There is a fix over in https://support.google.com/photos/thread/173081 with added information that when you go to settings->apps, then select show system apps from the ellipses in the upper right corner before going on to Media Storage and clear the cache and data files. I have a Pixel 4 and I use Portrait mode on back and front camera very often. I was always able to tweak the focus area if the photo wasn't quite right. I could go into Google Photos, click the edit button, and once I went to the "depth" slider and foreground blur, I was able to slide the focus point around the picture and see how it changed the blur effect.
But it's been a few days now that I haven't been able to do this. My old portrait mode photos retained this ability (I can still do this in Google Photos on Portrait shots taken earlier this year), but any portrait mode photo taken since then doesn't allow me to edit the focus in Google Photos after it's taken. Especially since the camera sometimes fails to focus on the right subject/person.
Is this a bug or did Google just remove this option completely? It sucks either way! I use Portrait Mode often and I don't want to go through an editing app to get this done every single time I want to edit a picture. Any idea what's going on or how I can fix it/get it back without uninstalling the latest update?

We share our libraries with each other. I have google photos set to automatically save all photos she shares with me. She does not delete these photos from her account as we both have limited free storage.
But recently, any photos shared by her to me have been taking up storage space on my quota (now 4 GBs). I've tried deleting the photos shared with me and my storage quote goes down again (e.g. 2 GBs).
Reading google's help documents, shouldn't these photos not count against my storage space (as she still has them in her library too)?

If you have back up & sync on, photos and videos you delete will stay in your trash for 60 days. You can recover deleted items by following the below steps:
- Open the Google Photos app

- At the top left, tap Menu

- Touch and hold the photo or video you want to recover.
- At the top right, tap Restore
. That photo or video will be restored to your Google Photos library and added back into any albums it was in.
Incase, if you're unable to restore from the Google Photos, the following things could be the reasons:
- Photos and Videos moved to trash more than 60 days ago.
- Photos and Videos moved to trash, then emptied your trash.
- Photos and Videos moved to trash permanently deleted from your trash.
If you don't find the photos, I'd recommend you look for your photos here, signing in with all your Google accounts if you have more than one:

- drive.google.com (under Google Photos)

- You moved it to trash more than 60 days ago
- You moved it to trash, then emptied your trash
- You permanently deleted it from your trash.

My photos are stored in Google Drive, and then I display them in Google Photos via the "Sync photos & videos from Google Drive" checkbox.
I have many older photos which are not geotagged, so I have been systematically tagging them using a Windows application (not the Google photos web interface, because I wanted the GPS data to be attached in the original files' metadata, rather than just when they're viewed in Google Photos). I have confirmed that the geotagging in the file metadata is valid and correct.
When I save the newly-geotagged files, Backup & Sync re-syncs the files to Google Drive, so it recognises that I have made changes to the metadata. However, even after waiting 48 hours, Google Photos does not recognise that the geotag has been added - I guess because it looks at the image itself, realises that the actual photo has not changed, and then doesn't update the metadata?
I have found a workaround whereby I can remove the photos from Google Drive, geotag them, and then re-upload them to trick Google Photos into thinking they're brand new photos, and it therefore reprocesses them. However, this seems unnecessarily complex.
Is there a way I can force Google Photos to re-examine the metadata of all my photos, in order to refresh the geotags? My photos are stored in Google Drive, and then I display them in Google Photos via the "Sync photos & videos from Google Drive" checkbox.
I have many older photos which are not geotagged, so I have been systematically tagging them using a Windows application (not the Google photos web interface, because I wanted the GPS data to be attached in the original files' metadata, rather than just when they're viewed in Google Photos). I have confirmed that the geotagging in the file metadata is valid and correct.
When I save the newly-geotagged files, Backup & Sync re-syncs the files to Google Drive, so it recognises that I have made changes to the metadata. However, even after waiting 48 hours, Google Photos does not recognise that the geotag has been added - I guess because it looks at the image itself, realises that the actual photo has not changed, and then doesn't update the metadata?
I have found a workaround whereby I can remove the photos from Google Drive, geotag them, and then re-upload them to trick Google Photos into thinking they're brand new photos, and it therefore reprocesses them. However, this seems unnecessarily complex.
Is there a way I can force Google Photos to re-examine the metadata of all my photos, in order to refresh the geotags? Good question. I do not know of a way in the Google Photos app, but when you access Google Photos in Chrome you can: tap the 3-dots > Find in page.

Mostly this is about adding recent (new) photos which are near the top of the library.
If you first go to the albumpage in the Photos-app, you can more easily find the needed album and when you open that album, you can hit the + to can select these recent pics straight in library and then hit Add right-up.

Google Photos works with iOS to download the full resolution photos from iCloud to be backed up to Google Photos at Original or High Quality size according to your Backup settings.
It does this in batches, so if there is very littlespace it will take longer. You may also have to leave the app open while it progresses, and check the background setting in the main iOS settings to see if Background App Refresh is enabled for Google Photos. I believe this is only working is iOS 13.2
