I have three Google accounts on my phone, one is personal and two are for work. I want my photos to sync only to the personal account. However, everything is now syncing to all 3 accounts.  I WANT these on the personal account, so if I turn off "backup and sync" it stops syncing any pictures to any account. How can I have only my personal email sync my pictures. 'I have the  Pixel 4 . It did not do this on the Pixel3. PLEASE help!

Answer:

Hello Ronald,

It would be very unusual for the photos to be syncing to more than one account, are you sure you are not confusing seeing the photos in the app with syncing.

Google Photos acts as a portal to view the photos on the device and does not actually upload them anywhere unless Backup & sync is turned on and only to the account specified in the Google Photos app Settings: Back up & sync section.  Please check at Google Photos using the different accounts to see if the photos have actually been uploaded,

Regards,
Peter

Answer:

Yes they are present in every account. Other people have noticed this as well if you search the forums. They did post suggestions for fixes for previous Android versions. The current one appears to have no fix. Please help!

Answer:

I've never known it before, I assume you don't have any other apps or desktop programs connecting these accounts.

Please try the following test
  1. With the main Backup account active in the Google Photos app
  2. Making no changes on the Android app and staying on the same web page, switch to account 2 or sign out of the main account then sign in to account 2
    • Take a screenshot of Added today to prove the photos have been backed up to the 2nd account
Thanks

Answer:

Can you share any screenshots. Without being able to replicate, or present a documented illustration of what you are experiencing I can't offer any assistance.

The only thing I can suggest is to remove the work accounts from your device to prove that the sync stops, then to create a new user partition for use with your work accounts.

After creating a new user you can switch to it and set up a completely separate profile with it's own Photos and camera settings.  For example I can switch between Home and Work and the two have no common apps or settings.  Switching is quick and would allow two Photo accounts to be used completely independently.

Answer:

Hi
I am not sure what to send a screen shot of? When I go to google photos, I have a couple email listings. The same pictures are in each email listing for Photos. My work and personal accounts all have the same photos

Answer:

Hi Ronald,

The problem I have is that in all my years using photos I never experienced photos syncing to multiple accounts, but I never say never and if the evidence is overwhelming then I will submit a bug report to Google.

My problem would then be to convince the interface department and they would just say it is impossible.

In order to demonstrate the issue the first step is to look at the accounts side by side on a computer in two windows as per the screenshot I have uploaded with this reply. In my case the two account show different photos at photos.google.com

Leaving those two windows open I would then ask that you take a test photo with account 1 and let it backup, then refresh both account 1 and account 2 to show that the same photo has been backed up to photos.google.com

Hope that makes sense, Peter

>>>  I am forced to work with a work place PC.  The administrator will not permit a zip opener to be installed on the business computers.  Is there any other way to import the pictures other than the ZIP format ?

It seems like you have two basic choices (#2 & #3 are similar and involve another computer which might not be an option):
  1. Download a single image at a time.  Then they will be downloaded as the original file type (usually jpg).
  2. Share the images to another (maybe personal) machine via Sharing album(s) or individual images. It is possible that Sharing is disabled on your Google Account if you are in an overly restrictive environment.
  3. Copy the zip file to a USB drive (or use another method) and take it to a computer with access to mainstream utilities. If you work for the NSA this might not be a good idea.
Good luck!

I have a programmatic SMS number and the use-case does not support sharing photo albums (does google photos even have an API?)

A user sent a Google Photos invite, which seems to have arrived from a short-code (23334).
I say 'seems' since the carrier doesn't support programmatic messaging inbound/outbound with short-codes as the remote number.
Since I can't send a message 'to' a short-code, I can't reply 'STOP' from this number.

What's the (or any) real number behind SMS?

I may need an escalation to Google for this question, I know.
I'm also reaching out to the carrier to try to get to the bottom of this.

My wife and I created a shared photo album. Now, our names appear in the bottom corner of the photos we each took. How do we remove our names from the individual photos?

Thank you.

Answer:

Hi Mark,

the only way of removing the names from the photos of a shared album is for all the users other than the owner to leave the album they joined, i.e. to click the 3-dots icon and then click Leave album. You will still be able to visit the album through its link but all the users other than the owner will no longer be able to add photos, comment, or receive notifications about album activity such as the addition of new photos or comments.

Google Photos "Free up space on your device" does not work with +7,000 photos. The deletion process just crashes and cancels (does not delete any photos from the phone's gallery. How can I delete photos from my phone and keep them in Google Photos without using "Free up"? "You won't be able to see photos and videos you removed if:
  • You use your mobile device's built-in gallery."

What is the solution to this?

Answer:

You can remove the photos using the Apple Photos app, what that sentence is saying is that you won't be able to see them again using the Apple Photos app, which is obvious because you have just removed them.

To test, try it with some newly taken test photos and empty the Apple recently deleted album.

Question: I got a new phone what happened to my photos

Hi Susan,

Welcome to the Google Photos Product Help Forum!

Make sure that:
  • You are looking at the "Google Photos" app on your phone (not the "Photos" app). The icons are similar colors so it is easy to look at the wrong one.
  • You are logged into the same account where you backed up your photos from your old phone.
It is not typical to download images to a new phone. It is much more typical to simply access your old photos via wi-fi.  For instance, I have approximately 77,000 images in my Google Photos I would not want them all on my phone because they would consume a lot of space.

You MAY want to download a relatively small number of images to have on your phone and you can do individual ones from "Download" on the 3 dot menu. I for instance, do download a copy of my passport and a few other photos so I have them even without wi-fi or cellular data.

If you are confused about which account your images are in, look at them via a browser (you might want to use an Incognito Window or Private Browsing) at:  https://photos.google.com/u/0/
Then, use the correct account in the 3 line menu of the Google Photos app on your phone.

Finally, it is not generally a good idea to use iCloud Photo Library and Google Photos simultaneously. If you do this investigate more - i don't recommend it (they behave differently and will create confusion and possibly data loss).

Good luck!

Answer:

Hello Doug or anyone that might be able to help.  So yesterday I took my daughter to a AT&T store to upgrade her iPhone 6 to a 10.  Her phone had not been backup for quite some time and she was worried that she would lose her pictures. The AT&T person at the store told her to install Google Photos on her old phone (which she did) and her photos would be stored on the Google cloud and then would be available on the new phone. She did see all her pictures on the old phone via Google Photos, so she turned in her old phone for a $80 credit towards other things she needed. The store wiped the old phone and put it in the back room and sent it somewhere this morning. On the new phone via Google Photos she does not see her pictures.

Yes I know the phone should have been backed up, but the AT&T store guy said using Google Photos would do the same, but didn't.  I am going to escalate with AT&T, but in the mean time want to know if there is possibly something that can be done at the Google side?

Does the fact that she saw her photos on the old phone via Google Photos mean they were on Googles cloud or merely that Google Photos recognized the photos on the old phone but they were not on the cloud yet?

If they did get to the Google cloud, then 1: shouldn't they show up on the new phone via Google Photos, and 2: if there was some sort of hiccup in the processing shouldn't Google be able to find them on a server somewhere under her account?

All help is appreciated as these photos mean the world to her.....and yes again, I know they should have been backed up but that's water under the bridge at this point!

Thanks

"Seeing the Photos" in the Google Photos app really means nothing. The app needs to be configured and it usually takes a fair amount of time to back up a phone of the first time (assuming hundreds or thousands of images).

What is meaningful is seeing the "Backup complete" message (or cloud with a checkmark icon).

If you don't see the photos in Trash from the 3 line menu of the app (or https://photos.google.com/u/0/ ) there is nothing that can be done on the Google side (because they were almost certainly not backed up).

Going forward, keep in mind that using Google Photos and iCloud Photo Library simultaneously MAY cause problems and I strongly suggest against it unless you do further investigation.

I am afraid that your daughter might be learning a painful lesson. Hopefully she posted some of her favorite photos to social media or shared them with friends.

Recommend

You can see and manage devices here.

Images on the device will still be visible. Images may have been downloaded (or shared in other ways prior to access being revoked).

You should probably also change your password(s) and consider using two factor authentication.

If you own the phone and believe you have lost access to it, you might consider locking or wiping the phone -  how you do this depends on the platform and version.

Good luck,  Dougsap (volunteer Google Photos user)

I have been uploading a lot of old scanned photos, many of which have been taken at now-closed restaurants and businesses.  Google Photo does not allow me to tag the photos to these businesses, even though a number of them are still on Google Map, shown as "now closed."  Does anyone know how to have Google Photo record this type of locations?

Google Photos doesn't unfortunately support adding or editing the location of photos. As a workaround, before uploading the photos to Google Photos you may use a third-party image editing tool to set or change the location data.

Google photos absolutely does allow adding or editing of photo locations, though it doesn't modify the actual EXIF data of the original image file (it just simply 'tags' the images in Google's interface). I'm also having this problem while trying to go back and better organize my old photos. Not an enormous problem, obviously, but as someone that likes having all of my photos and such 100% organized and accurate, it's a bit annoying.

Google — despite repeated requests — refuses to let you upload only one iOS album or favorites. This is because they want to all your backups and not be a photo sharing service.  Anyway, it's super annoying when you shoot 300 pictures and just want to put your favorite 20 in a Google album.  Anyone figured out a workaround?  Other than individually reviewing the photos a second time in the Google app after already doing it on iOS.

What is the maximum size/resolution I can upload?  Some of my photos (large panoramas) fail to upload.  The "best answer" to this question https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/photos/IyiRils6WJY claims 75MB and 100MPixels is the maximum, but I have a 21MB 94MPixel image that has failed to upload.

Answer:

Yes, but panos have sick ratios :-)
And Google does not inform us about the maximum ratio.
Or there is something wrong with the filetype.
I can't check, so you have to wait on more experienced experts.

Answer:

Great, but for 94M that would mean a height of 6K and 16K : 6K (5:2) hardly can be seen as a pano.
Then I would expect a ratio of 10:1 - so 16K width and 1,6K height and that is about 30 MP.

So the maximum you have seen, may be related to 16 MP (High quality limit).

Answer:

Hi Michael Smith 2065!
In some cases, this may depend on the speed of mobile data, on how much mobile data you have already spent on today, that is, on the exhaustion of the limit for uploading. Try to check the problem file through the download using the computer. Also check the file name in this panorama, and try changing this name. In addition, try to upload a panorama via wifi connection. These checks will allow you to understand the cause of the problem.

Answer:

With regards to the individual maximums, I don't believe that 16384 or even 32768 is the maximum, as I have a pano that is 33095 x 2343 which uploaded fine.  The image which would not upload was 38175x2463 so it is a bit bigger on both edge but not near any apparent magic numbers (e.g. powers of two).

With regards to data, I was already uploading on WiFi and continued to upload other stuff, it's just this one pictures that wouldn't upload.  It had a very similar name to other the other panoramas that successfully uploaded.

I also tried to upload via the web browser interface on my PC and it failed also, with "Can't upload item".

Answer:

Then there must be something wrong in the file which causes that refusal to upload.
Sometimes it may help to make a copy on desktop inorder to create a new JPG-file which does not have an internal mistake and then you can try again to upload.

PS: dragging into the browser also may cause problems - use the UPLOAD-button on https://photos.google.com instead.

Answer:

I'm having issues too and can't seem to find any logic behind the refusal to load some of my panoramas... I've loaded with no problems a 134MP panorama (18880x7112) and failing now to upload another of 124M (21707x5750). Loading from Desktop via "select from PC". Any ideas?

I had posted a Community Post asking this question before but it surprisingly disappeared from my discussion list.

I have reached my Google Storage limit (15 GB) and a majority is from Google Photos (90 GB). I am trying to export, backup or archive all my Google Photos in the shortest time possible with available Google tools. I cannot do individual downloads because we are talking 1000's of photos. I also cannot change from "Original" to "High Quality" for a recovery operation because of the risk of a losing a lot the high res data from older photos. When attempting to do a manual archive from accounts.google.com for Google Photos, I keep receiving an error "Archive Incomplete."  I have tried five times and it keeps happening.

Kindly find me recommendations on how to export all my data without errors so I can clear up storage.
