I have a kids album shared with the rest of my family (5 other people) where only I used to add pictures and the others downloaded it to their albums.

Now, with the ability of Photos to auto add images based on face/name. I enabled it for all of us (6 people) with the option to sync old selected.

Now, the album has 6 copies of each photo in the album, with each person's name who shared it. How can I remove the duplicate photos and only share unique? Or merge all duplicates?

I discovered that I have a Brand Account : LeatherByJohan
I want to use that on Google+ (I already have a Google+ page for this account).
I shared a Google Photos Album with my Brand account so that LeatherByJohan can create a Collection with the photos contained in the album.
The attached screenshot shows the sharing options of the album.

My question: How do I access that email address the invite seems to have gone to??? I have never seen or accessed it and cannot find any trace of it in Blogger.

Answer:

Hi Johan, I apologise for not quite understanding what you are trying to do. If you do not have an email address and password for the Brand account then it cannot be used to share with. I'm happy to reach out to the team if you can explain in more detail, thanks, Peter

Answer:

Peter,
I don't know where the email  address associated with the LeatherByJohan brand account comes from.  I have never used it - the screen shot was the first time ever that I saw it, as I was sharing my photo album with my brand account.
I don't know where and how to access that email at all.   It looks like somehow it must have originated somewhere in Blogger.
I would really like to simplify this situation, access my photos from my brand account and not worry about another email account.
Your help is much appreciated.
Johan

Answer:

Johan,

I think we will leave that to a mystery, it looks like you are getting help at Google+ Peggy K is very good and should help you resolve your question,

Question: Why do some pictures uploaded from my Pixel 3 XL have a reduced file size and how to change that?

I've just checked some holiday pictures I took and noticed that, seemingly at random, some pictures have a lower resolution and file size than the others, see the screenshot:

It's a normal, unedited photograph, not an animated picture. I've verified on the web that I have Original Quality toggled, although I couldn't find the quality settings on my phone, see screenshot again:

What can I do to change this and what causes this weird issue in the first place? Most other pictures are saved at the normal 12MP quality.

Answer:

Hi Naitimo,

It looks like that example has not been taken by the same camera, but exported from another 3 XL

The method of export may account for the change in size, can you explain exactly how that photo has been processed?

Answer:

Hi Peteran,

every picture I checked has 100% been taken with my Pixel. There is no foreign pictures being backed up to my Photo cloud.
I think I may have figured out why this particular one has been downsized so much, but I don't get why to be honest. I think I originally took a motion photo, decided it's not worth it for a building, and used the "Select shots" feature to save a still copy. This still copy is apparently very low quality.. sadly I deleted the originals afterwards.

What I don't get now is why some Panoramas are so low quality as well though, they look pretty bad at "PANO_20191103_174134.vr.jpg

Answer:

Thanks for the update, I can't help with the panos, those sizes look very similar to a few I have. Best to raise a new question for those as I don't have the option with my current device.

Answer:

Yeah, I guess. I feel like especially Panoramas should be bigger in size and quality and I still don't really get why the copys of high quality animated shots are so small. At least I know why it happened and can avoid it I guess..

Answer:

Don't know why the Google experts here haven't answered you, but I think I know what's going on.

When the Pixel camera takes animated photos, or does that "top shot" thing, it takes a bunch of pictures sequentially (really, the camera is constantly buffering continuous pictures, and when you press the button to take the photo it saves out a bunch from right before and right after the moment you pressed the button).

But here's the thing -- nearly all the buffered shots that it saves from before and after your button click are much lower quality. That quality is good enough for a motion picture, and not terrible for a static shot if it happens to have exactly the scene your want.

Google's top shot description explains it:  https://ai.googleblog.com/2018/12/top-shot-on-pixel-3.html?m=1

Note: when you pick the shot, you can ensure you're getting a high resolution one by picking one of the two or three with a little dot over it.

Answer:

Joseph Candelora - thanks for that link. It's very interesting. However from my own experimentation on my Pixel 3a, I don't get the results they claim.  i.e. they say:

"When you press the shutter button, Top Shot captures up to 90 images from 1.5 seconds before and after the shutter press, selecting up to two alternative shots to save in high resolution — the original shutter frame and high-res alternatives for you to review (other lower-res frames can also be reviewed as desired). "

That would be really nice. But it doesn't work.

With a motion photo, you have an original shot (which is the normal full resolution size) and a mini video clip.  On my Pixel 3a phone, if I open a motion photo and open the three dots menu in the upper right, I have a couple of options which are relevant. One is "export" and the other is "select shots".  The export option will pop up a menu with three options, choose the "still photo" and you'll get the original full res photo without the video.  If you choose "select shots" you'll be able to choose a frame from the little video but all of these frames (except for the one that says it's the "original") will be very low resolution (300-400 kb).

I tried several times to select one of their "recommended" shots and I always got a very low res copy.  The only one that was full resolution was the original.
That's unfortunate.  I have no idea whether this is a pixel 3a problem or affects all of the phones.  It would be nice if Google would respond.

Answer:

@Joseph & Debbie, great insight. The export selected shots explains the filename on Naitimo's example. It makes sense that this is a video clip frame as it is 2048 x 1536. It would be hard to imagine any camera with the ability to take 90 hi res shots in 3 seconds.

@Joseph, there are no Google experts, only users, in the case you and Debbie who have the same device and the experience to decipher the reality.

Experts is a name Google labels us with,  just volunteers who try to share our experience.

Answer:

Thanks for your additional insight guys. I feel like Google should explain this somewhere in the camera app or before saving the pictures. They're streamlining so much, with the newest camera update you can't even choose the picture quality anymore (wtf) so why not this?

I have videos on my Drive of .mkv format which I'd like to export to Photos to take advantage of the unlimit. This would be simple in the case of .mp4 videos, all had to do was visit photos.google on my browser, tap on the upload icon choose Drive which then opens and I navigate to the file then okay.
This does not apply to .mkv, when photos.google opens a mini-window displaying the contents of Drive, the only visible video files were .mp4
My .mkv vids play on my Drive app perfectly so the are not corrupted.
You coded your web to filter out other formats.
Now I could go through the download-upload and it does work, but that whole thing is like starting from scratch. Very painful and disappointing.
I hope Google engineers make such changes. Please.

Answer:

Hi Allan,

I submitted a bug report about this in July and have not received any updates from Google. I'm sorry to sat that the download/upload is the only workaround available,

I uploaded unedited DSLR (CR2 converted to JPEG) photos from my desktop to Google Photos so I would be certain to have an extra, shareable backup copy. I now want to edit the original photos on my desktop in Lightroom. I do not plan on changing the filenames.

Once I complete my edits and convert them to JPEG again, will they replace the unedited versions I originally uploaded, or will they become a second "copy" of the photo? In other words, is there a way to get the edited version to replace the unedited one or will I have to manually delete?

Thanks!

David

Answer:

Hi David, I am sorry to say that they will uploaded as new photos and become second copies and you will have to manually delete the existing copy.

One way to help with this is to select all the current copies and Favourite them, the star will let you quickly see the old copy for deletion.

Answer:

@David
As an alternative for "starring" the photos in order to distinguish the old from the new uploads, you can also add the original uploaded ones to an album and the new upload to another album. You can upload manually directly to an album (drag & drop or via the "Add photos" icon).

Answer:

Oh, that's too bad. I was afraid it would be something like that.

Thanks for the quick response!

Is there any sort of hidden limit somewhere for the amount of photos you can upload to Google Photos in High Quality (as opposed to original quality) - I've had a dig around and can't find anything. I know there is a limit of 20,000 photos per album but what about total size? According to Google Takeout, my archive that I created came in at just shy of 47GB (substantially more than the free 15GB we get)

That's not even 10% of the photos I'm uploading as an emergency backup (Yes I backup the originals on both external hard drive(s) kept away from home and on Backblaze but in the event that both of those backups fail, at least I've got some sort of backup albeit in lower quality rather than losing the photos entirely!)

Hello Salimkk,

Welcome to the Google Photos Support Community.

If you've deleted them from Google Photos and want to restore them, please know that photos/videos deleted from the Google Photos library, goes to the Trash for the next 60 days. So, in case, you deleted it by mistake you can always restore it from Trash folder within those 60 days (post deletion). But, if you don't find it in Trash, probably it must have been deleted more that 60 days ago. Unfortunately, restoring your lost/deleted photos and videos from Trash is the last resort.

If no, please let me know.

Question: How to recover permanently deleted photos from google photos.Kindly help it is important

Please help me for getting my permanently deleted photos back.I will be so thankful to you for my he…

@Namandeep Singh

The Google Photos team are not able to offer a permanently deleted recovery option, all we can do is ask you to check the following places in case they are still available in the ststem

1. Google Photos Help - Learn how to find your photos

2. Check your online account - photos.google.com
If your photos were successfully uploaded to your online Google Photos account they may be available there. Try visiting photos.google.com and searching for them. If you have more than one Google account, check all of them.

3. Check the Google Photos trash - photos.google.com/trash
Once you delete photos from your Google Photos account, they're moved to Trash for the next 60 days. If you deleted them by mistake you can always restore them from the Trash folder within those 60 days. Here's the link explaining how to recover them from Trash. If you have more than one Google account, check the trash for all of them.

If you accessed the Trash and manually sent the photos for permanent deletion, or if the 60 days expired, there is no way to recover them from Google Photos.

4. Check the Google Drive trash - drive.google.com/trash
If you deleted a file from the Drive trash you will need to contact a Drive Specialist directly to see if they can recover it:
  1. In a browser, like Chrome, go to the Google Drive Help Center.
  2. At the top right, click Contact us.
  3. Choose your issue and how you'd like to contact us.
5. Review other options
  • if you previously used Picasa, visit picasaweb.google.com and search for your photos.
  • check get.google.com/albumarchive to see if there are any hidden albums containing posts to other Google apps
  • have you made any backups of the photos on your phone, camera, computer, or elsewhere?
  • there is a small chance that you can restore the photos using a recover deleted photos app (Android). I haven't used them myself so have no specific recommendations. There may well be more app options if you visit the appropriate app store and try other search terms. I don't see any similar apps on the iOS store, but you could check yourself.
  • If you ever shared the photos with anyone else, it's possible they may have a copy they could share back or send to you.

Good luck, unfortunately if you have looked at all the options and still can't find your photos then there are no other possibilities we can suggest, other than if you have a Google One account you can contact 1:1 Support

It may also be useful to check this video:- https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ajIozO-EYxU  which might help remember something or at least stop the same thing happening again in the future,

Good Luck,

Question: Report Photo several times to Google request to DELETE https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=

Reported to google several times

Sandy,

I'm not sure how you tried to request that a picture is removed, but it might benefit you to read the official Google Help page: Remove an image from Google

Other than pointing you to an official page like the one above, there isn't much that any of the volunteers here in the Photos forum can do to help you with this type of issue. We don't have access to any user accounts, nor can we control or manipulate any Google websites.

One thing that might be worth mentioning is that the "gstatic" domain is not inherently dangerous or malicious in any way. We've had plenty of users ask about that domain in the past because they happened to notice it in the URL of one of their pictures. The gstatic domain is indeed owned and operated by Google, and it is used as a kind of repository to temporarily offload content from many other Google-owned sites in an effort to reduce bandwidth usage and improve performance.

So, basically, when things start to get clogged up somewhere, content can get pushed from some other Google site to gstatic to keep that site running smoothly.

That's just about everything I know for gstatic. Let me know if you have other questions.

Regards,
~ Greg

I was recently organizing my photos through my Google Pixel 3 (I didn't have the Back & Sync option on) into Albums and I noticed a lot of my albums were missing. When I check on the desktop photos after Syncing it, they aren't there either. I am just wondering where these albums have gone and how I can retrieve them?

Thank you,

Sam

Answer:

Hi Samantha,

Unfortunately the Google Photos app was designed to only upload photos and any device folders are not uploaded in the process. You can create Google Photos albums which are visible on the web and from other devices as follows.

Open the Photos app and tap the 3 bar menu: Device folders: Tap the device folder you want

Long press the first photo until the selection box is ticked then stroke down to the last photo

Tap the + icon and then Create Album, add a title and tap the tick icon.

Repeat for other device folders,

or check the screenshots in https://photos.app.goo.gl/R4bu8EeV5DUsMmY2A  which illustrate the steps.

Good Luck,
Peter

Answer:

Thank you for that PeteranDi. But my initial question is how can I retrieve those missing albums that I had created on the device itself and why have they disappeared? I know how to create two types of albums.

Let me know,

Thank you

Answer:

Sorry Sam, I can’t answer either of those questions. Unless you used free up space or deleted the device copies of the photos there is no logical explanation.

I have Google Pixel 2XL phone. On Saturday went with my daughter for concert in London and was making lots of pictures to keep good memories for her as it was her 1st time for this type of event. Next day I couldn't find my pictures, they just disappeared. I went on my Google Photos app, in the morning it was shown with crossed cloud mark, as not backed up, but I couldn't open any of the pictures or videos as it just kept loading and loading. But now it shows grey squares. I am 100% sure I haven't pressed delete or free space. I had this issue in the past few times already, but I blamed myself as thought I pressed something. But not, it's an issue. I lost lots now, and I don't know what to do. Around 161 media lost. Please see screenshots below. The coloured ones are the way my google photos looked in the morning it also was saying 161 to back up, grey boxes how it looks now. I haven't done anything to my phone or photos and I am using original Google camera app to take pictures. screenshots Hyolyn

I had faced similar issue where recent photos up to 2 months were disappeared from my device. Is there any possibility to get official response?

Answer:

I run a massive social media account and a huge part of that is the photos I take...

Been trying to pull up/reuse older pics but it looks like this stupid phone decides to delete old photos! Unless I'm expected to believe I didn't take more than 5 pictures last year.

Sure I have the uploaded pictures on my IG but I didn't buy this phone (XL version) so I'd be stuck with subpar downloaded pictures.

Answer:

Had the same thing just happen, a bunch of pictures and a video with picture captures during it all disappeared but left others there.  Happened while I was holding my daughter's iPhone next to it as the pictures I took after giving it back are all still there.  Anyone ever experience this or just coincidence?

Answer:

Help. About 30+ photos and a couple of videos from our vacation are just gone as if they were never taken. Back up said 70, but only about 35 show up. At some point, my phone shut off for heat, but the screen said... working fine before I took missing footage. Please help!?

Question: i Want to end my services with google photos and download all my photos. What is the method?

Download entire photo history for external storage.

Hi Brett,

Welcome to the Google Photos Product Help Forum!

>>> i Want to end my services with google photos and download all my photos. What is the method?

If you have a relatively small number of images (maybe less than ~2500) or if you have all of your images categorized in Albums, you might want to selectively download the images (e.g., by date range or album).

If you have many thousands of images you probably need to use the Takeout tool - more info:
Download Your Data  (actually there is some useful info here and is worth looking at).

Remember, certain types of changes you might have made in Google Photos (categorizing in Albums, addition of Descriptions in the Info Panel, changes to photo dates) may not be easily available via download or Takeout.

Make an attempt to reconcile record counts and review the extracted images before deleting the images in Google Photos.  Never rely on any single method of backing up irreplaceable images.

Good luck!

"Never rely on any single method of backing up irreplaceable images." What is your personal method for backing up, in more than one place, besides Google Photos?

Answer:

Hi Edshej,

Welcome back!  (Sorry, if I called you Brett, I guess that was a copy-and-paste error trying to leverage text from a previous answer).

My basic workflow looks SIMILAR to (but not exactly like) this old diagram. Everybody's needs are different and I am mostly concerned about catastrophic loss of individual images (not loss of Albums or Descriptions which I might have added to images).

Since this diagram was created several changes have occurred.
  • I now have an iPhone 8 (I continue to use Google Photos - iCloud Photo Library is OFF).
  • The Desktop Uploader was eliminated (and ~Replaced by the Backup and Sync Tool~ which I consider as too complex for my needs and have no desire to use it - this is partially because the number of images I use an actual camera for is now far less than 1%, it is not worth the system overhead monitoring for activity - I use "Upload" from https://photos.google.com/u/0/  when I want to copy images from my computer to Google Photos).
  • Now, rather than using Takeout to extract the images I (right click) Download folders of interest from the Google Photos folder of https://drive.google.com/drive/my-drive  I also tend to do the extracts every several months (or after significant trips / events).
I normally leave images on my phone (where the vast majority of my images are captured) until I am sure I have extracted the images to my external USB drive (then I "Free up space").  Once a year, I copy my on-site USB drive (which is in a secure location) to a USB drive in a remote location (I physically take the drive there).

Chris Guld (of Geeks on Tour and another contributor here) organizes her important images to Albums each month, then backs up the albums to another cloud service and does not worry about the low priority images not in albums.

Everybody's needs are different.  What somebody does may depend on how they tend to capture, edit, and organize their images.  Also possibly significant is what hardware you have and what cloud services you might be using for other purposes.

Best regards,  Dougsap (volunteer Google Photos user)

Answer:

Your comment: "I normally leave images on my phone (where the vast majority of my images are captured) until I am sure I have extracted the images to my external USB drive (then I "Free up space")."

It is this redundancy I want to avoid (and had hoped Google Photos would have solved for me).
As I see it at any one moment you have three instances (or redundancies) of your photos. 1. Google Photos 2. Your phone 3. Your USB drive. (perhaps 4 with your remote location USB).
For the purposes of limited space on my phone...
I seek to have two locations only. 1. Google photos 2. USB drive.
I will take pictures and at the end of each day upload them to Google photos and delete them from my phone. (To free up space).
Then once every month download all photos (without losing any data/info).
I take a lot of photos and videos.

Answer:

Hi Edshej,

Welcome back!

You are probably in better shape since at least you have given some thought to it (and understand that you are exposed to a single point of failure until you extract the photos to a second source).

In reality, the odds of somebody who understands how Google Photos works and is completely in control of their account losing images in any given month is probably pretty low. However, everyday we see where people have not backed up images or deleted (and emptied the trash).  I would guess that a very small minority of people do indeed have multiple forms of backups.

There are some tools for moving files between different cloud services, but I don't have any experience with them. They vary in terms of platforms supported and I don't think most of them are free. (Search for something like ~automatically copy google drive files to onedrive~).

I took a two month trip last year and had no space problems storing >7000 photos (I don't take many videos) on my 64GB phone.  64GB is the new minimum that I would consider and fortunately that seems to be where the market is going.  I do try to backup frequently when I travel because loss or damage of phone is higher risk than things disappearing in Google Photos.

I do not see any redundancy here: if you delete from the phone before you move to the USB drive (or anything else) you temporarily have only one copy, which is not safe. There are solutions to this, for example:
  • I also upoad to another cloud service OneDrive. OneDrive is safer than Google Drive because there is no two-way syncing. It just uploads, which is perfect as backup. When all goes well you can simply delete from OneDrive once you have two other copies.

  • Even Google Photos has an option to prevent deletion by user error: share your library with a second account and activate the option to add all photos to the library of the second account. If then they got deleted from Google photos, they will stay on the second account.
The photos on account 2 do not use any storage (even in Original quality) till they are removed from account 1 or the sharing is undone.  It thus does not cost anything.

Answer:

@Edjshej
You say that you take a lot of photos and videos. Especially videos are a bit problematic at Google Photos. There are plenty of recent complaints about videos being processed for a very long time, of only available in lower resolution (even lower than "High Quality". To me that seems an additional reason for making a second back up before deleting from the phone.
See for example https://support.google.com/photos/thread/1941287 but there are others.

Hi. A month or two ago my pictures from Google photos were deleted. Also cleared from trash as well. Those were the pictures of me and my girlfriend. Can those pictures be restored back from the server end? Please. Those pictures mean a lot to us. We have deep regret for deleting those pictures. It would be of great help and I will be forever indebted to google. Please kindly help me get back the pictures. Pleaseeee. Google help me please..

Answer:

Hello Abhay,

Welcome to the Google Photos Support Community.

If you've deleted them from Google Photos and want to restore them, please know that photos/videos deleted from the Google Photos library, goes to the Trash for the next 60 days. So, in case, you deleted it by mistake you can always restore it from Trash folder within those 60 days (post deletion). But, if you don't find it in Trash, probably it must have been deleted more that 60 days ago. Unfortunately, restoring your lost/deleted photos and videos from Trash is the last resort.

If no, please let me know.

Regards,
Amanda

I am trying to save storage space by converting my *videos only* to High Quality.
I am doing this because I learned that a) videos taken from an Android phone have very low compression, and b) I can live with the quality difference between Original and High quality.

(Yes, I understand that this cannot be done automatically.  Please read on.)

I am doing this as follows:
1) search for "videos" on Photos
2) select a number of videos and download to my local computer
3) using Settings, set my quality to High
4) delete the downloaded videos
5) re-upload the videos

My expectation was that the re-uploaded videos would be significantly smaller than the original downloaded videos, but this does not always appear to work.  Today, I attempted this with five videos.  It appears that the smaller ones were compressed, but the larger ones were not!  Any idea what might have happened?

Question: Doodle function in Google Photos

Is there going to be an update soon to Google Photos that will have this functionality?

Good morning. That would be a really neat function, but I haven't heard anything about that type of addition. My recommendation is that you use the app's Send Feedback feature to request that developers add in a doodle function. You can find Send Feedback in the sidebar menu on the left of the app screen.

Hey there,

Thanks for posting in the Google Photos Support Community.

Could you please sign out of Google Photos and sign back in with the same Google Account to check if that sorts the issue.

Meanwhile, could you please try the same on a different device/account (if possible) to check what happens next and to know if this is a device specific issue or account related issue.

Let me know how it goes.

Answer:

Hi David,

Thanks for writing back.

Could you please try using the Google Photos app by switching the phone to Safe Mode? In Android 4.1 or later versions, to reboot into safe mode you have to long press the power button until you get the options menu which has the following options –  Power off, Airplane mode, and Silent mode. After getting these options on your screen, long press the Power off button, you will be getting a message that prompts you to reboot your device to safe mode. By tapping the OK button, your device will reboot into safe mode, which will disable all third party applications you have installed. You can be sure that your device started in safe mode by seeing a safe mode indicator on the bottom left side corner of your device screen.

Keep me posted.

Best,
Amanda

Question: how do you backup my photos

Srinu varri

Hello there,

Welcome to the Google Photos Support Community.

Could you please elaborate the issue or your query for me to assist you better? Are you referring to backing upyour photos/videos from your Android device to Google Photos? If yes, to Backup your photos/video, before you start, make sure you're signed in.
  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Photos app .
  2. Sign in to your Google Account.
  3. At the top, tap Menu .
  4. Select Settings  Back up & sync.
  5. Tap "Back up & sync" on or off.
Things to keep in mind about this setting:
  • Changing backup settings will affect all apps that use Back up & sync, such as Google Drive.
  • If you have Back up & sync on, deleting the Google Photos app from your device will not turn it off. To turn off Back up & sync, follow the instructions above.
Here's a useful help article to know about backing up photos and videos to Google Photos.
    If no, keep me posted.
