Unable to back up videos/photos can sometimes be upsetting. I'd recommend trying the below steps to check if they resolve the issue:

Open the Google Photos app on your mobile device .
At the bottom, tap Assistant .
Read the first card. If it says:

"Back up & sync is off": Tap "TURN ON" on the card to back up your device's photos and videos, including ones you capture in the future.
"A photo or video was skipped": A photo or video on your mobile device doesn't meet our uploadrequirements:

Photos can't exceed 75MB or 100 megapixels.
Videos can't exceed 10GB.

It does take approximately 24-48 hours for the photos and videos to sync across all devices. Please ensure to have 'Backup & sync' enabled on the Google Photos settings while you're backing up your photos and videos. It's possible that Google Photos is merely scanning your library again, the scan will take some time, but it shouldn't re-upload the photos entirely as duplicates. The app may look like it's doing this but it's actually doing a re-scan of the photos.

If the issue still persist after 24-48 hours, then give the below steps a try in a sequence to help resolve the issue:

Close the Google Photos app and re-launch it.
Sign out and sign back in to Google Photos with the same Google Account.
Clear App data:

Open your device's Settings app (not the Google Settings app).
Touch Apps.
Select Google Photos in the list.
Touch Clear data.

Update the Google Photos app on your Android phone:

Visit the Google Play Store.
Open Google Photos.
Touch on Update.

thank you for your help. Reason why I asked originally is because I was running IOS 12 on my iPad Pro originally and at that time Google Photos was showing me all the photos which were not in my camera roll.

I guess that since that time either Apple have added some restriction so that Google Photos can no longer see non-camera roll photos, or Google have added that restriction for some reason.

Either way its a pain as I would prefer to use Google Photos as that is what I use on my Windows PC and my Android phone

In the photos team I have only seen one example. Sorry to say, but an empty album indicates that you have removed the original pictures in the mainstream on Google Photos and because nothing is in trash anymore, you must have done that more then 60 days ago (or you did have emptied the trash also). And then they can't be recovered anymore.

But for a lawsuit you should have prints, because paper is the only thing these oldmodish lawyers trust.

Thanks for posting in the Google Photos Support Community.

The assistant and the fun photos it creates are dynamically done. If a bunch of photos are uploaded or shared, it probably triggered the Assistant activity which is why you see creations. If no, they you wouldn't find much of it.

You could simply try going to the Photos > Settings > Assistant Cards, and toggling the options off and back on to see if it helps. But moving forward, I suggest simply take more images of your own, and soon you'll see the Assistant working just as hard for your images, too.

Thanks for posting in the Google Photos Support Community.

In regards to your photos and videos with your device gallery that's occupying space, you can also do a 'Free up space' via Google Photos.

Google Photos backs up everything that's there in your device (Device/SD card storage). If all your photos are backed up from your Android device to Google Photos and you're trying to make some device space by deleting photos. 'Free up space' option in Google Photos is the best way out.

The 'Free up space' feature doesn't detect content on your external SD card. You may have to move them from the external SD card to your device and then perform the 'Free up space' action for everything to be cleared. Do this only if you're sure all the content in the SD card are backed up to Google Photos.

For other apps on your phone that also occupies space, I'd recommend contacting your device manufacturer for better assistance.

The icon rotates in Google Photos but the motion doesn't start most of the time. The only way to solve the issue is to force close the app and/or restart the phone.

Hi, I have also tried to do this. I lost my Google Pixel 3a (which naturally had the google photos app). When I logged into my google photos account on my new phone they were not there, nor in the drive or on the google.photos section. They have not been deleted, etc.

Once you delete photos from your Google Photos account, they're moved to Trash for the next 60 days. If you have more than one Google account, check the trash for all of them.

If you accessed the Trash and manually sent the photos for permanent deletion, or if the 60 days expired, there is no way to recover them from Google Photos.

Don't use the Garbage Can to remove images from your phone (unless you want to permanently delete them everywhere) - Use "Free up space" to remove the local copy on uploaded images.

My family all have an album each that we shared with each other. Mine and my brothers are fine however my father's shared albums keep disappearing for no reason and at random times. He is adamant that he doesn't delete them and we've checked his settings. Doesn't seem to be any settings for shared albums to delete or archive after a certain time. The shared albums that disappear are not in his trash or archive folders. He is pulling photos from my brothers and my shared folders, creating an album, and resharing that album with us.

Thanks for posting on the Google Photos Help Forum.

Just wanted to check, the photos that are missing, are they available on Photos Library as photos might get deleted from the album but not from the Photos Library. Incase, if you don't find them on Photos Library, they should be in trash.

Also, check if you're able to see the photos on web (photos.google.com)?

Question: I accidentally deleted my photos from my SD card from a DCMI file and I did not back them up to my google photos app

I want to find out if I really backed them up if yes then why are they not appearing?

Welcome to the Google Photos Help Forum.

You can check for photos that are backed up to Google Photos by logging into photos.google.com on a web browser. If they don't appear in the web version of Google Photos which means they aren't backed up to Google Photos at all.
