Hi Michelle, not sure if it works in Finder, but in Windows if you search the extracted Takeout files for *.json and deleted them you will be left with the photos. Note that there may be more than one copy is the photos are also in albums.
An alternate method if you have a second account is to:
1. Share your library with the second account: https://support.google.com/photos/answer/7378858?hl=en-GB&co=GENIE.Platform=Desktop
2. Accept the share and select Automatically add to library for all photos
3. Wait, might be best to leave overnight, until the photos have all been added to the second account
4. Enable 'Create a Google Photos folder in Drive' in Google Drive Setings
5. Use Backup and Sync, Google Drive section, to Sync down to your computer, or download manually the Google Photos folder at https://drive.google.com/drive/my-drive

On a Shared Album with comments enabled, you could use those - however, there are formatting limitations (size, etc.) and the comment will be underneath rather than to the side.

Here's another idea. If your photo is in an album, you can add text blocks to albums. While viewing an album, click the 3-dot menu and choose Edit Album, now you'll see a T for text block. If the device powers on then they may be recoverable even if you can't see the screen. If the device doesn't even turn on unfortunately you can't recover photos that weren't already backed up.
If it turns on and you have backup and sync enabled, they should auto backup to Google Phootos. You can go to photos.google.com or download the app on another device to check they're backed up. If you don't have this on or they're not backing up for some reason, yu may be able to recover them with a USB cable plugged in to a computer

I've been using GPhotos for years. The faces worked for the first few and occasionally it would update and discover new faces. I kind of realized passively it wasn't finding any new faces about a year ago, but didnt really care. I had spent time with older relatives identifying relatives that I didnt know very well or that had passed away long ago, so I can have a record of face / name / relationship in G - photos before it stopped recognizing new faces.
Recently my first born child was born and I was eagerly waiting for G Photos to recognize his face, however for two months it did not. Oddly, my wife (who has a separate account) had her G Photos recognize him. I followed some articles on this forum to try to resolve this and really the only thing i found was to uncheck and recheck the group faces box. Unfortunately this removed all my faces, but i was willing to do that in order to start getting it working again.
Unfortunately its been over a week and it still hasn't found any faces. I'm afraid its something that just won't ever work with my account. Quite frankly it was my favorite feature, to find pictures of my old relatives and look through them. Now I have no idea how to find them. I used to have this feature in my iPhoto (which i moved from) and the availability of this feature is what I liked in G Photos.
Can someone help? Is there anyone from G Photos that reads these forums?

We're mostly users here, like you.
When identifying faces for historical purposes, it's best not to rely on face tagging alone. It's better to add a caption in the photo properties before uploading to Google Photos. It's extra work but worth it in the end. As you've unfortunately experienced, things can go wrong on the web and tagging info gets lost. When identification are added to metadata, you can share the photos with others and they will be able to see the data.
If you add a caption to the web version, I don't think the caption will stay with the photo after being downloaded. Someone should correct me if I'm wrong about that.
I don't know a way to kick-start face tagging. Maybe "over a week" isn't long enough and you'll have to wait longer. We no longer can recommend unchecking and rechecking face grouping in settings because it can remove all face tags, like what happened to you. I assume you are in a country that allows face grouping. This feature is not available in all countries.

Its been over two weeks and it's still empty. Given that my account had not found new faces for over a year, and reading comments on this forum, it seems that there is a serious issue with this feature, however, I've read that some people's start working again after posting here and they assumed an employee did something on the backend.
The photos team should really consider either fixing or retiring the feature altogether since it's one of the main features marketed and one of the key differentiators vs other apps. It's very dishonest i Even iPhoto was able to identify faces back in 2009 (albeit not as well - at least when it's working as google photos).

If you are having trouble finding photos or videos, and for instances when you deleted photos and videos but cannot find them in Trash, please see this "Missing photos troubleshooter."
You may have already checked the Google Photos Trash bin and found nothing there. There are two possible reasons why the Trash bin is empty:
- 60 days have already passed since you sent a photo or video to the Trash. Photos and videos live in Trash for only 60 days before they are automatically and permanently deleted. You will not receive a notice that the items were deleted.
- You already emptied the Trash prior to 60 days of a deletion. When you chose to delete an item, you confirmed the warning box "Empty trash? Permanently delete items." Clicking the blue Delete button confirms the permanent deletion of your Trash items. Once the items are permanently deleted, the deletion is forever, and there is no way the Google Photos team can recover them.

I process photos in Lightroom and then upload them over to Google Photos as .JPGs. Photos is automatically setting the "date taken" time after uploading photos to something that is 7 hrs behind my current time zone. I did some time zone rejiggering in the past and it seems to think that I *always* want to have this apply, but this is not the case. It's super annoying. I verified that the timestamp in the EXIF of the .JPG prior to upload is correct. How can I stop this from happening?

Hi Steve, as you have probably noticed Time Zone iis an issue at the moment and we are waiting developments from Google. In the mean time -7 hours consistently is unusual. One of the surprising things I have noticed is that Camera information has an effect on this, perhaps a travel time setting or something, can you strip the camera info from the exported .JPG to see if it makes a difference. Or if you can share an example perhaps it behaves differently for another user in a different time zone which might give a clue. Regards, Peter

You can't actually remove them physically because the main photo pool is the original. Only shortcuts are placed in albums. What you can do in the same screen is to click on the 3 dot menu and select Archive. This 'hides' it from view.
You can later un-hide by clicking on the 3 bar menu, select Archive, then select the photo and use the 3 dot menu to Un-archive

The latest version of the web app shows a star between the i icon and trash bin when you open a photo.
But dragging photos to another place was already available in older versions. You can
- Open an album
- Click the 3-dots > Edit album
- Select one or more photos (by just clicking them anywhere)
- drag them together to a new place.
Note that the new order gets lost when the photos are downloaded or when someone adds them to his/her Google Photos library. I therefore rename photos in the correct order before uploading (saves the order when downloading), and/or change dates (saves order when adding to library).
