Question: l had photos removed from Google photos withiout me removing them

there photos on my Google photos they are gone and l didn't delete them

Hello Eddie,

Thanks for posting in the Google Photos support Community.

It can be possible that the photos weren't uploaded successfully to Google Photos (cloud) and also make sure you're logged in to Google Photos with the same Google Account that you used during the backup. Photos/videos that are not synced or backed up, will still appear in Google Photos and will have this icon  (which means not synced/backed up) or some photos/videos will also show up with the two arrows in a circle mean backup is in progress.

Once the upload is complete there will be no icon on any photos/videos. Often, many of us misinterpret that they are all backed up because the photos/videos show up in Google Photos and we over see the icons on each photo/video. If the photos/videos weren't backed up they cannot be deleted from the Google Photos library nor Trash.

In case, you are uploading a large amount of data (photos/videos), please know that it might take 24-48 hours for the photos and videos to sync across all devices. Please ensure to have 'Backup & sync' enabled on the Google Photos settings while you're backing up your photos and videos. To check is the content is backed up, login in to photos.google.com to checked for your backed up photos and videos.

However, if you're sure they were backed up, I recommend you looking for your video here:
If a photo/s is deleted from Google Photos, it would go to Trash/Bin for the next 60 days (after deletion). Unfortunately, if the photos aren't found in Trash or deleted from Trash, I'm afraid, you might not find them else where to recover them because Trash is the last resort to retrieve your lost/deleted photos.

Meanwhile, also try giving the below steps a try once again in a sequence to help resolve the issue:
  • Close the Google Photos app and re-launch it.
  • Sign out and sign back in to Google Photos with the same Google Account.
  • Clear App data:
    • Open your device's Settings app (not the Google Settings app).
    • Touch Apps.
    • Select Google Photos in the list.
    • Touch Clear data.
  • Update the Google Photos app on your Android phone:
    • Visit the Google Play Store.
    • Open Google Photos.
    • Touch on Update.
Let me know how it goes.

Hi all,

Sorry to squeeze into this, but I'm experiencing the exact  same issue many pictures that were backed up simply disappeared from my account. I followed the steps above but no success they aren't in my trash bin or picasaweb or google drive. I checked both the Android apps of Photos and Drive and as well as the the browser version and I even tried different browsers. It looks like weren't removed, but simply disappeared.

I realized that Google Photos has been automatically changing the quality of my original photos I have taken on the iPhone X where it becomes more saturated and the temperature/color is risen.

I already set the Backup and Sync to Original Quality, but I can noticeably tell the difference. However, once I redownload the photo on Google Photos to my iPhone, the photo goes back to normal, but I want to be able to keep my photos in their original state without having to redownload and keep every picture on my phone.

I don't know if this is a bug or if this can be fixed with an update, but I know for sure that my phone is being backed up and turned yellower without my permission. Please help me fix this!

Hi Matthew Le!
If you think that the application is not working correctly, then you can write feedback for the Google Photos team. There describe the situation:

• what did you do to eliminate the problem,
• and what do you want to have as a result.

Answer:

You mention that if you remove an image from your iPhone X then download it from Google Photos back to your phone, the picture appears as it should. Have you tried looking at the image on the Google Photos App after deleting the image from your phone but before downloading it from Google Photos back to your phone? The Google Photos App will display images that are captured by your phone or those backed up to Google Photos, and I wonder whether the incompatibility causing the color shift is just for those images taken by your phone and still resident on your phone; if so, the solution would be simply to clear your phone of images once backed up (which is generally desirable in any case).

Answer:

Lobalobo, no, I meant that any pictures I take on my iPhone X and then back it later on my Google Photos, it still looks the me on both function; however, once I delete the photo on my iPhone X, Google Photos alters my photo to look more yellow and saturated. But if I redownload the picture, it turns back to normal on my iPhone and on Google Photos.

But if I redownload the picture, it turns back to normal on my iPhone and on Google Photos.
So, two questions:

First, are you saying that when you remove the images from your iPhone, the image is altered to look yellow and I I assume this yellow appearance is only on your iPhone within the Google Photos App, but that if you look at the image on, say, a laptop web browser, it looks fine. Is that right?

Second, you say you "delete" the images from your iPhone, which causes the problem. There are three different ways to remove an image captured by your phone from your phone while leaving the image backed up to Google Photos: you can delete the images from the phone's own photo software, outside of the Google Photos App; you can delete images individually "from device" only within the Google Photos App; or you can select Free Up Space from within the Google Photos App. Have you tried removing the images in each of these three ways and, if so, does the yellow color change occur with each of these three removal methods?  (My suspicion, and hope, is that you have deleted the images from the iPhone's own photo software, causing the problem, and that this will not occur if you remove the images from the device within the Google Photos App instead.)

Answer:

Hey Lobalobo, I tried downloading an iPhone X photo onto my desktop. And i chose a photo that has been deleted from my iPhone X, but I realized that it won't open on my computer since it downloads as an HEIC File; however, I tried downloading a picture I took a while back on my iPhone 7 and it downloads as a JPG File and works perfectly fine. Do you know anything about this?

Update: I just read that this has been happening to all Apple device that has been updated to iOS 11, since according to articles, Apple has replaced their JPEG File to an HEIC File (High Efficiency Image File Format).

You mention folder sync, did you use the preferences in Google Drive (sync some folders) or My Computer with upload to Google Photos enabled. The first is sync and the second is backup and the answer depends on which you have used,

Answer:

Hello there,

Welcome to the Google Photos Support Community.

If you've deleted them from Google Photos and want to restore them, please know that photos/videos deleted from the Google Photos library, goes to the Trash for the next 60 days. So, in case, you deleted it by mistake you can always restore it from Trash folder within those 60 days (post deletion). But, if you don't find it in Trash, probably it must have been deleted more that 60 days ago. Unfortunately, restoring your lost/deleted photos and videos from Trash is the last resort.

If no, please let me know.

Amanda

Answer:

Hello Amanda, thank you for your support.
But, my problem is a slightly different.

All of my photos were permanently deleted after syncing with a new android phone.
I guess that syncing process did not work properly : maybe the photos of a new Android device overwrote existing photos.
never deleted all of them by myself.

Surely and obviously, I went to trash and could not find any photos.
Could you please show me the way to directly connect to Google photos development team?
I think it happened because of the syncing bug. I hope they can trace my activity log history.

Thank you.

Question: Hi I am syncing my photos to google photo for the first time,

Hi Rebecca,

Your symptoms indicate you are backing up a large optimised iCloud library and it is a long process, with no option but to wait until it is complete before things settle down.  This is made worse because the Google Photos app needs to be open for the Backup to work.

To quote another user:>

Cory Imdieke said:
I've been using Google Photos and iCloud Photos together for a while so I have some experience with this.

The two services play nicely together. The best option is to keep iCloud Photos turned on, along with optimize storage. Then install Google Photos and start the sync. Here's what happens.

At the beginning, there are (let's assume) no full-size photos on your phone, only in iCloud. Google Photos goes through every photo in your library, and wants to upload it. It requests the full-size photo from iCloud, which downloads to your phone and gets cached on the device. Then the full size photo is uploaded to Google, and Google Photos moves on to the next one. It keeps doing this until it's gone through all your photos.

The optimize storage setting is doing what it's supposed to do. At some point when the phone fills up, it will begin removing photos again like before. Let's say for example (using not real numbers) you have 5GB of free space on your device, which is enough to hold 500 images. Google Photos will download those 500 images from iCloud and upload to Google, then iCloud will see you're out of space and remove those images, and move on to the next batch of 500.

Google Photos and iCloud Photos don't really talk to each other much, all of this stuff just happens in the background automatically. When Google Photos asks for a photo, iCloud knows it needs to download it first so it does. Then when your phone fills up it knows it needs to clear off space.

It should pretty much manage itself without needing to do much. When you're totally done syncing with Google, you can just leave your phone and let iCloud delete the downloaded photos when it needs space.
'End Quote'

Answer:

Also if you are backing them up over WiFi only and have gone in and out of wifi it's going to take much longer. So leave phone on charger so you don't lose charge then if you have wifi where you live then I would say by time you wake in the morning you will be good.

Hello Shamim,

Welcome to the Google Photos Support Community.

Could you please elaborate the issue or your query for me to assist you better? Are you referring to backing upyour photos/videos from your Android device to Google Photos? If yes, to Backup your photos/video, before you start, make sure you're signed in.
  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Photos app .
  2. Sign in to your Google Account.
  3. At the top, tap Menu .
  4. Select Settings  Back up & sync.
  5. Tap "Back up & sync" on or off.
Things to keep in mind about this setting:
  • Changing backup settings will affect all apps that use Back up & sync, such as Google Drive.
  • If you have Back up & sync on, deleting the Google Photos app from your device will not turn it off. To turn off Back up & sync, follow the instructions above.
Here's a useful help article to know about backing up photos and videos to Google Photos.

After importing pictures & videos from one google account to another (unfortunately with location data removed), google photos, recognizes the faces of the people for the imported photos & videos, only on videos. For all the new photos added to the current account, faces are being recognized the way they should. For example: A person named Mark, for which there are photos and videos, is being recognized on photos only for the new photos taken of him, and only on videos on the group of photos & videos imported from the other google account. Even if there is a photo the same day the video was taken, it is not being recognized at all.

    Answer:

    HI,

Thanks for posting in the Google Photos community.

Unfortunately there is no way for you (or us for that matter) to manipulate facial recognition.  This is all on the back end at Google.  The best thing I can suggest is to give it time.  I have personally experienced what you are seeing and it resolved itself after 2-3 weeks.  Your mileage may vary.

    Hope this helps.

    Answer:

Well it's been 5 months, but I figured it out myself. Google photos, won't scan for faces on photos that don't have location data on them. It will for videos. As soon as I started adding location information to the photos, it immediately started recognizing them. So for anyone else having this kind of problem, which Google does not even give any details, this solved it

    Answer:

    @David
Your initial post said: "How do i get rid of suggestions for invites to share?"
I now think that this may cover two different things:
    • When you use the "Share" icon you get a list of contact suggestions to share with. I replied thinking that this is your issue. The list has two parts:
      • 8 contacts which come from recent activity. You cannot remove them, but they will eventually be replaced by other recently used contacts.
      • The list of all your contacts, which you can edit in https://contacts.google.com

    • But you may also get automatic suggestions to share new photos. You can turn this off in the settings under "Sharing":

      Sharing
      Manage preferences for sharing
           Sharing suggestion notifications
Receive notifications when you have new photos to share with friends
Please let us know if you have more questions.

I have uploaded few pictures to Google Photos, which I have taken with my camera in Adobe RGB colour space (in case it matters, the camera is Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mk II).

When I try just viewing the photos in the gallery they appear as good as they do when viewing them on a PC. However, when I zoom in, and the pictures reloads again to show more detail, it immediately loses saturation. That is not to say it becomes black and white, but the colours become significantly washed out.

I have noticed this only on my new phone - Huawei P30 Lite (MAR-LX1A EMUI 9.1.0, I can give you more details if needed). I haven't noticed any such desaturation occurring when zooming in on other photos,  either taken with my new phone's camera, or with my older phone's camera (Xiaomi Mi A1).

In fact, when I view and zoom in on the same pictures on my old phone (Xiaomi Mi A1), I don't notice any desaturation on any pictures - taken with either phone or camera.

Please indicate what are trying to do with a bit more detail so we can try to help you.

Since a while I use a new phone that Google Photo has as the standard gallery app. In the Pictures folder I created a subfolder for certain art where I store pictures of art. Extremely strange is that certain of these photos now have disappeared spontaneously from that pictures subfolder that I have never synced to your cloud what so ever. They are really gone! Is the standard gallery app of yours not trustworthy when it comes to managing your own material? How is this possible?

    Answer:

    Hello Nico,

Welcome to the Google Photos Support Community.

A folder and sub-folder cannot be created in Google Photos, only albums can be created with Google Photos library.

Please share the steps how and where were the folders/sub folders created so I can help you better.

    Keep me posted.

    Answer:

I'm refering to the client app on my phone and how your cloud service manage to deal with local folders, subfolders and photos i created or put on my own device with an external file manager. Where it went wrong is when i download some pictures en move the files with the Google Photo app from the Download folder to the Art subfolder. They stay there for a while and the next day or so they are gone, though as far as i see not those photos i moved with X-plore. Isn't that peculiar? By the way, i do not prefer to share/sync/backup this kind of content to the Google cloud. How your service deals with photos and albums could be a problem here, but removing my local files without asking is not okay.

So I've had my google pixel 3 which has provided me with free unlimited storage with the original resolution which doesn't reduce the quality or file size. My pixel recently malfunctioned and since I am overseas, I cant execute the warranty until I get back, so what I've done was buy a cheaper smart phone for the meanwhile until I am back. This means I don't have the free unlimited storage from my pixel. Because of this I want purchase google storage on my cheaper phone so I can back up my photos and videos. Now assuming I've got say 1TB of photos and videos that I've taken with my google pixel 3 from before, can I purchase a 200gb/month plan that will only start filling up what I upload from now onwards OR will it automatically be filled up from my previous usage? Also if I purchase a 200gb/month plan for this month, will I have the opportunity to increase this plan to say 2TB the following month?
    Thanks

Hello, I have uploaded videos from my photo gallery to google photos app and I made sure that they were successfully imported before deleting them from my camera roll. I did not have storage on my phone so I had to delete them off my phone and I knew they were in google photos but now I checked and the videos are nowhere to be found. I really need these videos, they are for a video I am making and it's suddenly gone. The videos are from October 13th.

Hi, I have been backing up my photos automatically from my iPhone to Google Photos, which has been very very helpful for organisation. As I often take videos and photos on my phone that I need to access and edit in bulk, I was wondering whether it was possible to access photos and videos as files through Mac Finder, similar to Google Drive and Dropbox. Otherwise, I have to download them to my computer and then delete them after, which takes up storage and wastes a lot of time. If this is not a capability, is there a way to request that this is looked into as a feature? Or does anyone have another workaround at all? I have considered copying all to Google Drive but I lose a lot of organisation and don't have much storage on there.

Thanks in advance for any help at all!

    Answer:

    Hi David Whelan!
In the given time there are no ways for this: Google Photos is a separate service, and it has nothing to do with the space and functionality of any drives on the Internet.

I can assume that Google offers a lot of tariff plans for everyone who wants to have more space in Google Drive, for example "Google One\

    Answer:

    Hi,

If the photos are not in the trash on your phone and you have deleted them from your trash folder, they are likely gone.  You can try to go to Google Takeout - takeout.google.com - to see if you can recover them but it is not likely.

Sorry I don't have better news.

Over night, over 40 albums are suddenly empty and the photos cannot be found anywhere in Google Photos. I haven't deleted any photos from these albums and they are not in the Bin either. What happened? Is there an outage on Google Photos servers?

The albums are all still there, just empty.

    Answer:

"Is there an outage on Google Photos servers?"
Probably and hopefully a temporary one.
Do you still see the albums with photos on https://get.google.com/albumarchive ?

    • Click "Select none"
    • Scroll to and select "Google Photos"
    • Click on the words "Google Photos" and then on "Select photo albums".
The number of albums is very high because it includes many dated albums created by Google.
    • Click "Toggle all" to deselect all albums
    • Select one of the albums which does miss photos. You can find them by using the "Find" function of the browser (Ctrl+F). Click OK. You are back in https://takeout.google.com/settings/takeout
    • Scroll down and click NEXT
    • Select settings (File type, Max archive size, Delivery method) and click CREATE ARCHIVE
The resulting ZIP files do contain photos and .json files with extra info. Do you get the missing photos ?

    Answer:

I do see the albums on https://get.google.com/albumarchive  but they don't contain any photos.

Downloading through https://takeout.google.com/settings/takeout yields a zipped folder with only html and json files, also no photos unfortunately.

    Answer:

    That's weird. I have no explanation/solution.
Did you also check the bin of Google Drive ?
Do you use Backup & sync ?
Do you have Google Photos synced on mobile devices ?
I hope you have a backup somewhere.

    Answer:

What is weird is that it affects photos till Sept 2017, when Backup & Sync was introduced.
    • How were these photos uploaded ?  From Picasa, using the "Desktop Uploader" or manually ?
    • Were the older ones uploaded to Picasaweb (Google Photos was launched in 2015)?
I will ask whether other TC's have more ideas.

Edit: I re-read your former posts and you say that most are uploaded using Backup & Sync. I do not understand why the Drive team refuses any help in that case. I will escalate the issue.

    Hi Jack,

    Thanks for the follow-up!

Yes, you can attach the full-sized photo in email!

First, you want to download the photo you want to add into the email.
Then attach the photo in your email.

If you're using Gmail, there is an easy way, by the way, click on the include image button, and include the photo from your Google Photo directly.

The issue is seems no one knows how to answer the question. I am on a page manager on facebook...I want to share a photo I have organized in google photos by albums. I only want to share that photo in a comment. I don't want to share the album...I don't want to download the photo to my phone...I use google photos as my gallery so all my photos are backed up to google photos. Problem, when posting to facebook by clicking on said photo icon the resulting gallery is something I don't see on my sd card or my stock gallery app nor my google photos app....just a manegery  of photos that are all jumbled and out of date.
