WATCH: Obama's Iranian Friends Chant THIS And Burn Our Flag After Trump Pulled Iran Deal
overnight Iranian lawmakers burned a US flag in their Iranian parliament vowing
to increase spending on its ballistic missile program which had been working
on for years which is all of course a direct response to president Trump's
announcement pulling out of the nuke deal yesterday it was a move a long time
coming president Trump had vowed in the earliest days of the campaign to scrap
the Iran nuclear deal today he did us it is clear to me that we cannot prevent an
Iranian nuclear bomb under the decaying and rotten structure of the current
agreement the Iran deal is defective at its core the announcement brought a
sharp reaction from Iranian president Hassan rouhani who said Iran would
immediately begin negotiations with America's European allies China and
Russia to save the deal adding if they couldn't reach agreement Iran will start
enriching uranium quote more than before in the coming weeks
president Trump today warned Iran not to go down that road if the regime
continues its nuclear aspirations it will have bigger problems than it has
ever had before the president made the decision despite pleas from France the
UK and Germany to stay in the deal in a joint statement the three nations saying
we urge the u.s. to ensure that the structures of the jcpoa can remain
intact and to avoid taking action which obstructs its full implementation by all
other parties to the deal president Trump's announcement starts at countdown
clock running 90 days to the re-imposition of most sanctions we will
be instituting the highest level of economic sanction any nation that helps
Iran in its quest for nuclear weapons could also be strongly sanctioned by the
United States America will not be held hostage to nuclear blackmail we will not
allow American cities to be threatened with destruction in a statement
President Obama called the decision misguided a sear
mistake saying it could embolden an already dangerous regime threatened our
friends with destruction pose unacceptable dangers to America's own
security and trigger an arms race in the world's most dangerous region President
Trump insists the deal President Obama helped craft allowed Iran to continue
down the path to a nuclear breakout saying a nation the chance death to
America will never be allowed to possess a nuclear weapon today's action sends a
critical message the United States no longer makes empty threats
when I make promises I keep them Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer didn't
support the Iran deal but opposes the US withdrawal saying Iran wasn't violating
the agreement plus what would president Trump replace it with this is a little
like replace and repeal they had these words they used them in the campaign and
they don't have a real plan here while there is nothing at the moment to
replace the joint comprehensive plan of action President Trump says he is
willing to negotiate a new deal one that covers Iran's short term nuclear program
long term nuclear ambitions its ballistic missile program and
destabilizing regional behavior the fact is they are going to want to make a new
and lasting deal one that benefits all of Iran and the Iranian people when they
do I am ready willing and able great things can happen for Iran and great
things can happen for the peace and stability that we all want in the Middle
East John Alterman director of the Middle
East program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies
that's a nonpartisan nonprofit research organization he also served at the State
Department under president george w bush as a member of the policy planning staff
so it's nice of you to be here thank you first of all your initial reaction to
what happened I was actually surprised that the president was was so
parsimonious and what he said he just said we're withdrawing from the deal
clearly the deal doesn't really have a way to withdraw and I had to go to
a Treasury Department website to understand which on Roberts just
explained that there's a 90-day window 180 day window I I thought the president
would be more in the weeds on what he was doing just said we're we are done
with this deal and when you say you're done with it did this offer did this
deal offer a way to pull out of itself or are we just now saying we are going
to violate this deal our rules on us were the following and now we're
changing them the deal didn't have a provision for withdrawal we're
essentially just saying we are willfully in violation the deal does have a way
for the Iranians to complain that we're not complying whether the Iranians are
going to go that way or not I don't know it seems to me that that our European
allies have a lot of hard decisions to make about how they're going to treat
the United States I think countries like China and Russia who were parties to the
deal but have their own views of the United States see some opportunities I
think frankly Iran may see some opportunities to try to split the United
States from its allies in many ways that may be their best course going forward
looks like Hassan rouhani the the president has just announced that that
he will negotiate with that he was as ordered his foreign leaders to negotiate
with other pardon parties to this deal and then he says somewhat threatening
Lee I might add quoting here if negotiations fail the Islamic Republic
will enrich uranium more than before dot-dot-dot in next week's what are we
to make of that I think the Iranians are trying to show
that that they have a strong hand they're not weak they're not scared I
don't think the Iranians ever have such a strong hand their economy frankly with
all of their oil is about the size of the state of Maryland it's not a global
superpower they're coming up against much stronger countries I think they're
gonna play this for what they can play it again I think that the president has
a hard task ahead of him because when the deal was struck the world was with
us and the u.s. just withdrew the sanctions that applied to other
countries secondary sanctions it's still illegal for Americans to do business
with Iran whether other countries are going to go along with the Rhian
position of American sanctions under this context when the president
has just said we could have had a better deal I think remains to be seen how the
French decide to play this the British the Germans let alone that Chinese and
the Russians I think it's going to be a very interesting several months ahead
when it comes time to it when it comes to Iran policy I'm out of time but
before we go internally in Iran Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was the was the hardline
leader of that Islamic state prior to Hassan rouhani
Hassan rouhani Oh a more moderate there's been extreme push and pull and
in friction within the country on who will have control of this government
does what effect does this have on that relationship between the moderates was
rouhani at the head and and the more hardliners well frankly Shep I wouldn't
call Hassan Rowhani a moderate I'd call him a pragmatist I think he decided to
augment in Assad needlessly out the world angry at Iran II helped unite the
world to put the sanctions on Iran that brought them to the jcpoa but but
internally you know what did that get it the deal well no the deal the United
States just pulled out of the deal what does this do what does this do to the
man with whom we were negotiating inside Iran and how does it affect us on the
world stage well I don't think he was ever our
friend I think he was a pragmatist suitors who wanted to lower tensions
whether he's going to to be a pragmatist who wants to raise tensions raise
tensions in some ways I don't think he's a moderate like Mohamed HUD to me was
really trying to reform the system I think he's a conservative trying to
preserve the system who said that after dinner jihad was crazy he got everybody
against Iran that didn't help you Ron at all how he's going to play this I think
you have to look at Hassan rouhani as one of the great political strategists a
great political tactician as well he's not just going to take this long down
he's going to try to play this to his advantage internally and on the
international stage John Alterman director of the Middle
East program at the Center for Strategic and national studies thank you so much
who's good to see you thanks chef let's yes general Jerry Boykin general I'm
very good at you as always they're claiming that is are the co signatures
on this agreement they're upset and they're not going along or so far
hinting they're not going along you believe them well I believe them in
a short term but look I think this is a sterling example of international
leadership I'm really proud of our president for for what he has done in
the decision he made today and I think that what you're going to see is the
same thing when he moved the embassy what he said that he's going to move the
embassy to Jerusalem they were like everybody he came back with a very
negative reaction but now you're seeing incrementally one by one all the
countries are making the same decision I think we're gonna see a similar thing in
this you know another thing I see and this goes back to my little nerdy world
of economic deals general fuel indulge me is a pattern here a pragmatic pattern
more pragmatic than I think critics of the president have given him and that is
that it's got a 90 days sort of a cooling period before it would revert
back to some of the sanctions hoping I would assume that either a new deal
could be had or the constructs of one could be at what do you think what do
you think of it ya know it's 90 to 180 days so I think that I think that's a
very positive thing too because I think this gives the European countries in
particular I'm not you know China and Russia they're gonna do their own thing
but I think the European countries they are the key here and I think that this
gives them time enough to save face and to negotiate in some way not only with
each other but certainly with Iran to come up with something that either would
make this deal more palatable or to get out of it altogether themselves you
don't generally wonder about that if you think about it much of the things that
Iran wanted out of the deal originally a god got a lot of money got remember
pallets of cash that was shipped to them on private jets to say nothing of
billions that was unfrozen and then they hand it back to them so you could make
the cynical point here that there's a little in it for the Iranians to want to
negotiate with the president what do you think well I think that there is
certainly an incentive for the Iranians in that what they don't want to do is
they don't want to see the Europeans I mean it's bad enough that the Americans
slap the sanctions on them but they certainly don't want to see the
Europeans do it because Europeans have made huge investments since the
was signed in 2015 and they don't want to lose those investments they don't
want to lose those businesses or corporations that have established
business with the Iranians that that would be a severe blow to their economy
well I have you sir I'd be remiss if I didn't mention John Kerry was apoplectic
about this speaking and Italy a lot of people say he's been working behind the
scenes sometimes not even behind the scenes to push foreign leaders to push
back at this what did you make of that hey this was supposed to be John Kerry's
legacy and and his legacy has just been destroyed with one decision by our
president but stop and think about this you now have Mike Pompeo on the way to
North Korea do you think Mike Pompeo might be going in and a big stronger
position than he would have been if we had stayed in this deal I think so Kerry
went in with nothing with nothing and he got nothing out of this all right there
because they're similar seasoning on this and saying speaking of those North
Korea negotiation sir that Americans can willy-nilly turned their back on on
deals here and I know this was not a treaty and I knew you and I would gotten
into this in the past and that maybe the North Koreans will think well what if
they you know a little of a sudden change their mind with us I don't I do
not see that at all I don't see that being the case I see that as Kim jong-un
recognizing that Donald Trump is a substantially different guy with a
different agenda than in our previous president and I see him looking at this
as an issue of strength and leadership on our part or at least on the part of
the American president general it's always an honor to have you thank you
very much for joining us general Jerry Boykin a US Army former US Green Beret
thank you for your service to this country remarkable service attack thank
you god bless you and God bless america
