I have already backed up and synced all my photos and videos on my laptop to Google Photos using their desktop software. I'm wondering: if I delete my 42GB photo library from my laptop, to free up storage space, will that also delete them all from my Photos account? Can I safely delete them all? Thanks for any help.

The sharing feature is confusing and absurd so I want to disable it from the app completely. The top row of the share icon menu takes up too much space for anyone who decided not to use sharing.

Sharing feature has 2 problems.
It's really confusing as to how the sharing link gets sent. Via SMS? Email? A notification on the other end? What if the recipient is an IOS user? Do they have to use the browser to see the photo I send? HOW DOES IT WORK?! If SMS is used, why isn't there a way to check the SMS? What happens if the delivery of that SMS is unsuccessful?
Photos use Google Account storage. I do not want to use my Google Account storage to send unimportant photos I send every now and then. I just want them delivered on the recipient's device. Do photos on Google Photos expire? Do I have to manually delete the photos using some other feature?

I know there's an alternative app(Gallery Go), so this isn't a big of a deal for me. I just disabled Google Photos on my phone and I'm happy with it.
I thought Google learned its mistakes from Google Plus. I will use Google Drive if I want to share the photos there. Forcing users to put their photos on Google just to send them is I think taking it too far. MMS and messenger apps are just enough for me.

Answer:

You are full of wrong ideas.

No one is forcing you to sync your pictures to Google, but if done for safety and for ease of sharing in good quality instead of being ruíned by Whatsapp and other asocial media, your further comments are sick also. Sharing is done to e-mailadresses of chosen people by you and you also can copy the link provided into a normal mailmessage with enough words to explain that there is no danger to view.

What happens on the receiver side, is simple also. If "View album" is clicked the Google Photos site with your album is opened in their standard browser on computer or in the browser on their mobile device. Only in the case they also use the Google Photos app on mobile (phone or tablet) they will be asked once, if they want to open your pictures in the app instead of their browser.
Also on Apple-devices.

Shared albums do not expire unless you delete that album or removes the original pictures from library.
It depends on your settings if viewers can add their own pictures or type comments, but that only can be done by viewer who are using Google Photos also within their Gmail-account.

Google Photos is private unless for the selected items shared. If nothing is shared, all is private.
But if your phone or computer can be accessed by anyone in your environment, nothing is private.

The simple Galery Go viewer is good enough for people who don't want the complexities in the cloud.

That's all.

Answer:

That's not either: if accidently shared by you, the "album" can be deleted on the shared tab.
And if some "album" is shared to you, you can leave that album if the content is not valuable for you.
Just by clicking on the 3 dots right-up in thumbnail shown on https://photos.google.com/sharing
Don't block known people to prevent future problems.

Syncing is impossible, but downloading is no problem if the pictures already are in normal albums on https://photos.google.com/albums
Just open the album and choose Download all under the 3 dots right-up.
Thereafter unzip in the Downloadsfolder and move the normal folder created into your own folders.
The zip can be deleted.
Then the next album in the same way.
Good luck

Answer:

Sorry, I was misleaded by your talks about Google Photos.
But if you really have the contents you need in some folders on Drive, you can sync these folders to computer by installing the Backup & Sync app.
However: it you just have used the word "syncing" instead of downloading, you also can select a folder and choose Download in the menu. Then you also will get a zip etc.

Come back to tell what you have in mind more precisely.

My Google photos have backed-up and synced currently, however historic files from circa early 2017 which are shown on the app are not showing on the web, any suggestions ?

Answer:

Generally the web can be trusted and the app can be misleading.

Because we can't know what you may have done wrong or if there is anything special with these 2017-pictures (I would not call them historic, unless it ware scanned pictures from 1917) that may cause that they are not shown on the calendar in 2017 but on a totally different date?

What do you see if you type 2017 in the searchbox?

Answer:

@Chris Horne
"files from circa early 2017 which are shown on the app are not showing on the web"
When Rinus said that the app can be misleading, I think that he means that the app also shows photos that are on the device. When you do not see them on https://photos.google.com/ they may not be uploaded.

Answer:

No, I did not mean that, but you can be right also Jan. However Chris did not refer to Android or iOS.
But due to whatever actions the cache in the app may show old stuff not really present anymore.
So the app may need to get resetted also.

Yesterday i have taken photos from DSLR and it got automatically backed up in google photos but size is reduced like anything. 17 MB photos converted into 111 KB, that is surprising.

My Setting in Google photos at Mobile is "High Quality
My Setting in Back up and Sync application is "High Quality

Just for understanding,  I have taken picture from nikon camera, and download all the photos in my laptop folder "xyz" and i have kept "xyz" folder as backup in backup and sync application.

I thought all the photos in xyz folder will be backup in google photos will be in high quality ( atleast 16MB for DSLR images) but surprisingly it is just 111 KB.)

Answer:

Usual mistake: dwonloading from screen (Save as) instead from the 3 dots Download option.

If your Nikon has a resolution of 17 MP, HQ images always will get downsized to 16 MP which is still high. And the filesize in MB will get a factor 3 lower on avarage, but with large variations.
Their normal size will be around 6 MB, downsizing + compressing will result in 2 MB (1-3)

Hi, i was selling my ipad so i downloaded the google photos add and uploaded the images to the cloud. Now the app was saying its uploading etc and could see the progress.

now when i log back in to the app or website for photos they are not there

now i did a factory reset of the ipad, but that shouldn't have done this?

the only other thing i can think of is that i used a different google email, is there a way of finding an email address based on IP or time etc

its on an ipad so it doesnt have a telephone number

thanks

Answer:

Hi Jacqueline,

to which cloud platform did you upload the photos? Prior to resetting the iPad did you visit the photos.google.com website to check all the photos were there? I suggest that you check also iCloud, Amazon, OneDrive, or other cloud storage platforms you use.

It is certainlt possible you used a different Google account but, unless you remember any email addresses, it's unfortunately not possible to tell which one you used. You may check your mail for any of your messages coming from different addresses.

Hi,
I have been using google photos for a while now and it has always backed up and synced my photos and videos with no issues but suddendly is now says "storage usage unavailable" it doesn't say my storage is full and I have checked this as well and I have space left on both google drive and google photos but it just isn't backing up anymore.

It also doesn't actually let me watch any of my previously backed up videos (recent and from years ago) and doesn't let me restore any of my previously backed up photos. Please do help me as this is very serious, I have too many priceless memories which can't come back and I can't afford to loose.

When I sign out from the google photos and again log in then it stays at " Getting storage usage" but nothing happens.
I have android phone and over 11 GB is left in my account.

The only option you have is trying to log-in to https://get.google.com/albumarchive with that Yahoo-account.
That archive was created by Google after closing Picasaweb in 2016 and that was announced on the site.

Question: My total daily internet package is exhausting by Google photos during backup

Syed, check your setting for Cellular Data Back up.
  • It's in the Google Photos app,
  • tap the 3-line menu, then Settings
  • tap Back up & Sync
  • scroll down to Cellular data back up, make sure both are in the off position
When you say you turned off backup - is it the one on the Google Photos app, 3-line menu, Backup and Sync? That should certainly stop the automatic backup from happening until you turn it back on. Do you see the cloud with a line thru it at the top of your photo library?

There is one exception - if you add photos to albums they will be uploaded even if Backup and Sync is off. Could that be what is happening?

I would like to recover space and i understood that i can do this via the recover space button. I also understood that this will compress the pictures & videos actually backed up. BEfore doing this i just want to be sure that the pictures and videos on my device will remain the same size (i.e. will not be affected by this operation). Can you please confirm. thanks

Answer:

If you are sure that you don't mix with the Free-up space option under the 3 mall lines, you are completely right: it wll compress all at Google to High Quality which is not counted by Google for your usage at Photos.
But that will have no effect if you already have a lot at Drive and/or Gmail: see one.google.com/storage

PS: it can take a day before the button becomes gray and you may get a notice that compression is ready.

PS: always wise to copy the originals on your phone to computer regurarly because there always will come a moment that you will need to free-up space on your phone also.

I just switched over from the free version of Google Photo to Google One's premium membership for the purpose of backing up all my photos in original uncompressed format. In order to re-backup all the photos from my device in original/uncompressed format, the forums I read mentioned having to delete all existing photos that were backed up (and compressed) under my free account, and then re-sync them all with updated "original quality settings"....overwriting was not an option. When I deleted the photos from Google Photos, it also deleted everything from my Samsung S7's synced gallery!! I've tried the following steps for remediation:

1. I was able to restore deleted photos from within the Google Photos app. However, the photos still don't appear on my device's gallery. It's also not clear if the photos appearing on Google Photos are in High/compressed or Original quality. If the latter, this isn't quite as big a deal.

2. I've tried searching my phone's system Recycle Bin and other recovery apps, but nothing was able to find these photos on my device.

3. I do not see any "download" option or any way to move photos from Google Photos back to my device. I would consider this option if I had a way to verify that the photos on my account are of Original quality.

Please advise, and thanks for your help!!! I've already spent several frustrating hours on this.

Answer:

I'm sorry Oren, it looks like you have definitely deleted all your original photos from your device.

Restoring photos from within the app would only affect the online compressed copy.  You have taken any steps we would have recommended and I am 99.99% sure you only see the compressed copy online. You can check at https://photos.google.com/settings where the Recover storage option would be available if the online copies were at Original size.  Clicking on the option would give you a summary of storage used in Google Photos.

If you need to download, the outlook isn't much brighter as there is no bulk option built in to Google Photos with only an option to download one at a time to Save to device using the 3 dot option while viewing a photo.

There are workarounds, for example if I select a batch and use the share icon I get the option to copy using a file manager app.

I wish I could be more helpful, but on the bright side I am a personal believer that compressed images lose no visible quality and I have no second thoughts about using HQ for my photos,

Regards,
Peter

Answer:

I was under the impression that the Google Photos app was simply backing up the photos on my device. I just deleted a bunch of videos and photos (of my kids!) in the app in an attempt to make space, and emptied the bin when that didn't seem to have an effect. I then discovered the photos and videos had disappeared from my device too. Is there a way to recover them? Why did this happen??

Answer:

Hello Sandra, I am sorry to say that deleting from the app also deletes from all other places. The warning says Remove from Google Account and synced devices. Once deleted from the bin there is no way to recover the photos apart from file recovery apps which you can find in the app store. there is a small chance that you can restore the photos using a recover deleted photos app (Android). I haven't used them myself so have no specific recommendations. There may well be more app options if you visit the appropriate app store and try other search terms.

I've moved 20,000 photos into an album and now find that I do not have the timeline on the right available to scroll down to the year/month. This is available in Photos so how do I move these photos out of the album to Photos without having to upload them all again?
Thanks,

Answer:

@David Lang
That sounds like a weird question to me, because ALL photos in albums should also be visible in the library https://photos.google.com/, also the ones you uploaded directly into an album. In fact, albums do not contain photos, only links to photos in the library.
Did you check in https://photos.google.com/ whether the photos are there ?

Answer:

Nevertheless it is a valuable feature request that albums also get a calendar at right, so I would suggest to send a feedback from the main menu under the 3 small lines.

Albums can contain too much pictures (=references) nowadays, maybe over a large timespam.

I have used google photos as iphone photo backup solution for three years. It is great for me because even high quality fulfil  my needs. Recently, I like to restore one of the photo using  "save to device\

Answer:

Sorry this is confusing: maybe it never have been heic files 2 or 3 years agoo. Because if it has been heics, it still should be heics when downloading to device.
But as long as you don't save thousands back to your device, jpg's still have equal or better quality then heics and still are not very large files - generally about 3 times.
We can't help.
And no Google here either.

Answer:

The Original Size is 986KB HEIC (from google photos web)

The file from "save to device" is 1.8MB jpg

I guess they are quite different, not as you mentioned they are the same

Answer:

Not at all - if the real original from your 12 MP camera was a 36 MB raw-file, the jpg-compressed version will theoretically be around 3.6 MB and the heic-compressed version around 1.2 MB.
In reality it did become 1.8 MB and somewhat less then 1 MB
You should compare them on a large retina screen and then you will hardly see any difference in sharpness, but maybe some tiny colorshifts.
Not relevant unless for jurists :-)

Answer:

Since it is a Backup feature, I expect the same file return when it is restored. Not the converted file.
I think it is a common sense for anyone who do the backup and restore process.

Also, the android client of google photo  did return the HEIC file when I use "Save to device\

Answer:

I got the impression that you have used "Save to device" from the Google Photos app, because you were posting here.
But then you should complain at Apple via feedback - they have a good site for doing that.
Just fiddle around a bit for that, because we can not even improve Google.

However: I can understand the reason why they do convert to an iron world standard (eg for mailing and uploading to asocial media), because most iPhone-users are not even aware that they are shooting in heic and then they get complaints from family or friends that they can't use these files on their computer.

No further comments possible.

I want to edit videos that I took with my Pixel 3 camera in the App Google Photos. When trying to save the edited version as a copy I get the error message "Unable to save changes".

The problem appears only with videos from my Pixel 3, other videos from other sources are no problem.

I am happy to hear suggestions what the problem might be? The official Google Support didn't bother to answer me.

Thank you!

Answer:

Yeah, I have the same thing happening on my pixel 3a. I tried using the built-in pixel tips&support - only to get a clueless guy on the phone talking about connectivity when this doesn't work on either 4G or 60+mbps wifi. Let alone that what does a connection have to do with it, just save it on the phone and then like any other new photo upload later over wifi.

Answer:

Brand new Pixel 4. Same issue! Really annoying, Im sure google know about this, there are enough posts around the place with this issue.

Just tested with a few random downloaded MP4 video and saving after editing worked without a problem. Videos made from the phone itself do not save after editing! :(

Answer:

Same here, it started a few months ago and even clearing all Google Photos data and reinstalling the Photos app didn't resolve it. I'm on a gigabit fios with solid wifi so it isn't my bandwidth, the Google app is clearly broken in some fashion. There are dozens of threads about this issue, yet i never see any response from Google staff, I won't be getting a Google phone again, they don't care about their customers - to Google we are just data for them to sell!

Answer:

Searched online. Couldn't find a definitive answer

Hello Carlo, the hardware itself is the same, the only difference would be the plug pins and features depend on your actual location regardless of where you bought the device from.

Question: Google Photos vs. Google Drive

I need help, I'm so confused!!!  So I had Google Photos backup on my PC.  Worked great.  Get a message it's discontinued so I download and install Backup and Sync.  Nightmare!!  I have over 80,000 pictures on my PC.  It is starting back at 0 (even thought Google Photos backup already backed them all up). And it never makes it through the 80000 and starts over. So it is not backing up recently added pictures.  My questions:
1.  Why isn't backup and sync syncing all 80000 pictures, why does it keep starting over?
2.  I have a Google Photos folder in Drive, does this count against my quota?  I want all photos in Drive backed up to Photos, but I don't want all from Photos backed up in Drive
3.  I read there is a Drive backup and sync and a Photos backup and sync.  Two different applications???
4.  What do I do, I just need to make sure Google Photos has all my photos.
5.  My Google Drive has a folder called "My Computer" with sub-folders and a bunch of files.  What is this, does this count against my quota?

Answer:

Hi Alyssa, you are not alone but I will try to help.
2. If you don't need the Google Photos folder, disable the Drive option by unticking the box in settings. Right click and remove the folder. Your photos in Google Photos will not be affected by this action. Empty the Drive trash.
3. There are two section to Backup and Sync.  Google Drive sync which you should not use.  My Computer (Mac or Laptop) which will backup your photos.
5. You can ignore this as under normal conditions it should not use storage and is an integral part of backing up your photos to Google Photos.

4. The important bit.  Set up preferences as per:

After clicking OK it should complete the sync,

Good Luck,
Peter

Question: My viber pics were uploaded on google photos and disappeared after i deleted viber app. Help!

Need help restoring pics

Tamara,

Good afternoon. If your Viber pictures were successfully uploaded to Google Photos, they would still be visible even if you uninstalled that app (uninstalling an app will not delete any uploaded pictures).

Most likely, your Viber pictures were not actually uploaded to the cloud through Google Photos. There are often several folders on your device that contain image files, and many apps create new folders to store associated images.

Just because you can see pictures in the Google Photos app does not mean they have been uploaded. The easiest way to find out if your pictures are successfully uploaded is to visit the Google Photos website. If your pictures aren't on the website, then they haven't been uploaded.

If you open the sidebar menu on the left side of the Google Photos app and tap "Device Folders" you'll see all of the folders that contain image or video files. The folder thumbnails that have a little cloud icon in the bottom right corner with a diagonal line through the cloud are the ones that are not currently included in the automatic backup. You can change this by tapping the folder thumbnail and then tapping the toggle icon to turn on the automatic backup.

So, if your Viber pictures were in a folder that was not being backed up automatically, and if that folder was deleted during the app's uninstall process, then unfortunately there is nothing that Google or any of the volunteers in this forum can do to help you get them back. Google can't recover files it never had in the first place.

~ Greg

I know that I am on the correct account. I know that I have purchased plenty of storage and I also know that I Have backed them up correctly to the cloud in the past. They seem to have disappeared in patches. Please help me.

Answer:

Hi Hollie Smith
1) You need to make a check: open the Photos website, and check the display files there: https://photos.google.com

2) Clear Google Photos and Google Play Services data :
To do this: select Settings - Apps - Services Google Play - delete data, namely data, even if there is a warning, they need to be deleted;
Then select the Google Photos application, and delete the data.

After that, delete the cache in the Storage section.

When you see a warning, then do not worry. This is a common procedure for cleaning applications in the device, and the very memory device. This will delete the data that is working incorrectly, and cleaning will allow to have correct data.

3) Remove the Photos application from the device, or remove the update for it, then download it again from the Play Store, and look at your files again - did they appear or not?

If nothing has helped to solve the problem, then send feedback.
