The photos assistant keeps trying to make an album called weekend at "someplace". This time I don't want it so dismissed it from the suggestions, but photos still keeps trying to make the exact same album about 3 to 4 times a day.

Answer:

Hi Sean,

I suggest that you turn off the Assistant creation options in the Google Photos app under Settings > Assistant cards. Be sure to turn off all options.

My husband and I each upload to icloud on our phones. We download originals to our Mac. I want to also now upload full resolution photos to Google Photos. I have purchased stoage with Google. We are going to be uploading to the same Google account set up on our two iphones. I have read this post so I know that it first requests the original photo from iCloud then uploads the original photo to Google:

https://support.google.com/photos/thread/13552427?hl=en

1. If we both have the same picture in our iCloud library or duplicates for other reasons (for example if I sent to him and he saved it in low resolution), when he uploads to Google and I upload to Google which one is stored? Are both stored? Or my high resolution one or his lower resolution one?

2. Is there any way to delete one picture from Google and have it auto delete from iCloud (or vise versa)?

Answer:

@Layla33

1) Google Photos does not manage photo files by name, but by a unique ID created based on the hash value of the file, and it never has same ID files in duplicate. So, the photo having the same ID as that already existed in the cloud Google Photos will not to be uploaded.
For example, if you sent to him and he saved it in low resolution, the low resolution photo would be uploaded to Google Photos as a different photo because its ID was changed when he saved it in low resolution. Resulting you can see in the Google Photos both the original and low resolution.
However, the two will not be shown side by side on the location of the shooting date, because the low resolution photo will lose commonly the Exif shooting date and Google Photos will use the date he saved in the low resolution as a timestamp on the cloud.

2) Google Photos app for iPhone can influence both the cloud of Google Photos and the iCloud via iOS when you delete one picture by tapping a trash icon of the app.
However, when you delete one picture on the web by accessing Google Photos (https://photos.google.com/), its action will not push to Google Photos app for iPhone. When you delete one picture by using the Photos app preinstalled on the iPhone, it will influence only the iCloud.

Peter said:
This isn't necessarily the case, it depends how the photo was saved. If it was saved from Google Photos the resolution would not be changed for >16MP photos, but compression may change it from Original to High Quality  which would make the photo unique according to the hash value. It would be unusual for the Exif date to be changed.

Peter said
The deletion would be pushed to the Google Photos app on the iPhone

Best to try the full scenario with a test photo to see exactly whta happens.

Answer:

@Peter
You misunderstood what she and I stated.

1) I supposed the situation that she sent a photo by another app and he saved it in low resolution.
When we send a photo with low resolution via another app, EXIF information could be automatically deleted, depending on the app.
Why I supposed such as situation, that is because they have not yet uploaded a photo to Google Photos and they asked as follows: When he uploads to Google and I upload to Google which one is stored? Are both stored? Or my high resolution one or his lower resolution one?

She is going to be uploading to the same Google account set up on our two iPhones, so her concerns is not about passing and receiving low-resolution photos compressed with Google Photos. If she was thinking to send to him a photo compressed with Google Photos, there would be no questions like this.
Because they use Google Photos with the same account, the photos on Google Photos are shared from the beginning and she doesn't need to send them to him.

Nevertheless, Peter is talking about Google Photos compression, which is confusing. Peter seems unable to read the meaning of what she is writing.
Unfortunately, I feel almost Experts have no enough insight because it's likely that Google's selection criteria for Expert are based on only the number of posts, not the quality of the posts.

2) Ok, I made a mistake the definition of "push" in using the word.
When you delete one picture on the web, it is not deleted from iCloud, even though the deletion would be just pushed to the Google Photos app on the iPhone. That push cannot automatically delete a photo saved on IOS device, if not on Android.
However, if you open the Google Photos app on your IOS device after deleting it, the assistant screen will show that the photo has been deleted from other devices, so do not inadvertently tap "Delete from this device".

Answer:

@BC

Thank you for admitting you made a mistake with 2)

We will have to hear what Layla says regarding 1)
My thought was that Layla was referring to High Quality photos rather than photos with a different resolution which refers to pixel dimensions.

Answer:

Google will realize its the same picture and not store it again as a duplicate, even if it is uploaded from anyway. Please report if you see different behavior.

You can understand the behavior if you try to upload a same picture to the web page (https://photos.google.com/) via browser.
Your browser will indicate the uploading progress in the left-bottom corner, showing it calculates the unique ID in the first step of preparing before uploading at the first time, then running to upload in the next step.
When you try to upload a same picture at the 2nd time, it calculates the unique ID in the first preparing step, but skips uploading in the next step.

I copy and paste my first answer, since this is going back to your original question.
1) Google Photos does not manage photo files by name, but by a unique ID created based on the hash value of the file, and it never has same ID files in duplicate. So, the photo having the same ID as that already existed in the cloud Google Photos will not to be uploaded.

Answer:

@Layla33

Usually, you can sync them with the Google Photos via Backup & Sync tool for a PC when you have a ton of pictures on an external drive. In that case, you should choose each folder to sync and Google's sync app can sync the folder contents regardless whether they have already been imported into iphotos. When you import them into iphotos, if you will have iphotos manage multi library and will import the folder as another one separated from the current iphoto library, you don't have to worry which sync is first. However, if you are going to move the folder to merge them with your current iphoto library, the sync for Google should be later. And if your Mac is always synced with the cloud, those pictures will be uploaded to Google Photos via the Google Photos app on your iPhone.
I do not know the current situation of your Mac and iPhone so I cannot answer more details, please grasp the situation yourself and judge.

Hi Ashley,

I’m sorry, it’s not possible to recover photos permanently deleted from the Google Photos Trash. However, you may install to your Android device a deleted photo recovery app https://play.google.com/store/search?q=recover%20deleted%20photos&c=apps and run a scan for anything to recover.

In addition I recommend that you contact the Google Drive support team to see if any deleted files may be recovered. Hi,

I don't know anything about that other website. Look in their settings to see if it connects with Google Photos and Google Drive, and if so, disconnect it. I would think that others can't access your photos unless they are signed in with your account. To test it, sign out of your account and see if you can access the photos and documents.

I have read many posts from people asking how to bulk "move" their photos from their library to another folder. The answers suggest long hold or clicking the tick on the date but, for numerous photos, this is a lengthy process that would often be sped up rapidly on a PC by holding the SHIFT button.

I gave my family access to my photo library so they could see all our photos but this means they also see work photos or shopping ones if I'm planning their birthday presents! At the time, the photos manually came from my DSLR camera. Now we all have quality phones and all take pictures, this is a problem. They are collated, stored first on my NAS and then uploaded to Google Photos so we all have the same ones. This creates duplicates for any photos I take unless I manually check which ones I took and not upload them. It would be far to add theirs (then mine) to a new family photos folder so what is the best way to include the 15 years worth of photos in my library without manually clicking each individual day. I haven't found the answer to this in any of the questions so far.

Answer:

Google Photos isn't designed to allow what you are asking. The album size is 2000 maximum.

The only option I can recommend is to create albums to share individual events, if you manually upload from your NAS you get the option to Add to an album when upload completes, or you can see at https://photos.google.com/search/_tra_ photos by upload date which could be useful if you have batch uploaded using Backup and Sync.

No easy answers, Sorry, Peter

Answer:

Ahhh thank you. I guess I can always make a 2017 folder, 2016 folder etc. But no way of including all the ones currently in there I guess? All the photos on the NAS are sorted by name so in order but Google Photos does it by timestamp so they appear out of order. I spent ages manually altering times so am reluctant to spend days redoing them, especially when it is going to take ages transferring them across in the first place. Many thanks for your help.

Answer:

Hi, there has been an update in the number of photos allowed in an album, it is now 10,000 per album or 20,000 for a shared album with a 10,000 limit per contributor, Peter

I am confused as to why photos marked as "favorite" (with the star icon), don't automatically get put into an album. I technically do see a "folder" where you see the photos marked as favorite, but when I want to select one of these photos from, let's say the Messages app, I don't see this folder. I think that the favorites folder isn't visible because it isn't an "album". I would love to see this feature fixed, or implemented, since it is annoying to try and find the right picture to send sometimes. The alternative solution would be to create an album with all those favorites, by using the "add to album" menu item feature, but this defeats the purpose of the favorites feature.

Answer:

The favorites album is no album created by yourself indeed, but an automatic collection showing all starred pictures. So only visible in the Photos-app like other Google-collections on top of the album page.

But if you start in that Favorites "album" and select a picture and then try to share it, can you select the Messenger-app then ???

iPhone 7 suddenly blazed through 6GB of data in a matter of minutes, when Google Photos was not being used (i.e. not viewing photos) and while Mobile data was disabled within the app.

I am aware (from reading responses to other posts about this same issue) that viewing photos might use data. This was not the case here. The app somehow burned through a huge amount of data, causing my phone to be blocked from data access (after incurring overage charges).

I can see multiple complaints about this issue and the same answer about data being used when the app is used. This is not what is going on for me and for most of the others posting about this: it is virtually impossible to go through that amount of data while using the app in a normal mode.

Can someone please look into this and offer some form of explanation?

Thank you,
Gordon.

Answer:

I would blame Apple instead of Google.

I far as I know, if the Google Photos app is not actively on, it even can't upload such a massive amounts of data - even if you have shooted a couple of long high resolution movies before.

And uploading 6 GB to Google or any other cloud can't be ready in a few minutes either.

So you have to wait on real experts with iPhones, but it maybe wise to consult an iPhone-forum in meantime because it also can be a virus.

Sorry.

Hi was anything resolved here, I've had exactly the same, whipping through data very quickly, and now due to excess data being used am being charged £533 by our phone provider.

Ashish, deleted Photos are stored in Trash for up to 60 days, if you delete Photos again from trash, that's two times deletion.

Unfortunately, once Photos are deleted from trash there is no way to retrieve them back :(

Question: If I put my photos on my SD card will I still see them on the app in my phone

Photos on SD card will I still see them on Google photos in my phone

Hi Susan, depends how you are going to put them there, by changing the camera save location or inserting an SD card with them already on.  Nothing stopping you trying either to answer the question yourself, or are you using some other method, Regards, Peter

After a device software update Google Photos stopped working.  The Play store didn't give me the option to uninstall - only to either "open" or when selecting uninstall it said "Do you want to uninstall all updates to this Android system app?"  I tried that many times and Google Photos still would close right after opening it.  I thought if I could uninstall and reinstall it would work.  I uninstalled it from my device's settings, then went to the Play store to reinstall.  The Play store thinks it's still there and only gives me the option to open or uninstall the app's updates.  I no longer have the Google Photos app.  I chatted with Google support for an hour last night and couldn't find a solution.  How can I get Google Photos back when the Play store thinks it's still there?
