I had all of my pictures backed up from over the years and recently I went on the app to search for something and out of no where my google photos reset and deleted all my photos that I have saved in my gallery. They just disappeared and I don't know what to do now. A majority of everything I had is gone. I went onto my laptop to see if they would show up there, but they were gone.

Hello all,
Thanks for posting in the Google Photos Support Community.
@Sauru - Could you please elaborate the issue or your query for me to assist you better? Are you referring to an issue with Google Photos?
@Raven - I understand and I'll be happy to help. It can be possible that the photos weren't uploaded successfully to Google Photos (cloud) and also make sure you're logged in to Google Photos with the same Google Account that you used during the backup. Photos/videos that are not synced or backed up, will still appear in Google Photos and will have this icon
(which means not synced/backed up) or some photos/videos will also show up with the two arrows in a circle mean backup is in progress.
Once the upload is complete there will be no icon on any photos/videos. Often, many of us misinterpret that they are all backed up because the photos/videos show up in Google Photos and we over see the icons on each photo/video. If the photos/videos weren't backed up they cannot be deleted from the Google Photos library nor Trash.
In case, you are uploading a large amount of data (photos/videos), please know that it might take 24-48 hours for the photos and videos to sync across all devices. Please ensure to have 'Backup & sync' enabled on the Google Photos settings while you're backing up your photos and videos. To check is the content is backed up, login in to photos.google.com to checked for your backed up photos and videos.
However, if you're sure they were backed up, I recommend you looking for your video here:
- photos.google.com.
- photos.google.com/trash.
- picasaweb.google.com.
- drive.google.com (under Google Photos).
If a photo/s is deleted from Google Photos, it would go to Trash/Bin for the next 60 days (after deletion). Unfortunately, if the photos aren't found in Trash or deleted from Trash, I'm afraid, you might not find them else where to recover them because Trash is the last resort to retrieve your lost/deleted photos.
Meanwhile, please uninstall and reinstall the Google Photos app on your iOS device and login with the same Google Account to check if this sorts the issue.
Let me know how it goes.
Best,
Amanda

I have been at this for weeks. I have downloaded every photo and video from drive and google photos, and cultivating my collection in preparation for a fresh upload of the whole thing. I have had to convert video formats to get things working correctly. I had deleted all of this, subsequently, from Drive and Photos, making sure to turn all syncing off so it wouldn't re-upload anything.
All of a sudden I have almost 2000 photos in Gphotos again. WHY?! B&S seems to imply uploading any more will upload them to drive, and not photos. As far as i understand, Uploading or syncing to drive counts every photo against your data allowance, regardless of quality. Also, I'm 80% certain that syncing my photos from my computer will result in thousands of duplicates. I'm at my wits end here. How can I just make this work?

Hello
I first started having this problem a year ago when I had a 256gb iPhone 7+ and 50k photos. The "Free Up Space" N-E-V-E-R works when a user has that many photos.
I have since upgraded to a 256gb iPhone X (running iOS 11.4, the latest as of 06/24/2018) with an always-auto-updated Google Photos (currently 3.22.0) and now have 70k+ photos on board (213gb worth). I choose the FREE UP SPACE command in GPhotos, get a dialog box "Delete 70,731 items from device to free up space". I then click the "DELETE (70,731)" button (it turns light grey when I click it) and then... Nothing happens. That dialog box just stays on-screen for several minutes. I have let it run OVERNIGHT, untouched. There are two usual outcomes: GPhotos is unresponsive and I have to FORCE QUIT it. Or it crashes on its own and I have to Re-Launch.. Either way, NO space is freed up. No photos are in the Recently Deleted album of Apple Photos which is where the photos should show up if the FREE UP Space command was successful. As I said, NOTHING happens. See attached screenshots.
So PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE, Google Engineers: Please add ASAP a feature to delete only "n" number of files as a workaround. Example: Remove 1000 oldest images. Etc.. Or Remove all videos (and only videos: a) Most people have fewer videos and b) videos are so much larger than pics so quickest bang for the buck for the storage-challenged). That would be SOOOO COOL!!
In the meantime, my iPhone is pretty much dead in the water w/o a solution, 252.6gb of 256gb used and that's with virtually ALL apps offloaded (except the ones I desperately need to use daily, Google, Gmail, Google Maps, Waze, etc..). Please help!!
PS. Once upon a time (3 years ago?), Free Up Space did work for me. But I let my photos build up as I suddenly had iPhone devices w/more capacity. So "Regular" reminders to free up space should be "STANDARD" for all users to avoid my problem. Meanwhile, what can I do?
Thank you for all suggestions. Please see the 3 screenshots below and please don't tell me to go back to iCloud (worst cloud implementation in history!).
Christian G.

Answer:
Hi Krystyan, quite a mess you have. Unfortunately Google do not provide user support so you are pretty much on your own. All I can suggest is that you open Apple Photos and in Albums and starting with your videos select pages worth and delete. Don't forget to empty the Recently deleted album or the space will not be reclaimed. Good luck, Peter
Answer:
Another option would be to turn iCloud on with Optimise storage and it will remove most of the local storage. You can then leave and ignore (just in case) or turn iCloud off which will delete the local copies.

not edited
The problem is that we don't know how these edits were stored - perhaps not at all like in Picasa in the past. There you can save the edits per folder and then the edited version will be synced to https://drive.google.com/drive/computers but not to https://photos.google.com because that is a one-time upload.

Hi Daniel, sorry to hear you are having so much trouble. If you are uploading to Drive, it may be that you have the setting to sync photos to Google Photos enabled at https://photos.google.com/settings. If so you can untick the option and they will go away. If not then we will have to go through your Backup and Sync settings, don’t despair, Peter

I thought that you deleted everything, then why do you expect duplicates ? Anyway: it is wise to try with small numbers and see what happens. I prefer to upload manually (UPLOAD button or drag & drop to https://photos.google.com/). That gives more control. Also: you said " I am cultivating my collection in preparation for a fresh upload". Not sure what "cultivating" means here, but if you have put them in folders then uploading manually allows to easily add them to albums in Google Photos.

Here's the storage screenshot. Google Photos is stuck at 12.94 since 3 days now. Even though I've deleted several "original quality" images. I'm out of space since I only have 17 gb in my account.

Go to https://mail.google.com/mail in your desktop browser, select All mail in the left column and go to the oldest 50 right-up. Then select and delete 50 etc. etc. until Januar 1, 2018 or even more recent.
Thereafter empty the Gmail-trash (also in the left column).
Ready.
Foto Photos you have to take a decision: if you persists on original quality without paying, you must download every week from https://photos.google.com to your computer and thereafter apply Recover storage on https://photos.google.com/settings to compress the content at Google to zero usage.
Then you safe forever without painfull deletions again and again. Because High Quality on the web is good for all normal applications because you now have the originals on disc for top applications (if ever needed).
That's all I can advice.
Not funny, but its is all for free you know.
Answer:
@all
This is a very frequent complaint: storage is recovered late after deleting files. The help says that it may take up to 48 hours, but many report that it is longer or even seems stuck.
You should first check what uses storage in https://one.google.com/storage
- When storage is mainly used by Drive you must delete files (or buy more storage).
On https://drive.google.com/drive/quota you can see which files use most storage in Drive.
- When storage is mainly used by Gmail, you should delete old or archived mail.
- When storage is mainly used by Photos, you can either delete, or (better) use "Recover storage" on https://photos.google.com/settings. That will convert (= compress) all photos to the free "High Quality". See https://support.google.com/photos/answer/6220791
If you want to keep the originals you can download them first.
On https://one.google.com/storage/management you can see which files use most storage.
Also: do not forget to empty the trash bin. But be careful: once emptied there is no way back. It is good to have a backup (on computer, harddisk, thumbdrives, other cloud servives) at all times.
Edit: in other threads I read that files the trash bin of Google Photos do not count for storage. Please reply when you can confirm this.
Answer:
Hi Guys,
This worked for me and my storage came down from 15 GB to 4GB and now I am also able to receive emails.
So here are the steps that I followed:
1. Deleted all promotional emails in bulk (Under promotion tab)
2. Deleted all social emails in bulk
This helped me reduce 500 mb space.
3. Then go to https://photos.google.com/settings and click on the recover storage button near the Buy button.
Post recovery, the storage was reduced to 4GB. :)
Hope this will work for you as well.

Hello there,
Thanks for posting in the Google Photos Support Community.
I understand and I'll be happy to help.

Amanda

Answer:
Thank you, PeteranDi That's an interesting idea but I have two questions:
1. Are you 1000% sure that GPhotos is smart enough to not upload the low-res thumbnails (as a dupe or replacing my hi-res ones) or create other issues?
I ask this because the last time I turned on iCloud, many of my videos stopped playing in GPhotos, at least from the device itself. I would get an "Unknown Error" but the videos still played via the web or on other devices. This problem resolved itself but only after several months.
The other problem I once observed is that I have seen duplicates in GPhotos and when I compared their sizes, they weren't the same, 30-300k vs 3Mb leading me to think that GPhotos was uploading my iCloud thumbnails.
I finally gave up trying to sort through the mess and swore I won't have both GPhotos and iCloud syncing at the same time (+ I'm aware that the GPhotos Free Up Space command WILL delete iCloud photos - unless that's disabled first.)
2. If I give iCloud another try, let the images upload and then turn off iCloud to get the message about local files will be deleted, won't that screw up GPhotos? Ie it didn't do its own clean-up?
And has iCloud changed in terms of when it removes local files? Ie not automatically but only as space gets tight? I remember activating my last 256gb iPad only to have iCloud proceed to attempt to download ALL my images (1.3 gb) and again filling my device up!
I truly hate iCloud. I just want the GPhotos Free Up Space to work for me!
Thank you, anyway!
Answer:
Hi Richard, I finally gave up trying to FREE UP SPACE in GPhotos and found another way, thanks to this cool guy at MacWorld Magazine: Chris Breen.
1. First, make sure you're fully synced with Google Photos
2. Now disable Syncing or Uninstall Google Photos altogether
3. Make sure iCloud is also disabled (besides, it simply sucks so who needs it).
4. Connect your iPhone to your Mac. Borrow or steal one if you don't have (be sure to return it, promise?)
5. Close ITunes or Photos if they open
6. Look for the Apple "Image Capture" app and launch it (This is the genius idea of Chris Breen!)
7. When it comes up, Select ALL NEW PHOTOs button, make sure DELETE after copying is CHECKED and go..
8. 8 Weeks later, check and hopefully your iPhone will be empty. Just kidding, won't take 8 weeks but it could take overnight or a few nights.. I would kick this off before going to sleep
9. Eventually your iPhone will be empty or a few corrupt files could be stuck on it.. Do a full reset of both iPhone/iPad and Mac.. And try again. I got 80% of my corrupt images back doing this.. I only lost 2-3 pictures out of the billion files I had.. No biggie
10. Now restart your phone one last time, re-install Google Photos or re-enable its syncing and go admire your PHONE STORAGE screen.
12. Establish a procedure to do this at least once a month, so you don't end up with too many photos for GPhotos to delete.. It's a lightweight when it comes to that but a Genius app when it comes to almost everything else.
11. You're very welcome. :-)
PS I wanted to mention that it took me a few days and import sessions because Image Capture would eventually abort due to bad files, after copying__K files files. The bad files were easy to spot when I would reconnect everything after resetting both Phone and Mac, they were typically the ones at the top of the image collection..
So I would bypass them manually and Select 5000-10000 photos at a time and do the Import and Delete routine.
ie Suppose you had 10 cat pictures and 1 dog picture at the top of your Image Capture screen. After the import, the cat pictures are gone (ie they were imported and deleted) but the dog picture was still there. So skip it and go down a few hundred pics and start there again, etc, slowly whittling your way down.)
I kept doing that until I was down to the 20 or so "bad" files. Got those down to only two after a few resets and transfers. And deleted those. Wham. All's good now..
Answer:
free up space works for me.
I had 13,223 items. When I used clean up space, it asked my permission and i granted it.
Then I saw a message displaying deleting 13,223...
Then that message disappeared and I check my photo I still see those pictures.
so I reboot my phone and repeated the "clean up space" steps for like 3 times.
now I can see there are only less than 60 pictures on my phone.
I think the reason it takes so long is that the "google photo app" needs to keep syncing and deleting the pictures to make sure this one is backed up, this one is not backed up...
Or if you can backup photos to your pc, then you can manually delete all photos from your phone.
done. this is more direct. but you need to connect your phone to your computer every time you want to back up your files. You might even need a tool to help you back up your files to pc.

====================End Question=====================
Question: Google photos loaded all my original photos, mac Photos not the edited ones how can I change this.
not edited
The problem is that we don't know how these edits were stored - perhaps not at all like in Picasa in the past. There you can save the edits per folder and then the edited version will be synced to https://drive.google.com/drive/computers but not to https://photos.google.com because that is a one-time upload.
It will become a large operation to correct this mistake and I will leave that to Peter (he will be happy :-)
But in meantime you can reply to explain how your edits are saved.
Answer:
Thank you Rinus (I think)
@Stephen, we need a bit more information, initially, were the originals uploaded followed by editing - edits do not sync.
Answer:
Hi
Thanks. In Apple Mac Photos you first import photos or they sync from iPhone etc.. Then you edit them, I.e. rotate, crop or enhance etc. Photos then stores both the original and the modified versions. When using google photo sync and back up there is the option to choose the Mac Photos library as its source. I expected it to load only the latest edited copy however it has loaded the original copy of all the photos in the library..
I am now trying another way, I set up a new account then exported the edited photos from Photos to a folder and have set up a sync and back up to that folder. That appears to be working but is not as ellegent solution as just syncing to Mac Photos.
So if successful I will delete photos from old account as they will be redundant. Any suggestions on how to remove photos from old google account easily.
I look forward to your thoughts.
Regards Steve
Answer:
@sma, unfortunately there are no easy methods in Google Photos. The designers did not account for users to deviate from the 'snap, backup, next photo' scenario.
One thing to note, if you are using Google to backup your photos, the original is the first upload. Subsequent edits are not synchronised. Edit and save as a new copy will upload the new copy.
Answer:
Thanks, it will still be good to have all photos backed up. I can redo editing you cannot replace a photo. That alone is a result.

Hello Emily,
Thanks for posting in the Google Photos Support Community.
Which application are you referring to? Is it the 'Backup and Sync tool'? If yes, the Backup and Sync tool is only used to upload photos and Videos to Google Photos/Drive.
However, if you're trying to download the backed up Google Photos photos back to your device and it's a huge amount of photos and videos to download, you can use google.com/takeout to export your data, you will have to extract the archive and manually transfer/download it to your device or external storage device.
You could use takeout via your mobile device as well, but you may have to source a program to decompress the archive and you also need to ensure you have enough space on the device to fit your entire library. By doing this, the photos from cloud will get downloaded to your phone.
But if it's few photos, you can also manually download them. here's how you can do so:
- Open the Google Photos app on your Android device.
- Sign in to it.
- Select the photo you want to download.
- Click on Download/Save to device.
Note: Quality of the download will depend on the quality they were uploaded in.
Keep me posted.

Hi Ramya Kurla,
To limit backup data usage:
- On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Photos app
.
- Tap Menu
Settings
Back up & sync.
- Under "Settings," tap Cell data usage
- Under "Daily limit for backup" choose how much data Google Photos can use when automatically backing up photos and videos.
If you can't see that option, please post your setting view's screenshot so that we can debug further. Please make sure no personal details are visible.
Answer:
I don't have this option either and it's actually the first time I've ever heard of it. I found a Google One support article talking about it. Do you have Google One? Do you see this option on another device, if so, what's the device?
Answer:
Actually, just found an article from the end of last year about this which refreshed my memory on it a little. It says "the initial rollout is also targeted at India with the possibility of expanding to a wider audience in the future". I haven't heard anything on this recently so I think it's still limited regions possibly. Where are you located?
Answer:
I've gotten a little more info on this. From what I understand, the ability to limit the data usage is only available if you're uploading in Original Quality, not High Quality.
First, see if changing the quality setting shows you this option.
If not, clear the app data. You can do this by going to Settings (for the OS not app) > Applications > Google Photos > Storage, then Clear Data. Clearing the data will essentially be a fresh install, the only thing lost will be your settings no actual data.
If you still have this issue when you have Original Quality selected after clearing the app data, please send feedback via the app. In your feedback, please provide consent for Google Photos to investigate your account for this issue and include #dailylimit when submitting feedback so the team can find your report to investigate the issue further.
In order to submit feedback to the Photos Team:
- Open the Google Photos app
- At the top left, touch or click the menu icon
> Help & Feedback.
- Touch Feedback.
Answer:
Hello Everyone,
I was also facing same issue in one plus 7T. You can upload the photos with mobile data with daily limit by using follow steps.
Steps to see Daily Upload Limit (Mobile Data):
- Update Google Photos App.
- Turn off Backup & Sync Option from settings menu.
- Turn on Backup & Sync option from Home Screen.
- Now, it will show you option for Daily Mobile Data Limit.
It will upload both photos and videos but I want to restrict videos being upload on google photos. Please let me know if anyone knows how to restrict videos being uploaded.

This used to work. It's no longer working. I want this fixed asap. What do I need to do to get some one to help with this. I have looked at the community forum and see many other people having the same problem and I don't see any confirmed resolution. How do I get this resolved?
Answer:
"What do I need to do to get some one to help with this."
I think that you should give more info on what exactly happens.
When you open a shared album, click 3-dots > Sharing options you can copy the link. That link should work for everyone, except when you blocked a person it does not work for that person when he/she is signed in to his/her Google account. But he/she can still see in an incognito window.
Answer:
I do what I have always done and has worked before. I go to Photos > Albums > select the 3 dots > select Share > select "Get link" > Copy the link and send it to the folks I am trying to share with. But they can't open the Album. They get an error indicating that the link is missing or album is deleted or something like that. I have tried sending the link through email, we chat, text message, but they can't open the link. I can open the album using the link on both my computer and my phone. I don't have anyone blocked.
I have also tried just selecting the persons name from my contacts list and sharing the album with them. But they never get any notice that the album has been shared. Nothing in Photos. No email.
Answer:

"I have also tried just selecting the persons name from my contacts list and sharing the album with them. But they never get any notice that the album has been shared. Nothing in Photos. No email."
It is known that this sometimes happens. The list may contain old addresses, addresses with typos, but also in other cases, for example when an address is used as recovery address in another Google account. It's not reliable and there is no warning that the mail is not delivered.

As a volunteer user trying to help I can only explain how things are supposed to work, and give some reasons why things sometimes do not work (like blocking someone accidentally), but when there are (temporary) glitches or bugs it's a different story.
- To share you can click 3-dots > Options and get and copy a link.
- Check whether that link works for you and/or in an incognito window.
Some signaled that their account was (temporarily) suspended. - When the link is OK check whether users block each other in https://myaccount.google.com/blocklist (both owner and invitee)
- If nothing works you can wait a day and try again. Some issues are temporary and do disappear.
- When the issues persist you can signal it here as detailed as possible. When more users signal the same issue there may be a bug that can be escalated.
Answer:
I figured out what the problem was I posted a link to my business website in my Google Plus profile and they suspended my profile temporarily they said I was spamming that's what I do for a living so I took the link down submitted it for review and it works again so I suggest everybody even though nobody uses Google Plus who has a problem like this go take a look and see if your profile is suspended because you won't be able to share even from your photo albums on your device until it's resolved but they did resolve it quickly once I figured it out let me know but they let me know when Google Plus and nobody uses Google Plus and nobody goes there if they would have sent me an email message I would have taken it down but I didn't realize I can't put a link to my business website on my personal profile without paying Google

I want to recover deleted videos from bin
Hi Preeti,
I’m sorry, it’s not possible to recover photos permanently deleted from the Google Photos Trash. However, you may install to your Android device a deleted photo recovery app https://play.google.com/store/search?q=recover%20deleted%20photos&c=apps and run a scan for anything to recover.
In addition I recommend that you contact the Google Drive support team to see if any deleted files may be recovered. Just open the Google Drive https://support.google.com/drive/?hl=en&authuser=0#topic=14940&contact=1 contact form, click Missing or deleted files, select a contact option, and be sure to tell them you permanently deleted files in Google Drive.

Answer:
Hi - this just happened to me, too!
Amanda - I did Procedure 1, but I x'd out of the page prematurely before all of my photos uploaded. Upon opening up the browser back up, I uploaded photos and I got the little notification popup that my photos had been added to the album. An hour later, I'm back on the Google Photos app on my desktop and only the latest photos I added are in the album and 1400 of my other photos are gone!!!
Answer:
Update: I'm scrolling through and it looks like my photos may still be in my library but lost the album tag. If this turns out to be how do I retrieve the 1400 photos without searching through thousands?
Answer:
I was trying to create an album within Google Photos. It took way too long to move a number of photos so i cancelled the process. Some photos were in the album. The next day, those images i had tried to move to an album were gone, as was the album.
My query is whether those images are "gone" because they're not on my phone, they're not on "google photos". I didn't delete them. I merely cancelled the "create an album process".

The gallery on my phone has an album for what's app photos (i.e photos others have shared with me) and an album for my photos (taken by the phone camera) . But when I open Google Photos on the computer all photos are mixed together. How do I separate them? Thank You
Answer:
Just try: type the letter WA in the searchbox to get these Whatsapp pictures together: then you can select them all and choose Archive under the 3 dots to get them hided from direct viewing between your own pictures.
Answer:
WhatsApp media is currently using nearly 10gig on my handset. Would be great if I could back them up and not have them mixed amongst my main photo collection.
Answer:
Completely area, it shoud be a different icon or way of separating it, it really frustrates me, it's more annoying now they removed the Drive sync, because I can't select them from Windows to remove them and put into a different folder.

I've tried to take all my photos from google photos and put them back on my normal camera roll, i got to 300 pictures until it said it had trouble saving. I thought if I selected fewer pictures it would work. It still didn't so I tried to do just one picture from 2017 and suddenly didn't even give me the option to save it. Is there anyway I can get all my photos back to my camera roll?

Hi. Not the ideal solution but works for me: you go on your Album. In the bottom right corner (desktop site) you should see a heart and your profile picture. Click on the heart an you will see the timeline of he album with the liked pictures. Click right on each of them and open in a new window each of them. Add them to another album. Here you go. Hope this can help
Answer:
go to the album, you'll see an activity button on the right side, next to add new photo. You can see the recent activities, liked photos and can choose them.

Thereafter go into that Archive via the 3 lines and then you can select them and then tap the + to create a new album for the Whatsapps. And you also can make an album of your own finest pictures - neatly edited of course.
I can't test, so I like to hear if this approach works - you have not much other options.

I later realized that whatsapp is backing up separately on it's own, so it wasn't just messy but unnecessary.
Anyway, searching for WA0000 will get you all the whatsapp related images and videos, so you can delete/archive/move them to clean up your account a little.

Welcome to the Google Photos Support Community.
I understand how important Google Photos is for you and I'll be happy to help. This seems to be more of a network issue.
In the meantime, could you please uninstall and reinstall the Google Photos app on your iOS device and login with the same Google Account to check if this sorts the issue?
Let me know how it goes.
Cheers,
Amanda

Hello Adi,
Welcome to the Google Photos Support Community.
The only way to create the album within Google Photos is by selecting the photos from the library. Here are a couple of ways, how to create albums in Google Photos:
- Procedure 1:
- Select the photos from the 'Photos' section in Google Photos.
- Click on the '+' symbol on the top right corner.
- Select Album.
- Select New Album.
- Name the album on the space provided.
- Click on the 'Tick' mark on the top left corner of the page to complete the creation.
- Procedure 2:
- Open Google Photos.
- Click on Albums.
- Click on 'Three dots icon' on the top right corner.
- Click on Albums (under Create new).
- Select the photos.
- Click on Create.
- Name the album on the space provided.
- Click on the 'Tick' mark on the top left corner of the page to complete the creation.
Here's a help article to know more about Stop sharing an album, commenting, & other sharing settings.

I went over my album and liked some of my photos (marked them in heart), where can I see those marked photos?
Thanks!
Answer:
I am afraid that the "copy & paste" reply by Amanda does not answer your question.
I tried to find a way to select the "liked" photos but I did not succeed. I noticed that you can see when a photo got a star (Favorite) but also that you cannot add a star when in a shared album. You can everywhere, also in albums created by Google under Things, Places, etc and in search results, but NOT in albums you create and share.
Edited: it seems that you can now also add stars in shared albums, but only when viewing the photo (large), not when selecting it in the thumbs view.

I read (written before the features were launched):
"The "like" feature will only appear on photos and albums that are shared. This is a way of giving feedback about photos. The "like" button will not appear on photos and albums that are not shared."
