Duplicates
Hello Brenda,
Thanks for posting in the Google Photos Support Community.
Google Photos has identical duplicate detection, where if you have uploaded photos to Google Photos already, it will not re-upload the same photo (each photo file has a unique "Hash" that allows us to determine this).
Hence, Google Photos avoids uploading duplicates, when different upload methods or devices are used, as long as the photos aren't edited. There is no easy way to remove duplicates, but some of the following may help:
- You can delete duplicates manually, for example in https://photos.google.com/ where they should be next to each other.
- The problem is however which one to delete:
- one photo may be edited, the other not,
- one photo may be in an album, the other not.
- When the upload dates are different (for example when you uploaded long ago via Picasa, and now again using the Desktop uploader). It may be easier to delete the duplicates in https://photos.google.com/search/_tra_ where they are sorted by upload date.
- There are more ways to get a useful search result, for example the device from which they are uploaded.
- See https://sites.google.com/site/picasaresources/Home/Picasa-FAQ/google-photos-1/how-to/how-to-search-for-photos
- Since very recently it is possible to delete photos directly from an album. Go to "More options" (3-dots icon), and use "Move to trash"
- When you uploaded in the free "High Quality" and have your photos in albums, it may be wiser to simply ignore the duplicates in the library.
Unfortunately, a feature to sort and delete duplicates of photos with Google Photos that are already backed up doesn't exist. You may have to manually select the duplicates and delete them.
If you're referring to the Google Storage Quota, Could you please click this link and check which Google Product is consuming more storage quota and share your results?
If you're Google Storage (cloud) is full, then it might be possible that you've uploaded/backed up your photos on "Original" setting as this will actually consume storage space or quota on Drive Storage when compared to the photos uploaded/backed up in "High Quality" which has no limit on storage.
Also, please note that drive storage segregated to other Google products such as Google Drive, Gmail and Google Photos. May be the storage space shows full, as this might be occupied by other two Google products.
Keep me posted.

Amanda

Question: How to I transfer all my photo's and file to memory card? I want to power wash my Chromebook as it
Computer buffering
You only need to copy the locally stored files to the inserted memorycard (with enough capacity) with the filemanager of your Chromebook: read the Help in the book itself how to do that.
This has nothing to do with "Backup & Sync" or with iOS (Apple-systems).
Answer:
But I maybe wrong: if your Chromebook has Android compatibility, you may have installed the Photos-app which normally is used on smartphones only.
Then you first must use the free-up space option in the app to clean-up all picturefiles which already are backupped at Google and then you safely can copy the files to memorycard and do the powerwash.
But I would ask the Chromebook forum to be sure.

Question: Phone reformatted but screenshots not restored. I can not find them anywhere
Restore from cloud
Jeff,
Good afternoon. Typically, screenshots are saved to a separate folder on your phone and that folder is not one of the ones that gets automatically backed up to Google Photos.
Did you look on the Google Photos website to make sure that all of your important images were there before you hard reset your phone? If your pictures are not visible on the website, then they have not been backed up.
So, if you did not manually turn on the automatic backup function for the screenshot folder, or if you did not manually upload each screenshot, then unfortunately there is nothing that Google or any of the volunteers in this forum can do to help you get back those images. Google can't help you restore files it never had in the first place.

~ Greg

Hello Piyush,
Welcome to the Google Photos Support Community.
If you're able to see in it the Trash, it can be possible that the photos of the same album were removed from the Photos section of Google Photos. Please confirm if you find the same same photos in the Photos section.
Note: album once deleted, cannot be recovered.

Photos seems to work on the computer. Just not on the S7 phones after the latest update. I've uninstalling all the updates reinstalling all the updates. For stopping all the apps, closing and clearing all cases. Reinstalling everything again. Nothing seems to work. If you look at the reviews for the S7 phones everybody's experience in the same problem. Please fix or give us a way to uninstall this program. It continually crashes even when it's not running or we're not trying to open it.

You don't need to remove anything, because all is private unless the few shared.
But your phone should be locked of course - that is much more important.

Answer:
Forget about that, because you will get into an endless struggle against local space.
But of course you are fixated on that idea.
- Forget about some filemanager, but install the simple Galery Go app from Google LCC (if not available, your Android maybe too old - then stop here).
- Open the app and select the Camerafolder and then select Search large files under the 3 dots: then they are sorted largest first and you see their filesize.
- Now also open the Google Photos app and be sure you have good wifi and that backup is on and that all is safe at Google. Leave the app open.
- Now back to Galery Go and select a bad file and trash it (it will get permanently deleted from your phone).
- Now back to Photos and check that the file still is shown in your library.
- If okay, you can go on with more.
Good luck
PS: a much more comfortable approach would be to copy all files on phone to computer via its usb-cable and then use the Free-up space in the app to clean phone-memory completely.
Your choice.

Answer:
Hi Patrick,
I believe that they will download, but you may not have the correct viewer on your computer. There does appear to be an HEIF Free extension by Microsoft in the Microsoft Store for Windows 10 - I have not used it yet.
Additional info at: https://www.digitaltrends.com/photography/heif-and-hevc-ios-11-macos-high-sierra/
I don't use them because if I forget and share them (as individual files via email) people on some devices and computers have issues.. So, I just use "Most compatible" format in the Camera settings.

If you delete the files in Trash, then open Trash, and restore them from there. If Trash does not have your photos, then you can not return them, they are permanently deleted without the possibility to restore it.
But you can find another way: you can find applications in the Play Store that can restore files in the Android device. Try to find and download such a program, and in this way return photos

Hi!
All files in the photos have a limit, they should not exceed 16 mgpx and 2048 size. Therefore, the algorithms of Photos are made only in accordance with the limit.
If you want a big movie in full size, then you need to find another photo and video editor, for example Snapseed, and in this way make your movies.
And movies in large amounts you better store on your YouTube channel, with limited access, to maintain privacy

A few days ago, I have deleted thousands of photos of totalling a size of around 10 GB from my Android phone, but I have realised that the photos uploaded to Google Drive are compressed, so I want to get the original, deleted photos back. Below is a screenshot indicating the button I pressed while freeing up my space in the phone (the screenshot is later taken but it is an illustration of what I have done). I have contacted the Google Drive Help team once before and they say they were not trained to deal with this problem.
The photos mean a lot to me so I don't want them compressed. I appreciate any kinds of help, thank you.

Answer:
Hi Jonathon,
Once you agree to free up space you agree for them to be deleted off your device. Unfortunately when that happens it's unlikely you'll be able to retrieve your original photos to be able to upload them again. Some people have tried using photo recovery apps (just search the play store and see if what you think). I can't recommend any as I haven't used them myself but some people do have success that way.
Hope you manage to get something sorted to get them back,
Nikki

I want to factory reset my phone and when I go to that option it says "all data will be erased from your phone, including your: Google account" my photos are backed up on Google photos. Says 32 GB have been used. If I reset my phone are my photos on Google photos going to delete?!?!
Answer:
Hello,
Once your Photos are backed up into the cloud, it will be safe from a reset. Visit photos.google.com to make sure your Photos are visible there.
You might always want to save your photos as an archive from takeout.google.com as an assurance.
let us know how it goes,

Hi Rachel,
Welcome to the Google Photos Product Help Forum!
Clicking on "Me too!" means that you have a similar question or issue.
It does not have anything to do with Harvey Weinstein.

I was able to save all past and future photos, videos, screenshots, etc. in Google Photos on my LG K10 (MS428) by going into File Manager 5.30.21 (LG factory installed app) and moving all the device folders from internal storage to SD memory. Now all the device folders in Photos show a little icon of an SD card. My phone's operating system is Android Nougat. Thanks for the help.

I know this has been asked many times and hopefully one day Google may deem is useful to provide more information. I am getting the message 'Getting ready to backup xx items left'
I have removed/re-added google photos, cleared cache and everything else that has been mentioned on previous posts. Including scrolling through literally thousands of pictures, one by one, looking for the 'cloud' icon to indicate that the item has not backup up. This has taken my hours and hours. However I am still left with 2 items that will not backup and I cannot find which items they are.
So this leaves me with the simple question.....
Why can't google at least indicate the individual items that it cannot backup?
At least then we can delete them. It must be possible, if you know the count of items that are problematic , then list them in some way.
Come on Google, give us a break and try helping in some way.
If google can't do it then is there some other app/developer that has tackled this problem?
Thanks for reading

Poonam rani Bhagat,
Following is the text from the official Google Photos Help page about deleting and restoring photos and videos:
Restore photos & videosIf you deleted an item and want it back, check your trash to see if it’s there.
- On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Photos app
.
- At the top left, tap Menu
![]()
Trash
.
- Touch and hold the photo or video you want to restore.
- At the bottom, tap Restore. The photo or video will be back:
- In your phone’s gallery app
- In your Google Photos library
- In any albums it was in
If the item is not in your trash, it may be permanently deleted. If a deleted photo or video isn't in trash, you can’t restore it. You won't be able to restore a photo if:
- You moved it to trash more than 60 days ago.
- You moved it to trash, then emptied your trash.
- You permanently deleted it from your trash.
- You permanently deleted it from your device’s Gallery app, without backing it up first.
Regards,
~ Greg
