However, I do NOT want to give Google Photos access to my phone's camera roll. Yes, that is what the Google Photos iOS App will do for you. It will upload photos from your phone directly to the Google Photos cloud.

Here is a helpful article on Back up and sync from iOS.

Don't use iCloud Photo Library and Google Photos simultaneous unless you do a lot more analysis and really understand what you are doing.

Don't rely on any single storage location (a computer, Flickr, Amazon, Google Photos, Dropbox) for irreplaceable images. Always have at least two copies.

I'm sorry, you said digital camera and I missed it (I focused on the iOS Tag)!

You don't need to import the images to a computer, but using the SD card reader on the computer (or plugging an appropriate USB cable from the camera to the computer is the easiest way). This won't consume additional space on your computer.

Simply, connect your camera to the computer (via cable or SD card) then go to https://photos.google.com/u/0/

and click "UPLOAD" near the top of the screen. Then navigate to whatever logical device has your photos (maybe F: or G:). Go all the way into the folder containing the images select them (in Windows Ctrl A) and click the "Open" button.

This will be a hassle if your phone happens to create a new folder for each day, but is not too bad if it creates monthly folders.

Plug the SD card in a card reader, then

to upload to the library https://photos.google.com/

either click the Upload button,

find the photos on the SD card,

drag & drop them to https://photos.google.com/
when ready you can add the photos to an album

if you want the photos in an album I recommend to create a new album by clicking the "Create album" in https://photos.google.com/albums or open an existing album.

Either

click the "Add to album" icon (mountains and +)
click "Select from computer" and proceed as usual. The photos will be added to the album AND to the library

or drag & drop the photos you want to upload into the album. The photos will be added to the album AND to the library

To add photos to an existing album:

At least on a computer you can find the album in the pop-up list by using the Find function of the browser (Ctrl+F). Note however that for old albums you must scroll down far enough so that the album is in the list.
Albums are basically sorted by date of the most recent photo in the album, but in the pop-up list you also may find the most recently used on top.
You can also try the other way around:

Open the album
Click the "Add to album" icon (mountains and +)
Now you must find the photo(s) in the library, which can be easy (recent photos) or worse than finding the album in the album list

Are you the owner of the albums ? I ask because albums shared with you and shown in https://photos.google.com/sharing can be shown in the Albums tab (3-dots>Show in albums). These albums will probably not be in the list

Of course there may be a problem in the database linked to your account. You can send feedback via the main menu of Google Photos. You may start with #photoshelp and provide explicit consent for Google to look into your account to resolve this. No idea whether that will help though. Let us know if it does.

Something can go wrong by user action or on Google's servers, and when you have no real backup you may loose photos.
Google is to blame because it makes you believe that it is safe to have your photos ONLY on Google Photos. They should offer an easy way to automatically make a really safe backup, but instead they killed the only existing (not perfect) option instead of improving it.
Therefore we recommend to upload from mobile devices to (for example) OneDrive:

Many are missing photos because they did delete the photos and emptied the trash. There is nothing we can do in that case. The user can try to recover photos from the devices by using recovery software.

How did items get sent to Trash?

When you use the Google Photos app to delete photos or videos, you will see a confirmation message, "Remove from Google account, Google Drive, synced devices, and places it's shared?" If you click "Move to Trash," your photo or video will be removed from the Google Photos website, removed from Google Drive, and removed from all synced devices such as Android smart phones, iPads, iPhones, and computers.

If your phone is getting full and you want to delete items to make room for new items, instead of moving the items to Trash, it's much safer to use the Free Up Space feature in the Google Photos app. Free Up Space will remove only the items that have been successfully backed up to Google Photos in the cloud. All items that were NOT successfully backed up will remain on your device. However, you should be aware that if you have only one version of your photo or video in the cloud and nowhere else, you no longer have a back up. If you accidentally permanently delete your one and only version(s) from the cloud, or delete your Google account, or get locked out of your account, there will be no way to get your photos back.

You may have already checked the Google Photos Trash bin and found nothing there. There are two possible reasons why the Trash bin is empty:

60 days have already passed since you sent a photo or video to the Trash. Photos and videos live in Trash for only 60 days before they are automatically and permanently deleted. You will not receive a notice that the items were deleted.
You already emptied the Trash prior to 60 days of a deletion. When you chose to delete an item, you confirmed the warning box "Empty trash? Permanently delete items." Clicking the blue Delete button confirms the permanent deletion of your Trash items. Once the items are permanently deleted, the deletion is forever, and there is no way the Google Photos team can recover them.

Also use the Feedback option in the app so that the team is aware you are having an issue.

I loaded one folder at a time from the computer. That kept some order.

Every photo has its date written on the uploaded comment but Google Photo takes no regard for uploaded data

On a computer, you can go to https://photos.google.com/u/0/

for a range of photos, click the first (newest) then scroll to the end of the range you want to delete, hit the Shift key, what for the selection to turn blue, then click the last one. Then select the Garbage can.

Remember the Garbage Can deletes images ~Everywhere~ (all synced devices and the cloud). Only do this for images you don't want anymore.

Practice deleting small ranges first, it is easier. On a slow internet connection it can seem strange deleting big ranges.

You can, of course, also select out of sequence images by clicking on them individually.

I'm struggling to understand how backing up and syncing of device folders works. Let me explain the exact issue I have. When I use Snapseed, in the process of editing the picture I usually make several different copies of this picture before I edit the final one. I'd like the final pictures to be backed up to Google Photos but not all the other "working copies" which are also in the Snapseed folder. Actually, I'd like to clean the Sanpseed folder from time to time by deleting its contents. The problem is that by deleting the pictures from the Snapseed folder on my Android device via Google Photos app those same pictures are also deleted from the Google Photos cloud everywhere. So, it's either have the same pictures in Google Photos and in the Sanpseed folder or don't have them at all. I'd like to have them in the cloud but not in the Sanpseed folder if I delete them. How to achieve that?

The only workaround I can suggest is to disable Backup for the Snapseed folder and selectively backup only the finished article. You can access non backed up photos by tapping the 3 bar menu; Device folders and edit as normal then use the 3 dot menu to Backup to Google Photos and also use the 3 dot option to Delete from device.

Another option would be to install Google Go which allows Edit with Snapseend and has the option to share by uploading to Google Photos,

That's exactly what I already tried. I turned off backing up for the Snapseed folder and then used three dots menu and choose an option "Back up now" for selected images. The images appeared in Google Photos but also disappeared when I deleted them from the Snapseed folder even when backing up for that folder was turned off. Actually that was the main reason I made this post because I was just confused about how things work in Google Photos.

I take a photo. It's stored in the DCIM camera folder which has backing up turned on. I open the photo in the Snapseed and edit it. Then I save the photo which is saved in the Snapseed folder which has backing up turned off. In Google Photos app I find a Snapeed folder which is under Photos on the device. I open the Snapseed folder and the edited photo. With the photo opened I press three dots in the upper right corner which opens additional options (Back up now, Move to folder, Copy to folder, Add to the album,...). I press "Back up now". The photo is now visible in two locations... in the Snapseed folder and among all the photos in the Google Photos cloud. Now... I go into the Snapseed folder which, as I mentioned, has backing up turned off and I delete the photo... and the photo is deleted from everywhere, even from the cloud.

I just described exactly what I just did.

I have read multiple posts and threads on deleting all photos at once from Google Photos. They all say to select 1st photo by clicking shift and than last photo and than release shift to select bulk images.

This is where the issue starts.

1 - I can only select 20 to 25 photos visible on screen. Can't scroll anyhow to select more photos below.

2 - When I decrease zoom so I can select more photos, chrome starts freezing.

3 - When I tried from Android app, photos reappears again and again even though back up and sync is off and I have deleted photos from device.

Kindly suggest me aome other way to delete the photos

NOT: "clicking shift and than last photo and than release shift to select bulk images."

Yes: Click the first image in the range, scroll to end of range (not more than about 500 to be safe), THEN hold the shift key until the selection turns blue color and select last image in the range. Then click the Garbage Can icon.

Practice on smaller groups of photos until you are comfortable.

On a slow internet connection (up/down) this can be awkward.

Make sure that the first image you select is THE IMAGE, NOT THE DATE.

Example:

I have successfully selected ranges 100s of times.

Start small and get comfortable with how it works, then start doing larger numbers of images.

Hello, I have a problem with the photos I uploaded some years ago on Panoramio and that now appear on my Google Foto page. Well their size is much more than 15 Gigabyte and I could have problems in receive emails, so that I would ask you and authorize to delete all of them.

I deleted 30000 in 5 minutes. Ctrl+Shift+minus to zoom out on your browser until you can only just see the check mark in the corner of an image. Hold shift as you click the first one. Release shift. PgDn 20-30 times then find another image, hold shift and click the check mark. They all turn blue down to that point - find the (now tiny) delete symbol top right and delete - I got 3000 each time through this. Repeat.

I had the issue of duplicate photos...like thousands of em. I did the following:

Use google takeout to download (my 45Gb) of images.
Use DupeGuru to delete duplicate photos
Use https://github.com/mrishab/google-photos-delete-tool/ to delete all the photos

Note: you may have to fiddle with the code a bit based on your computer and internet speed. Also, zooming your browser out deletes more photos but should only be done if you have a lot of ram and a good processor. As a point of reference, it nearly froze my computer with 4GB and a 2.8Ghz processor but worked fine with my 8GB ram and 3.5 Ghz processor computer...

I have seen several good, but also a few wrong advice. You can select many photos/videos as follows:

Select the first photo
or hover over the first date so that you can select all photos of that date
Scroll down, but not too far and not too fast. By trying I found that you can click "Page Down" about 4-5 times.
Hover with the mouse over a photo and hold the shift key.
When the thumbs turn blue you can select by a left mouse click.
Repeat steps 2 and 3
When the thumbs do not turn blue you will have to scroll back up till the last selected pics, select one more, and repeat steps 2-3

I used that method to test counting the number of photos in Google Photos, and managed to select 30.000 in about 10-15 minutes. When you want to delete all photos you can delete after each selection. You can delete more than 500 at a time, but I did not test more than 1000. Other actions (like download) are limited to 500.

I use Google photos to edit my photos on my Android phone. For a couple of years now, when I'm finished editing and click Save, the updated photo is what gets saved (no duplicates). This is great as I don't have duplicate photos for everything I edit. If I want the original I can open the edited photo and click 'undo edits'. If I wanted a duplicate I would click on options and choose save copy.

However, since a couple of weeks ago when the operating system was updated, I have now noticed that when I edit a photo and just click Save, a duplicate photo is created by default (this is without me clicking Save Copy).

What's happened?

I used to be able to edit a photo directly after taking it with the Camera App on my phone. This photo would be saved as usual. Now, I only have the option of "Save a Copy" after editing. The camera app is set to save photos to the external SD card.
Google Photos only offers a "Save copy" button on those photos.
Google Photos saves the edited copies to a PhotosEditor folder on internal storage.
If I enable "Backup & sync" on the PhotosEditor folder, I then get duplicates (original + edited) in my photo stream.
This problem started a few months ago; previously, Google Photos was perfectly able to transparently save non-destructive edits to my SD card photos without creating disconnected copies.

You should have been aware of that very abnormal situation before starting an automatic uploader.

Because now you hardly can clean up.

Besides: I am trying what stupid software can have created these thumbnails because I never have seen them before. Of cause you see thumbnails in the Windows-Filemanager but that does not mean that the real images are thumbnails too - that are pictures with less then a few hundred pixels longside and very small ones (below 256x256) are not even uploaded to Google Photos, but maybe to Google drive only - see the contents of https://drive.google.com/drive/computers

In mean time I will try to find-out what will be the best and most safe method to clean-up.

Sofar I did not found any method on Google Drive or Google Photos to filter on small files, so you will have to wait on a more clever expert (no Google here - just volunteers).

But in meantime you could give some more detailed feedback how these thumbs are specified.

We know that Mac-computers produce an awfull lot of rubbish in the normal Picture-folder which can be excluded by correct settings in Backup & Sync (easily overseen), but we are not aware of a comparable problem in Windows unless caused by some photo-editor.

If you have used Picasa in the past, you may have hidden picasa-original files which may show as unedited pictures (look as duplicates on first sight), but that are no thumbnails.

So without any technical details from your side, this problem will be very hard to solve.

I don't agree Peter: normally thumbnails are in hidden folders and maybe very important for correct operation of some Windows photo-application we can't imagine. But it also maybe some application Brett is not even aware off because installed years agoo and hardly used since then.

Normally I don't see any thumbnails in my picture-folders when I switch-on showing hidden files in the Windows Filemanager ("Explorer"), while I am quite sure that Windows itself builds thumb-databases - but I only remember from seeing in some old Windows-version like XP which is completely outdated.

So thereby I asked Brett to come back with more information before doing anything.

I am also running into this issue. I'm migrating my IPhoto library into Google Photos using the backup and sync app and its creating THOUSANDS of duplicates due to the facetiles and thumbnails.

I am contemplating moving back to Iphoto if Google can't fix this. It's absurd. Where is the Product Management team on this at Google?!? This issue should have been tested and fixed well in advance of releasing the product.

Now I need a way to search for, locate, and delete all of these worthless facetiles and thumbnail duplicates.

I plan to check back on this thread every month to see if a solution gets posted.

I have been maintaining a separate album of my daughter's pictures from past 1 year since she is born, this album was shared with other family members as well and the pics have lot of comments time to time from family members.

But yesterday to my horror I found out that all the pics have been disappeared from the album, pics are available under photos though, they are not deleted but disappeared from that particular album.

All my efforts to assort pics have gone in vain and so are the memorable comments from family members. This is disheartening!!

I had over 500 photos from my daughters first year and then a few weeks ago the same album showed only ~50 photos (the more recent ones) I also see the photos under photos, but it is a huge pain as I had already selected the right photos for this album.
