It's only happening on photos taken on my Mavic Air. Is there some way of having the engineers take a closer look at this? Nearly every bracketed set on the Mavic Air is exhibiting this issue. NO, you cannot add photos to "Things" or "Places" albums.  
You can now add tags to faces in the People album. 

If you want to complete these albums you can:
  1. Add all photos from such albums to a "normal" album.
    You can repeat this after some time: the same photos will not be added again. 
  2. Add missing photos to that album

Correct. That is how Google implemented it. You can submit feedback in the main menu of Google Photos to suggest this new feature, but do not expect a reply. 

Actually only the info in the "Description" field will be shown when browsing the images. But you can search on the file names. Your example IMG001-19-10-18-10-00 can be found when you search with that name (without .jpg).

I don't really need to search Google Photos for a particular photo since the content there simply reflects what is on my hard drive, I use it only as a backup. But it would surely not be too much for Google to at least include the file name in the global view so that when I visit the site I can get some comfort that the backup is working as it should.
Generally I find Google Photos very crude in its structure (eg. albums not being automatically created to reflect my folder structure, as one would expect) and having looked around this forum there are many others who would concur.

I certainly agree that ignoring the folder structure on your computer is a big flaw of Google Photos. But I do not see how showing the file name otherwise than in the info panel will greatly facilitate the possibility to check whether the backup is working as it should. 

I assume that you use Backup & Sync on the computer to upload (which I don't because I want all photos in albums, thus I upload manually). Does not that mirror the computer folders in the computer section of https://drive.google.com/drive/my-drive and thus allow to check completeness, for example by comparing numbers of photos in these folders with the folders on your computer?

I have many instances of duplicated photos on my local machine. For example, I have a folder called \\Subject1 with 100 photos in it, and a folder called \\Subject 2 with 100 photos in it, but there are, say, 10 photos common to both, ie. I have identical copies of 10 of the photos in each folder.
Until recently, Backup and Sync would tell me that "These photos are already in Google Photos" for 10 of the photos when syncing the photos. This was logical, saved my bandwidth and saved your server space.

But I have noticed today that duplicate photos are now being uploaded twice. I can see this is happening by looking at the web page https://photos.google.com/search/_tra_ which tells me what photos were uploaded today and there are identical photos sitting there right next to each other.

Is this a policy change? If so, it's a waste of my bandwidth and your server space. If not, it's a flaw which you must address forthwith.

The only reason that look-alikes would reach Google Photos is that you have changed something in these pictures - even by typing or editing a caption in your editing software. 
I have no indication that something has changed in the Backup & Sync app unless the July-changes which indeed do not neglect changes like adding a text anymore.

I posted yesterday because I had taken over a hundred photos and placed many of them in two folders immediately after importing them from my camera. They are totally identical.

  • I do not know of a policy change. I did a small test: I copied the exact same photo twice to a new folder with different file names: only one was uploaded. Like Rinus I suspect that there must be some (even tiny) difference other than the file name. 
  • Is this systematic for recent uploads?
  • How did you create the duplicates? 
  • Could you share with us two identical uploaded photos so that we can try?

In addition to Jan, but more over Backup& Sync (B&S)

First it is useless to see Google Photos as a valid backup because you never will be able in future to download in any comfortable organised way - even apart from the compression to High Quality (if used).  
So GP is for comfortable viewing on multiple devices (including Chromecasting) and sharing. 
Besides B&S does upload to GP only once, so later local edits (and deletions) are not followed online. 

But your pc-folders are synced to the Computer-tab on Drive and there is your real backup-image and that follows later local changes as well. However: on Drive this image takes no additional storage in your account, so you have a double advantage: well organised, but for no penny at all. 

Furtheron it is quite abnormal behavior to create two identical folders with newly imported camerapicture unless this was done by accident or for some special purpose you did not tell. 
But because it are two folders, they got synced to Drive and thereby their contents was uploaded to Photos and apparently Photos was not able to block these duplicates because they came from a different folder. 

If you have acted always in this strange way before July without getting duplicates, the behavior of B&S also has changed in this extraordinary way. If you type the name of the second folder in the searchbox of GP, you may see these pictures selected and then you can hide them by archiving or even delete them.

It's not abnormal or accidental at all to have the same photo in two folders on my hard drive. My business involves having separate folders for projects, some of which have cross-over with others.
Why do you think Google Photos is not a valid backup? I would never download in any comfortably organized way as you say, I would only download at all if my device failed and I needed to retrieve the whole lot together. The compression is not relevant since none of them are over 16Mpx which I believe is the threshold for compression.

Just checked: two folders with identical pictures were created and thereafter syncing was restarted. 
Result: two folders with identical pictures on Drive (your backup) at https://drive.google.com/drive/computers, but only one set of pictures at photos.google.com as expected - so no dups there as expected. 
So it stays unclear what you did different to get duplicates.

You are confusing two different systems. 
The "syncing" from Photos to Drive was stopped in July, but that was towards the (optional) Google Photos folder in Drive, And that folder does not have anything to do with the folders in the Computer-tab in Drive which are synced from your computer via the Backup & Sync app. At the same time this app uploads (not syncs) their contents to Photos. 
So your confusion must have cause duplicates, but with normal use of the app that would not have happened.

I will add the fact and some opinion.
Although I told B&Sync looks to be unstable, finally B&Sync could complete to sync the skipped file in the 3rd folder if re-start up B&Sync after quit it. 
I guess the cause of the skipped files is that there was a time lag between the processing on B&Sync and in the cloud since I performed the verification steps too quickly.

So, as my conclusion, B&Sync can upload a same photo to multiple folders in the Computers section of Google Drive, but Google Photos never accept to store in duplicate the photo having same Hash value as a file existed already in Google Photos.
You should investigate more if the duplicate photos are now being uploaded twice.

I have no my influence here, because I'm just one of among general user and just a volunteer respondent, then also I'm not going to join the program to be recognized by Google as an the Product Expert.

And then you even can't scroll very fast because the greys need to get filled via Google.
