Answer:

Hi Mihir,

I’m sorry, it’s not possible to recover photos permanently deleted from the Google Photos Trash. However, you may install to your Android device a deleted photo recovery app https://play.google.com/store/search?q=recover%20deleted%20photos&c=apps and run a scan for anything to recover.

In addition I recommend that you contact the Google Drive support team to see if any deleted files may be recovered. Just open the Google Drive https://support.google.com/drive/?hl=en&authuser=0#topic=14940&contact=1 contact form, click Missing or deleted files, select a contact option, and be sure to tell them you permanently deleted files in Google Drive.

To set your expectations, it may be too late to do anything about the deleted photos.

Question: How do o get photos that were backed up ona phone that got stolen and my password changed

I've tried logging into the gmail associated with that phone

Hi James Gardner,

Since your account is linked to your Google Photos, if you cannot access that account, there is no way to recover your Photos.

Please visit the Account community to discuss ways on how you can recover your account.

Answer:

If these photos were backed up they would be visible at photos.google.com or in the Google Photos app. Did you ever see the photos in another location, such as on the photos.google.com website or the app on another device?

Just because you can see photos by opening the Google Photos app, that doesn't necessarily mean they've been backed up. Google Photos also acts as a viewer for photos that are stored on your phone.

At the top of the Photos section of the app, it will tell you the status of your backup. Unfortunately it does not indicate the status of individual photos.

This indicates backup is pending (recent photos not yet backed up)
This indicates backup is complete

This indicates backup is disabled for this device or account

Could these photos also be backed up anywhere else- service provider backup (I know Verizon offers this), Dropbox, OneDrive, etc? I suggest looking in every possible place just in case.

Question: Why are you removing and blocking my photos, when more explicit photos are displayed on other sites?

Post/share photos.

Hi Nikolaeva,

You're storing these photos on Google's servers so they have the right to remove anything they deem offensive. I'm sure on the web there's worse stuff but that's up to the owners of those servers not Google. All Google do is link to those websites, they don't own them.

If you want to store anything like that you'd be better off having your own server and store them on something like Plex.

About a week or two ago, Photos can take a minute or two to actually load any pictures. I can still upload and use everything normally, but all the pictures are just gray boxes. I did a load test and there's a resource that takes over a minute to load ~42Kb. Once that clears, everything else displays normally and quickly. But it hangs on just that resource.

Anybody else having this problem?

Answer:

Loading in Google Photos Android App is much more slower. Adding one uploaded photo to an album can take 10 minutes. Because of that I prefer to use faster web browser.

Question: How to Fix my corrupted sd card

Hello Stephanie,

If reformatting doesn't work you will have to buy a new one. If you have photos on there please try to find a local specialist, or the device manufacturer support who can try to recover them,

Good Luck,
Peter

Answer:

Hello Stephanie,
I have some simple explanations as I have suffered from this before.
First, and most importantly, place your SD card into the Android phone that you utilized when saving documents pictures or videos with.  The reason for this is, often your SD card becomes Android specific once you have formatted it to an Android phone and when removing best card and placing it into a different Android phone tea SD card may or may not be recognized and therefore listed as corrupt.  In actuality if you simply place the SD card back into the original Android you may access the SD card and download all its contents. I find at times, that this can happen even if you formatted the SD card as being portable. Especially for SD cards then have been overused, old, worn, or transferred.

Secondly, the best technique 4 accessing or repairing a corrupt SD card is 2 play it into a laptop or PC and you can right-click on the item and you should be offered the choice to repair.  However this may or may not destroy all contents on the SD card. There are also the number of SD card repair programs they can fix your corruption problem on the web just be sure when utilizing these programs you are on a PC or laptop and not your phone. These programs work better in this format.

Hope I helped sincerely,
FS

My wife recently upgraded to Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 from Xiaomi Redmi Note 4.
Redmi Note 5 however is not able to backup photos to google cloud.
I have tried all options with clearing both cache and data for both Google Photos and Google Play services, readding Google account. I was so desparate that I've also tried factory reset, right after fresh initial setup without using any backup, I tried to take a photo and it also fails to upload.

Google Photos always first successfully gets (caches) photos from cloud, showing all cloud photos including the partner ones but once it shoud start backing up, it gets stuck at "Preparing to backup xx photos" why I try to force backup for some photos status is just stuck at "Uploading 1 photo" but nothing actually happens.

Tried to replicate the behaviour on old Redmi Note 4 thinking this could have something to do with new device under google account, so factory resetting that one and setting it from scratch, but backup works there flawlessly..

I'm out off options and wife is pretty upset right now.
Wondering whether this could be somehow related to hardware, but that sounds just unlikely.

Any ideas? It could really help to see app's logs honestly.

Answer:

Hi Adam,

that's indeed puzzling.

Is the device certified for Google Play? Did you unlock the bootloader or install a custom ROM? I suggest that you turn off any battery optimization options in the Android system settings or uninstall any system optimization tools or task managers that may interfere with Google Photos.

Answer:

Device is certified. It is not rooted and there is no custom ROM instaled. This is offical Global version of the phone. I have a confirmation from other Redmi Note 5 owner his photo backup is working just fine..
Also all other backup and google sync is working fine, this is solely related to photos backup only.

One option I haven't tried yet is to create new google account and try backup on that one from this device. But that's not really solution, just confirmation there might be something messed up with combination of the specific account and specific device..

I seeking out help from google or someone who has been able to recover photos the are gone after "freeing up space" i have tried every recovery method i can find online without success. I only uploaded these photos a few months ago and only "free'd up the space" a month or two ago. now they are gone. I know the exact date i uploaded them and i am wondering if someone from google could use the date and location to find them in a server or data base and get them back to me. PLEASE HELP!
Lauren

Answer:

Hi Lauren,

Free up space removes photos from your local device (such as your phone) that have been backed up to Google Photos. If you have used this, the photos will be in your Google Photos app.

I would recommend opening the app and looking at the month that the photos were taken. They will be uploaded according to that date.

You can find more information about the Free up space functionality on the Help Centre.

Answer:

Hi Kimmy thanks for responding! I have throughly reviewed by google photos on the computer and phone app multiple times and viewed the month/dates the photos were taken and uploaded ect. This is actually how I realized in the first place that there were only about 20 or so photos still present when there were previously around 50-100 photos previously , probably less than 1 month ago. I have thoroughly checked my trash, google drive ect and they are no where to be found since the last "free up space" a few weeks ago. I unfortunately deleted most of the images from my phone (the device I originally took them on) after I uploaded them to google photos in October.

I had issue with my gmail not getting any mail and then noticed that the google drive size reached 15 gb, 90% were google photos. Hence, deleted almost 10gb of photos from google photo but the size didnt decrease in google drive. The next day, i found these 10gb photos also got deleted from my gallery. Now, i lost almost all my photos due to google photos. Why did google photos deleted photos from my gallery without my consent ? How come the photos were in my gallery yesterday but got deleted next day ? Is it marketing strategy for google to but extra storage ? How to recover all my lost photos due this grave error by google photos ?

Answer:

Balaji, sorry for what happened.

Your deleted photos should be stored in trash. Check there, I believe you should be able to retrieve your photos from there.

Answer:

Nope.. it's not there.. while deleting the photos from google photos itself, it mentioned that google photos could not move them to trash as the size is huge and asked to delete them permanently..  why did google photos delete the pics from phone gallery ?

Answer:

That's unfortunate :(

On deletion, Google photos pops up a warning - Remove from Google account & Synced devices

Answer:

Its not unfortunate but my Stupitidy to trust google system. Thanks for letting me know that i made mistake synching with google acct. I will be careful with google and advise all my friends the same. Hardware backup is always the best.

Answer:

You perfectly can trust Google when you would have read before deleting carefully: see this link

First mistake: choosing original quality uploads which counts for storage. Then you could have expected this problem and for what quality application you did want to keep these originals when you don't want to pay for additional storage?

Second mistake: not understanding that the pictures you saw in the app, were the same as seen in your Gallery (you could have tested with a few bad ones).
If you would have applied the Free-up space option, then your Gallery gets empty and then you would have seen the pictures stored at Google in the app. Normally they are in background only unless you would have created albums, because these are at Google only.

Third mistake: not using the Recover storage button in the setting to get zero storage back because Google will compress all to High Quality which is good enough for all normal applications.

Fourth mistake: not making an additional backup on computer weekly by downloading straight from photos.google.com in your browser or just by connecting your phone with its usb-cable to pc.

There is a daily storm with "permanent deletors" here, so you are not alone.
However you can instruct your friends in the good way now.
But no Google here to get ashamed that they have been not clear enough perhaps.

Answer:

Thanks for your detailed reply but none of them going to help me now.

I did tried  deleting few pics in google photos and checked the gallery. It got deleted in google photos but not in gallery. After checking this only, i did deleted rest of the photos. But, the photos got deleted from gallery after few hours. I agree its my mistake that i didn't take further more cautionary steps before using google services rather trustung blindly. But, you could update your system to reflect the change between google photos and phone gallery immediately.

Please instruct the users in bold print rather in small print before they start using your google services. "Too big to fail" is all that comes to my mind after facing this issue.

Hello Pramod,

As soon as you cease making your monthly payments, your account reverts back to the basic 15GB limit. If at that point you already have more than 15GB in storage, you'll lose access to some of it. You'll also lose the ability to send and receive emails while you're over your new lower limit.

Uploaded photos

Hi Arjun Maru
They will be there as long as Google Photos exists, or your account. It should be understood that Google reserves the right to occasionally change the services and terms of service. If these terms of service are changed, Google will send you special alerts about this so that you can copy your files to yourself. But as long as the product "Google Photos" exists, or as long as your account exists, Google guarantees that your files will be in order.

Question: Why isn't facial grouping working?

Sometime in 2018, Google photos stopped grouping faces. I've tried restarting the feature, but it do…

Hi Itamar,

It may be that there is some corrupt data that is causing this issue. Could you please try the following steps in order:
  • Open your device's Settings app (not the Google Settings app).
  • Tap Apps and then Google Photos .
  • Tap Disable
  • Clear Cache and Data
  • Uninstall the app
  • Restart your phone
When your phone has restarted:
  • Open the Google Play store
  • Download Google Photos
  • On your Android device, open the Google Photos app .
  • Sign in to your Google Account.
  • Menu Menuand thenSettings and thenBack up & sync settings.
  • Turn on Back up & sync.
When you're ready, head back into the app and ensure the Face Grouping option is turned on.

Let us know how you go.

Answer:

Hi Itamar,

You can uninstall the updates from the app (after clearing the cache and data). Once this is done, you can re-install all the relevant updates. This is the equivalent of uninstalling the app if it's the core photos app on your phone.

And if the face grouping isn't working on your phone, this will reset the assistant.

Alternatively, have you tried viewing the face groups in your internet browser on a desktop/laptop? Is it working here?

Question: I deleted photos and videos parmanly I need

I need photos and videos

Hi Tamillan,

If you have back up & sync on, photos and videos you delete will stay in your trash for 60 days.
  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Photos app Photos.
  2. At the top left, tap Menu Menu and then Trash Trash.
  3. Touch and hold the photo or video you want to recover.
  4. At the bottom, tap Restore. The photo or video will be back:
    • In your phone
    • Into the "Photos" section of the app.
    • Into any albums it was in.
If you have deleted the photos from the Trash, then I'm sorry but you can't retrieve them. This is why you receive a warning when you delete from the Trash. Deleting from the Trash is permanent.

If you have Google Drive set up, you may be able to check if the photos are sitting in the Google Drive trash to be recovered.

Lastly, you could try an Android Data Recovery app that might be able to restore the files to from your phone. But I can't promise that it will work as they are all 3rd party apps.

Question: Cant find all my photos from few months ago with mom and grand daughter

All photos or videos specially the older photos my mom grand daughter

Hi Sandra,

Please review the following information in case there are any options you haven't yet tried.

1. Check your online account - photos.google.com
If your photos were successfully uploaded to your online Google Photos account they may be available there. Try visiting photos.google.com and searching for them. If you have more than one Google account, check all of them.

2. Check the trash - photos.google.com/trash
Once you delete photos from your Google Photos account, they're moved to Trash for the next 60 days. If you deleted them by mistake you can always restore them from the Trash folder within those 60 days. Here's the link explaining how to recover them from Trash. If you have more than one Google account, check the trash for all of them.

If you accessed the Trash and manually sent the photos for permanent deletion, or if the 60 days expired, there is no way to recover them from Google Photos

3. Review other options
  • if you previously used Picasa, visit picasaweb.google.com and search for your photos.
  • have you made any backups of the photos on your phone, camera, computer, or elsewhere?
  • there is a small chance that you can restore the photos using a recover deleted photos app (Android). I haven't used them myself so have no specific recommendations. There may well be more app options if you visit the appropriate app store and try other search terms. I don't see any similar apps on the iOS store, but you could check yourself.
  • you can contact the Google Drive support team to see if any deleted files may be recovered. Use the Google Drive contact form, click Missing or deleted files, select a contact option, and be sure to tell them you permanently deleted files in Google Drive.
  • If you ever shared the photos with anyone else, it's possible they may have a copy they could share back or send to you.

Good luck, and do post again if you need more detail on any of the above points.

I came to know that Google Photos are private and encrypted end to end. If that is the case why is google AI processing my images to find items and faces? Second question: Are they really encrypted coz google AI is reading them. So claiming to be encrypted is just a lie?

Answer:

Hi Ismail Fareed,

Photos and Videos stored in Google Photos are private, but not encrypted.

I think, you misunderstood Google Duo or some other Google service's photos with Google Photos.

Answer:

Ismail,

The pictures and videos you upload to Google Photos are private, meaning that only you can see them unless you intentionally and manually choose to share them. As for encryption, I don't think the images are specifically encrypted, but your connection to all Google properties uses HTTPS.

Regarding the AI processing and scanning for faces, that has nothing to do with encryption. The AI can keep your connection protected and your images private, yet still scan the images for recognizable items, landmarks, etc. The same goes for faces -- the AI is only scanning your pictures for faces that are seen multiple times.

So, no human being at Google or anywhere else is looking at all of your pictures for faces or items. That process is entirely automated, so your privacy is still completely protected. You can read Google's Privacy Policy for the company's specifics on this subject.

~ Greg

Answer:

Hi. Thanks for the answers. What about google drive? Are those files encrypted in the storage level? Can photos be read by AI that are stored in Google drive ?
Maybe I am asking in the wrong forum.

Answer:

Ismail Fareed,

As far as we know, Google Drive is also not encrypted. But I Google Drive doesn't have AI which read your photos.
You better ask Google Drive related question in https://support.google.com/drive to know more.

Once I was in the same situation, I was afraid of AI that read and group my Photos. After that I had to know this AI will do no extra thing other than just grouping my photos, I just started using it. Believe me you will like it one day.

Also Remember, Google Drive will take space from your 15GB  storage quota, even if you store your images. But in Google Photos if you chose High Quality, you have unlimited storage  space, so please choose wisely.

Question: Recover photo 2 year ago delete photo

I want to recover 2 year ago photo all delete i want recover.

Hi Shyam Kishore,
Once you delete them from the trash they are permanently deleted; they are only recoverable in 60 days if they are still in the trash. You can try a few options that might help recover some but not 100% guaranteed.
  • Contact the Google Drive team and say you want to recover files - click on the contact us option on this link.
  • You can try using a third party photo recovery app at this point to try to recover some of what was lost from your phone - just type photo recovery into the play store and see what options are available. I can't recommend any as haven't used one personally but some people do have success that way.

Hi NAVI UD,

Welcome to the Google Photos Help Forum.

We regret! Unfortunately if a photo is deleted from trash, it is permanently deleted. Therefore we cannot recover it.

Sorry that your photos are gone!

Answer:

There's nothing much we could do here unfortunately.

May be you could try any file recovery app. Not sure about it.

Photos I have stored in GP suddenly don't show up on my blog. 2 of my readers told me that they can't see the photos any more. And all my photo albums are SHARED.  Anyone has encountered the same issue?

Answer:

Angie,

Good morning. Can you describe the method you've used to add pictures from Google Photos to your blog?

At this time, there isn't a simple way to directly embed pictures from Google Photos to external sites. It's not as simple as just copying the URL. If that's what you did, it's no surprise that your readers are not seeing the images.

The best way to get your pictures into an external site or blog is to use Google Drive, not Google Photos. The sharing features of Google Photos were not designed for that kind of sharing...

~ Greg

Thank YOU so much for taking time to reply! I really appreciate it. I did just copy the image url to paste on my blogspot. Is there any better and surer way to do it?  I will definitely try google drive. Thanks, Greg!

Answer:

Hallo Greg,
the question might sound dumb, but how do I get a valid url from the pictures I uploaded to Google Drive that my readers can see it too?

Answer:

Angie,

To effectively do what you're trying to do, first you should make a new folder in Google Drive for your blog images. Then change the sharing options for the entire folder to "Anyone on the internet can find and view". This will also mean that anything else you put into that folder will have the same sharing setting

Add your pictures to that folder. Then right-click a picture and choose the "Get Link" option. You'll be given a link you can use that points directly to that file. But, this is not a link that will work for embedding your pictures. Instead, you need to cut out the file ID number and paste it into a properly formatted link instead.

For example, the regular sharing link will look like this:

https://drive.google.com/file/d/XXXXXXXXXXXXXX-XXXXXXXXXXXXX/view?usp=sharing

You need to cut out the file ID# (the numbers & letters between the "d" and "view" in bold above. Then paste that into the following URL:

https://drive.google.com/uc?export=view&id=XXXXXXXXXXXXXX-XXXXXXXXXXXXX

Using this method, you can embed any image, provided it's set to public viewable status in Drive. This really isn't a difficult process. Basically, you just grab the picture's file ID and paste it into the proper URL.

Let me know if you have more questions.

Regards,
~ Greg

Answer:

I also have used Google Photos and Picasa Web Albums for 8 years, embedding pictures into wordpress articles.

Around October 1st, 2019 some of them started to not show up and just had a blank box with a minus sign in them.  Some of the pictures that don't show up are in the same album as pictures that do show up.
