I already activated the "Sync with Drive" checkbox.
No synchronization for 3 days so far (the whole folder has approximately 10k pictures in it).
Only photos appearing in Google Photos are those of with my phone synced Google Photos Folder.
Copying the files into that folder does not work too.
I appreciate any constructive inputs!

Hello Stefan,

Thanks for posting in the Google Photos Support Community.

Please ensure you're logged with the correct Google Account in Google Photos?

Could you please toggle the checkbox option in Google Photos setting (see screenshot) to sync Google Drive photos in Google Photos.

Hi Crystal,

there is no such thing as a default app for viewing your pictures, Google Photos and any Gallery you have installed act as portals to view the photos. They don't actually go anywhere, photos taken are stored in the camera folder and that folder can be seen by Google Photos or any other Gallery app.

Hope that makes sense,

When I install Google Photos on my iPad and it goes to backup/sync, will it backup/sync the highly compressed version on my iPad or will it backup/sync the original on iCloud. I understand Google will then compress to "High Quality Compression," but I want to make sure that the version being compressed is the original and not the already compressed version.

Answer:

Hi Jamie Smith 6711,

To quote another user:>

Cory Imdieke said:
I've been using Google Photos and iCloud Photos together for a while so I have some experience with this.

The two services play nicely together. The best option is to keep iCloud Photos turned on, along with optimize storage. Then install Google Photos and start the sync. Here's what happens.

At the beginning, there are (let's assume) no full-size photos on your phone, only in iCloud. Google Photos goes through every photo in your library, and wants to upload it. It requests the full-size photo from iCloud, which downloads to your phone and gets cached on the device. Then the full size photo is uploaded to Google, and Google Photos moves on to the next one. It keeps doing this until it's gone through all your photos.

The optimize storage setting is doing what it's supposed to do. At some point when the phone fills up, it will begin removing photos again like before. Let's say for example (using not real numbers) you have 5GB of free space on your device, which is enough to hold 500 images. Google Photos will download those 500 images from iCloud and upload to Google, then iCloud will see you're out of space and remove those images, and move on to the next batch of 500.

Google Photos and iCloud Photos don't really talk to each other much, all of this stuff just happens in the background automatically. When Google Photos asks for a photo, iCloud knows it needs to download it first so it does. Then when your phone fills up it knows it needs to clear off space.

It should pretty much manage itself without needing to do much. When you're totally done syncing with Google, you can just leave your phone and let iCloud delete the downloaded photos when it needs space.

I made the mistake of clicking "Sync photos & Videos from Google Drive" in Google photos, and all my photos are now duplicated, taking up virtually all my storage in Google Drive. I quickly unclicked this setting and it remains unchecked. If I go through and delete all the photos from my Google Drive, will this delete them from Google Photos? I know this seems like a stupid question, but I just want to be very sure before I start going through and deleting everything. Thanks!

Answer:

I don't understand why you got duplicates - then you must have stored the same pictures on Drive also - maybe long ago.
But by switching off the option, these dups are removed from Photos - so that problem is solved.
And what you have on Drive, can be deleted because that will take a lot of storage.

Maybe you still have the old Google Drive Sync app in use, else I don't understand why you have so much (old) pictures on Drive in normal folders. And you also may have started to use the fairly new Backup & Sync app which has uploaded all pictures to Photos, but also on Drive at a special location: https://drive.google.com/drive/computers
But that location is not synced by that option on Photos, but should not be deleted either.

Answer:

Hello Nicolette,

Please don't delete anything as Sync photos & Videos from Google Drive does not use any storage. If you have storage problems it is due to another reason.

Please share you storage information with us and also your Backup and Sync settings, similar to

Answer:

It is safe to Remove the Google Photos folder, but it normally does not use any storage. The numbers you see are the file size in Google Photos.  If you click to highlight one of the jpg files and click on the (i) below the Red N at top right, the select the Details pane you should see Storage used = 0 bytes.

At the top of the Settings page click View items using storage to get a list to decide what to delete.

You might also look at Gmail to find large attachments to delete

Don't forget to empty the Drive trash as the storage is still used until it is emptied.

Answer:

In Gmail you can search by size, start off with something like 100MB and lower it as you go
<See screenshot online>

Answer:

The option to show Google Photos in Google Drive must have been on in 2017, but for reasons unknown the folder got not correctly filled by Google because you should not have an endless list, but subfolders by year and per month. And then these monthfolders (01, 02 until 12) are filled with much less files.

But like Peter said: these files may look as duplicates, but normally they take no storage. And you can delete the folder completely to ged rid of this useless heap which is unsuitable for syncing to desktop.

But then there still must be other files in normal folders on Google Drive that take 5 GB of storage - just use https://drive.google.com/drive/quota to see where these non-zero bytes are stored and if they can be deleted without loosing your archive. Maybe still synced via the old Google Drive app.

About Gmail: attachments are limited to 25 MB, so it is a bit unlikely that there will be mails over 100 MB :-) Just choose "All mails" in the left column in your desktopbrowser (under More) and then select the oldest right up. Then you maybe astonished that your archive is still there for many years and then you can start selecting the full page and trash that amount etc, etc. until Januar 1, 2018
If you can't delete that archive for some formal reason, you may use Take-out for Gmail to make a backup on Mac first before starting with cleaning-up. See https://www.google.com/settings/takeout
If you keep your mail until the start of last year, Gmail still may use a couple of GB's - even after emptying its trash. But you can't do better :-)

Good luck

Question: How do I get back my photos

How can I get back photos

Hello Rani,

Welcome to the Google Photos Support Community.

If you've deleted them from Google Photos and want to restore them, please know that photos/videos deleted from the Google Photos library, goes to the Trash for the next 60 days. So, in case, you deleted it by mistake you can always restore it from Trash folder within those 60 days (post deletion). But, if you don't find it in Trash, probably it must have been deleted more that 60 days ago. Unfortunately, restoring your lost/deleted photos and videos from Trash is the last resort.

If no, please let me know.

Amanda

Hello Cheguri,

Thanks for posting in the Google Photos Support Community.

Are the photos in the device gallery of you lost phone? If yes, I'm afraid we couldn't be able to recover them.

If they were backed up to Google Photos, you can simply access your photos/videos by signing into photos.google.com (web browser) on your computer or on the Google Photos app on a phone with the same Google Account.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Question: Do Photo Titles and Albums sync from Mac Photos to Google Photos in Google Back up and Sync?

Hello!
I am helping a friend switch her workflows from a "local drive" system to a "cloud drive" system.  She is already on google drive, but it seems our real work is getting her picture/video workflow synced up.  I adore Google Photos and wanted to help her get her photos backed up to the cloud.

She has about 150,000 photos on her computer in Mac Photos (not synced to iCloud because the storage is too expensive).  We want to utilize the free storage of Google Photos as a backup. We've synced her phone (about 20k photos of the 150k) and now are trying to get the rest (about 130k photos) from her Mac Photos into Google Photos.  We have downloaded and installed Google Backup and Sync.

Here are the questions:

  • She has a ton of albums in Mac Photos that are named and organized.  Will Google Photos automatically recognize her albums?  If not, is there a way to set it so it will? Or do we need to manually export each album from Mac Photos to the desktop and upload each album to Google Photos?

  • She has captioned some of her photos in the "title" section in Mac Photos.  Is there a way to transfer those titles into the description section so Google Photos reads them?  I tried doing what is recommended in this article with Automator, but it seems the menus have changed since the the article was written, so it is not working properly.  I tried to manually upload one picture from Mac Photos to Google photos  with a title just to test how the title would show up in Google Photos...I can see that the photo title is uploaded the image title, but it is not searchable since it's in the description. For example, if the photo is named "Top Gun Halloween" and I search "Halloween\

    Answer:

"Will Google Photos automatically recognize her albums?"
Short answer: NO. Everything goes into the big library. Very disappointing for new users. She can upload manually to a new album one folder at a time ! When you use Backup & Sync the folders should be mirrored in Google Drive ("Computer" section)

"She has captioned some of her photos"
Captions I added before uploading (using Picasa3) show up in the "Description" field of the Info panel in Google Photos. Both file names and captions are searchable after some time needed for indexing.

"is there a way to just do a few at a time?"
Uploading manually one folder at a time if she wants all photos in albums. It must also be possible to sync a limited set using Backup & Sync, but I do not use it (I upload all new folders manually, and the old ones were already there from Picasaweb) thus cannot help here.

All I've known to do is to delete the folders but each sticker creates its own folder. I can't even figure out where it's finding them. I don't have backups selected for facebook... I'm so lost! Answer:

    Hello Devra,

Thanks for posting in the Google Photos Support Community.

Google Photos backs up everything that's there in your device gallery (Device/SD card storage). These emojis/cartoon stickers from messenger may have got downloaded to your device and so they appear in Google Photos (cloud).

It can be possible that the photos weren't uploaded successfully to Google Photos (cloud) and also make sure you're logged in to Google Photos with the same Google Account that you used during the backup. Photos/videos that are not synced or backed up, will still appear in Google Photos and will have this icon  (which means not synced/backed up) or some photos/videos will also show up with the two arrows in a circle mean backup is in progress.

Once the upload is complete there will be no icon on any photos/videos. Often, many of us misinterpret that they are all backed up because the photos/videos show up in Google Photos and we over see the icons on each photo.

If no, please give the below steps a try to help resolve the issue:
    • Close the Google Photos app and re-launch it.
    • Sign out and sign back in to Google Photos with the same Google Account.

If a photo/s is deleted from Google Photos, it would go to Trash/Bin for the next 60 days (after deletion). Unfortunately, if the photos aren't found in Trash or deleted from Trash, I'm afraid, you might not find them else where to recover them because Trash is the last resort to retrieve your lost/deleted photos.

Meanwhile, please uninstall and reinstall the Google Photos app on your iOS device and login with the same Google Account to check if this sorts the issue.

Let me know how it goes.

    Best,
    Amanda

"Group Similar Faces" option is not in settings. Up till about 2 weeks ago it was there and I was able to use face recognition. All of sudden it is missing and all my albums of specific people are gone as well. I have cleared the chrome cache, signed out of my accounts and back in etc. This is a work account and half of my coworkers has this function and the other half it is missing as well.  How do I get face recognition back? I use this frequently.

    Answer:

    Greg and Hans,

    The issue has been reported.

On Nov. 6, 2019, janvb wrote, "I submitted a bug report signaling that "Group similar faces" is missing at least for some users in countries where it used to be available, even in US.

    Answer:

That link (above) from with the reported issue is no longer valid. There is nothing on that link page. Has anyone anywhere heard anytihng concrete about this problem? It works on my personal account just fine as always. The option completely disappeared on our education account. I'd been using it regularly up until about 2 weeks ago and the option in the Settings just completely disappeared. Super frustrated. Would love to hear from Google. Cannot even contact anyone on this as they don't actually support their product.

I guess the other thread I linked to was deleted.

The timing of this is suspiciously close to when they released the update to allow manual edits of face groups to reassign individual people. It looks like Google released something without testing it properly.

    Answer:

Am facing the same problem... My other account on same device is showing group facing option but when I logged in to different account it doesn't shows the group facing option... It is frustrating 😐😐

    Answer:

Same problem here with our Education accounts.  I hope they get this back soon and I hope I don't lose all of the previous groupings I had set up.

    Answer:

To be more clear, I do have the People section on my iPhone, but names are now gone. But all People/Faces groupings are gone from my Mac's view of Google Photos and there's nothing in Settings to let me add it back.

I am trying to combine 1000 photos into 500 image files (so 2 photos per image file). I'm making a scrapbook and would like to develop these 500 images 4R, and end up with 1000 2R sized photos. I used to do this one by one on an app but that is too time consuming! Is there an automated way to do this on Google Photos?

    Answer:

    Hi Wendy,

Google Photos doesn't support what you'd like to do. As a workaround you may try making a Collage from a number of photos by selecting them, clicking +, and then clicking Collage. However, there's likely a limit on the maximum number of photos a Collage can have, possibly around a few dozens or less.

    I have a problem

    Hi Hak,

I recommend that you look for your photos here, signing in with all your Google accounts if you have more than one:
    • photos.google.com
    • photos.google.com/archive
    • photos.google.com/trash
    • get.google.com/albumarchive
    • drive.google.com
    • other online photo or file storage services you use (e.g. Dropbox, OneDrive, Amazon)

Question: My "permanently deleted" photos keep coming back. How can I delete them forever?

I have deleted them repeatedly, then emptied the trash.

    Hi Chris,

did you try clearing the Trash from both the Google Photos Android app and the https://photos.google.com/trash website?

Did you get an answer? Mine are now doing this too. It's a recent problem for me and photos I deleted ages ago just appeared today (again). I'd already emptied my bin which is what I had to do to get them off my phone as well as my lap top. Very frustrating.
