Backup and sync is removing my photos from folders and screwing with my organization. I want my photos to be backed up but I also want to be able to find them easily. Also, it is only random folders that are disappearing. I go in one day and it there, another day and they are gone. Also, when I try to move photos from one folder to another, it is only copying them, so that the original stays in the first folder and another appears in the folder I want it to be in. If I delete the original, it deletes both of them. There are also some photos which only appear to be a gray block and I can't view them. These problems have been happening ever since the system 10 update. Please help.

The Google Photos app takes no folders away, but you should be aware about the misleading difference between devicefolders (physical storage containers) and albums within Google Photos which are on the web only if you view the albumpage in the app. 
If you take away pictures assigned to albums because of thinking that they are not necessary anymore, the albums will disappear also or become empty covers. 
For organising folders you better can install the simple Galery Go viewer of Google - that's much less confusing because it only shows what really is stored on your phone without any dependance on the internet. But folders are not copied to Google - you only can upload their contents.

Needless to say, hope this can be solved as I can imagine how frustrated you must be. An initial question for you is whether you ever recall seeing your images anywhere but on the phone (or similar device) that you used to take the pictures. More specifically, did you ever see your images at Google Photos (photos.google.com) on a browser of your laptop or tablet or other device? If not, though this is no comfort, I know, it is possible that the images were never actually backed up but perhaps merely queued to back up (a distinction that is sadly confusing on many phones and tablets). If the answer is that you have viewed the photos at the Google Photos site, there is an excellent chance that they are there and that you will be able to recover them.

In any case, in searching Google for missing images you should check the following sites (being sure to sign in with the same Google Account you used on the phone or device with which you took the pictures):
If you still can't find the images, and you no longer have your old phone, I'm afraid that there is nothing that can be done.

If you are talking about your Take-out archive for Photos: that only can be downloaded to a computer with a lot of free space - but not on your Android-phone for a lot of technical reasons. 
Take-out generally is a download of last resort when you want to leave Google forever. 
So be more clear about your ideas please.

I'm based in the UK and my husband and I have both been using this feature of Google photos for a few years. 

As to how? We activated while in the states on holiday and it didn't vanish once we came home. It did get a little laggy for a while but it's been working perfectly now for ages. I only realised most people don't have it still when I went to do something on my mother's phone ( she's never visited America)

Hi Laura, Google Photos acts as a portal and shows you a view of the photos you have both in the Camera Roll and backed up.

With sync turned off the photos are still on your camera and you will still see them, but they should not be online at  https://photos.google.com/ 
 
The only way to stop this would be to delete the app,

Google photos acts as gallery in stock android devices you can stop auto sync in settings>backup and sync>and turn off it. you cannot stop your photos being shown up in google photos but when you have turn off backup and sync your photos don't go to cloud.If you want to stop the photos shown up in google photos you can disable in app info.hope you got it!!!

I say - that IS how it works. I have a device folder for pictures from Duo calls. They are in a folder called Duo. I have backup and Sync OFF for that folder. The photos in that folder do not show up in my Photos library of Google Photos.
So - what is different in your setup?

As for being able to identify which photos in your library are in the cloud and which are just on the device - I agree completely that there should be some kind of visual clue, like a cloud icon etc. On the iOS version there is a circular arrow icon on photos waiting to be uploaded. They removed that from the Android version a couple years ago - I don't know why.

Hi Rob,  the only setting in the shared library is for photo From the date you choose. So everything from that day to forever will automatically be shared.  In the example visible in the answer, 19th or earlier will not be shared but 20, 21, 22, 23 24....  etc. will be shared, Peter

If you added music within Google Photos, then it will be Google that has paid for permission to use that music. However, different companies have paid for different music and they don't necessarily overlap. If you are wanting music on a video, I would suggest adding it within Instagram once the movie is completed. That way you know you have the right to use that music (not get into trouble) and the artist is getting paid appropriately.

Hi Sara,
 
In terms of the Pixel deal, this only works with photos/videos that you have taken on your Pixel phone. It won't apply to any photos that you have just loaded onto your Pixel phone. You can find more information about the Pixel deal on the Help Centre as well - as the deal isn't forever. So you will need to check if when the end date for your deal is depending on your Pixel model.
 
I would also suggest that you check what upload quality you are using for photos not taken by your Pixel. If your upload size is set to High quality, you get unlimited free storage. But if it’s set to Original, your backed up photos will count against your Google Photos storage. Learn how to change your upload size.
 
I would also check that your photos are no longer in Drive. Given that you said your storage is referring to Google Photos, then it's likely they aren't taking up room this way. But it can't hurt to check.

I selected the Backup&sync option for my photos in the iPhone google drive app. I chose to have original sized photos, and I know that I am limited to 15 GB. I backed up the photos on my phone, and when I went to go look at them in the Google Photos, I only have photos from when I got my phone up until 2016. All of my current photos are not there. The settings in my google photos account says I have used only 9.1 GB of 15 GB for the photos. I got a confirmation email that my photos had been successfully uploaded. I never received any error messages. I am not sure why it won't pick up the most recent 3 years of photos. Any advice? Thanks!

  • Sign in to your Google Account.
  • Tap Photos Photos.
  • At the top, you'll see if your photos are backed up, or if it's still waiting to back up.

You can edit the Data / Time if necessary from "Info" on the 3 dot menu.  There may be an issue with successfully changing the Date / Time on  some iPads at the moment (my iPhone and the web interface works fine - https://photos.google.com/u/0/ )
 
You can add photos to an album and adjust the order by dragging the images.
 
You can easily create a video with up to 50 images, organizing them in an album first is a VERY good idea.

To the best of my knowledge, Google Photos is free everywhere, though to be sure you should suggest that your friend setup an account and see: if she or he is not asked to pay then she or he can just proceed. (Keep in mind, though, that Original quality photos stored in Google Photos do count against the user's storage quota, unless taken on a Google Pixel; High Quality storage is free.)

I don't know when this happened exactly, but I realised yesterday that a huge consecutive chunk of photos and videos disappeared (from 2012-2016).  The only major changes I can think of lately was me clearing space by converting all original size photos to high resolution.  There was also a change in google drive and google photos recently (and I did have my photos appearing in drive at the time).   I don't organize and fiddle with my photos - I let them accumulate and stay there (safe I thought).  

I don't have a backup and I lost so much :(... I followed all suggestions I saw so far on here (correct account, check trash, check backup).  

They just disappeared.  The only way I can think of it happening on my end is one day my somehoe highlighting a huge selection without noticing and delting; then clearing trash on a differenyt day.  Seems highly unlikely though. 

I once deleted some files from google drive and the google team restored them for me.  I can't find any way to contact google about google photos.  

I would appreciate any kind of help/suggestion about the issue, or about how to get in touch with google about this.
