Grey boxes after trying to sync Mac photos app

Question: Grey boxes after trying to sync Mac photos app

So from researching, it seems that something got screwed up in the process of trying to backup my Mac photos library to Google Photos. Ironically, I can see all the assistant-created collages, videos, etc. (which I think actually look really great!) However, I cannot view any photos in the actual photos section when I go to the web. I did this approximately a month ago and there's been no change with the grey box situation.

At this point, I would like to just wipe out what I've done so far in Google Photos and start over. But to delete the photos I would have to be able to actually select them which, since they are grey boxes is not possible.

Help/Suggestions? I did the feedback option through Google Photos but just wanted to cover all my bases.

FWIW, I am a longtime Apple fanboy (since 2001) but am pretty much ready to fully switch to Google (starting with the forthcoming Pixel 3). That said, an issue like this makes me seriously second guess that decision...

Answer:

Hello Joe,

Welcome to the Google Photos Support Community.

Please confirm if you're having the same issue on a Google Photos app (if possible).

Meanwhile, also try giving the below steps a try once again in a sequence to help resolve the issue:
Let me know how it goes.

Answer:

Hi Amanda,

Thanks for reaching out!

Actually, I am NOT seeing the issue on the iOS app and am able to see all of the pictures. But I am seeing it on the Photos App (in Chrome OS) and on the website. I tried all of the suggestions (signing out/in, disabling extensions/add-ons/plug-ins, and safari/chrome/firefox). Still no luck.

Answer:

Hi Amanda,

Just to give you an update, on closer examination, only some pictures were showing up in the iOS app (around 1400 out of 9000). I removed those pictures (in an attempt to "start over" as much as I'm able). However, there appears to be no effect on Google Photos (through google.com). From what it seems to me, the only solution would be to completely wipe the contents of my Google Photos app (which I am unable to do b/c of the grey boxes) and start over. Can you please provide me assistance with this?

Question: In create a movie how can i phase my music in about half way through ?

I've made a movie with my music but dont want it from start to finish?

Richard,

The movie editor feature in the Google Photos app is extremely basic. So, unfortunately, the functionality that would be required to specify a precise point where music begins and/or ends is not currently available.

However, there is a sort of workaround that I have used many times with my own Google Photos movie creations. Make a note of the exact time in the movie where you want the music to come in, then just use a third-party audio editing app to add silence to the beginning of your sound clip for that same duration.

It's a bit crude but the simplicity of it works perfectly.

Let me know if you have more questions about this.

Hi There,

Google Photos will never change the quality of photos which is in your mobile phone. Also it will change quality which was backed up into Google Photos.

Once photos was backed up with High Quality there is no way to download/convert those photos to Original quality.

Please let me know, if you need further clarification.

Question: Google policy violation notification

I received a Google notification re: my G+ post https://plus.google.com/+MariusRadu/posts/gZZvon5nU5…

I received a Google notification re: my G+ post https://plus.google.com/+MariusRadu/posts/gZZvon5nU5q (using images from Google Photos) and I think is (wrongly) related to the word "Ţigăneşti" used several times in photo descriptions. Even the word itself may be related to the gypsy community and considered somehow offensive by automated Google text analysis, it is only a geographical name used everywhere on the maps and touristic tracks descriptions so I have no fault using it.

How can G+ staff or Google be informed of the situation and asked to abort the warning ?

Answer:

Hi,

In the notification, were there directions showing how to contact Google?

Answer:

@ Onion Zwiebel No, in the email, I didn't get any info re: how to contact G+ or what it is about :-(

It was only my guess that the note was related to the post I mentioned (https://plus.google.com/+MariusRadu/posts/gZZvon5nU5q) so I left a reply there for G+ staff and that was all... nothing else happened after that so still now I did not know what was all that about :-(

Hello Albert,

Welcome to the Google Photos Support Community.

Let's see what we can do in this case. I recommend you read and try what is suggested in this help article titled: Delete photos & videos. Here a work around you can do:
  1. Open your Google Photos app
  2. Select all the photos you wish to delete
  3. Delete them.
  4. Open your Photos app (from Apple, not Google Photos)
  5. On the Albums page, scroll down to the bottom and go to the album "Recently Deleted".
  6. Tap Select on top right.
  7. Tap Recover All.
  8. Now go back Google Photos. A card might pop up asking you to "sync a deletion". Tap "Hide card" or "No" or "Cancel".
  9. You're good to go.
Let me know if you have any questions.

Best,
Amanda

I have a Pixel 2. Before that I had a Nexus 6p. Before that a Nexus 5, and so on. I've always shot raw+jpeg for as long as it's been supported. I also pay for Google One. I have unlimited at original quality for my Pixel 2.

Now I'm looking back over my Pixel 2 photos from this time last year and I see all my raw versions are gone from exactly this time last year on. I've always had raw+jpeg on and keeping the originals is very important to me. It's half the reason I bought a Pixel 2.

Now I see that my photos have been deleted without my knowledge or even a warning. I'm very upset. Google's promise was to keep the photos at original quality and now I see that's not been the case. I was about to buy a Pixel 4. Now i'm not so sure.

Please help as I'm not at all technical but am desperate. I have a Nexus 7 tablet that I haven't used in a long time. Sadly, I've suffered a bereavement, and I knew that I had precious photos and videos on my Nexus 7. When I went to open the Google photos app, I could see the photos but they were 'greyed out' and a box popped up saying I needed to update photos. I updated photos app but now the photos have disappeared! When I try to open the photos app it says " unfortunately  photos has stopped" . Hi Jewel,

Welcome to the Google Photos Product Help Forum.

I don't know what Monday's is, but I am assuming that you are getting the photos into your Google Photos (maybe with scanning, or Photoscan, or other method).

Snapseed is a photo editing app which is free and links well to Google Photos.  Install it, then go into an image where you want to add text, go to the 3 dot menu and select "Edit in Snapseed",  from the Tools menu select "Text" (you may need to scroll down to see it). Select the text style you like, then double tap the example text to change it, pinch the text to resize and move it.  Then Export and "Save a Copy" so as to not change the original.

Snapseed is very powerful and can be used for many things, just play with it a bit to become familiar with what you need and don't become overwhelmed by it.

Best regards,  Dougsap (volunteer Google Photos user)

So I've synced my Google Drive and Google Photos accounts together, and for the most part they seem to work well together, but sometimes specific images will not sync from Drive to Photos.

For example, I found two images of outer space on my PC that I liked, downloaded both to my desktop, and then uploaded both into my Google Drive under a folder I have labeled "Images\

Answer:

First you need to verify that both have been synced correctly to https://drive.google.com/drive/computers
But if only one reaches https://photos.google.com there can be several reasons:
  1. Google Photos sees them as identical and tries to prevent duplicates.

  2. For  reasons unknown to me, the file is not compatible with Google Photos.

  3. One of the pictures is smaller then 256x256 pixels.

  4. The picture not seen at Photos has an old datum and can be found on a much lower position in the library.

Please let us know your findings.

Answer:

@Jyoung084,

please try either of the documented methods in the link Rinus gave you and let us know how it goes,

Thanks,

Answer:

Thank you, turns out that one of the images was just barely under the 256 pixel threshold, so when I expanded it, it appeared, and some of the others had date stamps that put them farther back than I anticipated. Thank you for the assistance, I'll be sure to check these criteria from now on!

Answer:

Good to hear, but pictures far under 1000 pixels long side hardly can't be taken seriously :-)

You can upgrade such micro's (if important) by combining them in a collage with 2-9 pictures via Create on https://photos.google.com

Be aware that correct dates (even when fake) are extremely important on Photos and that is why scanned old prints always cause a lot of additional troubles there.

I went to delete some photos from my device (Pixel 2XL) and Google Photos warned me that those photos weren't backed up. However, all my photos show up on my computer as well as my phone so I know they really are backed up -- or at least I THINK they are. I'm scared to delete them when Google reports them not backed up. Any suggestions on a fix?

Answer:

Assuming that you are trying to Delete from Device and not just Delete, when you are getting a not-backed-up message, I wonder whether the images that get this message are Portraits. If so, what the message may be telling you is that the original (as opposed to portrait-processed) will not be saved if you delete from the device. But even then, I would not assume the message is anything but an error.

My recommendation is that you test this by taking a Portrait mode image that you don't care about, wait for it to be backed up, then try Delete from Device, ignore the warning message, and see what happens to the cloud version.

If it's not Portrait mode images, or only Portrait mode images, that are creating this warning, I would again find one you care little about and ignore the message and see what happens (which is what I do in similar situations). I ignore these messages routinely and don't recall having anything ever removed from the cloud on a Delete from Device command (except perhaps originals in Portrait mode). Moreover, if anything is deleted accidentally, it should be recoverable from the Trash for 60 days (and certainly long enough to reverse an accidental deletion if done immediately).

All this said, for any critically valuable image, I would not rely on any of this and would download from the cloud first and save to a hard drive folder before experimenting.

Let me know if this helps (and if it does please select the Recommend button below this post so that others can more easily find the solution to similar problems).

Wow, and apparently I need to point out that it needs to work on Windows. Only three p[latfroms were on the list: Android, iOS, Web. Drive has more than that on it's list.

Anyway, at the basic level these are files. I get that saying Drive or Photos is sorta helpful but unless Photos is going to become a management tool there's really no need for two apps. I doubt I'd use Photos for that anyway, since The Albums, and other editing features on my phone or tablet are slick and provide integration that we want. Windows. Desktop, Wed are still behind.

The biggest problem now is attaching photos to say an email. Or inverting into a presentation. I've resorted to creating folders and sub folders under Documents the way we did 20 years ago. That way they are synced. I can download to there as well.  Then in Windows I use the Library to put them in "groups" for easier recall. The issue is I have to do all the editing first. For downloads that's an issue because I have to upload, edit, then move. the dates become today. Another issue Google needs to fix.

So, I've found way for it to work for my needs. But this isn't the norm. I'm not using face, or place anymore. For my home photos I have just left it alone. but still have to hunt and peck.

Hi Dan AZ,

We all live in hope of Google adding more features to make our work flows easier in Photos, I suggest leaving a feature request directly for the development team by following these steps:
  1. Open the Google Photos app on a mobile device or go to photos.google.com using a computer .
  2. At the top left, touch or click the menu icon > Help & Feedback.
  3. Touch or click Feedback.
Please know that you may not receive a response, however the Photos Team are still reading the feedback! To see all of the feedback you have sent across all Google products, visit the Google Feedback Site.

Hi Jannati,

I’m sorry, it’s not possible to recover photos permanently deleted from the Google Photos Trash. However, you may install to your Android device a deleted photo recovery app https://play.google.com/store/search?q=recover%20deleted%20photos&c=apps and run a scan for anything to recover.

In addition I recommend that you contact the Google Drive support team to see if any deleted files may be recovered. Just open the Google Drive https://support.google.com/drive/?hl=en&authuser=0#topic=14940&contact=1 contact form, click Missing or deleted files, select a contact option, and be sure to tell them you permanently deleted files in Google Drive.
