Question: all of my photos uploaded through the app and i only want certain ones added - how do i remove/limit

turned off backup sync but they are still showing up on google photos.

Hello Morgan,

Thanks for posting in the Google Photos Support Community.

It can be possible that the photos weren't uploaded successfully to Google Photos (cloud) and also make sure you're logged in to Google Photos with the same Google Account that you used during the backup. Photos/videos that are not synced or backed up, will still appear in Google Photos and will have this icon  (which means not synced/backed up) or some photos/videos will also show up with the two arrows in a circle mean backup is in progress. Once the upload is complete there will be no icon on any photos/videos. Often, many of us misinterpret that they are all backed up because the photos/videos show up in Google Photos and we over see the icons on each photo/video.

Unfortunately, a feature to backup device folders to Google Photos on iOS isn't available currently. You may have to find a way to move your WhatsApp and Instagram photos to iPhone's of your iOS device, for which I would suggest you contacting the Apple support for assistance.

You can submit a feature suggestion to the product team through the Send Feedback option of Google Photos.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Best,
Amanda

Question: When backing up photos and videos on google photos the photos back up but not the videos

back up videos to google photos

Hello Steven,

Thanks for posting in the Google Photos Support Community.

Unable to back up videos/photos can sometimes be upsetting. I'd recommend trying the below steps to check if they resolve the issue:
  1. Open the Google Photos app on your mobile device .
  2. At the bottom, tap Assistant .
  3. Read the first card. If it says:
  • "Waiting for connection" or "Waiting for WiFi": You need to either change your settings or connect to a WiFi or mobile network. Tap the card to change your settings.
  • "Back up & sync is off": Tap "TURN ON" on the card to back up your device's photos and videos, including ones you capture in the future.
  • "A photo or video was skipped": A photo or video on your mobile device doesn't meet our upload requirements:
    • Photos can't exceed 75MB or 100 megapixels
    • Videos can't exceed 10GB
  • "Backing up photos" or "Backup complete": This means your photos and videos should be saved.
Here are a few things you can do to increase the likelihood of background syncing of your videos in Google Photos:
  • Open the app more frequently (even if just for a few seconds).
  • When you finish a session, don't force quit the app by swiping it away.
  • Plug in your phone to charge.
  • Make sure Background Refresh is enabled.
  • Make sure you're not in Low Power Mode.
Login to photos.google.com (web interface of Google Photos) to checked for your backed up photos and videos. If with the 'Back up and sync' option turned on and if you've exceed 24-48 hours of backup, try uninstalling and reinstalling the Google Photos app from your iOS device. It's possible that Google Photos is merely scanning your library across all devices, hence the number fluctuates.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Regards,
Amanda

When I press assistant at the bottom none of those options show up. Only you've got an assistant add location to your photos and other miscellaneous cards

Hi Steven,

Thanks for keeping me posted.

I'll be happy to help you further. I have replicated the same on my end and it works as intended.

If you have tried the steps above and if they didn't help, could you please try the same on a different device iOS/Android if possible, to check what happens next and to know if this is a device specific issue or account related issue.

I want to know what will be happened to all my photos and data if I want to cancel the monthly payment and return to the default of 15 Giga storage?

Answer:

It seems that your photos will not be deleted, but you will not be able to upload anymore and also for example Gmail will stop working. You better convert the photos to High Quality first by using RECOVER STORAGE in https://photos.google.com/settings. Note that this action may take some time (days or even weeks).

You should also check in https://drive.google.com/settings/storage whether storage is also used by Drive or Gmail. Click on "View details".  If so you must delete files to recover that storage.

Answer:

So are you able to still view the photos and download them to somthing eles after the you don't make a payment? What do you mean gmail will stop working?

I logged in with my Google account on new phone. All my contacts and apps are back. But all the photos are missing. I verified they were present on Google photos before I did a factory rest on my old device.

Answer:

Bushra,

Good morning. The Google Photos app is capable of displaying images that are backed up to your account, as well as those that are only saved to your phone. So, just because you can see pictures in the Google Photos app does not necessarily mean they have been backed up.

If you did a factory reset before your pictures were actually uploaded, or if your pictures were in folders on the phone that were not selected for backup, then unfortunately there is nothing that Google or any of the volunteers in this forum can do to help you get them back. Google can't help you recover files it never had in the first place.

The best thing to do before any factory reset is check the Google Photos website. If your pictures are not visible on the website, then they have not been backed up or uploaded to your account.

~ Greg

Can I sync the photo albums created within my phone on web? I can see that my albums are synced when I log in to google photos via mobile, but on web it only shows the photos in a chronological order. Can I sync the albums and view photos categorized as the same way as my phone in web as well? Or do I need to create albums on web and categorize my photos?

You need to create the albums yourself on the web. Same issue on a computer. I would say: poor design. But the Photo engineers think different: upload everything in one big pile, we do the rest.

Question: My photos from prior to the date I got my new phone are gone.

I've tried everything. Looking in trash, looking in archive, searching by place names.

Matt,

Good morning. If you got a new phone and your pictures are not in the Google Photos app, that can only be caused by a couple of things:
  1.  You are not logged into the same Google account on the new phone. Double-check your credentials and if necessary login to the correct Google account to access your existing content.

  2. The pictures from your old phone were never actually backed up to Google Photos. Just because you were able to see pictures in the Google Photos app does not mean they were uploaded to your account. The app works as a combo gallery, showing you pictures from your phone as well as any that are uploaded to your account.

So, if you deleted pictures before they were successfully uploaded, or if you factory reset your device, or did anything else that interrupted the upload process, your pictures will not be accessible on a new device.
You should try visiting the Google Photos website from a laptop or desktop computer to see if your pictures are there. If they are not visible on the website, then they were never actually uploaded. If that's the case, then unfortunately there is nothing that Google or any of the volunteers in this forum can do to help you get them back. Google can't help you recover files it never had in the first place.

Hello all,

Thanks for writing back.

@Kevin - I'm glad your issue is resolved.

@Nick - Could you please try using the Google Photos app by switching the phone to Safe Mode? In Android 4.1 or later versions, to reboot into safe mode you have to long press the power button until you get the options menu which has the following options –  Power off, Airplane mode, and Silent mode. After getting these options on your screen, long press the Power off button, you will be getting a message that prompts you to reboot your device to safe mode. By tapping the OK button, your device will reboot into safe mode, which will disable all third party applications you have installed. You can be sure that your device started in safe mode by seeing a safe mode indicator on the bottom left side corner of your device screen.

My old computer died. Now I want to download my backed up photos from GP to my new computer. I tried creating a GP folder in GD so I could download from there but while I created it, nothing had synched to it from GP a day later.  How do I get (all) my photos back please?  About 68GB.  I have about 98GB used of a 100GB account. Maybe that is clogging things up?

Answer:

The different download methods are desribed here

The syncing from Photos to Drive seems buggy, or at least unreliable. Also note that the "Google Photos" folder in Drive should only contain photos that are uploaded directly to Photos (for example from mobile devices). Photos uploaded using Backup & Sync will not be there by design.

The bottom line is that Google Photos is not very well suited as backup in case of disaster. I recommend to make at least one local backup, and consider Photos as "backup of last resort".

Question: Space in google photo not freeing up, even after deleted photos and videos.

Downloaded and deleted photos and videos from Google Photo. Stopped synching devices.

Good afternoon.

The total storage space you have for your Google account is shared between Drive, Photos, and Gmail. You can see how much storage space is being used by each of these services by clicking the Upgrade Storage link at the bottom of the lefthand sidebar menu in Google Drive.

If Photos is using up too much of your available storage, you can change your upload settings to High Quality so that any future uploads will not count against your available storage quota.

You might not see an immediate reduction in your available storage capacity after deleting pictures or videos from Google Photos. This is because those files get moved to the Photos trash bin, where they will remain for 60 days. So, even though you deleted them, they are still accessible and can be restored, therefore they may still be counting against your available storage.

If your situation is urgent and you need to free up some Google storage quicker, you can manually empty the trash bin in Photos or Drive. This will bypass the 60-day waiting period and it will permanently delete any files in the trash immediately. Be careful if you choose to do this. (We get dozens of help requests every day from people who manually emptied the trash, then decided they want their pictures back again -- even though that process requires confirmation you understand that you're about to permanently delete those items.)

So, your available storage won't change as long as there are files in the Drive and Photos trash bins. Even if you do manually empty those trash bins, it may take some time (commonly it's between 1 hour and 1 day) for Google to index your account and update the change in available storage.

Regards,
~ Greg

I am having the same issue. Deleting videos and photos for the last 2 weeks and my storage has not changed one bit in my Google Photos. I am thinking this is a scam too for us to be forced to buy storage. How do we get direct help and not have to post to a forum???

This is an often signaled issue: available storage is updated late. You can contact the Google Drive Help team: see "Contact us" at the bottom of https://support.google.com/drive#topic=14940. There are reports that they gave temporary additional storage.

The following seems to work better, and has the advantage that the photos stay available:
  1. Download the photos to a computer if you want to keep the uncompressed originals. It is a good idea anyway (I think it's a must) to have a backup of your photos.
  2. Use "Recover storage" on https://photos.google.com/settings . That will compress all photos and videos to the free "High Quality\

    Answer:

Storage usage goes up after deleting photos?
I tried deleting videos from photos, then going to photos trash and permanently deleting them, fully expecting to see storage freed up. To my surprise, my total storage actually went up roughly the amount I expected to see it do down.

After further investigation, I realized that the videos I had deleted from photos were still present in my drive due to the auto photos to drive sync that Google stopped in July 2019. In my case that meant that the videos which were taking up 0 storage in photos, presumably because I might have uploaded them from a Google device e.g., pixel or chromebook, and which were also synced to drive (assuming there was just one copy and both drive and photos pointed to it), now were not getting the 0 storage but were actually taking up storage, which is why my storage usage went up instead of down.

So how my experience relate to this thread?  Well, assuming that others on this thread are using Original storage for photos, which counts against total Google storage, and that you had uploaded these photos before July 2019, then it is quite likely that your photos are also synced to your drive. If this applies then follow the steps below to free up storage by deleting photos content.

    1. Delete Photos content (Remember which content was deleted)
    2. Go to Photos Trash, select all content deleted in step 1 and permanently delete
    3. Go to My Drive -> Google Photos folder (which has a copy of all your pre-July 2019 photos), and find and delete all the content you deleted in step 1.
    4. Go to Drive Trash and Permanently delete all the content you deleted in step 3

You should now see a reduction in storage used in Drive.

After I had my old photos digitized, I uploaded them to Google photos.  I found that they were not showing up in the correct (chronological) order.  I deleted all of the photos from Google Photos.  I then used special software to give each picture a timestamp making it chronologically sequential.  Then I tried uploading the pictures to Google Photos again.  Each time I do this, Google Photos uploads them in the original, non-chronological order, as if it remembers them from previously, and shows the date of the original upload (not showing the new timestamp which they were given from the software I used).   Is there anyway to get these photos to upload chronologically?  Or, if not, is there anyway to re-arrange the order of the pictures in a Google Photos album after they are already uploaded.  It is relevant to know that when I have uploaded timestamped albums which were never uploaded to Google Photos previously, they are displayed in Google Photos in the correct chronological order. So, I know this timestamping works....I just can't get it to work with photos that I uploaded originally before going through the timestamping process.

    Answer:

    Ugly.
Most likely Google attached different varying timezones due to whatever artificial stupidity.
If you open the first picture in that problematic album and then open its infopanel, you can edit date & time & timezones like shown below:

Choose you own timezone for wintertime, but then the hours also will change by some hours, so these must set back to original (your timestamps) even if the timezone of the original locations are different.
One-by-one hélas. but first check if I am right about varying timezones.
    Good luck.

    Answer:

I think that you can also set the timezone in batch:
    1. Select photos
    2. 3-dots > Edit date & time
    3. Select "shift dates and times" and shift minimal amount (say 1 minute)
You can change back later if you want.
    4. Change timezone
Anyone knows a better way ?

    Answer:

I don't think that is possible in this casus Jan, because the order is random and a batch shift in the timezone will cause random changes in the hours, so the result will still be random.

    @Donna Patkin
"I then used special software to give each picture a timestamp making it chronologically sequential."

That's what I did using IrfanView as described in this link

Like you I thought that this would sort the photos in that order, but that not the case because
    • I edited the date/time of some (not all) photos in Picasa3, to get them in the order I want.
    • By doing so the Time Zone GMT+00 was added
    • The other photos (taken with a camera without GPS) got the timezone of the upload region GMT+02
    • As a result the photos for which the time was changed in Picasa were shifted 2 hours in Google Photos.
As a solution I now shift the time of ALL photos uploaded to an album by 1 minute in Picasa to get them all in the same timezone.  Of course this is only one example why it may go wrong and one solution. I could also use another program to change date/time to avoid the issue.

    Answer:

    Thank you for your replies!

If we are bringing these pictures in already sorted by timezone, and varying the times so that the order is as we want it, do you have any idea why google photos reverts them to the unsorted order?  For most albums that we do this for, it works beautifully...it only seems to be a problem with the albums that we had uploaded originally as unsorted and then realized the problem...and then found a way to sort for future albums.  I would think that once we used the software to sort the dates/times, we'd be able to upload them in the newly sorted order.

Rinus:  I see that the timezone is wrong in that album.  Some pictures show Bangladesh, others show India (from where the scanning service we used is located...ScanCafe).  I'm not sure I understand how changing the timezone on the pictures in this album would help with the order of the pictures.

Janvb:  I'm not seeing the option to "shift dates and times" in order to change the timezones in bulk...where do I go to get to that?

    Thanks to both of you!

    Answer:

Because you did edit date & times to get a chronological order, the timezone should be identical for all - else that order will get disturbed.
Choose a logical timezone - not necessary a realistic one.

    Answer:

    @Donna Patkin

You should know that digital photo files have plural date and Google Photos gets the date from among them in accordance with the rule. Other respondents (Expert) have proposed changing the time stamp on Google Photos without to explain the cause, but instead of following the method easily, you would be good to consider carefully which to change the data after understanding the mechanism.

The digital photo files have plural date as follow.
    1) Date & Time original image was created (shooting date)
    2) Date & Time it was Digitized
    3) Date & Time it was Saved
    4) Date & Time it was Modifid

#1 is shooting date gave by camera and will be recorded in Exif information, and normally #2 & #3 also will become the same date if you take a picture with smart phone for example. #1 will be recorded also in the metadata (XMP/IPTC)
    # 3 & # 4 are so-called Timestamp and digital files other than photos also have that.

First, Google Photos get the date of #1shooting date from Exif or metadata to use it for the sort in the cloud. If the file does not have Exif or metadata itself, Google Photos get the date of #4 from Timestamp.

This time, when you used special software to give each picture a timestamp, I guess the picture could have kept the Date & Time it was Digitized in its metadata, so that Google Photos shows the date of the original upload as if it remembers previous date. (not showing the new timestamp which they were given from the software I used).
If old photos you had digitized is created from the picture taken by film camera, it has no Exif, but could have metadata depending on the software you used.

The timestamp will be changed easily by moving or copy a file on the local device, but a date in Exif or metadata will not if without software. If you want to manage only with timestamps, you can clean up the metadata, but if you want a fixed shooting date inside file no matter what device you move to, it is better to add and edit Exif or metadata.

"I'm not seeing the option to "shift dates and times" in order to change the timezones in bulk...where do I go to get to that?"
You have to really click "Shift dates & times" to see the option. I am not sure that you have to shift date time really, or can only set another time zone. No time to test now. Let us know if you find out.

    Answer:

In addition to Jan and goodmorning from here.

You have to select all pictures in the album first and then choose Edit date & time under the 3 dots.
Then you will find the shift-option.
If the shift is done, you should choose Edit album under the 3 dots and then choose oldest first under the up-and-down arrows right-up.
    Good luck.

    Answer:

Be careful how you do the upload, if your photos have been edited, or came from some other device, which gave them a different modified date from the date taken. In some circumstances, Photos in the cloud will use the modified date as the date taken, even though the file has a date taken timestamp. See here for more info about how to workaround.

I'm trying to recover some storage in Google Photos, my current backup setting is to upload everything in Original quality. I'm aware of the "Recover storage" option that converts ALL of your previously uploaded photos to High quality but I'm looking for a way to select only certain photos to be converted to High quality instead of ALL. I don't want ALL of my pictures and videos to become High quality, only the ones I select.

    Answer:

If you are able to select these specific images on photos.google.com, you can download them to computer as a zip package (restrict to bunches of about 500) to save their quality before pressing the Recover storage button.
So I would say: forget about.

PS: perhaps you can restrict to the HD movies, because these are downgraded the much more then pictures.

    Answer:

Unfortunately "Recover storage" is all or nothing, thus I agree with Rinus: if you do not want to pay for more storage you should keep your originals elsewhere. That is not a bad idea anyway: having your photos ONLY on Google Photos is asking for trouble. See here.

I have tried to search for an answer on the web with no luck. What I am trying to do is to delete the photos I don't want a "cloud" backup in Google Photos but keeping that same photo in my device. Apparently if you are backing up a folder on your device, as soon as you delete the picture from Photos it gets also deleted from the device which to me seems weird. Any help I would be grateful

    Hello Carmine,

Thanks for posting in the Google Photos Support Community.

    I'll be happy to help.

    Remove photos and videos:
    1. On your computer, go to photos.google.com.
    2. Place your cursor over items you want to move to trash. At the top left, click Select . You can alsoselect multiple items.
    3. At the top right, click Trash .
    4. To permanently delete photos and videos, click Menu Trash select the photo or video  Trash

Photos and videos you delete are also removed from:Photos and videos you delete are not automatically removed from:
    • Blogger
    • YouTube
    • Gmail
    • Google+
Here's a help article to know more about deleting photos and videos in Google Photos. You would need to download all the content (photos and videos) to another storage device (like a phone, memory stick or SD card) from Google Photos, then delete them. Having done that, you can now move or transfer your photos back to Google Photos of the same account.

    Hi Amanda

Thanks for your answer but I believe it doesn't really answer my question.

First of all my query is about Android and not a computer; second of all your answer is a bit of a contraditcion:

Photos and videos you delete are also removed from:
      • photos.google.com and any synced devices
Please also note that when you do what you suggested me to do (select and then trash) a warning message tells you:
Remove from Google Account, synced devices and places where it's shared?
    I'll repeat my question:

Is there any way for any of us using Google Photos to delete a picture but to keep the picture on the device it was originally uploaded from?

    Thanks

I am based in the UK and have created a Photo book in Google Photos and now want to checkout / pay for the item. I have the correct delivery address including the postcode listed, but I keep getting an error message that the post code is not in the correct format despite using the support function on royal mail ('i' button) to double check. Further to this, the delivery choices are not being displayed due to this error message making it impossible to pay for the item and receive the delivery in due time (These are our wedding photos I am looking to get ready for my grandparents in another country so time is running out).

Additional things I have done is to tidy up my GPay address so it shows only the payment and delivery address as one address.

I have refreshed the screen severally.

I have also used the safari and Google Chrome browsers - both present the same issue I have with paying for the photo book.

    Question: Need my photos recovered

Tried disk digger not really helpful

    Hello Kristen,

Welcome to the Google Photos Support Community.

If you've deleted them from Google Photos and want to restore them, please know that photos/videos deleted from the Google Photos library, goes to the Trash for the next 60 days. So, in case, you deleted it by mistake you can always restore it from Trash folder within those 60 days (post deletion). But, if you don't find it in Trash, probably it must have been deleted more that 60 days ago. Unfortunately, restoring your lost/deleted photos and videos from Trash is the last resort.

If no, please let me know. Also confirm the device you're using

    Hello Sania,

Thanks for posting in the Google Photos Support Community.

If the photos were backed up to your Google Photos account, you wouldn't require the same phone to check your backed up photos. You can simply access your Google Photos on any device with the same Google account on the Google Photos app or you can simply log on to photos.google.com to check for your backed up photos and to delete them.

Photos started recognize faces after the date I have enable option group similar faces and no before that date.
I was living in Europe and now i moved in NY for summer for 2 months and when i connected to wifi to my uncles house, the group similar facea option came up. I enabled it, but Google Photos started finding new faces and still it finds but only after that date i had enabled it. There is faces that exist multiple time on older photos, but neither are recognized neither i can manually tag then.
     what can I do ?

    Thanks

    Answer:

    Hello Vaggos,

Thanks for posting in the Google Photos Support Community.

I'll be happy to help you.

    To change or remove label:
    • At the top right of someone's face group, click More , then Edit name label or Remove name label.
    To apply label manually:
    • At the top of a person's face group, click "Who's this?"
    • Enter a name or nickname. Now you'll be able to search with that label using the search box.
Note: Only you will see the private face labels you choose, even if you share those photos.

Know what 'remove results' option is for:

If you see a photo that's in the wrong group, you can take it out.
    1. Open the group you want to remove something from.
    2. Select the photo you want to remove.
    3. At the top right, click More , then Remove results.
Meanwhile, Please try uninstalling and reinstalling the Google Photos app on your iOS device to check is this sorts the issue. Also, could you try toggling the switch off & then on for face grouping in Google Photos
    • Go to Google Photos appSettings > Group similar facesFace grouping.
Note: This will not delete the photo or video from your Google Photos library. Here's a help article for your reference to know more about face grouping and adding a label. Facial recognition feature isn't restricted to region specific. Here's a help article to more on how to use it.

If yes, give the below steps a try to help resolve the issue:
    • Close the Google Photos app and re-launch it.
    • Sign out and sign back in to Google Photos with the same Google Account.
    • Clear App data:
      • Open your device's Settings app (not the Google Settings app).
      • Touch Apps.
      • Select Google Photos in the list.
      • Touch Clear data.
    • Update the Google Photos app on your Android phone:
      • Visit the Google Play Store.
      • Open Google Photos.
      • Touch on Update.
Let me know how it goes.

    Best,
    Amanda

    Answer:

    I have the same problem.

It analysed all photos from a date, but also some specific photos from before that date.

    But I noticed something weird:
I had an album with photos took before that date, and none face is detected. BUT I rotated a video, that created another video with a new creation date, and the album was moved to that new date. Then I noticed it detected faces from those photos. But then I removed the rotated video because the album was not placed right in the timeline, and the recognised faces desapeared. 🤷🏽‍♂️

I think that this is a bug and all photos should be analysed.
