If you deleted the images from within the Google Photos App on your old phone after backing them up, they would have been deleted from Google Photos cloud as well. (Free-Up-Space, not Delete, is used to remove images from phone only.) The good news is that if this is what happened, and if it happened less than 60 days ago, the previously backed up images should be available in the Trash. Below is some general information on lost images, including how to look in Trash. Good luck.
Needless to say, hope this can be solved as I can imagine how frustrated you must be. An initial question for you is whether you ever recall seeing your images anywhere but on the phone (or similar device) that you used to take the pictures. More specifically, did you ever see your images at Google Photos (photos.google.com) on a browser of your laptop or tablet or other device? If not, though this is no comfort, I know, it is possible that the images were never actually backed up but perhaps merely queued to back up (a distinction that is sadly confusing on many phones and tablets). If the answer is that you have viewed the photos at the Google Photos site, there is an excellent chance that they are there and that you will be able to recover them.
In any case, in searching Google for missing images you should check the following sites (being sure to sign in with the same Google Account you used on the phone or device with which you took the pictures):
- drive.google.com (in the Google Photos Folder, if one exists)
- https://photos.google.com/search/_tra_ (Recently Added)
- https://photos.google.com/albums (People, Places, Things, etc.)
If you still can't find the images, and you no longer have your old phone, I'm afraid that there is nothing that can be done.

- You moved it to bin more than 60 days ago
- You moved it to bin, then emptied your trash
- You permanently deleted it from your bin.

But I was quickly disappointed because when I delete photos on my side those photos still show up on my partner's side. So we traveled to Costa Rica. Took thousands of photos together. I spent hours editing, deleting, sorting, and organizing only to realize my partner didn't see any of those changes. What's the point of a shared account if sharing abilities aren't available? And who wants duplicates of all photos? Suddenly Google has created a huge mess for us because we have tens of thousands of duplicate photos between the two of us. And we have to pay for all that space.

You aren't doing anything wrong, but there are different ways which you can set it up and manage your workflow based on your preferences. Even with that, while your partner MAY see the impact of Editing and Deleting, they are unlikely to see the impact of "sorting, and organizing" (since Shared Libraries are that, the Chronological Photos stream, not Shared Albums).
Your partner apparently has "Add to library" enabled in their Partner Library settings. If they don't want to have images which you subsequently delete, then they probably want to turn this off. There are tradeoffs to turning "Add to library" (e.g., if you delete something in error). Also, keep in mind that even if "Add to library" is off the recipient can manually save it (so it is not always possible to unwrite embarrassing history).
People have different preferences. My partner shares all of their photos with me. I add them all to my Library. Yes, I need to delete screenshots, etc., which are of no interest to me, but having a centralized source of all our images (e.g., so we can back them up centrally periodically) is worth it.

Some people use (or create a special) single Google Account and share it for Google Photos. I believe this would be awkward (in different ways depending on how it would be done) related to the use of Google Contacts and possible confusion with other Google services (Gmail, etc.).

I`ve recently found out my photos and videos that were taken during 1-5 July are missing with no trace of finding them anymore neither in the phone Gallery or the Google Photo platform (including the trash bin).

I’m sorry, it’s not possible to recover photos permanently deleted from the Google Photos Trash. However, you may install to your Android device a deleted photo recovery app https://play.google.com/store/search?q=recover%20deleted%20photos&c=apps and run a scan for anything to recover.
In addition I recommend that you contact the Google Drive support team to see if any deleted files may be recovered. Just open the Google Drive https://support.google.com/drive/?hl=en&authuser=0#topic=14940&contact=1 contact form, click Missing or deleted files, select a contact option, and be sure to tell them you permanently deleted files in Google Drive.

I edited several photos that were about 15 MB and adjusted some lighting and coloring in google photos. When I downloaded the photos they are now about 4 MB. Why did the resolution decrease so much? The adjustments I made were pretty subtle.

If you backed up your photos in High Quality, instead of original, they will be compressed by Google Photos to a small file size, which will stay small after editing. So perhaps your image files took up 15MB in original size but only 4MB backed up in High Quality.

After double checking, it shows the resolution of the edited and original photos as the same. So I guess I'm just not sure how the size could become 1/4 the amount if the resolution stayed the same.

As far as I can tell, using the backup and sync desktop app, after a file is synced with google photos no changes made to the photos are reflected in the google photos version of the file. When I change the date taken or even the name of the file itself, I get the desktop notification from backup and sync that the file is being updated. In fact the google drive version of the photo is updated, but the google photos version of the file remains unchanged.

Alternatively, and this is just guess, is that you remember seeing the image file in 15 mega pixels, not megabits and when you saw the downloaded file size in MB you compared that to your recollection of MP.

It is a good question. What editing did you do? Cropping or perhaps converting to monotone could reduce the size significantly. Have you tried to do the same with another image (perhaps a duplicate that you can experiment with)? Let me know and I'll experiment some on my end as well.

You uploaded a 15 MB photo in "Original Quality". By editing and downloading a new JPEG must be created. It looks like Google Photos knows only one compression mode: "High Quality". That would perfectly explain the reduction is file size (not "resolution" which is related to number of pixels - is only reduced if > 16MP). The original (unedited) photos is also still available (3-dots > download original).

That makes no difference. Your camera used for example quality 90, but when Google compresses at quality 70 even the slightest change leads to a JPEG with much higher compression. Note that a user found out that the compression was probably increased (= quality reduced) recently for new uploads without notice. See https://support.google.com/photos/thread/241640. I keep the originals elsewhere !

That of course should not happen. No photo having < 16MP should be downscaled.
I experienced something similar with photos in albums shared with me: some photos were downscaled to 1600 pixels when I added them to my library. It turned out that I had to wait a while: the smaller photos were replaced by the correct ones after some time. Can you check again and let us know whether the pixel count becomes correct after some time (minutes)?

As far as I can tell, using the backup and sync desktop app, after a file is synced with google photos no changes made to the photos are reflected in the google photos version of the file. When I change the date taken or even the name of the file itself, I get the desktop notification from backup and sync that the file is being updated. This is disappointing because it requires me to find any file locally that has an incorrect date for example, delete it from google photos, change the date, then reupload the file in order to correct the date. This is cumbersome and not really a sync'ed photo solution.
Am I doing something wrong, or is there no way to have a google photos file reflect any change made locally via the desktop backup and sync app?
I underestand that I can edit the date taken info from the google photos interface but this does not actually alter the photo file itself, only the google photos database, and this is not an acceptable solution for me.

Sorry Rich, that is how Backup and Sync is designed. Backup with reference to photos backed up under My Computer to Google Photos, Sync with reference to files synced to Google Drive. There is no sync across the divide from Google Drive to Google Photos except for deletions depending on preferences, Best, Peter
