if the photos are not in the Sharing screen of the Google Photos app or here https://photos.google.com/sharing on the Google Photos website I recommend that you ask the person who shared them with you to share the photos again.

Hello vani, depending on how you delete the photo.
If you delete it by tapping the delete button in Google Photos, it would go to your Trash both on your phone and in the cloud.
If you tap the 3 dots and tap "Delete from device", only the local phone copy would be deleted, but the cloud copy would remain.

Hi, I have an issue. Is there a way to prevent this such that I do not have to manually edit info of individual photos post upload?
Answer:
That happens when the original data of these pictures were ruined by the way they got handled before uploading to Google Photos .
If they did not come straight from your correctly set digital camera or smartphone camera, they most likely were downloaded from asocial media.
Or scanned historic prints & slides.
Please come back to explain.
Answer:
You should know that digital photo files have plural date and Google Photos gets the date from among them in accordance with the rule.
You can correct the sort on Google Photos by using an option but it means only to change the timestamps on the cloud, not to change the metadata having shooting date recorded in your files.
The digital photo files have plural date as follow.
1) Date & Time original image was created (shooting date)
2) Date & Time it was Digitized
3) Date & Time it was Saved
4) Date & Time it was Modifid
#1 is shooting date gave by camera and will be recorded in Exif information as metadata, and normally #2 & #3 also will become the same date if you take a picture with smart phone for example.
# 3 & # 4 are so-called Timestamp and digital files other than photos also have that.
When you take a picture with digital camera or smart phone, a camera app creates the EXIF (Exchangeable image file format), which can add and save information (metadata) related to shooting conditions together image data shot with a digital camera.
As Rinus explained, the photo file downloaded from a social media might not have EXIF (metadata) with shooting date, depending on the source media. Also, the photo file made from scanning printed picture might not have metadata too, depending on the software you used.
First, Google Photos try to get the date of #1 shooting date from Exif or metadata to use it for the sort in the cloud. If the file does not have Exif or metadata itself, Google Photos get the date of #4 from Timestamp.
You should check which date your files have among #1-#4.
The timestamp will be changed easily by moving or copy a file on the local device, but a date in Exif or metadata will not if without software. If you want a fixed shooting date inside file no matter what device you move to, it is better to add and edit Exif or metadata.
Answer:
Hi, thank you so much for explaining!
So it is correct to say that Google Photos is changing the dates of the photos to "Today" because it does not have any of the four categories of dates listed above? If so, this is rather strange because the Google Photos application does recognise the original dates of the photos that are stored on the device. However, the original dates change upon being uploaded to the cloud or backed up.
If so, is there any way to find out which of the 4 dates is missing? Clicking "info" on each individual photograph only shows me a specific date without telling me which type of date it is. Also, is there a way to edit the metadata of date and time of the photo so that Google Photos will recognise it even after it is uploaded or backed up?
Answer:
Google Photos does not recognise the original date if that date is stripped by an application like Whatsapp. It only recognise the date when that file was downloaded into the WA-folder and that can be near to the original date, even on the same day, but maybe an hour later.
But when uploaded to Google on the web (photos.google.com) to day, you will see the date of today.
You can edit dates in the webversion if you open the infopanel like shown below:

The original filenumber often contains the original date & time like 20191026_102233(444). But that number also is ruined by Whatsapp merely, the date-part (20191026) maybe left.
But it will be a hopeless task to reconstruct the approximate original date&time ruined by these terrible popular garbage.
I leave further discussion to BC now.

You might have misunderstood a few what I explained.
All general digital files always have timestamps (#3 & #4 in my example) in order to be managed on O/S of computer or phone, and a digital Photo file often has shooting date/digitized date in addition timestamps.
So, Google Photos (web) always can get a date from among them according to the rule, then use it as a timestamp to sort them in the library.
Google Photos application on your phone recognizes the timestamp of the files that are stored on the device. When you take a picture with phone camera, a picture will be stored on the device storage as soon as shooting, it means "shooting date=stored date (timestamp)". So, user can see shooting date, but actually Google Photos app has got the date from timestamp.
However, if you copied a picture from another device to your phone, Google Photos app might show copied date, and user can't see the shooting date. This issue has been posted to community sometimes.
▼ is there any way to find out which of the 4 dates is missing?
Even if you check the date by Google Photos app on your phone, you cannot certainly confirm which type of date it is.
At least, you can grasp the timestamp easily. You can confirm the timestamp by using a general file manager app, but about metadata, you need an app.
There are many kinds of software to edit the metadata of the date and time of the photo if you use a computer, but it needs to choose from among a few kinds of app if you use a mobile phone.
There is always a reason for the date that photos uploaded to Google Photos are showing. First, if you check the timestamp and it matches the date on the cloud, the file has probably not metadata.
And we are not yet sure that how did you get that picture.
As Rinus explained, You can edit dates in the web version, but it means only to change the timestamps on the cloud, not to change the metadata having shooting date recorded in your files. It only can keep correctly the timestamp while the photos is existing on the web.

Your complaint is totally unclear, but most likely your phone-camera (on iPhone probably) is set to the very compressed format called heic instead of the normal (compatible) jpg-format and ebay is too oldmodish to understand that modern file type.
But I am out here, so I leave further discussions to other volunteers.
In mean time you can explain more clearly what your are doing precisely.

Hi Jennifer,
Thanks for reaching out to the Google Photos Help Community.
I certainly understand the importance of photos and albums. Please know that, Google Photos does not delete photos/albums from a device without any human intervention.
Could you please confirm, if you've used the Free up space on your device option on your account? If yes, then this option uses Google Photos to delete backed-up photos from your device to save space.
If that's not the case, please confirm, if you've manually deleted photos from Google Photos. If yes, photos and videos you delete on Google Photos are also removed from:
- photos.google.com and any synced devices
- Google Photos albums
- Google Photos movies when you edit them. Learn more about deleted photos in movies.
- Google Drive, for photos and videos that are synced with Google Drive. Learn how Google Drive works with Google Photos.

Windows 10 PC. Started syncing my photos, but soon realized GP ignored my directory structure and only went by image date. This sucks, because I have tens of thousands of old slides I scanned in years after the pics were taken, but were carefully stored by year on the computer. I paused the sync, and used a utility to change the image dates on all my pics, then resumed the sync. It eventually finished, but said it could not sync about 3000 pics. I said retry - a few more synced. Repeat. Suddenly to my horror I noticed it was DOWNLOADING some of the pics. I checked, and many of my originals are now replaced with MUCH smaller originals (4MB jpg is now 250K, etc) . I am using the High Quality option. I have "Sync only these folders" selected, and the directories with my pictures is NOT included in the list. The dates on the jpgs are unchanged - and it seems to have only affected random images throughout all my directories. I really have no way of getting a list of which ones were affected - all I can do check individually and compare to my Mozy backup one at a time - obviously not practical for 40K pictures. What is going on? How do I keep it from happening in the future? How do I get my old pictures back????

Answer:
Thanks for the reply. I'm not sure what my settings were on the first aborted attempt, but afterwards I changed them to pretty much match what you showed in your example, except I had "back up all files and folders" selected instead of "back up photos and videos". The main directory is almost exclusively photos and videos anyway, but I have now made that change. I also just now selected "original quality" as most of my images are far below the 16mb limit. If I run out of space I'll set back to HQ - sound good?
Answer:
Hi Chuck, no problem with a rambling post, but I have printed it and will take it step by step.
Answer:
Hello again Chuck, I think I have an idea why your files were overwritten. When you paused and used a utility to change the image dates you may have created effectively a new file so that when you resumed the backup and merged with the photos already uploaded the compressed images were downloaded. I would have expected the unmodified image to be renamed filename (1) to create two images rather than overwrite the original, but that is something I can't reproduce. Do you have any filename (1) images on your PC, and which utility did you use so I can try to reproduce.
Answer:
That report is a new one for me, but it could mean that the photos in the list are in GP trash at https://photos.google.com/trash so need to be restored. It might be worth pausing Mozy while you get things straight. If they are in trash, restoring might clear that report.

Hello vani, I don't believe she can restore your WhatsApp backup unless she has access to your SIM to be able to activate WhatsApp on your number.
FB Messages and Tweets don't backup to your Google account, so she wouldn't be able to access those unless you use the same password on those accounts, then she would be able to login to those accounts.
She would also be able to reset passwords on those accounts if you're using this Gmail account with those other accounts.
Basically, she would be able to access anything on your Google account including emails, photos, drive, etc...

Answer:
Hi Chuck, sorry this wasn't picked up sooner. It sounds like you don't have the correct preferences set up as 'Sync only these folders' is part of Backup and Sync dedicated to syncing files down to your computer and does not have the capability to apply HQ to photos.
HQ is in the My Computer section which is dedicated to backing up your photos.
If you have the option to Create a Google Photos folder and Automatically put your Google Photos in a folder in My Drive then you might need to look at the options in the following post in the Drive forum:- https://tinyurl.com/ybkgdrp3
I will be happy to expand on any of those areas,
Regards,
Peter

However I still three very major concerns: 1) the images that have already been replaced with low-quality ones. Are they lost forever :-( Many of them went from, say, about 5MB to about 400Kb, and there are obvious artifacts and other differences between original and new. 2) It still says it "can't sync about 2200 files - retry?" Every time I retry it seems to sync a few more, but I wonder, is it replacing originals with low res ones as it does? and finally 3) With my current settings, can I sleep soundly knowing that my originals are safe? For example, if I go online to google photos and delete/edit a photo, I don't want those changes updated on my original on my computer.
Just as a sanity check - I think it works like this: in you sample image on the left you have the Google Drive Xd out, saying "separate settings". I think that is separate - that folders under there are syncing back and fort with the cloud. The top item, "My computer" is the part that the google photos is concerned with. correct?
Sorry for the long, rambling post - thanks for your help.
Answer:
Hi Chuck, no problem with a rambling post, but I have printed it and will take it step by step.
The first thing I need to know is what the reason for skipping is, you should get a report with the reason stated.
Second, I have never known the HQ compression cause cause artefacts, I use HQ exclusively and have never been able to tell the difference. However, I always have Original backed up locally either on a USB pen drive, or remotely on OneDrive or Dropbox. There have been reports of originals being overwritten and if that has happened there is no method of recovery. I need to ask again about whether yo have a Google Photos folder in My Drive at https://drive.google.com/drive/my-drive as this could be the cause of Skipping if you have previously uploaded the photos to Google Photos
Apologies if I miss you as I am in GMT and it is getting late.

Starting again is an option, in preferences disconnect My Pictures, change to "Delete everywhere" then delete My Pictures at https://drive.google.com/drive/computers then empty both Drive an Google Photos trash.
Pixels per inch is not relevant for photos, it's a scanner parameter which dictates the X pixels by Y pixels size during the scanning process.

Hi Steven,
I'm really sorry for your videos but there's likely not much to do as the factory reset process is designed precisely to remove any traces of the files on a device. You may try bringing the device to a professional data recovery service in your area to see whether there's anything they can do.
Did you store the videos also in Google Photos?

Therefore I recommend that you advise the person to add the photos from the shared album to their photo library by clicking the Add to library icon looking like a cloud with a downward-pointing arrow. Then you will be able to delete the album and the other person will still have the photos in their library.

I used the share button in the app to share a photo with a friend. I checked that it only had his name in the share to field. An hour later I received a comment from a stranger on that photo. my friend had not shared the photo. How could they have found it? Or been able to see it? I stopped sharing the photo and deleted it after that, but are my other photos similarly visible?
Answer:
Google Photos basically is private, but a shared album can be misused by someone who has almost the same gmail-adres as your friend.
In fact that hardly possible indeed, but your friend should change his or her Google password immediately.
That's all I can say about this mysterious event.
No Google here.

Willy,
Good morning. Typically, this occurs when you share an album using the "Create Link" function (rather than specifically choosing contacts who also use Google Photos and who have the Photos icon next to their profile picture), and then at some point that link is forwarded or somehow shared with another person.
If you want to share an album with someone who doesn't have a Google account, the only way to do that is to share a link to your album. If you're using the Photos app on your phone or tablet and you share via SMS or email, that link is automatically created. Anyone who gets that link can then view your shared album.
So, the best way right now is to share with people who have the Google Photos icon
beside/overlaid on their profile picture when the sharing screen pops up. However, obviously not everybody uses Gmail/Google Photos, and that's why the link method exists. Sharing an album via link is clearly less desirable, but it's the only way to share for non-Google contacts.
You can read more about this on the official Google Photos Help page here:
Look specifically at the section "What happens when you share"...

Kishna,
Turn off the partner sharing feature, if you haven't done that already.
Next, go to your account settings (https://myaccount.google.com) and click on the Security option, then scroll down to Your Devices. Remove any devices that are not yours.
You should also change your password and consider activating the two-step verification option.
Finally, you should consider contacting local authorities if you are being blackmailed and if you feel unsafe. Blackmail is a crime.

When we conducted a closed beta testing for Keep Solid Sign recently, one of the goals was to understand the main criterias SMB owners from US use to choose a solution or switch to another one.
We interviewed more than 230 businesses and what's interesting, while the top factor goes to Security&data privacy, price or for example, digital signature availability is not in Top-3 of choices. Speed of an app/solution and multi platform availability (works in web browser as well as on Mac, iPhone/iPad, Android and Windows devices) are what values higher.

Answer:
Jenny,
Good afternoon. If you want to save pictures you received in the IMO app to Google Photos, you'll have to download them to your phone first.
Once they're downloaded, open the sidebar menu on the left side of the Google Photos app and tap Device Folders. Look through the folder thumbnails for "Downloads" or an IMO-created folder (I'm not sure whether the app puts downloaded pictures into its own folder or into the main Downloads folder).
When you find the pictures, select them and tap the 3-dot menu icon in the upper right corner and choose the option to upload/backup.
Let me know if you have more questions about this.

Hello Blanka,
Thanks for posting in the Google Photos support Community.
It can be possible that the photos weren't uploaded successfully to Google Photos (cloud) and also make sure you're logged in to Google Photos with the same Google Account that you used during the backup. Photos/videos that are not synced or backed up, will still appear in Google Photos and will have this icon
(which means not synced/backed up) or some photos/videos will also show up with the two arrows in a circle mean backup is in progress.
Once the upload is complete there will be no icon on any photos/videos. Often, many of us misinterpret that they are all backed up because the photos/videos show up in Google Photos and we over see the icons on each photo/video. If the photos/videos weren't backed up they cannot be deleted from the Google Photos library nor Trash.
In case, you are uploading a large amount of data (photos/videos), please know that it might take 24-48 hours for the photos and videos to sync across all devices. Please ensure to have 'Backup & sync' enabled on the Google Photos settings while you're backing up your photos and videos. To check is the content is backed up, login in to photos.google.com to checked for your backed up photos and videos.
However, if you're sure they were backed up, I recommend you looking for your video here:
- photos.google.com.
- photos.google.com/trash.
- picasaweb.google.com.
- drive.google.com (under Google Photos).
If a photo/s is deleted from Google Photos, it would go to Trash/Bin for the next 60 days (after deletion). Unfortunately, if the photos aren't found in Trash or deleted from Trash, I'm afraid, you might not find them else where to recover them because Trash is the last resort to retrieve your lost/deleted photos.
Meanwhile, also try giving the below steps a try once again in a sequence to help resolve the issue:
- Close the Google Photos app and re-launch it.
- Sign out and sign back in to Google Photos with the same Google Account.
- Clear App data:
- Open your device's Settings app (not the Google Settings app).
- Touch Apps.
- Select Google Photos in the list.
- Touch Clear data.
- Update the Google Photos app on your Android phone:
- Visit the Google Play Store.
- Open Google Photos.
- Touch on Update.
Let me know how it goes.
Best,
Amanda

Answer:
Hi Bilal,
this is unfortunately the way Google Photos was designed and it can't be changed. If you would like to see more thumbnails, as a workaround you may zoom out the page by simultaneously pressing the Ctrl and - (minus sign) keys on your keyboard.
In addition I recommend that you send your suggestions and feedback to the Google Photos team https://support.google.com/photos/answer/6156065?hl=en
