Jeh Johnson: I hope Trump learns from his Charlottesville response

Former Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson said Friday that the nation depends on its president to reduce tension, not increase it, in the hours and days after tragedies like the deadly white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, earlier this month.

Johnson, in an interview with MSNBC's "Morning Joe," said he hopes President Donald Trump can learn from his Charlottesville response — which was widely rebuked across the political spectrum — or at least learn to lean on others when faced with similar situations.

"Charlottesville was a real tragedy," Johnson said. "Charlottesville was an alarming situation, and in that type of situation, we depend upon our president to bring us together, to lower the temperature, not raise the temperature.

And so I hope that this president has the ability to learn from episodes like that or at least call upon people for advice about how to deal with complicated situations like Charlottesville.".

Trump, in both his initial response to the white supremacist marches in Charlottesville and at a news conference days after the incidents, said blame for the resulting violence should be shared between the hate groups and counter-demonstrators who had gathered to protest the supremacists presence.

At a news conference inside Trump Tower, Trump said there had been "very fine people" on both sides of the clashes.

The president revisited the issue this week at a Tuesday rally in Phoenix, where he insisted that the media had been unfair in its coverage of his response to the Charlottesville protests.

Before a raucous crowd of thousands of supporters, Trump reread his initial statement, omitting the portion where he said there had been hatred, bigotry and violence "on many sides.".

Following that rally, former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper called Trump's Phoenix remarks, in which he also criticized the media and Arizona's Republican senators, "objectionable on so many levels." Clapper told CNN that "I don't know when I've listened and watched something like this from a president that I found more disturbing" and questioned the president's fitness for office.

He said the notion that Trump has access to the nation's nuclear arsenal is "pretty damn scary.". Asked about those remarks, Johnson praised his former Obama administration colleague but stopped short of seconding Clapper's questioning of the president's fitness for office.

"Jim Clapper's a good man and a great American, in my opinion," Johnson said. "And Jim is about as apolitical as they come. So I have high regard for his judgment and assessments.".

"Do you share his assessment that this president may not be fit?" MSNBC host Willie Geist asked.

"Well, no, Im not prepared to make judgments like that. I am, obviously, concerned about a number of things this president has said and done, as are a number of people — Republicans and Democrats," Johnson replied.

"And we have a lot of issues that we need to deal with. You know, a lot of us are caught up in the politics of this. It's good for ratings, but it's not very good for the welfare of the country.".

Speaker Ryan condemned President Trump for pardoning 85 year-old Joe Arpaio.

House Speaker Paul Ryan on Saturday criticized President Donald Trump for pardoning a former

Arizona sheriff, Joe Arpaio, becoming the highest-ranking Republican to object to the

move.

"The speaker does not agree with the decision," said Ryan spokesman Doug Andres.

"Law-enforcement officials have a special responsibility to respect the rights of everyone

in the United States.

We should not allow anyone to believe that responsibility is diminished by this pardon."

The White House didn't immediately respond to a request for comment about Mr. Ryan's

statement.

On Friday, the White House announced that the president had pardoned Mr. Arpaio, known

as an immigration hard-liner who had been sheriff of Maricopa County for 24 years before

he lost a re-election bid last year.

I want to start by asking a rhetorical question here.

Does Donald Trump have any friends left?

Of course, the answer is, he's got a few, but certainly not as many as he once had,

and to be honest, not even as many as he had two weeks ago.

This past week, a group of rabbis in the United States, who hold an annual call with the president,

regardless of who that president is, decided that this year they were going to cancel the

call.

They did that because of Donald Trump's disgusting response to the violence that took place two

weeks ago in Charlottesville.

Furthermore, members of Donald Trump's infrastructure council resigned earlier this week, again

in response to his response to the attacks in Charlottesville, as well as I think a little

bit had to do with the things that he said during his rally in Phoenix.

Scientists this week abandoned the White House again.

They resigned their posts because they couldn't take the administration's constant assault

on climate change, something we've seen a lot of from the scientific community since

Donald Trump took office.

We have Catholic nuns out there calling out republicans.

Independents are starting to abandon Trump, and that is the group that he needed in order

to win, because luckily there aren't enough white supremacists in this country to solely

pick the president.

Without those independents, there's no possible way Donald Trump could win reelection.

Polls show that a majority of Americans are ready to begin impeachment proceedings.

Republicans in congress aren't willing to say that Donald Trump will be their nominee

in 2020.

John Kasich polls better than Donald Trump in head-to-head polls of republican primary

Bernie Sanders beats Donald Trump in a head-to-head match for president in 2020.

Do you see where I'm going with this.

There is no one left to defend Donald Trump, unless of course you count the folks at Fox

News, but that's not enough to sway voters anymore, because earlier this week, MSNBC

became the most watched cable network in the United States for the first time ever.

There's nobody left.

The White House has stopped sending out their goon squad to TV shows, because even they

can't come up with a cogent response on how to deal with the president's actions.

People are resigning from this administration left and right.

Donald Trump is alienating everyone.

A lot of it recently has to do with his response to Charlottesville, but this was happening

even before that, and it's only gotten worse since then.

Donald Trump's list of allies is dwindling, and pretty soon it's going to be down to zero.

We might even see a day when Kellyanne Conway herself has to say, "You know what?

Enough's enough.

I can't physically do this anymore."

It's only a matter of time.

The reason this is important is because when we have such an incompetent, insecure, narcissistic

president at the helm, the 25th amendment starts looking look a real possibility, if

congress decides to invoke that, if Mike Pence decides to invoke that.

And if Donald Trump continues to alienate all of his allies in this country, especially

those in congress, it's going to be very easy to remove him from office.

Trust me, I want that more than anyone, but I'm just talking about from Donald Trump's

own perspective, not a real smart move.

You're proving that you're really not a smart guy.

You should start embracing your friendships.

Maybe tone down the rhetoric a little bit.

Maybe stay off Twitter for a couple days, because the more the public sees you, the

more they get to know you, the more they read your tweets, the less they like you.

CEOs have abandoned you.

Rabbis have abandoned you.

Catholics are abandoning you.

Millionaires and billionaire donors of the republican party has abandoned you.

Independents have abandoned you, and about 20 to 30% of the republican party has abandoned

you.

Maybe it's time you stop calling that fake news, and understand that you are actually

the problem.

What do Senators Murkowski, McCain, McConnell, Flake, Graham, Heller and House Speaker Paul

Ryan all have in common other than the fact that they have horrible policies because they're

all Republicans?

If you answered that those are just a few of the Republicans holding public office that

Donald Trump has attacked on Twitter in the last few weeks, you are correct.

The list of Republican, sitting Republican Representatives and Senators that Donald Trump

has publicly gone after, both on Twitter and during speeches and rallies is growing by

the day.

No one at this point is safe.

He is blaming these Republicans for things that didn't happen, although he thinks they

did.

He's preemptively blaming them for things that have yet to happen and may not even happen.

But the more important thing is that he is doing it publicly.

He's doing it without shame and he's doing it to be a bully to get them on his side.

One of the more interesting stories that emerged this past week was that Donald Trump has been

calling many Republicans in the Senate, not just Mitch McConnell, but he was one of them,

and that happens to be the most public feud going on right now.

But he has called several Senate Republicans to yell at them for not stopping this Russia

investigation and for not going out there and publicly defending and privately defending

Donald Trump, the President of the United States.

Then he proceeds to go on Twitter and talk bad about these people, talk about how horrible

they are, how weak they are, how spineless they are, how awful they are.

Then he expects them to be loyal to him?

I've said this many times in the past and I'm going to have to apparently keep saying

it til the day he leaves office, but Donald Trump is not a smart human being.

Anyone who thinks he is, is also not a smart human being.

Donald Trump is in a position right now where there is an ongoing investigation that threatens

to take down his entire presidency.

On top of that, we're hearing an awful lot of rumblings about invoking the 25th amendment

to remove him from office, which doesn't require any kind of trial or prosecution.

You just get enough members of the House and Senate and the Vice-President to go along

with it, and boom, the President's gone.

That's something that's a very real possibility and don't think that Mike Pence isn't chomping

at the bit to get that done.

When your only hope for staying in office until 2020 are these Republicans in the Senate

and to a lesser extent the House, does it make a lot of sense to go out there and attack

them publicly?

Does it make a lot of sense to cuss them out on the phone like you did with Mitch McConnell?

I don't think there's anybody in this country that would think, yeah, you know what?

That is a winning political strategy.

Good job, sir.

I think most people are starting to look at this as what the hell is wrong with you?

Even if your personal insults and attacks weren't enough, think about the damage you're

causing to the Republican Party.

Do you think those wealthy Republican donors are just going to sit there and let you attack

their investments?

Because that's what these people are.

They're assets of major corporations and major Republican donors like the Koch brothers or

Sheldon Adelson.

They're not human beings to these wealthy donors.

They are their assets.

When you start going out there and attacking them, there's going to start to be some rumblings

of impeachment among that wealthy donor class.

The donor class that overwhelmingly supported Mike Pence over you.

Don't think that there is not talk behind the scenes with these people and possibly

even with Mike Pence because they have been meeting with him privately, of getting you

out of office.

If I were you, Mr. Trump, I wouldn't be attacking people on Twitter.

I'd be sending them flowers, telling them how nice they are and how great they are and

what a great job they're doing.

Because at the end of the day, those very people that you're attacking and alienating

and demonizing in front of the American public, those are the only people that can save your

job.

Trump Supporters Admit They Trust Facebook More Than Real News - Duration: 4:21.

There's plenty of people in this country, most of them on the left, who say that we

need to open up a dialogue with Trump supporters.

We need to open up a dialogue with some of those hardcore Republicans and really find

out how we can switch them over to the Democratic side.

To that, I will direct you to CNN's panel of Trump supporters from earlier this week,

where they asked the Trump supporters what they thought of the racism in Charlottesville.

Here is what most of them said.

They do not believe that it was real.

They believe it was a false flag because they saw something on Facebook that told them that.

They didn't pay attention to the news.

According to one woman on the panel, she said, "I trust Facebook more than I trust the news."

To which the majority of that panel if not all of them seemed to agree.

That's why these people are unreachable.

That's why opening up a dialogue with them does not work.

They trust anything they see on Facebook, and even though Facebook claims to be cracking

down on fake news, that doesn't mean that these people are going to stop seeing articles

from Infowars, Alex Jones's group, or from Brietbart.

Articles that blatantly lie to the American public to get some clicks, to get some ratings,

to get some advertisers because that's all it's about.

There's not a word of truth to it, yet Republican Trump supporters will believe it if it doesn't

come from the corporate controlled media.

Again, I know, corporate controlled media's awful in this country.

But still not as bad as Brietbart.

I mean they may not get it right 100% of the time, but I'm willing to say that 75% of the

time, they get it right.

There are plenty of stories that they won't talk about altogether because it'll harm their

advertisers, and that hurts the American public.

That's a lie by omission, I guess.

But they're not out there blatantly lying to us, unless of course the outlet is Fox

News.

And unfortunately, due to the way that media laws are written in this country, the media

is legally allowed to lie to us.

As long as it doesn't go into slander or defamation or libel, it's fair game folks.

The media can lie, and these Trump supporters absolutely love it when they do because to

them lies are the truth.

They have made it clear, not just through this CNN panel, but through other polls and

their reactions to news stories that they want to believe the lies.

They will not accept the truth.

So again, to all of those liberals, Democrats whatever, that say we need to open a dialogue,

or maybe I'm going to talk to them and debate them.

Maybe I can talk some sense into them.

Let it go.

There is no sense in arguing with a brick wall, and in most instances, that's what these

people are.

Now if you've got a moderate Republican that admits they're on the fence about issues,

talk to them, explain things to them.

Help them.

You may not convince them, but if they have an open mind, that's when you can approach.

These people who've made up their minds about the world, and who say they'll stick with

Donald Trump no matter what, no matter what he says, no matter what he does.

They believe Brietbart over CNN.

Don't waste your time.

Block them, get them off your Facebook feed.

I don't care if it's your own mother.

Stop trying to have political arguments with people who do not want to use facts and statistics

and only argue based on some stupid thing they saw forwarded by a million different

people on Facebook.

Spend your time in the political debates with people whose minds you might actually be able

to change.

Just always come armed with the facts.

Don't bother arguing with idiots because they're going to drag them down to your level, then

beat you with experience.

Campaign promises that won them hard-fought elections don't seem to stick around in

That isn't the case with Donald Trump though; including a little promise he made about social

security and not leaving seniors behind.

Trump has refused to levy cuts in the Social Security program or Medicare, saving seniors

much needed money.

Last month, White House Budget Director Mick Mulvaney placed a report on his desk that

looked at possible cuts to be placed in Trump's 2017 budget.

I laid to him the options," said Mulvaney.

"And Trump looked at one and said, 'What is that?'

And I said, 'Well, that's a change to part of Social Security.'

He said, 'No.

No.

He said, 'I told people I wouldn't change that when I ran.

And I'm not going to change that.

Take that off the list.'"

Social Security has been under attack by politicians on both sides of the aisle.

Seniors have paid into the program during their entire lives and they deserve to enjoy

its benefits after a lifetime of working hard.

We finally have a president who will take major action to stand up for our seniors.

Instead of attacking Social Security, Trump should look at other spending reforms.

Fraud in the food stamps program alone is at an all-time high, costing taxpayers over

$800 million annually.

Getting rid of waste and abuse would go a long way towards making our government more

efficient and accountable.

No one has done anything remotely beneficial for seniors in at least 16 years.

President Trump continues to prove that he can make America great again."

President Trump on Sunday afternoon held a second Cabinet meeting on Hurricane Harvey

to shore up response and recovery efforts, according to the White House.

Trump along with Vice President Pence led a video teleconference with Cabinet and senior

administration officials "to discuss ongoing federal support for Hurricane Harvey response

and recovery," the White House press office said in a statement.

Trump will also visit affected areas in Texas on Tuesday, according to the White House.

The storm has hammered Texas since Friday, when it first made landfall as a Category

4 hurricane.

The federal government has 5,000 people on site in Texas and Louisiana, where the storm

continues to bring torrential rain and flooding.

Trump, who spent Sunday morning praising the federal government's response to Harvey

in a series of tweets, "continued to stress his expectation that all departments and agencies

stay fully committed to supporting the Governors of Texas and Louisiana and his number one

priority of saving lives," the statement reads.

Vice President Mike Pence in a tweet on Sunday emphasized the White House statement that

Trump's top priority is saving lives.

"POTUS stressed all depts & agencies stay committed to supporting Govs of Texas & Louisiana

& his number one priority of saving lives," Pence wrote on Twitter, including a readout

of the teleconference the two held earlier.

The statement adds that Trump "reminded everyone that search and rescue efforts will

transition to mass care, restoring power, providing life-sustaining necessities for

the population that sheltered in place, and economic recovery."

He also "urged survivors impacted by the storm to continue to heed the instructions

of their State and local officials."

At least five deaths from the storm have been reported.

The director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency said recovery efforts would take years.

This is "probably the worst disaster the state's seen," Brock Long told The Washington Post

of Texas.

Trump Supporters Will Be Hit Hardest By Climate Change Costs - Duration: 4:45.

A new report came out this week titled Estimating Economic Damage from Climate Change in the

United States, and guess what folks?

As it turns out, those people who tend to deny that climate change exists or those people

who continue to vote for climate-change deniers and those states that voted for Donald Trump

and gave him the electoral votes necessary to win our presidency, those states are actually

going to be the hardest hit both in terms of climate change itself and the financial

cost of climate change.

Most of the states that helped put Donald Trump in office are in the South.

As we know, temperatures in the South are rising same as temperatures all over the world,

but when you're considering an area that already has higher-than-usual temperatures compared

to the rest of the country, every tick up in a degree harms people.

It's going to cause more deaths from heat stroke.

It's going to cause more extreme weather events like flooding, tornadoes, storms, droughts,

things like that that could also leave people dead.

State of Florida, coast of Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, rising sea level is going

to force people from their homes, cause hundreds of billions of dollars in economic losses

from lost real estate, and those are all states that voted for Donald Trump.

In short, this new study tells us, without a doubt, the people who are going to be hit

hardest by climate change are those that put a climate-change denier in office.

Now that's not to say they're the only ones hit.

Trust me, that's not what they're saying at all, but what they are saying is that people

need to wake up and understand that climate change is not a talking point.

It is not a far-off threat.

We're talking about things that are going to be happening, that will be happening regardless

of what we do at this point now in five to 10 years.

We are already seeing massive coastal erosion along the Gulf of Mexico and along the east

coast of Florida.

It's happening today.

Again, those are red states.

Those are states that sent people like Marco Rubio to Congress, a guy who likes to say,

"I'm not a scientist, man.

I don't understand it."

Well, you sure as hell don't seem to be listening to the scientists at all.

Climate change is something we have to take seriously.

It's something that these red state voters have to realize is happening.

Those of us who actually live along the coast see it.

We see each year that our beaches are losing about a foot to two feet of total space.

Some of those people still look at that, understand that things are smaller than they were, and

still vote for climate-change deniers or they outright deny climate changes exist themselves.

I don't know if there is any way to reach these people.

We've tried being soft, we've tried being hard.

We have tried confronting them with facts, and they just call it fake news, but what's

going to happen, according to this study, is that these people will eventually have

to start paying for this.

Some of them, unfortunately, are going to pay for it with their lives, getting swept

away in a flood or heat stroke or things like that.

That's not what should happen to anybody in this country.

Nobody should wish that upon anybody either, but it's going to hit most of us in our wallets,

our bank accounts.

We're going to lose money.

We could lose our homes with nowhere else to go, with no insurance company covering

us because we live in a flood plain or we live in an area that's going to be swallowed

by climate change.

Those are costs that we can't get back, and that's what these Trump voters, these red-staters

need to start understanding.

It's not just about some far-off threat.

It's about what's going to happen to you and your family and your neighbors and your friends

and your buddies five to 10 years from now.

We are out of time.

It's time to act now so that we don't end up in an even worse situation in

a decade.

Lately, a fresh information regarding James Comey and his relations with Crooked Hillary

Nevertheless, as the sources reveal, Peter Comey, James' brother, played a role at

the Washington law firm DLA Piper, the place he works at as "Senior Director of Real

Estate Operations for the Americans".

DLA Piper is known to be among the ten highest all-time career Hillary Clinton's campaign

donors, at the same time, appears to do the Clinton Foundation's taxes.

Maybe this is the reason of James Comey not suggesting incrimination for Hillary Clinton

at the time of the email investigation which has pulled on throughout the presidential

campaign and the first months of Donald Trump's administration.

A lot of people believe Comey was preserving Clinton from the espionage and corruption

accusations which would apparently stand on her way, and maybe even put her behind the

bars.

The Gateway Pundit reveals that Comey worked as general counsel at Lockheed Martin until

the age of 2010 after which he decided to withdraw from that position, earning over

$6 million.

Coincidentally, 2010 was the year Lockheed Martin joined the Clinton Global Initiative

and "won 17 contracts from the U.S. Department, which was led by then-Secretary of State Hillary

Clinton."

Furthermore, Comey became a member of British bank HSBC Holdings' board back in 2013,

a company which once again partners with Clinton Foundation.
