Typically if something is sent encrypted, you will need the decryption key to unlock it. Contact the sender to see if they can provide the information needed or send an image that is not protected. This is not something the Photos Forum can assist with.

If by encrypted, someone sent you an image link via Google Photos, they may need to re-enable sharing of the image, or if they have deleted or blocked you from the file, they may need to add you back or send a new link.

You can simply upload the whole batch again, which will normally solve the issue when the photo was skipped for no good reason. Already uploaded photos should not upload again.

But if there is a good reason, for example one of the photos was already uploaded, that will not help. Then you can for example add in smaller batches till you find where the problem is.

To find already added uploaded photos:

Create a new album in https://photos.google.com/albums
Upload all photos again to the album
Now all photos should be in the album, also the one that was already uploaded (but did not upload again).

I have a vast collection of Photos stored in Google Photos, dating back to 2001. These early photos, as you can imagine, were taken on an early digital camera and were just initially stored on my PC in folders with the year in the title, but later uploaded with Picasa. I use Backup & Sync to sync these photos to my PC along with my Google Drive files.

I recently noticed that some of my photos have the wrong EXIF data, so I have started reviewing all the photos. I edited the EXIF data of 3 photos, but the photos have not synced the change in data, they still show the wrong date/time so therefore appear in the wrong Google Photos year folder.

Is this expected behaviour? Seems a little strange if it is. If not, what am I doing wrong?

The purpose of the backup to PC is so that I always have a copy of my photos with me and as a tertiary backup to Google Photos and Dropbox. I'd expect it to work similar to Dropbox, where I sync and any changes to the photos are synced also.

On the Sony laptop I can instantly load my google photos and go to an album that contains 341 photos and instantly see the images. On the Dell laptop I go to google photos app and it only load a few photos and the remaining images are empty frames. This laptop (Dell) works and loads google photos perfectly at Starbucks and a friend's home. I have cleared the cache, I have uninstalled and reinstalled chrome, I have updated my WiFi device drivers, I have updated the firmware on my home router and restarted the router, I have removed McAfee, I have tried it on my home 5G and 2.4 G network, and both fail to load google photos. I called Mountain View Support and confirmed that on my working laptop (Sony) it works perfectly with IE and Chrome. I tried it on my non working laptop (Dell) and it fails on chrome and IE. It works fine on my iphone app displaying the pictures. Help? Thanks for all you thoughts and ideas....this is really a weird bug!

But you also can do what normally should be done: work with your RAWs on desktop and use a backup-disc to store the originals. But export selected edits as good quality jpg's which can be uploaded to Google to create a portfolio in the cloud and not a backup primarily.

However: Google Photos hardly is suitable for public showbusiness unless by sharing via Facebook :-)

My thanks to Barry Allen and Rinus Alewijnse. It's my first attempt at shooting and editing RAW so still very much a beginner. Wanted not to loose original RAW files, easily keep track of edits and minimise space and clutter on my hard drive. Clearly Google's not going to help here, nor do I find my Luminar3 intuitively or perhaps even actually as helpful as I would like. ON1 now seems to provide simpler more intelligible ways of storing, finding, editing, exporting and tracing images; as well as being a very powerful versatile editing suite. With its greater, clearer options; I think I'll find it easier to do what you suggest: send ( or is it keep) original RAW images to my D or external hard drive, then good quality jpg's to the cloud. Incidentally, have just replaced my G80 with the G9, which I see also isn't supported. Once more, thanks for your help.

Hi Dr. Eleanor,

I don't have a directy answer about the USB; another member may chime in here.

However, if you are using Google Photos to backup and sync your images, use the app option to Free up space.

1. Make sure you are connected to Wifi

2. Open Google Photos > Left Menu > Settings > Backup and Sync. Make sure that is turned on (toggle icon will be blue) Wait for any backups to finish. You should see an indicator in the main photos stream view at the top right of Google Photos. Once backup is complete. Go to next step.

3. Go back to Google Photos > Select Left menu > Select: Free up space

4. Read any pop up message and follow directions.

Google Photos will then check to see what images are backed up on Google servers and then let the applicaiton remove images from your phone's local phone storage that it considers to be backed up.

DO NOT manually delete images to free up space as you run the risk of syncing the deletion with your online backup. ONLY use the Free up space option in the left menu.

Sharing a Google Photos library is a way to give someone the possibility to view all the photos on your account, with the option to add them to their own library. That option is meant to be used by 2 partners and has a few limitations:

The most important limitation is that, when you share the library with another account, both accounts cannot share with anyone else.
When adding photos to the library of the other account, they are merged with the own photos and cannot easily be separated or removed again.
Albums created in the first account are NOT shared, just the photos in the library

Slide a photo up to see its info, you will see the People section. You can manually add a face there. You only need to do it ONCE (one face on one photo), it will trigger face recognition again. After hours, you will get updated faces.

Use this trick to remove wrong/duplicate faces and force the app rescan the photos.

See what I get now, all the faces, yay!

By the way, your method can only be tried on a smartphone app, because on the web version they recently changed the layout and added a useful search feature, but ... the + button needed to create a new face has now simply disappeared !!!

You moved it to trash more than 60 days ago.

In addition I recommend that you contact the Google Drive support team to see if any deleted files may be recovered. Just open the Google Drive https://support.google.com/drive/?hl=en&authuser=0#topic=14940&contact=1 contact form, click Missing or deleted files, select a contact option, and be sure to tell them you permanently deleted files in Google Drive.
