Like the title says, I've been taking pictures on my phone and those photos have been backed up onto my personal Photos account. For some reason, I can also see them on my school account(most likely because I have them connected to each other). When I try to delete them from my school account, they disappear on my personal account as well, which I don't want. This is frustrating and I would like some guidance.

Answer:

Hi ETHAN YEN

Open the school account, and disable Autobackup and sync. Then in the application, select tap on your account for the school, and in the menu select "- Remove activity account". This will turn off your school account for Photos. Then go through the browser https://photos.google.com using the school account, select your files and send them all to Trash, then clear Trash

I have 1000 folders with pictures in my PC. I used to sync with Google drive and view with Google photos over Google drive.
After disconnection I have to upload Google photos.
How can I do it in one time?
I have use the same albums as in my PC

Answer:

Hi Kobi,

the normal answer to this question would for you to check @How to upload photos but in your case it depends on what you have in your account following the split between Google Drive and Google Photos.

How you go forward depends on what you have left from the way you used to do things.
  1. Are your folders still synced to Google Drive
  2. If they were enabled to be viewed in Google Photos they should still be in Google Photos after the separation
    • Are they in Google Photos
    • Are they in Albums in Google Photos
If you have changed things after the separation, please give as much detail of what you have left and where, looking forward to hearing from you,

Peter

Answer:

Thanks Peter
1 my folders still synced to Google drive
2 all the pictures from drive are in Google photos  in the main "Photos"
I'm in this situation till decide what to do.
I have to find solution based on folders of albums. And Google photos based on flat library

Kobi

Answer:

OK

If you go to https://get.google.com/albumarchive/  you should see an album called Photos from Drive which should contain all the folders you had on Drive. You could put a bookmark to that main folder so you can get there quickly, or you could search for an album name, or you could create Google Photos albums by selecting the contents of each one and adding to a new Google Photos album.

Do you see them?

Answer:

Thanks
I can all the folders. What is the connection between those folders and Google photos.
If I will delete folder it will removed from photos in Google photos?

Hi Muriel,

I'm not sure I understand your question. However, to prevent Google Photos cellular data fees you may turn off synchronization altogether in the Google Photos app under Settings > Back up & sync > Back up & sync, or turn off everything under Settings > Back up & sync > CELLULAR DATA BACK UP and Settings > Back up & sync > WHEN TO BACK UP > Roaming.

Hi,
The majority of my NEF raw images from my Nikon D850 will upload without an issue using Chrome (Version 77.0.3865.90), however for some reason certain images in groups won't upload at all.

For example, this morning I had a folder of 105 images made up of D850 .NEF raw images taken from 2 different dates (about a year apart) at different locations. 12 of those images (from one day and one location) uploaded without issue, but the remaining 93 did not.

I have thousands of these of D850 .NEF raw images in Google Photos, but for some reason there's the odd group that just won't budge.

I've tried:
  • clearing history/cache,
  • signing in and out,
  • using incognito mode,
  • using different browsers,
  • doing smaller batch uploads at a time,
  • even searching for the file names on Google Photos to see if there was a name conflict (possibly trying to upload a duplicate)
  • pausing Backup and Sync

But none of it works. It's not an issue that's just started either, it's been an issue for probably the last 6 to 9 months. I just keep trying to upload whenever I get a chance.

It's not to do with storage either (GSuite Owner/Admin/User) as I have unlimited and upload at original quality. I also realise that my camera is not supported (weirdly enough as it's been out for 2 years), but it's still surprising that most images upload without an issue.

Does anyone else have any ideas, suggestions, etc?

Thanks,

Answer:

No Google here, so I only can guess what is wrong and most probably because your cameratype is borderline compatible. Google has been a bad raw-supporter for years, so the only thing you can do is complaining via feedback in the backup & sync app and I don't have the impression that earlier problems have been solved ever.
But:
Raw-files are meant to get professionally edited in Lightroom or comparable complex software in order to create better jpg's then the camera produces automatically. And these better jpg's can be uploaded without problems.
Thereafter the raws can be deleted or kept on disc for eternity, but probably never will be used anymore.
So it makes not much sense to keep them at Google at all.

PS: I do think that the words "unlimited" and "original" are a contradiction, but I don't know about Gsuite.

I tried my sons Ipad (not pro) and that did work fine both on pictures and video so I think is has to do with some bugs in the Ipad pro setup.

Question: face recognition not recognizing me.

my face is not not available in the face grouping of my account

Hi Nepolian

Thanks for posting to the Photos Forum.

Face recognition is dynamic behind the scenes, so can't be manually created by users.

Here are a few troubleshooting steps to try:

1. Launch photos
2. Select Albums
3. Select People & Pets
4. Scroll through the list to verify your image thumbnail / group is not shown
5. Select the : menu in the upper right
6. Select Hide & show people
7. Scroll through the list again and look to the greyed icons with the eye/slash icon.
8. If you find your image among the hidden icons, select it to remove the greyed filter and show the image
9. Select Done in the upper right.

If your image is not among the visible nor the hidden ones, you can try teaching the system who you are.

First, keep taking more photos of yourself.  The more images, especially current ones, the system has to work with, the better.

Second, you can try this to see if you can nudge things along...

1. Open the Google Contacts app on your Android phone
2. Select Left Menu > Settings > Your info
3. Select the pencil/edit icon
4. Select the photo icon in the middle
5. Choose photo > select an image of yourself from the Photos picker OR, Take a new photo
6. Make sure your contact name is correct and save

NOTE: This will NOT automatically create a face grouping in photos for you. But I have noticed in my own experience when I've done this for other contacts that eventually new face grouping suggestions appear. Give it a try and see if it helps.

Best,

Joe

- I had about 270 photos in my Samsung phone's gallery from a trip to China.
- When I got home on Oct 4 I charged my phone, which seemed to upload the photos into my Google photos as usual.
- I deleted the photos from the phone gallery to free up memory in my phone.  While doing that I closed the gallery and looked at the photos in my Google photos app a couple of times to make sure they were staying there before I deleted the next batch. The photos were in my Google app, so I continued deleting.
- When I went to look at the photos again on Oct 5 in my Google app, disaster, they were all gone!

I now know what I hadn't realized before - my Samsung phone doesn't have a trash bin.  I have tried following your and others' instruction for retrieving photos by using restore apps, but no luck.  I have tried 8 different highly-rated apps, but they haven't found my photos.

My Google photos trash bin is empty... Is there any in-transition memory or transactions-storage area in Google's own system that might contain my photos?

Thank you very much for any help,
Margaret

Answer:

Hi Margaret,

I'm really sorry for your lost memories.

The only hope is that the Google Photos app had a chance to upload the photos online to the https://photos.google.com website. If so, it might be possible to recover them by getting in touch with the Google Drive support team.

Therefore, I recommend that you contact the Google Drive support team to see if any deleted files may be recovered. Just open the Google Drive https://support.google.com/drive/?hl=en&authuser=0#topic=14940&contact=1 contact form, click Missing or deleted files, select a contact option, and be sure to tell them you permanently deleted files in Google Drive. It's important to not mention Google Photos, otherwise they'll direct you back here where there's nothing we can do.

I have multiple accounts for photos only (no drive or email data used). I have Moto free 2 year storage expiring soon. First anomaly is that first three accounts used to back up photos from this phone show only a few mb uploaded, rather than the several gigs. Last (5th) account accurately shows 2 g uploaded and 0 against quota (until offer expiration). Main issue is with 4th account...which was showing 4gb storage used, which made sense, as I had uploaded 19gb, and I received email from Google photos indicating offer would expire soon and I was (would be) 4gb over quota. So I started deleting videos. Storage used went down to 1.99 and then froze. Won't go any lower. Trash emptied. Caches and datas cleared. Nothing in archive. Phone now says 15G have been uploaded (yet photos is showing 2g of quota used). Moto service can't help because it's Google app. There's no Google photos support and drive support can't help as they see no offer in my account and just that I'm 2gb into quota. I don't want to delete everything. Everything is in original size. Forum is full of similar issues either with simple solutions or ignored questions...is there any way to fix this glitch? I don't want to download everything and don't want them to automatically compress to high quality. It's their app making this mistake so how to get them to fix it??

Answer:

Hi Daniel,

Sorry to say there is no way we can fix anything for you, and it will only be guesswork trying to work out what is wrong.

Not quite sure exactly what the status is, you mention storage being used, but the offer about to expire! I don't understand that, as if the offer is still in place then you should have zero in Google Photos.

Deleting videos is always suspect in these situations How do you know which ones are using storage?

Regarding automatic compression, this will only apply to new uploads, as far as I know it won't try to recover anything over quota, just keep nagging you to upgrade.  Which isn't a bad idea for a couple of $ to see how things are post expiry and give time to sort things out. Google One support might even be some use in resolving any issues and you can always cancel as soon as you have things how you want them.

Happy to discuss things, but we won't have any definitive answers except for experiences wecan share,

Regards,
Peter

Answer:

@Tim Evans,

Unfortunately we have run out of ideas about what might cause this.  Google Photos do not provide 1:1 user support, the Community is made up of volunteers who try to help using our experience.

If you have the confirmation in Backup & sync settings that you have unlimited storage it sounds like an account issue. Storage is based on Drive quota which is common to Gmail, Google Drive and Google Photos.  The common agency is Google Drive Support

If they refer you back to Google Photos we don't have access to support, perhaps they should be able to escalate to Google Photos internally on your behalf as they work for the same company.

There is also Pixel Support or the Pixel User Community and If you do get an answer we would be very grateful if you shared it so we can help other Pixel users.

Good luck,
Peter

Hey everyone. I recently downloaded google photos and allowed it to perform a backup of all my photos onto the app. I didn't have them cleared out of my camera roll off my iPhone because I still wanted to keep some on the device. However, once I finished the backup, I went into my camera roll. All of the pictures are still there but they are not opening/loading. I'm unable to bulk download images to my device, I have more than plenty of storage and don't need my images only on the cloud, and it's downright unrealistic for me to take the time to download all 1500+ images one by one. I'm sure I'm not the only one with this problem either but when you want to share an image on an app and it's not there because it's in the cloud and not on your device, its very annoying to have to open photos, find it, then download it, and pray the app refreshed your images.

Secondly, I'm unable to create a new album, even after reinstalling photos, and restoring my phone as well, I just get the error uploading media failed.

Answer:

Hi Tyler,

Welcome to the Google Photos Help Forum.

Unfortunately, it is not possible to download all the images at once, therefore, I highly recommend leaving feedback about it through the following steps:
  • Open Google Photos.
  • Click on Menu.
  • Select Send feedback.
  • Click on Send.
The product team reviews the feedback regularly and uses it to better improve the product overtime.

However, as you're facing issues while creating an album in your Google Photos, I recommend trying the steps below in sequence, this may help in fixing the issue:
  • Make sure your device is up-to-date.
  • Make sure the App is up-to-date.
  • Try restarting the App through the following steps:
    • Go to your App Settings.
    • Click stop on the afflicted App with the Force Stop button.
    • Wait a few seconds to make sure the App has stopped processing, and then attempt to re-start it.
  • Close the background running apps through the following steps:
    • Go to your App Settings.
    • Display the Active Apps on your device.
    • Select the App you wish to close and Force Stop it.
    • Repeat this step with all active Apps.
  • Try clearing your App cache through the following steps:
    • Tap the system Settings tab on the main screen of your device.
    • Tap the General section of settings that is on the far right.
    • Tap Storage in the General tab.
    • Clear the cache data once storage calculates the data.
    • Back out of the storage section.
    • Tap Applications and find the application in question.
    • Tap the application and clear the cache (if available).
    • Clear the data for the application if there is no cache to clear.
    • Exit the settings screen and restart the device.
Let me know if this helps.

Best,
Emma

BACKGROUND:
  • I have been a long-time Apple Aperture user. Have 3TB worth of neatly organized photos on my computer in folders (YY/MM/<Name>) + tagged + in Aperture Albums. I use "referenced file" feature of Aperture which creates a small low-res thumbnail for Aperture library (saved in my laptop HD) but leaves photos in its original place (i.e. external drive)
  • Also a big fan of Google (G) Photos due to ease of upload from phone + unlimited storage + face search + sharing. But, don't' like simplistic organization tools of G Photos.
  • So seeking to marry ease of access G Photos  (for viewing + sharing only) without losing the power of organization (for editing/deleting).

DESIRED OUTCOME:
  • Continue to use Aperture or Lightroom to organize + tag + rate photos.
  • Sync my external drive (where original photos are stored) to G Drive (such that I don't loose hierarchy).
  • Ideally speaking, I would like to have these photos just "show up" in Google Photos without any action from me (as there are 100K+ photos so don't want any manual effort). This would allow family can see life-long memories without having heavy-duty set-up.
  • Use photos in my G Drive as the "single source of truth\

    Answer:

    @Vimal Solanki
I am not an Aperture, Apple, or not even a "Backup & Sync" user, thus cannot answer all your questions, but at least part of them:
    • "Is what I am looking for possible?"
I can only tell what would be possible in Windows if you do not want to upload manually, but there may be issues typical for Apple:
      • You can upload all photos using Backup & Sync. That will mirror the folder structure of your computer in Drive.
      • When you search in Google Photos with the title of such folder you will get a result with the photos of that folder.

    • "Would these photos count towards my G Drive storage (if I choose Free High Quality)"
In principle not, but when a photo is rejected by Photos it cannot be compressed and will count. In https://drive.google.com/drive/quota you can see which files use most storage.

    • "Would Google Photos read EXIF tags/info?"
Unfortunately Photos does NOT read tags. It reads captions though.

    • "If a photo already exists in G Photos (through Phone upload) and I put a second copy on G Drive, assume G Photos would detect duplicate and only show one version?
In theory there is duplicate detection, but there are also lots of reports about duplicates being uploaded. One thing is sure: when anything changes to the photo (except path/title), also adding/changing data, a duplicate will be uploaded. You will have to try with a limited sample (you can upload those manually) to be sure.

    • "I for some reason don't see "Drive option in G Photos setting described here. FYI - I am an early G Apps user, not sure if there some restrictions?"
Google Suite or school accounts have less options, but I am not sure which ones. But this is such a huge project that I would create a new Google account, at least for trying and see how it goes. Note that once photos are uploaded it may be hard to get them removed, especially when they are mixed up with your mobile photos.
You find some general info about uploading in this link.

    Answer:

Thanks, @janvb for the helpful info!

To your point, I ran a small experiment re duplicates. Copied same 1 photo and 1 video under two different names (1 add'l character in the name, no other change). B&S skipped copying Photo to G Drive with a helpful pointer that it already exists. But it did copy video one more time and now two identical files exist on G Drive. Having said, that, I don't see duplicates on G Photos. Sharing FWIW. On a somewhat related topic of  B&S cycling through the same uploads, found this thread very helpful.

Would appreciate pointers on remaining elements as well as Mac/Aperture experience from other experts.

    Answer:

    Some additional remarks:
    • Exif-data is not stripped or changed on Drive or Photos.
    • Captions added in Aperture can be seen on Drive and on Photos.
    • Keyword tags from Aperture: are searchable on Drive, but not on Photos.
    • Face tags from Aperture: are not used on Drive and on Photos.
    • Not clear why you want to re-upload phone-photos and videos, unless they were edited on desktop to a much higher quality then originally. Then you can delete the phone originals.
    • You can sync down the phonepictures to desktop by switching-on the Drive-option to create a Photos-folder and the contents of that folder can be synced down via the Google Drive settings in Backup & Sync.
    • It makes no sense to use the Photos-option to show the contents of normal Drive folders.
    • Due to the overall syncing you should set "Don't delete everywhere" in B&S to prevent accidental loss of originals on desktop.
    • Because of your extreme amount, you should set the networkusage to a lower value in the general options of B&S - else your internetconnection will be come unusable for weeks or months.
    • Perhaps etc.

    • Because of your extreme amount, you should set the networkusage to a lower value in the general options of B&S - else your internetconnection will be come unusable for weeks or months.
    • Perhaps etc.

    Answer:

    @Vimal Solanki

    • Also a big fan of Google (G) Photos due to ease of upload from a phone + unlimited storage + face search + sharing.

    • Sync my external drive (where original photos are stored) to G Drive (such that I don't lose hierarchy).

Help! Update to new Photos version June 15th 2018 and now I cannot see option to add a title or change the themes as in the old version. Did they actually take these options out? THe new timeline editing feature is very helpful but taking out  the themes and titles so you cannot add effects or titles is very problematic. Am I missing something? Using Note5 with Android 7.0.

      Answer:

      Hi Adams,

Thanks for posting in the Google Photos Help Forum.

I do understand the inconvenience as you're unable to add the title or change the theme from your Google Photos in an Android device. Therefore, I recommend trying the steps below in sequence, this may help in fixing the issue:

As far as I know, Google removed the ability to add titles and change the effect themes quite a few years ago. It's really frustrating because those options were really great. I've not been able to find out when or why they did this.

I have many thousands of photos in google photos and I want to download all of them. Selecting a photo and holding shift while clicking the last photo doesn't work, as it seems to only be able to select about a months worth of photos, otherwise the shift key does the same as the Control key would, except the Ctrl key doesn't work that far from the first selected photo either. Also, when I select some it says it can't download more than 500 photos at once. BTW, Takeout won't work for me.
Sorry about my confusing explanation, if I haven't said something that you need to know, just ask.

      Reuben

      Answer:

      Hi Reuben,

I can unfortunately only confirm it's not possible to select -- and hence download -- more than 500 photos at a time. And Takeout is the only way of downloading the photos in bulk.

A possible workaround is to use a third-party cloud backup or storage service that can import photos from Google Photos and download them in bulk. Some additional download options are discussed here https://sites.google.com/site/picasaresources/Home/Picasa-FAQ/google-photos-1/how-to/how-to-download-all-autobackupped-pictures

      Answer:

      1. You can hover over the first date, a check mark appears to select photos of that date
      2. Scroll down, for example using the mouse wheel, arrows or Page Down keys
      3. Hold the Shift key and hover with the mouse over a thumbnail. When the thumbnails turn blue you can click. Now all pictures between the first and the last selected picture are selected.
      4.  Go to the right top corner where there is the 3 dots, press them and select the option to download.
      5. If you want to delete, you delete also by pressing the delete button near the 3 dots.
      6. Please note that Google drive (https://drive.google.com/drive/my-drive) and google photos (https://photos.google.com/) are at different place but they are using the same storage. So if you want to get more free space you can delete items either from drive or from the photos and the delete from the BIN/Trash also.

      Hi Kamal,

I’m sorry, it’s not possible to recover photos permanently deleted from the Google Photos Trash bin. However, you may install to your Android device a deleted photo recovery app https://play.google.com/store/search?q=recover%20deleted%20photos&c=apps and run a scan for anything to recover.

In addition I recommend that you contact the Google Drive support team to see if any deleted files may be recovered. Just open the Google Drive https://support.google.com/drive/?hl=en&authuser=0#topic=14940&contact=1 contact form, click Missing or deleted files, select a contact option, and be sure to tell them you permanently deleted files in Google Drive.
