineers to tackle it.  Samsung Note8 with mSD card.

Answer:

I too have noticed this effect on my 1 week old Moto G7 Plus. Some of my early photos appear with a label to "Fix the lighting" . When the photos were on the internal memory I could do the fix and see an edited image in the library. Unawares I moved all my photos to an SD card and now the larger edited version is saved in the new "PhotosEditor " folder on the phone. The unedited version is still on the SD card but without the "Fix the lighting" message but there is a warning message that tells me the edited version will not be saved in my library. I cannot use the workaround because my phone does not allow the SD card to be formatted as internal memory for some reason. The result is that it is a waste of time to edit any photos which are on the SD card and so I am being forced to move my photos back to the phone and keep each one there until I am sure that I have finished editing it! That cannot be acceptable.

Answer:

It's been even worse for me.
I edit a photo online, in Google Photos.  Save it.  Then go to share it with others, by navigating to Google Photos.  It appears to others as the unedited photo.  Google Photos still displays it in the edited form.

How confusing is that?  What is the point of it?  How does this benefit the user?  How the heck are we supposed to know it?  It's a folder with our pictures in it.  We edited it.  It should be edited, unless we somehow and for whatever reason decide we want to retain the original.  Period.

Answer:

I made the mistake of deleting the unedited originals thinking that'll purge the unwanted images, but it actually loses everything. Very alarming and annoying.

The photo app on my Samsung Galaxy s8 no longer has a button to tick to say when to upload pictures. All it has is one that says to upload when roaming. That is silly because you would be using your data. I have talked to Samsung they say it is not them. I have tried to talk to Google and there is no support for the Photos app. Just this forum which I have asked before. Any advice?  Sometimes it takes days to upload one photo.

You can choose to enable Cellular Data back up, but there's no way to schedule specific times to upload or not upload when on wi-fi.

Backup & Sync (BUS) for desktop has been buggy when used to backup images to Google Photos. You might try unlinking BUS from your Google Account, then uninstalling BUS, then rebooting your computer, then reinstalling BUS, then re-associating it with your Google Account. Then reset the BUS preferences to monitor that same folders you originally selected. The wait: although it may look like the backup is starting all over again, it isn't; instead the Google servers are just comparing its already backed up images to the folders you're monitoring to see which images remain to be backed up (if any).

According to the Drive Storage page, I'm currently using 19GB of storage across Drive, Gmail and Photos. I have 1TB of free storage that will expire in a week leaving me with a 17GB limit. I have a Nexus 5X phone and 8GB of my storage space is in Photos, but I believe most of those photos were taken with my Nexus phone and uploaded via the Photos app, and I thought those photos did not apply toward my storage limit. Can you confirm that photos uploaded from the Photos app on my Nexus phone will not count against my usage? Also, is there any way to determine how much of the usage shown for Photos on the drive storage page will actually apply to my 17GB limit?

Answer:

Hi,

Thanks for posting in the Google Photos community.

Photos from Nexus devices will count against your Drive quota if you upload them in Original Quality.  Only the Pixel phones have the ability to upload in Original and not count against your quota.

To recover the space, you can use the Google Photos site to Recover Storage. This is found off the menu>settings option.  This will convert your photos from Original to High Quality, a compressed version of your photos.  This is a great option as it is lossless on photos less than 16MP in size, which the Nexus lineup natively shot (8MP or 12MP depending on the phone).  This will get your Drive quota back usually within 24 hours.

Hope this helps.

Clinton

You've accidentally posted your Gmail question in the Google Photos forum.

You can visit Gmail help here https://support.google.com/mail/answer/7401?hl=en&co=GENIE.Platform%3DAndroid&oco=1 to find the answer to your question.

Spoiler alert: you cannot delete all messages at once in the Android Gmail app as you can on the Web version of Gmail.  (However, on Android you can simply tap the picture or letter icon to the left of the sender, and go down the line selecting multiple emails and then delete. Not as quick as web.)

So, I've got all my images and videos backed up to Google Photos, just in case anything goes wrong and I need to restore them.

Is there any way or anything in the works to be able to restore multiple photos? As if anything happens I have thousands and don't want to have to download them all one by one.

I've also noticed that if I take a Screenshot or save a photo from Facebook and delete it on my device, if I go to restore it from Google Photos it will save in my gallery with the date I restored it, rather than the actual date, yet the date in Google Photos stays the same/correct. The same happens with my videos.

Is there any way to fix this?

Answer:

Hi Rachel,

>> Is there any way or anything in the works to be able to restore multiple photos? As if anything happens I have thousands and don't want to have to download them all one by one.

You can use Google Takeout to download all the photos/videos. Once you downloaded it, you can move those photos/videos into your mobile.

Download using Google Takeout:
  1. On your computer, go to https://takeout.google.com.
  2. Uncheck all products except Google Photos and click on "Next step" button.
  3. Verify and change the setting of archive file, if you want. Then click on "Create archive" button.
  4. After a while, you will get the email with the download link.
>> if I go to restore it from Google Photos it will save in my gallery with the date I restored it, rather than the actual date, yet the date in Google Photos stays the same/correct. The same happens with my videos.

It is maybe your mobile device's problem. Are you facing the same problem in other devices too?

Answer:

There's no way to download multiple images in the app. On the website you can select and download multiple images at a time or to download all of them (or more than a few hundred) you can use Google Takeout as Barry described.

As for the Facebook images, screenshots, and videos, these original files didn't have any data in the "date taken" EXIF field (videos don't have that field). Google recognizes the date based on when it was uploaded so it knows this, but when you re-download the image the date it was "created" on the device is all it knows.

Answer:

Thank you,

Is there any backups available that will allow me to save the mentioned pictures/videos while preserving the original date? Or will this always be an issue?

Hello James,

Welcome to the Google Photos Support Community.

If you've deleted them from Google Photos and want to restore them, please know that photos/videos deleted from the Google Photos library, goes to the Trash for the next 60 days. So, in case, you deleted it by mistake you can always restore it from Trash folder within those 60 days (post deletion). But, if you don't find it in Trash, probably it must have been deleted more that 60 days ago. Unfortunately, restoring your lost/deleted photos and videos from Trash is the last resort.

If no, please let me know.

I have many pictures of my 2 month old but she's not grouped and not in any face group. New pictures to of others get added to existing names or new faces, but not my baby. She does not show in my iPad, android phone or web browser.

Answer:

Hello Anthony,

Thanks for posting in the Google Photos Support Community.

You can group the faces manually. You can just click in the face of a person and "tag" it. Here's a help article to know more about labeling your face group.

Have you tagged/labelled her photo in the 'People' section of Google Photos? If no, here's how you can do it:

To apply label manually:
  • At the top of a person's face group, click "Who's this?"
  • Enter a name or nickname. Now you'll be able to search with that label using the search box.
Note: Only you will see the private face labels you choose, even if you share those photos.

To change or remove label:
  • At the top right of someone's face group, click More , then Edit name label or Remove name label.
Know what 'remove results' option is for:

If you see a photo that's in the wrong group, you can take it out.
  1. Open the group you want to remove something from.
  2. Select the photo you want to remove.
  3. At the top right, click More , then Remove results.
Meanwhile, Please try uninstalling and reinstalling the Google Photos app on your iOS device to check is this sorts the issue. Also, could you try toggling the switch off & then on for face grouping in Google Photos
  • Go to Google Photos appSettings > Group similar facesFace grouping.
Note: This will not delete the photo or video from your Google Photos library. Here's a help article for your reference to know more about face grouping and adding a label. Facial recognition feature isn't restricted to region specific. Here's a help article to more on how to use it.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Regards,
Amanda

Answer:

Anthony,
There is nothing you can do about it. It sometimes takes more time.
Of course you can start a "normal" album.

Answer:

Manual tagging is being rolled out. I checked on a computer:
  • On some recent photos I see in the info panel "n faces available to add" with an Edit icon next to it (pencil). Also on photos with already tagged faces I now see the Edit icon.
  • Clicking the Edit icon allows to select one of the recognized faces, and add it to or remove it from a group. You can also create a new group for a face (+ icon)
  • To add a face to a group you must find it in the long list of faces, which seems very laborious unless you concentrate on a few specific persons: then the faces do appears on top under "Recent".
Note that I only tested this rapidly (it's new), and only in the web app.

You find the help here: https://support.google.com/photos/answer/6128838 under "Advanced tips" >  "Remove, add, or change people & pet labels to your photos".

Answer:

Sorry, but this doesn't answer my question. If the Pixel 2 is the best MP camera I've had, and it's 12.2MP, and video is 1080P, is there any reason to use Original Quality?

Answer:

David Crandon,

Original Quality option is only for the backup which is in Google Photos and not for the original photos/videos which is in your device.

Your photos/videos will be compressed in Google Photos, if you didn't choose "Original Quality" option.

Even photos less than 16 MP may have some compression done to them if you upload at high quality (though it wouldn't be a noticable difference)

I was wondering, will there be updates to supported cameras for Backup and Sync? It has been nice to see my raw files uploaded even at 16mp JPEGs, since it makes it easy to show people some of the photos I've taken. The current list is fairly old, and with new cameras coming out, I hope that the update for new cameras will come sooner  rather than later!

we unfortunately don't know whether or when new RAW image formats may be supported as this is a user-to-user forum and Google doesn't share its product plans or roadmap. I suggest that you send your feedback to the Google Photos team and tell them what formats you're interested in, here's how to do it https://support.google.com/photos/answer/6156065

Answer:

It makes no sense to "sync" RAWs to Photos unless you see Photos as your single backup and then you should start to pay for more storage because a backup only can be called a backup if your files don't loose their original quality.
But if you don't want to pay, your raws will get converted and compressed to 2 MB jpegs at Google (if downloaded), while uploading 20 MB files - so that is a totally sick approach.

So: store your originals originals on disc (fast and reliable) and upload neatly edited jpg's to Photos - also these will get compressed but will stay High Quality and perfectly usable for all normal applications.

From that point of view, you never need to wait on new raw-codecs from Google because they have been very lazy with updating since many years without any understandable reason.

Answer:

I'm not syncing for backup, it's just a nice and easy way to show people what I've been shooting, that's all! Having the thing read RAWs means I don't have to store the JPEGs on my drives too; it's mostly for neatness than storage issues.

You're right about the updating, it seems to be 2-3 years out of date.

On 7/7/2018, my best friend got married and I took the wedding photos with my Google Pixel 2 XL which is a 2 month old phone (no one else took pix but me).  I took HDR Enhanced "Portrait" mode pictures from 3 PM until 6:00 PM.  At 6:15 I scrolled through the pictures,  happy with a lot of the beautiful shots, and chose 3 to go ahead and post to FB.  I drove home from the church and when I looked at my phone at home, all the wedding photos were GONE, even the ones I had posted to FB (of course they are still on FB in FB quality)!  Only the 2 videos I recorded of the vows remained!  I searched my Google photos on the cloud.  Found 3 photos in the trash (its possible these were just ones I deleted during the wedding however how did these get to the cloud trash and not the other 500ish photos not make it?)...  So I hooked my phone up to my laptop, and under the DCIM\\Camera folder, I was able to see 500ish folders named with the current date/timestamps of the wedding.  *When you take "Portrait" mode pictures, the original image is stored along with the enhanced photo (filters applied and softened background).  Anyway, the folders dated 20180707 were all there but there were no images in any of the folders.  All day on 7/8/2018, I googled the problem, downloaded a few free photo restore apps which did recover 2 of the hundreds of photos I took.  I even paid $40 for FotoLab's Data Recovery software (which seems to only recover data/images that were purposefully deleted and not disappearing images) and installed DigDeep, FX Explorer Plus.   Let me be clear, my phone never died, rebooted or anything.   I did not accidently delete them.   I simply connected to my wi-fi home network automatically as I always do, and the images DISAPPEARED!  I assume this occurred during the auto-sync when I connected to wi-fi???  Today I called Verizon tech support.  Spent 30 minutes on a mobile screen share with the tech who had me reboot my phone, resync to Google, checked all around my Google drive and phone.  Had me install a few apps to view files on my phone.  Finally he connected me to Google Pixel support.  I spent 95 minutes on the phone with Google support and them consulting with "product support" at times. No avail.  But while I was screen sharing with the Google tech, the 3 wedding photos from 7/7 that we saw in the trash, he had me "restore".  After restoring them, they were GONE!  No longer in the trash, and no longer in the Albums, main photos, nor on the phone!!  So while I did have 3 wedding photos, now I have none.  When I ask where the restored photo went, he just says "it should go back to your photos/albums" even though he saw it did NOT do that.  And the only other suggestion the Google tech has is that he suggests I post here for some answers by photo experts since this is "the first he's ever heard of this problem".  I did install a 4th app called "Disk Digger" which I had hope when it located the 584 wedding photos during the "basic" scan, but they are super grainy and come to find out only from thumbnails.  When researching more about Disk Digger it says in order to recover non-thumbnail versions of images you must first root your device in order to use the "advanced" search.  Yet I am told that in order to root my device, it does a factory reset/wipes the data out so data recovery is "impossible".   So after literally 16 hours of troubleshooting and $40 later, I'm back at square one with no wedding photos.  I am considering moving out of the country and/or getting rid of all electronics and moving to cave and writing my friend letter and mailing it with the post office to let her know all her wedding photos mysteriously disappeared :(
Any help anyone might be able to provide would be much appreciated.
*PS I did delete nomedia files and rebuilt the media index per a recommendation on the Google Photo community forum.  No luck there either.  I'm beyond devastated right now.

If yes, it can be possible that the photos weren't uploaded successfully to Google Photos (cloud) and also make sure you're logged in to Google Photos with the same Google Account that you used during the backup. Photos/videos that are not synced or backed up, will still appear in Google Photos and will have this icon  (which means not synced/backed up) or some photos/videos will also show up with the two arrows in a circle mean backup is in progress.

Once the upload is complete there will be no icon on any photos/videos. Often, many of us misinterpret that they are all backed up because the photos/videos show up in Google Photos and we over see the icons on each photo/video. If the photos/videos weren't backed up they cannot be deleted from the Google Photos library nor Trash.

In case, you are uploading a large amount of data (photos/videos), please know that it might take 24-48 hours for the photos and videos to sync across all devices. Please ensure to have 'Backup & sync' enabled on the Google Photos settings while you're backing up your photos and videos. To check is the content is backed up, login in to photos.google.com to checked for your backed up photos and videos.

However, if you're sure they were backed up, I recommend you looking for your video here:
If a photo/s is deleted from Google Photos, it would go to Trash/Bin for the next 60 days (after deletion). Unfortunately, if the photos aren't found in Trash or deleted from Trash, I'm afraid, you might not find them else where to recover them because Trash is the last resort to retrieve your lost/deleted photos.

Meanwhile, also try giving the below steps a try once again in a sequence to help resolve the issue:
  • Close the Google Photos app and re-launch it.
  • Sign out and sign back in to Google Photos with the same Google Account.
  • Clear App data:
    • Open your device's Settings app (not the Google Settings app).
    • Touch Apps.
    • Select Google Photos in the list.
    • Touch Clear data.
  • Update the Google Photos app on your Android phone:
    • Visit the Google Play Store.
    • Open Google Photos.
    • Touch on Update.
Let me know how it goes.

Best,
Amanda

Google Photos does not have the ability to splice/slice videos currently.  I would recommend using the Send Feedback feature to send this as a feature request to the Photos team.

I want to just view all photos at once like in apples photo app (all photos). However google photos is automatically creating subfolders by month/year. How do I get rid of the subfolders and instead see the photos clustered all together?

Answer:

Hi,

Thanks for posting in the Google Photos community.

I'm not 100% clear on your question.  If you are using the Google Photos iOS app, you can view all your photos at once in the Photos tab of the app itself.  You can also pinch to shrink down views like all your photos for a year like you can in the Apple Photos app.

If you are referring to how Google Photos stores photos in your Google Drive, which is by year & month, there is no way to change that behavior.  This is how Photos organizes itself in Drive but isn't really intended to be the viewing source for your photos - that's the app's job.

Let me know if this doesn't answer your question.  If that's the case, can you provide some clarity on what you are wanting to see so we can try to help?

Hope this helps,

Clinton

Answer:

Hi Clinton, Thanks for looking into my question. let me clarify - I'm talking only abut the google photos app for iOS.  However much i pinch out, the photos are still being segregated by year and month I want absolutely no segregation, just like in apple photos app, there is an option of all photos where there is no segregation by year or month etc. The labeling of month and year takes up a lot of space on my iphone screen and hence i prefer to just view them all without any timelines.

Answer:

Ah, okay.  Thanks for the clarification.  This isn't how Google Photos is designed so you will always seen the year segmentation.  I'd suggest using the Send Feedback feature in the app and request the change.  Using Send Feedback gets it straight to the Photos team in Google and they can consider it for a future release.

Thanks,

Clinton

My SO created a shared album in Google Photos. For some reason, beginning yesterday, the Photos app on my phone (iPhone 8+ with iOS 11.4 and Photos app version 3.23.202381974) will not show any newly updated photos in the shared album from any contributors and it won't show any new photos I've selected to add to my albums from the shared album. I've tried disabling and re-enabling sync, restarting my phone, etc. It displays my synced photos from my device storage just fine.

Oddly enough, I can see all of the shared and saved from shared photos via a link to the shared album on my phone's Safari browser and also my laptop's browser so I know they are there in the cloud, just not appearing specifically in the app for whatever reason.

Is this a known bug / is there a fix?

Hello Kate,

Welcome to the Google Photos Support Community.

I understand how important Google Photos is for you and I'll be happy to help. This seems to be more of a network issue.

In the meantime, could you please uninstall and reinstall the Google Photos app on your iOS device and login with the same Google Account to check if this sorts the issue?

Let me know how it goes.

Question: Cocknocker

Hello Melissa,

Thanks for posting in the Google Photos Support Community.

Could you please elaborate the issue or your query for me to assist you better? If you've deleted them from Google Photos and want to restore them, please know that photos/videos deleted from the Google Photos library, goes to the Trash for the next 60 days. So, in case, you deleted it by mistake you can always restore it from Trash folder within those 60 days (post deletion). But, if you don't find it in Trash, probably it must have been deleted more that 60 days ago. Unfortunately, restoring your lost/deleted photos and videos from Trash is the last resort.

If no, please let me know. Also confirm the device you're using

Hi, i want to change a setting on Google Photos so that when i delete from my Gallery, it will also delete from Google Photos. Is this possible?

If not, how can I delete and re-download all photos from my Google photos so it will only show those in my gallery?

Answer:

Hello Jennifer,

Google Photos is designed to backup photos and allow the original gallery photos to be deleted to free up space.  For most users it is a safety measure so that their online photos remain secure. This means that deletions need to be completed in the Google Photos app if they need to be deleted from both the gallery and online.

You can only download one photo at a time by selecting the 3 dot option to Save to device while viewing the photo after having clicked on it in the photos tab.

If you want to only see the photos in your gallery, select the 3 bar menu option, then the drop-down arrow next to your email and select Remove active account.  Photos will then act as a gallery viewer to see all the photos on your device. If I haven't understood correctly, please let me know,

Regards,
Peter

If I select all photos in Google Photos and delete them from Google Photos (but not my phone gallery), then will Photos re-download only the ones in my gallery?

Answer:

If you tap the 3 bar menu; email address; and Remove active account then go to https://photos.google.com/. and delete the online photos then empty https://photos.google.com/trash

When you now sign in to the Android app with Backup & sync enabled it will backup your gallery photos, double check upload size when signing in.

But sometimes I'm not sure what person in the photo was indetified for some group. If there is more pesrons in the photo, I'm not sure who is the one for the group.

And also in the photo "Info" bar, I can see just who is in the photo but I cannot see where exactly in the photo the person is.

Only way I can see exact person is to change feature photo to see exact face in the photo. But this is very hard to use for big amount of photos.
