Question: I opened photos app and found out that someone else uploading his photos on my photos app

Trying find out why someone else photos uploading to my photos?

Hi Rony,

The only way someone could do this is if they had access to your phone or computer, or if they had your username and password.

If you know that no one has access to your devices, I would highly recommend you follow instructions to Change Your Password on your account. This will prevent anyone else from uploading photos to your account.

Hope this helps.

Thanks,
Kyle

Answer:

Thanks but have one more question.  I had another phone that was with my Google abound on it, the phone was stolen long ago. Is it possible that the person who use the stolen phone used and than his photos came to my account? And can Google help me by deleeting my photos from the stolen phone?

Answer:

It could be possible if they stole your phone with your account on it, that is why we highly recommend that you follow instructions to Change Your Google Password

Also, if you had Find My Device enabled on your stolen phone, you can track it and wipe the device from here: https://www.google.com/android/find

Hope this helps!

The new ability to tag a photo as a favorite is a great new feature. I have just used it for the first time. However, there is a bug because not every tagged as favorite photo is showing up in the 'search favorites' virtual album. I have a screenshot (link showing four photos tagged favorite but not displaying in favorites page) showing the case where photos are missing on the favorites results page. Sharing this bug report in the hopes it can be fixed soon! thanks!

Answer:

Hi Craig,

Welcome to the Google Photos Help Community.

Thank you for bringing this to our attention. I've replicated this issue and see that there isn't any such bug. However, please check if you're able to view all photos marked as favorite on the Google Photos app on a different device?

In the meantime, let's try these steps on your browser:
Let me know how it goes.

Answer:

I have this same issue. I have favorited a number of photos; some on mobile (iOS) and some on web (PC Firefox).   Not all starred photos are showing up in the virtual "favorites" album on mobile; they show up fine on the web browser.  However, if I go to where those photos are in their custom albums I created  (both iOS and pc), you can see they all have stars on them.

I've logged out and back in on iOS, uninstalled google photos, rebooted the phone, and reinstalled the app, with no change.

Answer:

photos I tag with the "heart icon" in android app just shows in favorites album of photos app, not in browser. Also, photos I tag as favorite (star icon) in browser, are available only in favorite album shown in browser, not app

Answer:

@Georges
Probably an erroro: the hearts can be used for shared viewers who are allowed to comment and/or like and maybe they land in the Favorites album also. The stars are for the owners only.

Answer:

Sorry, I see them automatically expanded here in https://photos.google.com/archive as well as in the Android app. Can you give more info or add a screenshot ?

Question: How recover my deleted photos

Recover my deleted photos

Hi Jyothi,

Thanks for posting to the Google Photos Help Community.

To assist you better, could you please elaborate the post with a few more details and help me understand what is the exact issue so that I'll be able to address the issue with the best possible solution?

Incase, if you're referring to recover your photos deleted permanently from trash, unfortunately, there isn't any way to recover them. If not, please check if you see the photos/videos on trash as you can always recover photos/videos from the Google Photos app trash.

If you have back up & sync on, photos and videos you delete will stay in your trash for 60 days. You can recover deleted items by following the below steps:

  1. Open the Google Photos app .
  2. At the top left, tap Menu , then Trash .
  3. Touch and hold the photo or video you want to recover.
  4. At the top right, tap Restore . That photo or video will be restored to your Google Photos library and added back into any albums it was in.
Incase, if you're unable to restore from the Google Photos, the following things could be the reasons:
  1. Photos and Videos moved to trash more than 60 days ago.
  2. Photos and Videos moved to trash, then emptied your trash.
  3. Photos and Videos moved to trash permanently deleted from your trash.
If you don't find the photos/videos, I'd recommend you look for your photos/videos here, signing in with all your Google accounts if you have more than one:
I'd also recommend you contact the Google Drive support team as they can restore photos up to 21 days after deletion if the photos/videos are available in the Google Drive. You can click the "Missing or deleted files" entry of the contact form and request a phone call or any other option that works for you.

Check out these handy Help Center articles for more information on how to "See if you can restore deleted photos & videos" and "Find missing photos & videos".

    Keep me posted.

    Best,
    Sonya

Question: Message 'backup voorbereiden' blijft in beeld. Foto's worden niet geupload

    Hi Patrick,

Thanks for reaching out to the Google Photos Help Community.

I certainly understand the importance of being able to backup photos and videos. Please know that, if a photo or video didn't back up, it might be because:
    • Item size: Photos larger than 75MB or 100MP, videos larger than 2GB, and items smaller than 256 x 256 can't be backed up.
    • Slow network connection: Your device might have a slow or no network connection.
    • Unsupported file type: See which file types can be backed up.
You may also check your back up status here:
    1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Photos app .
    2. At the top:
      • If you see a number: It means there's still that many photos that haven't been backed up.
      • Back up is complete: If you see Upload complete .
      • "Waiting for Wi-Fi": Change your settings or connect to a Wi-Fi or mobile network. Tap the card to change your settings.
      • Back up is off: If you see Back up off . Tap to turn on back up.
You might also want to check this help center article for more information on My photos aren't backing up.

Question: How to automatically delete photos which have been synchronised from my computer to my Google Photos

When I use Google Photos for Android, it uploads all the photo's I take to my Google Photo's. There is a "Free up space" option in the settings that will delete all the photo's off of my 'phone after it has uploaded them, thus freeing up space.

I want to do exactly the same on my Windows PC. I've installed the "Backup and Sync" software from Google, which synchronises my photo's folder with my Google Photo's, which has the effect of uploading any pictures and videos I put into my photo's folder.

Once they're uploaded, I want them deleted off my computer, as I don't need them on there, and they're taking up space. Currently, Backup & Sync is working on a folder of 1600 videos. It's uploaded 10 so far, but there's no way I can manually delete them off my computer because I'd have to search through all 1600 to see which 10 they are.

How do I get the videos deleted once they're uploaded, but before the entire folder has been uploaded? 1600 videos will take weeks to upload and I want to free up space before then.

Essentially, I want the same "Free up space" option for my computer, or to be able to select in the Settings the option to delete as soon as it's uploaded successfully. This would also make startup a lot faster because currently it has to scan through all 1600 videos to see which ones it's already uploaded, and if I've changed any of them.

    Thanks.

    Answer:

I think your only option is to pause Backup and Sync making sure you have Don't delete from everywhere in your preferences then remove everything from the source folder which doesn't have a green tick. Resume the backup to finish off the uploaded videos and report Backup complete.

You should not delete any of the uploaded videos until you have checked they are working at full resolution and as a personal opinion I think it unwise to delete them. Buy a cheap USB pen drive and move them to it from the monitored folder, then move another batch in to get backed up. You could select some of the largest to reduce the space used

NOTE: Once uploaded and the originals deleted you do not have any backup, just a single copy online.

As far as automatic deletion is concerned, you can reach out to Google using the feedback option asking for that as a feature request

    Hi,

I'm trying to create an album that's owned by a team alias. This way, if I ask others to add this alias to their photos, all of the photos will pop up in the "shared" section. However, because the alias isn't necessarily an email account, I'm not sure if I'm able to do this. Is there a way to add the group alias as the name of the photos account without using my personal account to do so?

I've tried searching this, but since groups is an internal platform, I don't think it works. Could you please advise me on this?

    Answer:

Just for viewing only, you can send an album-link to some platform via normal mail.
But for coƶperation, you need to send to individuals with gmail-adresses only, else they can't add their own pictures to your album or type comments.
But because that always will create a garbage album, you better can ask the platform to send pictures to your adress via normal mail-attachments or via wetransfer. Then you are able to select suitable pictures, to improve them by some editing and especially take care for correct dating to get them in good order in your album with appropriate descriptions.
    Big job, so good luck.

You can select the menu three lines left on the left. There tap on your email. Then select the mail for which you want to turn off AutoBackup. And tap on
    — Remove active account
This will lead to the fact that there will be no AutoBackup in this account, but if you need it, you can always select this email address again and enable it. This way, you can select accounts for download: either  — Remove active account, or re-enable it

I would like to know if there is a way for me to adjust the time it takes Google Photos to download a photo I take on my iPhone. Sometimes I take photos or screenshots and will delete them in a couples hours or days and they are not worth saving on Google Photos. I am trying to avoid having to delete them from my phone and Google. And I also do not want to have both those photo systems synced to the point where if I delete a picture on my phone, it will delete on Google.

    Answer:

    Hello Hannah,

Welcome to the Google Photos Help Community.

I completely understand where you're coming from. However, there isn't any way to adjust the time it takes Google Photos to download a photo you take on your iPhone. If you feel some photos aren't worth saving to Google Photos, I'd suggest you turn off backup & sync option and manually backup only those photos which you want on Google Photos.

Also, just to let you know that once if the Photos and videos are backed up to the Google Photos then deleting the photos/videos from the Google Photos will also get deleted from your device.

Deleting them from your device gallery/iCloud wouldn't delete the backed up copy in the Google Photos/Cloud. However, if you delete them from the Google Photos/Cloud it will get deleted from your device/iCloud. Unfortunately, there isn't way to delete them.

    Hi Ingela,

Thanks for reaching out to the Google Photos Help Community.

Just to confirm, are you referring to move photos from one account to another? If so, you can move them to a different account. To change the account that you backed up your photos to, share your photo library with that account. Learn to share your Google Photos library with another account.

If that's not the case and you have multiple accounts, you can choose which account you're using and switch accounts on the Google Photos app:
    1. Open the Google Photos app.
    2. Tap Menu .
      • If you don't see the menu icon in the top left corner, tap back until you're on the app home screen.
    3. Look for the name and email address of the account you're using at the top of the screen.
    4. Tap the Down arrow .
    5. Tap the account you want to use or tap add account.
Let me know if you have any additional questions.

    Answer:

    Hi Ingela,

    Thanks for writing back.

If I understand you correctly, you have your old account connected to your device and all photos are getting backed up to your old account. Hence, to change this, you'd like to backup all photos and videos to your new account, correct? If so, you may add your new account on the Google app and select automatic backup on this new account. Here's how:
    1. Open the Google Photos app.
    2. Tap Menu .
      • If you don't see the menu icon in the top left corner, tap back until you're on the app home screen.
    3. Look for the name and email address of the account you're using at the top of the screen.
    4. Tap the Down arrow .
    5. Tap 'Add account' and add your new account (if you've already added your new account, you may select your new account).
Select the account to backup your photos and videos on:
    1. Open the Google Photos app.
    2. Go to Settings and click Backup & sync.
    3. Under 'Backup account', click on the email address and select your new account.
    4. This way all the photos and videos will now be backed up to your new account.
    Let me know the progress.

I was wondering if there is a way to create entirely separate folders for my photos. For example, I want my phone pictures completely separate from my digital camera photos. Something like Drive has. Another important aspect I was wondering if available is if I am able to select that folder to upload the photos directly to instead of them being jumbled together and me having to sort through and choose which ones go where. I would rather not transfer all the photos to the Drive app but I might be open to that option.

    Answer:

    Hello Hannah,

Welcome to the Google Photos Help Community.

Unfortunately, there isn't any way to create entirely separate folders for your photos and back them up as it is. In photos, what ever folder you backup will back them as individual photos and then you need to create folders/albums again.

However, we really appreciate leaving feedback for the development team as this is a best way to see new features and changes rolled out in future versions of Google Photos. If there are any other improvements or ideas you've about Google Photos, you can always leave them under Help & Feedback and they will reach the developers directly:
    1. Open the Google Photos app on a mobile device or go to photos.google.com using a computer.

The Google app can't work on iPhones very well, unless the app is hold open when having good wifi for an hour. Check in the general app-settings if you can allow for background operation and battery-saving off.

Just for viewing you better may use the browser on photos.google.com, but lowsy Safari always has 100 tabs open, so that may not work very well either. And even then you need to have good wifi to prevent using too much mobile-data when viewing Google Photos.

The appearing in automatic Google albums like the people-album can be delayed also, because it are older pictures in the timeline. It is much better to create thematic albums yourself.

In general: for Google Photos you should have an Android and a Windows-computer - on Apple you should stick to iCloud and a Macbook.

It sounds like your Google Account (or the account that Google Photos thinks you are using) is some type of Education, G Suites, or other account with a local Adminstrator.  You will need to figure out who the administrator is (possibly via the organization's website) and contact them.

Welcome to the Google Photos Help Community.

To assist you better, could you please confirm if you're trying to download all of your photos from the Google Photos on to your device? If yes, you will have to download each photo individually in order to save it to your phone, as there's no way to do a bulk download using the Google Photos app:
    • Sign in to the Google Photos app.
    • Select the photo you want to download.
    • Once the photo is open, click on the three dots icon.
    • Select Download.
Just a heads up: If the photo is already available in the phone, you won't see the download option.

For bulk download, you can download the photos from web (photos.google.com) by clicking on the "Download All" option. If you don't see the "Download All" option, please follow the below steps:
    • Log on to photos.google.com on your computer.
    • Sign in to it.
    • click on the Photos option on the left.
    • Select the photos you want to download. (Click the first photo in its upper left corner. The photo will now be selected. Now scroll down to the last photo, hold shift, and click the last photo. This will select all photos in your library).
    • On the top right corner, click on the three dots icon.
    • Click on Download. This will download all the photos that you've selected in zip format. You can then unzip them using any archive utility.

If the photos are in large numbers, could you please try downloading the photos through Google Takeout, be sure to unselect all products except Google Photos.

If that's not the case, could you please elaborate the post with a few more details so that I'll be able to address the issue with the best possible solution?

    Keep me posted.

    Best,
    Sonya

Question: Effect of local file renaming on sync?

I have a local folder for my photos on my hard drive which I sync to google photos using backup and sync. In this local folder, I put photos from various sources (DSLR, Gopro, smartphone, other peoples photos etc.), say from a holiday. I now want to re-name the files with a yymmdd_hhmm prefix to order them by the date and time taken, since depending on the device the files are named differently. The question now is: Will backup&sync treat these as "new" photos and start backing them up again? If this is the case, then in the future I will first collect all the images in a separate temporary folder, not synced, re-name the files and only afterwards move them over to my general photos folder. However, I still like to know the general behavior of backupo&sync regarding renaming files since there could be all sorts of reasons to do that with already synced files.

    Answer:

Hi Sebastion, this is a question best answered by yourself by testing a small batch. We don't get any details about the expected behaviour from Google, but my experience is that the name change will not be synced to, or create duplicates in Google Photos.  The problem is what happens in 3 or 6 months as the product is refined, or you decide to rearrange your folders, it is possible that they will be looked at as new photos uploaded again.

I would advise going with your future option of uploading after changes are complete, and I only make subsequent changes by moving photos to a temporary folder, which will delete online subject to preferences, then moving them back after the change. Remembering to re-add to any albums which is easily accomplished using the Recently added page.

Sorry I can't be more specific,

    Regards,
    Peter

I renamed my phone's Camera folder and Google Photos app is resyncing the whole folder.  I"m looking for a solution at the moment to stop syncing.  I guess I need to disable automatic back-up?

    Anybody has another solution?

    Thanks.

    Answer:

Even more problematic if you rename a folder, especially a folder with various subfolders and large files.  I am wondering if it will work to pause or quick the backup and sync and rename both locally and in google drive and then restart the sync?  Otherwise it seems like a simple renaming will create a lot of inefficiencies.

    Answer:

Rename your Folders or files through google drive web page, not on your pc/Mac. It will then only change the names and not force a complete folder upload.

Question: An update was installed yesterday. Now my google photo app just stops and does not backup photos.

Reinstall and update. Same issue app stops

    Hi Alexis,

Welcome to the Google Photos Help Community.

I certainly understand your concern as you're unable to access and backup photos. Let's try few steps here to see if they help:
    1. Close the Google Photos app and re-launch it.
    2. Sign out and sign back in to Google Photos with the same Google Account.
    3. Clear App data:
      • Open your device's Settings app (not the Google Settings app).
      • Touch Apps.
      • Select Google Photos in the list.
      • Touch Clear data.
    4. Uninstall Google Photos updates on your Android phone:
      • Visit the Google Play Store.
      • Open Google Photos.
      • Touch on Uninstall update.
    5. Restart your device.

    Hi there,

Welcome to the Google Photos Help Community.

To assist you better, could you please elaborate the post with a few more details and help me understand what is the exact issue so that I'll be able to address the issue with the best possible solution?

    Answer:

There is an album. I click the three vertical dots, then select :download all".  The download starts and does fine until about 3.3GB, then fails. Every single time with a "Network Error".  It isn't a drive space issue. It is a network issue.  As the download approaches the 3.3GB, it begins to slow down, then suddenly stops with the failure.  It is odd.

    Answer:

    @Rootless
How big is the album (number of items and GB)?
Did you already try to download in batches ?
To select multiple photos, see this link.

    Answer:

I'm unable to find anything that lists the number for photos or total size.  I would love to download it in batches, but manually selecting the photos, one by one, is not an option ( I realize multiple photos can be selected and downloaded in a group, but it still requires manual selection, one by one).

    Answer:

"I realize multiple photos can be selected, but it still requires manual selection, one by one"
Of course not. Did not you see the link in my post? It says:
    1. Select the first image:
      1. Hover over the first picture
      2. Click the white circle with check mark at the top-left corner of the photo
The circle will turn blue with a white check mark
    2. Scroll to the last picture you want to select. You can use the mouse wheel, arrows or Page Down keys, but you need to wait till the thumbnails are loaded.
    3. Press the "Shift" key and keep it pressed while selecting the last image.
It's OK to click on the last image when it turns blue as you hover over it, otherwise you must wait longer.
Now all pictures between the first and the last selected picture are selected.

    Answer:

Yes. There are no delimiters, labels, or markers (numbers, etc.), on the pictures.  There is no way to reference break-points or groupings (i.e. where did I leave off?) when attempting to download in batches.  Do you know of any?

I tried downloading again with a large grouping and it still fails at ~3.3GB.

    Answer:

"There is no way to reference break-points or groupings (i.e. where did I leave off?)"
I thought about the new option to add a star, but they obviously forgot (?) to implement that option in albums. You can give it a "Like" but that is not visible on the thumbnails. Finally you could add a comment, but then you must get a shareable link first and enable comments. It would try to note/remember which photo was the last selected.

Mohomed, deleted Photos are stored in Trash for up to 60 days, if you delete Photos again from trash, that's two times deletion.

Unfortunately, once Photos are deleted from trash there is no way to retrieve them back :(

    Hi!
I am from Hungary and I turned on face grouping several weeks ago, because I saw the option in settings. So far it doesn't seem to work, I have the people library and nothing is in it. I saw some news from august that it is coming to europe, but I can't find any dates. Is this only my issue, or is it not out yet?

    Thanks.

    Answer:

    Hi ATIX,

we've seen other reports of face grouping coming to some European countries, so Google is likely making the feature available there.

As for your issue, there are unfortunately no user-accessible options or settings other than toggling face grouping. Therefore, the only suggestions I have are to turn off and then on again face grouping, and upload more photos of people so that this hopefully triggers Google Photos to start scanning you library.
