In the list of suggested contacts there are two parts:

"All contacts" which reflects your contact list https://contacts.google.com. When you delete a contact there, it is also removed from "All contacts" in the suggestions.
On top there are 8 contacts "based on your interactions" (let's call it the "top list"). Deleting them from https://contacts.google.com does NOT remove them from that top list. It seems that they only disappear when other contacts are added. For testing I shared something with 8 addresses from the "All contacts" list, and those now replace the old top list.
It thus looks like these unwanted addresses should disappear when you share regularly using that method. If not you can force them away by sharing something with 8 addresses from the "All contacts" list.

on a Windows computer you can extract all the contents of the takeout zip file into a new folder.

Extract to a folder
Search the new folder for *.jpg
Select all and copy the results to a new folder

The residual contens are only useful if you have advanced database capability, if you just want the photos you can delete what's left,

I certainly understand the importance of being able to view photos. Could you please confirm, if you're able to see the photos on the web version of Google Photos?

In the meantime, please ensure that you're signed in to the right account on your device and check for the following things:

Are they in the trash: https://photos.google.com/trash.
If you suddenly lost your photos, they might have a different date. If a photo is added from a device with different date and time settings, the timestamp may be wrong. Learn how to change timestamps on photos.
Search for a person, place, or thing in the photo:

On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Photos app .
At the top, type what you want to find, for example: "dogs", "New York City", or someone you've labeled.

If your search is coming up empty, try:

Search with a different keyword.
Search again in 3—5 days. It can take awhile for photos to be searchable.

@Meriem: If you have multiple accounts, you can choose which account you're using and switch accounts on the Google Photos app:

Open the Google Photos app.
Tap Menu .
- If you don't see the menu icon in the top left corner, tap back until you're on the app home screen.
Look for the name and email address of the account you're using at the top of the screen.
Tap the Down arrow .
Tap the account you want to use or tap add account.

Blogger
YouTube
Gmail
Google+

If you don't find the photos, I'd recommend you look for your photos here, signing in with all your Google accounts if you have more than one:

get.google.com/albumarchive
drive.google.com (under Google Photos)
other online photo or file storage services you use (e.g. Dropbox, OneDrive, iCloud).

I'd also recommend you contact the Google Drive support team as they can restore photos up to 21 days after deletion if the photos are available in the Google Drive.

Could you let me know if you're experiencing the same on Google Photos web version? If no, I'd suggest trying the below steps and share your results.

Disconnect and reconnect the Google account from the Google Photos app on your iOS device.

Welcome to the Google Photos Product Help Forum.

You almost certainly don't really have two sets of every photo, but rather you are seeing the images from the Google Photos Cloud (or a very small cached image).

You can always delete the app on a device where you don't want it, but of course, you won't then be automatically ~Backing up~ your images to the Google Photos cloud. If you do choose to remove the App (e.g., from your iPad) take a test image and confirm that you see "Backup complete" (or the checkmark) then, "Free up space" from the 3 line menu before in the Google Photos App before deleting the app - just to capture as many images as possible.

In the unlikely event that you also use "iCloud Photo Libary" don't do anything, write back for some more suggestions.

If desired, you can always access your Google Photos from https://photos.google.com/u/0/ even on an iPad.

I seen to be unable to copy from gmail on my iPad so I'll just have to retype.

I do use ICloud photo library and I do have two sets of photos. One is the photo app(?) that is already installed on the iPad when purchased. My daughter sent me an email with photos of a play that my grandson performed in. There was over 400 pictures and the email did indicate that they were google photos. Of course I opened it to see the pictures. I didn't install the app (on purpose anyway). After the play photos downloaded all of my photos showed up on the google thing and there was a new icon on my screen. Now I have identical photos in two places except the play photos are only on the google app. I want the photos of the play but I don't want the google thing to have all of my other photos on it. I can't delete the pictures that are on the google thing because it deletes them on my real photos. I like what came with my IPad. I don't want google photos.

Hi Pam,

I really don't think you have identical copies in two places, you have two programs mostly looking at the same thing. That's why when you delete it in one place it deletes it in the other.

From your description, I am a little confused, but I assume since you posted here you have seen "Google Photos" either under the icon on your home screen or at the top of the screen inside of the application.. Is that ?

Since you also use iCloud Photo Library, be very careful no matter what you do. Don't delete the original message from your daughter with the 400 photos, you can always get them again if you lose them. However, be very careful with your remaining images - don't delete anything in Google Photos (also don't use "Free up space").

For reference, here is a related thread, but honestly this is more for other people. It needs to be read it its entirety and some things maybe incorrect: Google Photos iOS and iCloud Photo Library simultaneously

If you have the sole copy of any precious irreplaceable images make sure that you have a backup outside of iCloud Photo Library and Google Photos.

I recommend that you have a friend, family member, or somebody at an Apple Store help you uninstall Google Photos (if that is indeed what you have on your iPad). It should be straightforward, but there may be warning messages or something else which somebody with more experience with iOS should see.

If you get messages like that from your daughter in the future, it would probably be best to open them on a computer rather than your iPad (or be very careful reading messages which show on your screen).

Sorry, but I don't have any way to recreate your environment and test changing it.

I wish I could send you screenshots. There are indeed two icons on my home screen. One is the iPad photo icon. It looks kind of like a flower and has the word Photos under it. The other has four of the same geometric shapes in different colors and it has Google Photos under it. Having both of these is taking up so much space. I don't even care for google and now I feel like It's taken over my new IPad.

The closest Apple store is about 100 miles away. A full day away from home. I guess I'll just retire this contraption until I can figure out when I can make the trip.

Okay, no need for a screenshot. Your description confirms that you do indeed have Google Photos installed on your iPad.

Are you absolutely sure that you are using iCloud Photo Backup? You would be paying monthly for this, it is NOT the same as backing up your settings to iCloud.

Again, Google Photos does not create separate copies of your images. I would suspect the amount of space that it is consuming is relatively limited.

There is no need to go to the Apple Store or retire your iPad, but I think it would be a good idea to have somebody who is fairly comfortable with iOS sit with you if you want to uninstall the Google Photos App. Again, don't delete anything in Google Photos nor use "Free up space" if you are using iCloud Photo Library.

You seem to be indicating that your iPad is getting low on space. If the cause is from Photos, this may be a sign that your settings for iCloud Photo Library are not optimal, but I can't really make any recommendations on that. If somebody recommended iCloud Photo Library to you, ask them to look at your settings.

Since you're not that knowledgeable about Google, let me educate you. Google Drive is a different platform from Google Photos. It's like someone asking for apples but received oranges.

Sorry to hear you can't find you photos. I have a few points from the info you gave.

When you say you backed up your photos regularly, how did you do that? Did you not have back up and sync turned on to back up either all of the time or when on WiFi?
How did you notice these photos are missing - just through the app on your new phone? Check via the web @ photos.google.com to confirm. This will verify what is definitely backed up.
Do you have multiple Google accounts - Check all on Google photos in case some photos were backed up elsewhere.
The sync between Google Drive and Google photos no longer exists so it's unlikely you can find them there. If you want your photos backed up to Drive then you have to do this separately to Google photos now, See article https://support.google.com/photos/answer/9316089?hl=en-GSince your last device was stolen I would recommend to review your account security, check for any unknown devices, and change your Google password, possibly enabling 2-step verification. Hopefully stop anything else maybe going missing on your account.

I’m sorry, it’s not possible to recover photos permanently deleted from the Google Photos Trash. However, you may install to your Android device a deleted photo recovery app https://play.google.com/store/search?q=recover%20deleted%20photos&c=apps and run a scan for anything to recover.

In addition I recommend that you contact the Google Drive support team to see if any deleted files may be recovered. You can view the pictures you've uploaded to Google Maps by visiting the Google Maps website or opening the Maps app on your Android device.

From there, open the sidebar on the left and choose "Your Contributions" then "PHOTOS" to view all of the pictures you've uploaded to the map. You'll also be able to see the total number of pictures you've uploaded as well as the total number of views your pictures have received.

After further discussion with other Product Experts, it was brought to my attention that there is a known issue with photos and review sometimes disappearing. The Google Maps team is aware of this problem and are still working to fix whatever is causing this to happen.

To assist you better, could you please elaborate the post with a few more details and help me understand what is the exact issue so that I'll be able to address the issue with the best possible solution?

Incase if you want to backup any of your device folder to your Google Photos, you can turned "ON" back & Sync for the device folder that you want to backup? Settings > Back up & Sync > Back up device folders > Choose folder that you want to back up.

You can choose the folder by tapping Back up device folders from the settings on Google Photos App and select the folder that you want to back up. Folder can include:

Photos/Videos that you've downloaded.
Screenshots that you've taken.
Photos/Videos saved by other apps.

Check out this handy help center article for more information on "Change "Back up & sync" settings".

I signed in again, and some of my photos show up on another device, but at least the past day or so is missing. The app perpetually says it's backing up the same three photos, and whenever I try to share an album, I get a "saving recent changes" error message.

I certainly understand the importance of being able to backup photos and sharing them. Please know that, if a photo or video didn't back up, it might be because:

Item size: Photos larger than 75MB or 100MP, videos larger than 2GB, and items smaller than 256 x 256 can't be backed up.
Slow network connection: Your device might have a slow or no network connection.
Unsupported file type: See which file types can be backed up.

You may also upload photos to Google Photos from your browser:

On your computer, open photos.google.com.
At the top right, click Upload.
Find and select your photos.
Click Open.

As you're getting an error while trying to share albums, please try these steps:

Clear App data/cache:

Open your device's Settings app (not the Google Settings app).
Touch Apps.
Select Google Photos in the list.
Touch Clear data/cache

Update the Google Photos app on your Android phone:

Visit the Google Play Store.
Open Google Photos.
Touch on Update.

Restart your device.

I understand your concern. This isn't the experience we'd want you to have while using Google Photos.

Could you confirm, if you're facing the same issue with both the Portrait and the Landscape mode? Also, let me know if you're facing the same issue on the Google Photos web version? If not, I'd suggest trying the below steps:

Open your device's Settings app > Tap Apps & notifications > Tap App info > Google Photos app > Storage > Tap Clear data & Clear cache. (If you don't see "Clear data," tap Manage space.)
If the issue still persists, uninstall & reinstall the Google Photos app or the app updates (whichever is applicable).

If possible, try playing the video on another device and share your results.

Responsible to integrate or to think about improvements in joining two different components or features of products of a company is always an important task.

Shouldn't both sides or both groups of engineers in duty to look around for better and more possibilities - and then to look beyond their own nose.

If you think someone has unauthorized access to your account, you should immediately visit your Google Account page and update all of your privacy, sharing, and security settings (including changing your password to one that is highly secure and turning on 2-step verification if you think you need that as well).

You will also be able to view all devices that currently have access to your account and remove any devices that you did not authorize. Plus, you will be able to view any third-parties with access to your account, and remove ones that you no longer use/need.

Keep in mind that the only way someone can gain access to your Google account is if they have your login credentials. So, your neighbor would have to know your Google ID and password to get into your account.

I'm sorry, but the photos can't be restored if the trash is emptied.

Don't see the photo or video?

If something isn't in your trash, it can't be restored. You won't be able to restore a photo if:

You moved it to trash more than 60 days ago
You moved it to trash, then emptied your trash
You permanently deleted it from your trash

Source: See if you can restore deleted photos and videos

But there is maybe a small chance that you can recover the photos, you can try to use a recover deleted photos app.
