Yes, Rinus is right, I forgot about shared albums. If someone else has created an album and shared it with you, you can view it in shared albums and choose "show in albums" which moves it to the main Albums page, and once you've done that can later "Hide this album" which removes it from Albums and only shows it in Shared Albums, so then you would just go back to shared albums to find it again.
If you were the creator of the album there isn't (and never was) a way to hide an album.

My Google photos app was having trouble backing up the entire summer's worth of photos, and I decided to back up 3 to 4 months worth of photos at once before wiping the phone so that it could be repaired. After about an hour, it finally uploaded all 600 photos and videos and it said back up complete. Everything seemed fine. I wiped the phone and got a back up phone. When I opened the Google photos app on the new backup phone, my most recent back up photos date back four months ago, and I'm afraid I lost four months worth of photos and videos. Why did it say backup complete when it clearly was not complete? This sucks. Can they be recovered?

I had to click Stop and saw that actually 216 were uploaded. How can I find now which were NOT uploaded to upload them again? They are not the last ones, they are somewhere from the middle. I don't see any options like "upload only new(non-existing) photo". I cannot get a list of uploaded file names either. And I definitely don't want to look for every of 229 photos manually!!!

Just upload them again in a quiet period on the Google-server in your region. Pictures already "up" will not get duplicated unless you did change them a bit in meantime. That's the most simple approach.

This was in August. I am only now realising that 3 months worth of photos from January to April are gone. I even went back on my email notifications and found the shared album with them in it. But even though it says it contains 1800+ photos, there is only one left. I was SO careful to back up all my photos to two emails but still this somehow happened. Ive been trying to recover them but I don't even know what happened to them. Someone said that when you backup a significant number of photos, you're supposed to wait 24 hours just to be sure but I didn't know that.

I'm sorry for your lost phone and photos. if auto backup was turned on in the Google Photos app on the old phone you might be able to get the photos by visiting the photos.google.com website and signing in with all your Google accounts in case you have more than one.
In addition I recommend that you try to locate the lost phone with Android's Find your phone tool https://myaccount.google.com/intro/find-your-phone

- tap the 3 bar menu and select Free up space
- deletes all device copies after checking if they are backed up online at https://photos.google.com/
- OR tap a photo to open full screen
- tap the trash icon and Move to trash. Deletes from device and online with 60 days before permanent deletion
- OR tap a photo to open full screen
- tap the 3 dot menu and select Delete device copy. Deletes the device copy only

Just to let you know, Google Photos will only delete the backed up photos of Google Photos from your device through the free up space option.
Therefore, could you please confirm if you can find out the photos through the web version of Google Photos?

If you don't find them, I recommend looking for the photos using the below links:

here are some of the possible reasons why you are seeing photos you may not recognize:
- Your Google account shares storage with other products such as Blogger, Google Drive, Google+ or Hangouts. It is possible that you uploaded images to one of the other Google products which is now being displayed in Google Photos.
- You accepted someone’s invite to share their photo library.
- You uploaded someone’s files to your Google Drive storage.
- You left your account signed in on another device.
- You sold a device without resetting it to factory defaults.
- You received the images via a messaging application such as Hangouts, WhatsApp, etc.
- You configured the Google Backup & Sync software on a computer to upload the photos from a system folder such as the cache of a web browser.

When I was uploading photos from my computer, stupid google failed to upload some of them (for unknown reason of course) and hanged eternally at "220 of 229 uploaded" stage. I had to click Stop and saw that actually 216 were uploaded. How can I find now which were NOT uploaded to upload them again? They are not the last ones, they are somewhere from the middle. I don't see any options like "upload only new(non-existing) photo". I cannot get a list of uploaded file names either. And I definitely don't want to look for every of 229 photos manually!!!

Just upload them again in a quiet period on the Google-server in your region. Pictures already "up" will not get duplicated unless you did change them a bit in meantime. That's the most simple approach.
PS: 200 is not 2000, so you can check at recently added in the searchoptions (photos.google.com/search/_tra_) who are missing and if there is something abnormal with these pictures like much too less pixels or some borderline raw-format.

I'm sorry, but the photos can't be restored if the trash is emptied.
Don't see the photo or video?
If something isn't in your trash, it can't be restored. You won't be able to restore a photo if:
- You moved it to trash more than 60 days ago
- You moved it to trash, then emptied your trash
- You permanently deleted it from your trash
But there is maybe a small chance that you can recover the photos, you can try to use a program like Recuva.

I do understand the inconvenience as you're unable to install the latest version of Google Photos in your device. Therefore, I recommend trying the steps below in sequence, this may help in fixing the issue:
- Make sure your device is up-to-date.
- Try restarting the App through the following steps:
- Go to your App Settings.
- Click stop on the afflicted App with the Force Stop button.
- Wait a few seconds to make sure the App has stopped processing, and then attempt to re-start it.
- Close the background running apps through the following steps:
- Go to your App Settings.
- Display the Active Apps on your device.
- Select the App you wish to close and Force Stop it.
- Repeat this step with all active Apps.

So these photos were backed up to Google photos on your old device and now you have the new device, you open Google photos and you can't see them?
Can you check on the web for them too to confirm they were backed up @ photos.google.com and also check all accounts if you have more than 1.

Albums are no folders with copyfiles, but with links to the originals in library ("photostream"), so you can't remove these originals without ruïning these albums. But you can remove a shared album after a couple of weeks without deleting your originals. And you can have partly the same references in different albums.
I have the habit to build a yearalbum with good pictures only - the rest does not exist anymore or is hided in library by archiving. That album is not shared with anyone apart, but it also is the base for creating small secundary albums for sharing. Then I avoid the problem that I do not know which ones are in an album, because they always are in an album also.
