Why on earth has photos suddenly started playing videos without asking? How do I switch this extremely annoying feature off? No competent developer would make the assumption that users want videos to auto play. If I can't switch it off please suggest a different photo app I can use.

Yeah, it's safe to remove Photos from Google drive without worrying about it being deleted from Google Photos. It's separated now
Answer:
You always could have deleted the optional GP-folder in Drive without causing losses at Photos.
But it takes no storage in your account, so there is no good reason for deleting because these folders can be more easily synced to computer for having a secundary backup until July 2019.
That can be done via the Drive-section in the Backup & Sync app.
If ready, the app can be stopped and then the GP-folder can be deleted (also from trash on Drive).

I used to use Picasa to upload selected photos to my Google account for sharing (I take loads of photos and only a small percentage make their way to my web albums). Picasa used to be great - it looked at folders and allowed me to select photos as I was going through them an then upload to an album (that defaulted to the folder name, though I could change it).
Is there only me that thinks this is useful to have - I don't really want to upload ALL my photos from a trip to Google nor do I want to spend hours doing it. The web backup is woefully poor (like something to upload to the web from the late 90s) and don't even get me started on the abomination that is Google Backup and Sync - It doesn't cater for backing up from files on a drive that isn't always connected, nor really for one off uploads.
Oh, and on my PC it fails more times than it works (yes, I've checked the usual and they are all fine).
All I wanted was a simple way of uploading photos.
Uploading to Google Photos is rubbish - I can't even create an album and then upload photos (from different days - though all one folder) into it - I have to upload the photos, then create the album, then select the photos I want to put in it.
Google has some of the brightest minds on the planet working for it yet in some areas seems sadly lacking...
...or is it just me?
D.
Answer:
There is a simple way, just because you don't want everything like most people. So when you select the (edited) pics you want share via Google Photos, just press Export at the bottom, select the uploadsize (in Picasa it was 1600px) and quality (automatic is okay) and if movies are included, select that they will be exported at full size. Then start export and upload the exported files directly into https://photos.google.com and when the uploading is completed, you can create a new (shared) album or add to an existing album.

Created movies are choppy, lagy, not smooth. It looks like frames are being dropped. One can see it when watching them online or after downloading as well (on Android phone or on Linux). The source movies are OK.

That's all.
PS: you also can upload full size now (much slower of course, but that maybe not a problem for you), because having free storage is determined by your selection at https://photos.google.com/settings and not by Picasa anymore.
PS: don't use Backup & Sync in combination with Picasa.
Answer:
Dave,
To start with: it's not just you. But it's not that difficult to continue using Picasa and upload manually. I recommend the following workflow:
- Continue using Picasa for
- Local organizing and editing
- Renaming in the order you want (to keep the order if someone downloads the album)
- Add Captions when wanted (adding them in Google Photos does not add them to the photo: they are lost when downloading the album)
- Change the date, especially for old (scanned) photos to get them in the correct order in Photos
- Upload photos you want in Google Photos manually
- get an edited copy by "Save" or "Export" ("Export" automatically gets the exported folder in Windows Explorer after exporting).
- Upload manually:
- Drag & drop selected photos to https://photos.google.com/ or use the UPLOAD button in https://photos.google.com/. Immediately after the upload you are prompted to add the photos to a new or existing album
- or drag & drop directly into an existing album or the "Add photos" icon in an album
"I don't really want to upload ALL my photos from a trip to Google nor do I want to spend hours doing it."
There is no need when you adapt your workflow.
"I can't even create an album and then upload photos"
You can with a little creativity:
- Upload one photo and add it to a new album
- Drag & drop the remaining photos in the album
Answer:
Sorry guys, just realised that though I thought I had replied from my phone, the reply hadn't actually been submitted.
I appreciate the methods you suggest and can work with them to some degree but using Export in Picasa seems a little overkill as it creates duplicate files on my HDD which take up space (I know I can delete after uploading) - it all just seems a little ham-fisted to do something which was real easy to do before.
Cheers
Answer:
You have no choice Dave and using some temporary space on your HDD is no argument.
Else you need to save your edits and then your originals go into a hided folder.

Answer:
@Peter
We can't help that you still are cc (computer challenged) after so many years and we can't prevent that Google does ugly things and they have no simpler alternative either.
But here I have a printable document which explains the method step-by-step: Picasa-upload
Written for Windows, but that will not differ very much - unless you also can blame Apple for being abnormal :-)
If you did shuffle your picture-order in Picasa, you will get into troubles on Google Photos now because they will get uploaded chronologically. You can correct that order manually via Edit album under its 3 famous dots, but that will be a burden unless for a few small corrections. So do forget about: the people viewing don't even know that.
I am sorry, but we can hardly do more for keeping the old Picasa-users running.
Good luck

Answer:
Hello Amanda,
i need to recover my photos from google photos but the thing is i cant see any photo in my trash.so is there any way that i can recover my those photos which are not in trash as well anymore
Answer:
Hello Muhammad,
Thanks for writing back.
It can be possible that the photos weren't uploaded successfully to Google Photos (cloud) and also make sure you're logged in to Google Photos with the same Google Account that you used during the backup. Photos/videos that are not synced or backed up, will still appear in Google Photos and will have this icon
(which means not synced/backed up) or some photos/videos will also show up with the two arrows in a circle mean backup is in progress.
Once the upload is complete there will be no icon on any photos/videos. Often, many of us misinterpret that they are all backed up because the photos/videos show up in Google Photos and we over see the icons on each photo/video. If the photos/videos weren't backed up they cannot be deleted from the Google Photos library nor Trash.
In case, you are uploading a large amount of data (photos/videos), please know that it might take 24-48 hours for the photos and videos to sync across all devices. Please ensure to have 'Backup & sync' enabled on the Google Photos settings while you're backing up your photos and videos. To check is the content is backed up, login in to photos.google.com to checked for your backed up photos and videos.
However, if you're sure they were backed up, I recommend you looking for your video here:
- photos.google.com.
- photos.google.com/trash.
- picasaweb.google.com.
- drive.google.com (under Google Photos).
If a photo/s is deleted from Google Photos, it would go to Trash/Bin for the next 60 days (after deletion). Unfortunately, if the photos aren't found in Trash or deleted from Trash, I'm afraid, you might not find them else where to recover them because Trash is the last resort to retrieve your lost/deleted photos.
Meanwhile, also try giving the below steps a try once again in a sequence to help resolve the issue:
- Close the Google Photos app and re-launch it.
- Sign out and sign back in to Google Photos with the same Google Account.
- Clear App data:
- Open your device's Settings app (not the Google Settings app).
- Touch Apps.
- Select Google Photos in the list.
- Touch Clear data.
- Update the Google Photos app on your Android phone:
- Visit the Google Play Store.
- Open Google Photos.
- Touch on Update.
Let me know how it goes.
Best,
Amanda

Or on different computers?

I do think that Google Photos is created for personal use and sharing with family & friends.
So Google may have unknown limits for uploads per account per day.
The only thing I can advice is to moderate the network usage under the accountssettings in the app.
Then they can left running the whole day without killing your internet for other tasks.
I have no experience with Task-managers, but I don't have good feelings about killing a backup-app that way.
No Google here - just poor volunteers.

Thanks Rinus,
Although I haven't been able to find out the correct syntax for the task scheduler, I am now leaving the backup to run all the time now, with lowered bandwidth use. I'm not sure the best speed to choose, but I'll tweak it a little util I find a fast speed that still allows my internet use to feel unrestricted.

Meanwhile, please uninstall and reinstall the Google Photos app on your iOS device and login with the same Google Account to check if this sorts the issue.
Let me know how it goes.
Best,
Amanda

Created movies are choppy, lagy, not smooth. It looks like frames are being dropped. One can see it when watching them online or after downloading as well (on Android phone or on Linux). The source movies are OK.
Examples are here:
https://photos.app.goo.gl/LTtHsABHggejApgs8
(three sources and one choppy video created)
The sources were uploaded with "High resolution" option (not original) and are 1920x1080@30 (Video: H.264 / AVC, 9237 kbps; Audio: MPEG-4 AAC, mono, 44100 Hz, 96 kbps).

You can see there that these sources (later called "FullHD faulty sources") are nice and smooth. They are just OK. However end movie created by Google Photos drops frames, has jumps, lags... I am not sure how to call it.
In the same time movies created purely from videos in UHD size (30 fps) on Galaxy S6 are okay.

Movies created from mixed videos (so the "FullHD faulty sources" and Galaxy S6) are mixed - parts coming from S6 are okay and parts from "FullHD faulty sources" are laggy/choppy again.
I tested two different devices making FullHD videos - Android phone and some action camera. Google Photos is creating choppy movies from both of them.

Clearing App data caused that all my Google Pictures are now duplicated. Seriously. All images from last year - that's pretty a lot - got second copy in Google Photos. That's not an advice I would expect...
Application is updated to latest available (I wrote the version number in previous post)...
Answer:
Hello Krzysztof,
Thanks for writing back.
Google Photos has identical duplicate detection, where if you have uploaded photos to Google Photos already, it will not re-upload the same photo (each photo file has a unique "Hash" that allows us to determine this).
Hence, Google Photos avoids uploading duplicates, when different upload methods or devices are used, as long as the photos aren't edited. There is no easy way to remove duplicates, but some of the following may help:
- You can delete duplicates manually, for example in https://photos.google.com/ where they should be next to each other.
- The problem is however which one to delete:
- one photo may be edited, the other not,
- one photo may be in an album, the other not.
- When the upload dates are different (for example when you uploaded long ago via Picasa, and now again using the Desktop uploader). It may be easier to delete the duplicates in https://photos.google.com/search/_tra_ where they are sorted by upload date.
- There are more ways to get a useful search result, for example the device from which they are uploaded.
- See https://sites.google.com/site/picasaresources/Home/Picasa-FAQ/google-photos-1/how-to/how-to-search-for-photos
- Since very recently it is possible to delete photos directly from an album. Go to "More options" (3-dots icon), and use "Move to trash"
- When you uploaded in the free "High Quality" and have your photos in albums, it may be wiser to simply ignore the duplicates in the library.
It does take approximately 24-48 hours for the photos and videos to sync across all devices. Please ensure to have 'Backup & sync' enabled on the Google Photos settings while you're backing up your photos and videos. It's possible that Google Photos is merely scanning your library again, the scan will take some time, but it shouldn't re-upload the photos entirely as duplicates. The app may look like it's doing this but it's actually doing a re-scan of the photos.
Keep me posted.
Regards,
Amanda

Almost all my photos where taken in one of the following conditions:
- A non pixel device which took an image and the setting was to backup with high quality in order not to be counted against the quota
- A pixel device which took an image and the setting was to backup with original quality, and since this is a pixel device it shouldn't be counted against the quota
- Sync photos with a partner, which were take by one of the above options as well, and where not deleted and the partner didn't stopped the sync *
but still I have around ~12GB of used storage of photos only
Having said that, I'm sure that there are few photos which have been saved with the original quality and weren't taken with a Pixel device, and some that were deleted by my partner. But I'm sure it is not ~12 GB worth.
My partner is suffering from the same problem.
So my question is, what takes 12 GB of my quota?
I think the following data might help identify the problem:
I'm aware for the Recover storage option, but I wouldn't like to reduce my photos resolutions if I don't have to. Buying a Pixel phone should have assured me that.
Google is encouraging using the option below, and after 2-3 months of talk with the Drive time, they couldn't give me any information about the matter, and they referred me here.

Answer:
Unfortunately Pixel support have not done you any favours directing you to the Google Photos Community as we are a team of volunteers with no direct access to Google Photos support. Our role is geared around sharing experience and we have never been able to provide a fix for this issue and most of the points we have picked up have been adequately covered comprehensively by yourself.
The only other things picked up from the Pixel forum are:
"Free storage only applies to photos uploaded from the Pixel by the primary account holder and sometimes a user's previous device is still registered, if you go to https://myaccount.google.com/device-activity to see if you have any old devices registered against the primary email, if so remove them"
Even if they are in use I would recommend removing them for now as they can be used again later.
"Free storage may not apply to Manual backup as with the option disabled the settings may be overridden and default to the web settings"
Why Pixel support can't interrogate your account to determine the primary account I just don't know, or even internally raise a ticket with Google Photos if they believe it is in their area.
Please let us know if you resolve the issue so we can share with other users.
Regards,
Peter

Unfortunately, once Photos are deleted from trash there is no way to retrieve them back :(

Hi Harita,
Please review the following information in case there are any options you haven't yet tried.
1. Check your online account - photos.google.com
If your photos were successfully uploaded to your online Google Photos account they may be available there. Try visiting photos.google.com and searching for them. If you have more than one Google account, check all of them.
2. Check the trash - photos.google.com/trash
Once you delete photos from your Google Photos account, they're moved to Trash for the next 60 days. If you deleted them by mistake you can always restore them from the Trash folder within those 60 days. Here's the link explaining how to recover them from Trash. If you have more than one Google account, check the trash for all of them.
If you accessed the Trash and manually sent the photos for permanent deletion, or if the 60 days expired, there is no way to recover them from Google Photos.
3. Review other options
- if you previously used Picasa, visit picasaweb.google.com and search for your photos.
- have you made any backups of the photos on your phone, camera, computer, or elsewhere?
- there is a small chance that you can restore the photos using a recover deleted photos app (Android). I haven't used them myself so have no specific recommendations. There may well be more app options if you visit the appropriate app store and try other search terms. I don't see any similar apps on the iOS store, but you could check yourself.
- you can contact the Google Drive support team to see if any deleted files may be recovered. Use the Google Drive contact form, click Missing or deleted files, select a contact option, and be sure to tell them you permanently deleted files in Google Drive.
- If you ever shared the photos with anyone else, it's possible they may have a copy they could share back or send to you.
Good luck, and do post again if you need more detail on any of the above points.

Hello all,
Welcome to the Google Photos Support Community.
@Sandie - Thanks for pitching in to help.
@Harita - If you've deleted them from Google Photos and want to restore them, please know that photos/videos deleted from the Google Photos library, goes to the Trash for the next 60 days. So, in case, you deleted it by mistake you can always restore it from Trash folder within those 60 days (post deletion). But, if you don't find it in Trash, probably it must have been deleted more that 60 days ago. Unfortunately, restoring your lost/deleted photos and videos from Trash is the last resort.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
Regards,
Amanda

.
- Select Settings
Back up & sync.
- Tap "Back up & sync" on or off.
- Open the iOS settings app
tap Privacy
Photos.
- Turn on Google Photos.
If you see a message asking to allow the app to access your photos:
Things to keep in mind about this setting:
- Changing backup settings will affect all apps that use Back up & sync, such as Google Drive.
- If you have Back up & sync on, deleting the Google Photos app from your device will not turn it off. To turn off Back up & sync, follow the instructions above.
Here's a useful help article to know about backing up photos and videos to Google Photos.
If no, keep me posted.

Question: Is tagging photos on the horizon? Seem not as its been huge request for years. Please why?
Tagging photos?
Depends what you mean with tagging, but for normal keywords Google Photos has no facilities. And even if these tags are added in your software before uploading, Google Photos does not show them and can't search on them.
Of course I can say: just send a feedback, but basically Google is not interested simply because just a few people in the world do understand their importance.
So forget about, but you can add a few important words into your captions (you can do that on Google Photos also), because these words will be found.
