Question: Some photos on my iPhone aren't being backed up. They are the images that are from an app called Photomyne which takes a photo of hard copy photos and the those images download into Photos. The photos are in Photos and look normal but they aren't uploading (all the other photos and screenshots are backing up fine)

I have tried looking at the settings on both my iPhone and google photos

Hello Michelle,

Thanks for posting in the Google Photos Support Community.

Unable to back up videos/photos can sometimes be upsetting. I'd recommend trying the below steps to check if they resolve the issue:
  1. Open the Google Photos app on your mobile device .
  2. At the bottom, tap Assistant .
  3. Read the first card. If it says:
  • "Waiting for connection" or "Waiting for WiFi": You need to either change your settings or connect to a WiFi or mobile network. Tap the card to change your settings.
  • "Back up & sync is off": Tap "TURN ON" on the card to back up your device's photos and videos, including ones you capture in the future.
  • "A photo or video was skipped": A photo or video on your mobile device doesn't meet our upload requirements:
    • Photos can't exceed 75MB or 100 megapixels
    • Videos can't exceed 10GB
  • "Backing up photos" or "Backup complete": This means your photos and videos should be saved.
Here are a few things you can do to increase the likelihood of background syncing of your videos in Google Photos:
  • Open the app more frequently (even if just for a few seconds).
  • When you finish a session, don't force quit the app by swiping it away.
  • Plug in your phone to charge.
  • Make sure Background Refresh is enabled.
  • Make sure you're not in Low Power Mode.
Login to photos.google.com (web interface of Google Photos) to checked for your backed up photos and videos. If with the 'Back up and sync' option turned on and if you've exceed 24-48 hours of backup, try uninstalling and reinstalling the Google Photos app from your iOS device. It's possible that Google Photos is merely scanning your library across all devices, hence the number fluctuates.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Regards,
Amanda

      Answer:

      Hello Yunnan,

Thanks for posting in the Google Photos Support Community.

You can group the faces manually. You can just click in the face of a person and "tag" it. Here's a help article to know more about labeling your face group.

Have you tagged/labelled her photo in the 'People' section of Google Photos? If no, here's how you can do it:

      To apply label manually:
      • At the top of a person's face group, click "Who's this?"
      • Enter a name or nickname. Now you'll be able to search with that label using the search box.
Note: Only you will see the private face labels you choose, even if you share those photos.

      To change or remove label:
      • At the top right of someone's face group, click More , then Edit name label or Remove name label.
Know what 'remove results' option is for:

If you see a photo that's in the wrong group, you can take it out.
      1. Open the group you want to remove something from.
      2. Select the photo you want to remove.
      3. At the top right, click More , then Remove results.
Meanwhile, Please try uninstalling and reinstalling the Google Photos app on your iOS device to check is this sorts the issue. Also, could you try toggling the switch off & then on for face grouping in Google Photos
      • Go to Google Photos appSettings > Group similar facesFace grouping.
Note: This will not delete the photo or video from your Google Photos library. Here's a help article for your reference to know more about face grouping and adding a label. Facial recognition feature isn't restricted to region specific. Here's a help article to more on how to use it.

Let me know if you have any questions.

      Hello Nannette,

Welcome to the Google Photos Support Community.

        • Photos can't exceed 75MB or 100 megapixels.
        • Videos can't exceed 10GB.
It does take approximately 24-48 hours for the photos and videos to sync across all devices. Please ensure to have 'Backup & sync' enabled on the Google Photos settings while you're backing up your photos and videos. It's possible that Google Photos is merely scanning your library again, the scan will take some time, but it shouldn't re-upload the photos entirely as duplicates. The app may look like it's doing this but it's actually doing a re-scan of the photos.

If the issue still persist after 24-48 hours, then give the below steps a try in a sequence to help resolve the issue:
      • Close the Google Photos app and re-launch it.
      • Sign out and sign back in to Google Photos with the same Google Account.
      • Clear App data:
        • Open your device's Settings app (not the Google Settings app).
        • Touch Apps.
        • Select Google Photos in the list.
        • Touch Clear data.
      • Update the Google Photos app on your Android phone:
        • Visit the Google Play Store.
        • Open Google Photos.
        • Touch on Update.
Let me know how it goes.

          Hello Rocky,

Thanks for posting in the Google Photos Support Community.

If you've deleted them from Google Photos and want to restore them, please know that photos/videos deleted from the Google Photos library, goes to the Trash for the next 60 days. So, in case, you deleted it by mistake you can always restore it from Trash folder within those 60 days (post deletion). But, if you don't find it in Trash, probably it must have been deleted more that 60 days ago. Unfortunately, restoring your lost/deleted photos and videos from Trash is the last resort.

If no, please let me know.

Hence, those videos and pictures are very memorable and precious. My cellphone needed to have a factory reset due to broken earjock. Before I brougt my phone to the customer service, I saw all our photos in Google Photos. But, when I have my phone back, I couldn't see those photos and videos anymore. Please help to retrieve as my mother really wanted to have it printed. Also, i tried to follow your suggestions on Google Help but I can't still find those pictures.            My phone was set to GMT+00:00.
But Google Photos changed it to GMT+02:00, which was the local timezone.
But that changed the time from 13:57UTC to 13:57CEST, which is 2 hours before the photo was taken.

I think that is a bug.

          Answer:

Unfortunately Google do not share their methodology.  From what I can work out the phone time displayed is taken as local time and the location determines the time zone.

          Answer:

          ok...
how can we file a bug report?
i mean: that is clearly a bug and not acceptable...
timezones r ridiculous already, but such funny rules r much too silly...

          Answer:

Sorry, no scope to submit a bug report. There are already many in the system with no updates available. How it works now is good for me, I set my device to local time and everything is fine. The only real option is for Google to just record the device time without using time zones, but my voice isn't loud enough.

          Answer:

          1.
how does Google Photos learn that there is a bug in general?
          2.
they should just store the seconds since the start of 1970 (aka UNIX time) as reported by the smartphone...
it would be much easier than guessing the "correct" time zone... LOL

          Answer:

          1. We submit a form subject to NDA parameters, in general for issues affecting multiple users and causing issues with the normal operation of the app.
          2. Google don't share how or why they design as they do, the only way to reach out is via feedback which is a one way process, or by subscribing to Google One for 24/7 support.

Question: How to delete duplicates photos at one time

          Hello John,

Thanks for posting in the Google Photos Support Community.

Google Photos has identical duplicate detection, where if you have uploaded photos to Google Photos already, it will not re-upload the same photo (each photo file has a unique "Hash" that allows us to determine this).

Hence, Google Photos avoids uploading duplicates, when different upload methods or devices are used, as long as the photos aren't edited. There is no easy way to remove duplicates, but some of the following may help:
          1. You can delete duplicates manually, for example in https://photos.google.com/ where they should be next to each other.
          2. The problem is however which one to delete:
            • one photo may be edited, the other not,
            • one photo may be in an album, the other not.
          3. When the upload dates are different (for example when you uploaded long ago via Picasa, and now again using the Desktop uploader). It may be easier to delete the duplicates in https://photos.google.com/search/_tra_ where they are sorted by upload date.
          4. There are more ways to get a useful search result, for example the device from which they are uploaded.
          5. See https://sites.google.com/site/picasaresources/Home/Picasa-FAQ/google-photos-1/how-to/how-to-search-for-photos
          6. Since very recently it is possible to delete photos directly from an album. Go to "More options" (3-dots icon), and use "Move to trash"
          7. When you uploaded in the free "High Quality" and have your photos in albums, it may be wiser to simply ignore the duplicates in the library.
Unfortunately, a feature to sort and delete duplicates of photos with Google Photos that are already backed up doesn't exist. You may have to manually select the duplicates and delete them.

Let me know if you have any questions.

          Regards,
          Amanda

Question: How do I turn on motion on google photos, I use an iPhone

I'm trying to find the option to turn on motion when taking pictures.

To turn on motion - called Live Photo - you tap the icon in your Camera that looks like a bullseye. Capturing motion in a live photo has nothing to do with Google Photos. When viewing a live photo with Google Photos, you have the option to show the motion or not with the little motion icon in the upper right of the photo.

Google cleverly has entrapped most users since the beginning of age (and I am one of them) without no choice to accept substandard service but having to pay for it and deal with the pain of using Google Photos app. Thanks Google for using our data and profiting from us.

          Answer:

To turn on motion - called Live Photo - you tap the icon in your Camera that looks like a bullseye. Capturing motion in a live photo has nothing to do with Google Photos. When viewing a live photo with Google Photos, you have the option to show the motion or not with the little motion icon in the upper right of the photo.

          Answer:

          Hello Vaibhav,

Thanks for posting in the Google Photos Support Community.

I understand and I'll be happy to help. Were the photos backed up to Google Photos (cloud)? It can be possible that the photos weren't uploaded successfully to Google Photos (cloud) and also make sure you're logged in to Google Photos with the same Google Account that you used during the backup. Photos/videos that are not synced or backed up, will still appear in Google Photos and will have this icon  (which means not synced/backed up) or some photos/videos will also show up with the two arrows in a circle mean backup is in progress.

Once the upload is complete there will be no icon on any photos/videos. Often, many of us misinterpret that they are all backed up because the photos/videos show up in Google Photos and we over see the icons on each photo/video. If the photos/videos weren't backed up they cannot be deleted from the Google Photos library nor Trash.

In case, you are uploading a large amount of data (photos/videos), please know that it might take 24-48 hours for the photos and videos to sync across all devices. Please ensure to have 'Backup & sync' enabled on the Google Photos settings while you're backing up your photos and videos. To check is the content is backed up, login in to photos.google.com to checked for your backed up photos and videos.

However, if you're sure they were backed up, I recommend you looking for your video here:
If a photo/s is deleted from Google Photos, it would go to Trash/Bin for the next 60 days (after deletion). Unfortunately, if the photos aren't found in Trash or deleted from Trash, I'm afraid, you might not find them else where to recover them because Trash is the last resort to retrieve your lost/deleted photos.

Meanwhile, please uninstall and reinstall the Google Photos app on your iOS device and login with the same Google Account to check if this sorts the issue.

Let me know how it goes.

          Best,
          Amanda

Question: How to recover permanently deleted photos from trash

          Hi Rakshitha,

Welcome to the Google Photos Help Community.

I completely understand where you're coming from. If the photos are deleted permanently from the trash, unfortunately, there isn't any way to recover them. However, please check if you see the photos on trash as you can always recover photos from the Google Photos app trash.

If you have back up & sync on, photos and videos you delete will stay in your trash for 60 days. You can recover deleted items by following the below steps:

          1. Open the Google Photos app .
          2. At the top left, tap Menu , then Trash .
          3. Touch and hold the photo or video you want to recover.
          4. At the top right, tap Restore . That photo or video will be restored to your Google Photos library and added back into any albums it was in.
Incase, if you're unable to restore from the Google Photos, the following things could be the reasons:
          1. Photos and Videos moved to trash more than 60 days ago.
          2. Photos and Videos moved to trash, then emptied your trash.
          3. Photos and Videos moved to trash permanently deleted from your trash.
If you don't find the photos, I'd recommend you look for your photos here, signing in with all your Google accounts if you have more than one:
I'd also recommend you contact the Google Drive support team as they can restore photos up to 21 days after deletion if the photos are available in the Google Drive. You can click the "Missing or deleted files" entry of the contact form and request a phone call or any other option that works for you.

Check out these handy Help Center articles for more information on how to "See if you can restore deleted photos & videos" and "Find missing photos & videos".

            Keep me posted.

Another user has a problem with Google Photos a few months ago a photo they didn't want to upload to a random location on their camera storage appeared on a website. They are not sure of why this had happened when their camera was synced up with Google Photos and now are struggling to delete it. I've never had Google Photos upload my pictures to a random website before so this is a first for me personally.

Nothing is public on google photos - only selected pictures which are shared with a named friend are not fully private anymore of course - but that is your own choice.

            Hi Ed,

Welcome to the Google Photos Help Forum.

Unfortunately, it is not possible to change the order of photos from oldest to newest. That being said, if you would like to see this feature implemented in the future, I recommend leaving feedbackabout it through the following steps:
            • Open Google Photos.
            • Click on Menu.
            • Select Send feedback.
            • Click on Send.

            Hello William,

Thanks for stopping by the Google Photos Help Community.

To assist you better, could you please try and check on any other device or on web version of Google Photos logging with the same Google account?

Also, it would be great if you can share a screenshot of the screen where you see the photos and videos in black and white. Please ensure you mask any personal and/or account information in the screenshot that you'll share.

Meanwhile, I'd suggest you try some of these basic troubleshooting steps on your phone:

            1. Sign out from your Google account and sign in back.
            2. Uninstall and reinstall the Google Photos updates. (Go to Settings > Apps or Application Manager > Google Photos app > Uninstall Updates > OK). As long as you have a strong Internet connection (Wi-Fi or mobile data), your Play Store app will update to the latest version within a few minutes.
            3. Try clearing your app data which is the same as uninstalling and reinstalling the app. After you clear your data, sign in and turn "back up & sync" on again.Open your device's Settings app (not the Google Settings app).
            a. Tap Apps.
            b. Select Photos in the list.
            c. Tap Clear data.
            4. Restart your device.

I recently went on a trip to Thailand and took photos/videos on my Note 9 and Sony a6100. The issue is when i upload from the Sony. The time/date is correct. What is happening is that photos is organizing by the time of the photo but ignoring if AM or PM. For example

            Pic 1 - 9:05am
            Pic 2 - 9:06pm
            Pic 3 - 9:07am

Clearly Pic 2 should come after Pic 3. For whatever reason, photos is only seeing the time (not if its AM or PM). Is there anyway to correct this? Without the Am or PM, organizing the photos by time is pretty much useless. Please note, there is no issues when the photo is taken from Note 9. Only photos taken from Sony.

            Answer:

            @Jared

Google Photos extracts the "Date taken" from the photos and stores them in a database. Something must have gone wrong in your case.

The easiest way to correct seems:
            1. Find the photos with the wrong time. You can search on camera type (as shown in the i panel). If that does not work well you can upload these photos once more by drag & drop directly in a new album. The photos should not upload again, but will be added to the album.

            2. Select these photos and click 3-dots > Edit date & time. Select "Shift dates & Times". Adjust the date/time of the first photo. The others will be adjusted by the same amount. Note that this ONLY changes the time in Google's database. The (already correct) time in the photo remains unchanged.

            Answer:

            Hey,

Thank you so much for the response. Luckily I only uploaded a small portion of the photos as this issue happened last year with photos from a trip to Hawaii. Google Photos sees the correct "Date taken" when i click on one of the misplaced photos. In the information window, it will state that the photo was taken in the am or pm. I made sure to change the time/date on my Sony camera so this issue would not happen.

When viewing all photos, they are on order of time but not the am or pm (but the am or pm is there in the information for the photo). I did try the method you suggested before i posted to the help community and it really massed up the order. If a photo was taken at 8:05pm then it was bumped to 8:05am the next day. However, once i changed the photos back to the correct am or pm, they did end up back in the correct order. I obviously cant to this for the 100s of photos that i took.

Maybe i did it wrong? How are you able to highlight all the photos but only adjust the date and time of the first photo? Wont it adjust the date and time of all the highlighted photos?

Something i also noticed late last night was that the timezone on the photos from my Sony was different from the photos taken from the Note 9. When I got to Thailand, i only changed the date and time on the Sony, not the timezone (i did't think it would make a difference). My note 9, changed time/date/timezone automatically. I don't see why this would make a difference as the times of the phots taken on the Sony are technically correct.

As a test, would you happen to know how to change the timezone on each photo without the actual time of the photo changing? If i do it in google photos, it will change the time of the photo.

Thanks so much for your help with this!

            Answer:

            @Jared
"How are you able to highlight all the photos but only adjust the date and time of the first photo? Wont it adjust the date and time of all the highlighted photos? "
When you select multiple photos, click 3-dots > Edit date & time > Shift dates and times you get a small pop-up where you can edit date/time of the first photo. The text shown is: "Set start of range
This is the first in the group. Other selected photos will automatically shift based on this new date."
Thus by changing the date/time of the first photo, the time of all other selected photos will shift by the same amount.

"When viewing all photos, they are on order of time but not the am or pm"
I understand that they are not correctly sorted in Google Photos. I usually change date/time (when needed) in the photo before uploading, but your case is different if I understand well: the date/time is correct in the photo but not in Google Photos. Also "Time zone" is a difficult issue, but I only upload from a DSLR with no GPS thus do not suffer from it and have no experience. I expect/hope that changing the time in Photos gets them in the correct order.

Question: Videos not playing with Photos app on galaxy s8

The same videos play using es file explorer media player or video player

            Hi Dhawan,

Thanks for posting in the Google Photos Help Community.

To assist you better, could you please try the same on a different device/account (Android/computer, if possible) to check what happens next and to know if this is a device specific issue or account related issue.

Meanwhile, I'd suggest you try some of these basic troubleshooting steps one after the other, on your andriod device to narrow down the possibilities:

            Keep me posted.

            Best,
            Sonya

I've read some programs will help recover but u have to pay for them and root your phone and I'd rather not do that. Is that any other way to get them back?

            Hi Sabrina,

Welcome to the Google Photos Help Forum.

Could you please confirm if your photos were backed up in Google Photos? If yes, please check if the photos are present in the Trash of Google Photos and restore them through the below steps:
            • On your Android device, open the Google Photos app .
            • At the top left, tap Menu.
            • Click on Trash.
            • Touch and hold the photo or video you want to recover.
            • At the bottom, tap Restore. That photo or video will be restored to your Google Photos library and added back into any albums it was in.
But if you've already deleted the photos from the Trash from your Google Photos, there is no other way to restorethem.

That being said, if you would like to see this feature implemented in the future, I recommend leaving feedback about it through the following steps:
            • Open Google Photos.
            • Click on Menu.
            • Select Send feedback.
            • Click on Send.
The product team reviews the feedback regularly and uses it to better improve the product overtime.

For more information, please check the Help Center Article on restoring deleted photos & videos

Let me know if you have any other questions.

            Best,
            Emma
