Question: All my stuff is public! I want files photos private. I forgot how to change it. I didnt vhange it!!!
Need help securing my stuff again!!! Memory problems!
Doreen,
None of the pictures you upload to Google Photos will be visible to the public or to anybody else unless you manually and intentionally choose to share them.
Also, even if you do share some pictures, none of the subsequent pictures you upload will be shared unless you again add them to a shared album. This does not happen automatically, you must do it step by step yourself. This is on purpose to prevent accidental or unintentional sharing of private photos.
You can see all of the albums you're sharing by tapping on the Sharing tab at the bottom of the Google Photos app screen. You'll see a list of all shared albums, both your own as well as albums you've joined that belong to someone else.
If you no longer want to share the albums you've created, you can open the album, tap the 3-dot icon in the upper right corner, then choose to stop sharing. From that point forward, nobody will be able to see the pictures that are in that particular album.

Answer:
Thank you so much Greg!!! I've had some problems with someone accessing my account etc. And I see that a few profile pictures are made public which doesn't really bother me but I do not want all of archive public. In fact I have to read how to to save them but first can you tell me are those private too. The only reason the profile pictures are public is because they were public on my facebook I'm guessing? Thank you for your help in advance!
Answer:
If that person does not reshare without asking your permission or download some of your pictures for use outside her own computer, sharing is safe.

Google resizes the pictures from my old 20D differently from those of my other cameras. For example I use a Nexus 5 and I Google saves them at a pretty decent size. Google also saves my iPhone photos taken on my phone at a pretty decent size. However the photos from my 20D are saved at very small files sizes (e,g. 500KB). Does anyone know why it does this with this one camera?
Answer:
The 20D is an old 8 MP camera, so its normal jpg-files wil be between 2-3 MB and uploaded in high quality setting (see https://photos.google.com/settings in your browser), they generally will be compressed to a value around 1 MB.
But that value also can be 0,5 MB or 1,5 MB depending on the image-contents.
So nothing strange.
Perhaps your mobile-cameras are uploading in original quality in the Photos-app: look into its settings.
Answer:
There is nothing necessarily wrong with 500k as the algorithm used is very efficient. What you need to do is download an original and a HQ then compare how they look side by side. I agree with Rinus in that it is simply because the age of the camera. It isn't the same standard as today's mobile phones can offer.
Answer:
I don't agree Peter, but people always come with one extreme example instead of taking some average over at least 10 randomly chosen pictures.
For example: I just saw an example from a modern 24 MP Samsung smartphone with produces files around 8 MB. But uploading in HQ-mode downsizes to 16 MP and further jpg-compression downsized to 0,5 MB. But the same owner did not share an album with at least 10 quite different pictures with me, so I even can't do any averaging. Because then I would have found something like 2 MB and that feels better :-)
Goodnight / Rinus
Answer:
Goodmorning from here

Any discussion about visual losses in quality is quite complicated and confusing, because then you should upload at least 10 sharp pictures in original quality in order to able to view them in the same browser on the same HD monitor and almost nobody is doing that.
Thereby any conclusion based on one filesize only is useless and we should take the words "High Quality" seriously. To pay or not to pay: that is the real question.
PS: at the same time the same users use the extreme heic-compression on their iPhones :-)
Answer:
Thanks for your help. I am pretty happy with Google photo for the most part. Google photo also drastically reduces photos that I scanned from the old film days but not all of them. For example one scanned image was downsized to 212KB and one that was 8.3 MB! So I can't figure out why it downsizes some photos so small and leaves others in near original quality. I use the free version so I still like this product but I am thinking of going to a pay service that allows me to upload original quality photos (for a fee).
Answer:
"For example one scanned image was downsized to 212KB and one that was 8.3 MB!"
Can you tell us how many pixels the uploaded 8.3 MB photo had ? If more than 16MP Photos would reduce it to 16MP and also compress the 16MP photo. 212 kb is low for a 16MP photo, but I think not excluded when the photo has large areas in about the same color/brightness like this one (284 KB).
Answer:
It makes no sense to pay unless you are using Google Photos as your single backup which is unsafe. Because for viewing only, even pictures upload in original quality are shown compressed - else the site would become by far too slow to be of any practical usability.
Then you also should realise that you have to remove everything already uploaded for free, because all these file are more or less compressed. That's no problem for a few hundred, but a large problem for tens of thousands, because you only can delete per about 500 at a time.
PS: there always are unexplainable things at Google - if I upload my 14 MP originals in HQ-mode, they are not compressed either. But "14" is a very holy number (2x7), so google does not dare to touch them :-)
PS: think about Google One - see https://one.google.com/storage
Answer:
I love Google as a simple viewing program. I like the free version because I don't have to think about how much storage I have left. As for backup, I will use another site as my cloud backup for full resolution pictures.
Answer:
For a "simple" viewing program free Google Photos is good enough - so just go on like usual and don't look to the megabytes anymore :-)
It is much more important to upload neatly edited pictures.
Best / Rinus
Answer:
As an added note: I uploaded a photo from the 20D. It was 8.2 MP 3504 X 2336 and it sized it at 597 KB. Part of it is I don't understand the algorithm. A photo taken with my iPhone was 12.2 MP 4032 x 3024 and it was sized at 3.4 MB. This is a curiosity for me. I plan on getting a brand new DSLR. It will be interesting to see how its pictures are sized. I'll keep you posted.

Pls help recover all deleted photos and videos
Hi Appu Appu 28,
if the deleted photos and videos are still in the Google Photos Trash you might be able to restore them as explained in these instructions https://support.google.com/photos/answer/6128867?co=GENIE.Platform%3DAndroid&oco=1
Otherwise it’s not possible to recover photos permanently deleted from the Trash. However, you may install to your Android device a deleted photo recovery app https://play.google.com/store/search?q=recover%20deleted%20photos&c=apps and run a scan for anything to recover.
In addition I recommend that you contact the Google Drive support team to see if any deleted files may be recovered. Just open the Google Drive https://support.google.com/drive/?hl=en&authuser=0#topic=14940&contact=1 contact form, click Missing or deleted files, select a contact option, and be sure to tell them you permanently deleted files in Google Drive.

Google Photos does not rename - unless Google creates an addition - then "Collage" or "Effects" is added to the original name.
Please give an example, else we just think that you are doing something wrong yourself.
PS: Google Photos can't sort on filenames or numbers - on dates only.
Answer:
Bob,
Rinus is correct in that Google Photos does not change the names or dates on any of your pictures or videos. If you're seeing multiple copies of the same picture but with different file names or creation dates, you should look closer at the file details and EXIF metadata to find the program responsible for making that particular file. At least then you'll have a better idea about where to look to fix this problem.

Hi,
Thanks for posting in the Google Photos Community.
On your phone, can you check to see in Google Photos if there are any folders not syncing with Google Photos. These would be under Albums in Photos. Depending on the phone, some times albums like "Gallery" or "DCIM" where these photos could be do not sync. To do so, just open that album, then use the menu to enable syncing.
Also, if your phone has a Gallery or other Photos app, are the photos in there?
Thanks,

Hello,
The pictures that I recently took all disappered. I can see that I took them, as they were displaying in the circle on bottom right side of the google camera app. I took around 100+ pictures. When I got home, the back up was saying pending backup of 100+ photos. I pressed backed up and it completed. However, I'm still not seeing them in the google photos app. I can confirm that I took them as the Google Photos as suggested a Stylized photo that I took that is missing. Help please!

Answer:
hmmm, I don't think you can. When you said you wanted slow motion followed by regular speed, I just assumed you had both. Michael,
it sounds like your past editor had a nice, simple way to do that. Google Photos does not. Here's what I would do:
- start with 2 videos, one regular speed, one slo mo
- make a movie with those 2
- Use the trim tools to choose the portion you want visible from each. So, now you have Slo-mo clip1, Normal speed clip 1
- Duplicate Slo-mo clip 1 (tap the 3-dots to the right - duplicate) and re-trim
- Duplicate Normal speed clip 1 and re-trim
- Repeat

I and this other person are completely unable to share albums with one another in either direction. We have both tried it from the app and both tried it from the a laptop. If we share using email the emails are never received by the other person. If we send links to each others phone number then it comes up with a notification of "Can't find Link This link has been deleted or the URL is invalid" and shows a flashlight. If we send them just as links to one another we get a 404 error when we click the link that says "404. That's an error. The requested URL was not found on this server."
That is the first problem.
Two other problems are deleted photos from phone app re appearing and phone app continually getting stuck on 'getting photos'. It's really pathetic to be honest.
What can I do to fix these issues?
Thank you.

Question: How to find last uploaded photos?
Is there a way to find last uploaded photos? Search for _tra_ no longer works.
Hi Dan,
do you have more than one Google account? Can you see the recently uploaded photos here https://photos.google.com/search/_tra_ on the Google Photos website?

Answer:
In the Google Photos app for Android there's unfortunately no direct way of view recently uploaded photos. However, as a workaround, you may visit https://photos.google.com/search/_tra_ with a mobile browser on your device.

I liked many photos in shared albums. How can I find them now?
Btw, I saved them to mine collection, but how can I mark them as Favourites.
Answer:
@Dan
Liking (the heart icon) in the shared album is relevant (or irritating) for the owner only.
When saved to your own library, you should open them individually and star them, because that star is visible.
But hélas there is no filter yet to show your starred only.

It appears that the image is made squared instead of maintaining its original shape, causing it to become cropped. A black bar appears on the right but will go away if the photo is reopened. Still, it remains cropped if I attempt to zoom in.

Can you provide some more details about exactly what you're doing? I'm having some trouble understanding what's happening here.
Are you attempting to edit the picture, or are you just zooming in temporarily?

Dont know if this helps but even though we both have each other in our gmail contacts it doesnt seem to be acknowledging that in google photos maybe? When we type in their email it never suggests the other person and when you type it out completely it may show their name but it doesnt show their picture or aknowledge their google account.

Answer:
Usually, this kind of thing happens when the "creation date" of the image file is way in the past.
Google Photos organizes your pictures by the date they were taken or created, not by the date the files were uploaded. Ifyou upload a picture that was taken a long time ago, Photos will put it much lower in the Photos view, so you will have to scroll down to find it.
If you have a lot of pictures uploaded, finding an older picture that you recently uploaded can be difficult this way, but there is an easy solution. Click in the search box at the top of the screen, then click on "Show More" in the middle section below Favorites, Videos, Selfies, Movies, etc. At the bottom of the expanded list you'll see "Recently Added" and choosing that will show you your pictures in the order you uploaded them. It's much easier to quickly find a picture with a creation date when you look for it this way.
Let me know if you have more questions about this.
Regards,
~ Greg

I have been using iPhone So the file name of the pictures is saved as 'img0001'.
So I have a lot of different pictures with the same file name.
What happens if I upload these to Google Photos?
Is it overwritten? (Is the same file name recognized as the same picture so one disappears?) Or do you recognize it as a different picture?
After uploading a photo with the same name but another photo to Google Photos, I want to know if the two photos are safely downloaded when I download it again.
I wonder how Google Photos judges the same picture.
Answer:
Google Photos creates a unique identifier based on the contents of the photo file. Filename is ignored and if subsequently downloaded to the same folder (at least in Windows) a new name will be created, for example img0001, img0001 (1), img0002 (2), etc.

I created some folders on my phone and added photos to it from the camera album. I've turned backup and sync for these new folders in google photos app. But it is not showing up in the web app (photos.google.com). I wanted to remove those photos from my phone for space issues (~5gb). But I can't delete it from my phone without being absolutely sure that it is been backed up.
In short, I can see the folders in google photos app (android) listed as device folders, but they are not showing in the web app.

Answer:
Hi Subhendu,
Google Photos doesn't preserve any folder structure when uploading photos, all of them are instead uploaded in chronological order in the photo library and you have to manually sort the photos into albums if you want. You should see the uploaded photos here on the Google Photos website:
If you do see the photos there, do not delete them from the Google Photos app. The safe and recommended way of removing the local device copies of the photos without affecting the online ones is the Free up space option of the app's main menu.
