So my phone uploads photos i take to Google Photos.
What are the default permissions on those photos? is it possible for anyone else to see them unless i choose to share them?
Am I missing some permissions page or am i just used to flickr where you're asked to define the permissions when you upload a photo.

Hi Jeff,
thanks for posting to the Photos Forum.
As I understand it, you put images into an album on Google Photos, and you don't want to see them from your camera roll - which would be your local on-phone storage?
If so, you need to make sure you have backup and sync turned on so that your images are backed up to Google Photos. Then use the left menu option in Google Photos to "Free up Space
So
1. Open Google Photos
2. Go to Left menu, Settings > Backup & sync > toggle the dot so that it is blue (on)
3. Make sure you have a good Wifi connection, or sufficient data, to back up images.
4. Go back to the main photos stream on Google Photos. You should see a status indicator near the upper right with a cloud and check mark "Backup Complete

I am creating an album and selected images in the order I want them to display in the album. Using 'Recently added' as a sort option the images are in the order I selected which is fine - 'first selected -> 'last selected'. Now I add further images and these again appear in the order I selected them - 'first selected -> 'last selected' BUT this block of images now appear ABOVE the first block of images. Hence the overall order is now no longer 'first selected -> 'last selected'. There is a basic design inconsistency here - additional images SHOULD be added BELOW to original set of images to maintain the 'first selected -> 'last selected' order.
5. Go to the left menu > Free up space > Read the alert message and decide to select Cancel or Free up space.
Once the space is freed, Google will delete locally stored images from your camera roll that it considers to be backed up to Google Photos.
Enjoy!

Worse than that if I want to add further images to an album I would EXPECT them to be added to the bottom of the album (unless I wanted to use the date as a sort parameter) - this is what would happen in a physical album.

I uploaded images via Browser or Backup and Sync app on my Mac but I didn't put them in an album.
Now I try to view these images in the iOS app and can't find them.
In the app I can see only images that are on my phone. I don't have auto-upload of my phones images enabled, because the crappy stuff on my phone (receipts, screenshots, etc.) should not pollute the nice vacation pictures in Google Photos.
If I search for the images in the app for example by place, Google Photos finds them.

I am trying to determine when Google Album was last modified using what used to be Picasa API 'album.updated.text'. I cannot find documentation that shows how to get this date/time value as last modified date for an Album. Is this something else that has been defeaturized with the new API?
Answer:
Additional note to the above
I was in error in saying that the original set of images were correctly put in the 'first selected -> last selected' order as further testing shows that setting the sort order to 'Recently added' sets them to 'last selected' -> 'first selected". So 'Recently added' means 'Recently added first'. This is OK but not what I want as I would expect to select them in the order in what I want them to appear not in reverse order or appearance! Having the option of "Recently added last' would work.
For further blocks of images it puts them into 'first selected -> last selected' order within their block of added images as given in my original comment above. All in all highly inconsistent and impractical.
I will now try adding my images in the reverse order to what I want to display them in one go to avoid these issues.
Answer:
Hi David,
in order to retain your sanity as I don't think there is much hope of getting Google to redesign the Recently added section, is to use something like Irfanview to batch change the dates to present the photos in the order you want.
Rinus or Jan might chime in as they have more experience using Irfanview than I,

Answer:
David,
I always thought that "Recently added" referred to when the photos were added to Google Photos, not to the album, but a short test made clear that I was wrong: it behaves exactly like you describe: the "blocks" do appear in reverse order, not the order you added them. Thanks for learning me something I did not know.
But you are probably more interested in a solution to your problem, and that is less obvious. I described several methods to get photos in the order you want in this article. The "Irfanview" trick Peter refers to is also in the article. You will have to do that on a Windows computer before you upload, thus first download the photos if needed. There is no Irfanview for Mac but maybe other alternatives.

Answer:
Hello Florian,
Thanks for reaching out to the Google Photos Help Community.
Looks like your photos and videos might still be uploading to your Google Account. I'd recommend you to check for the following things:
- Have you checked if Backup and Sync is enabled on your Google Photos app settings?
- Have you checked if you have internet connection on your iOS device?
If the issue still persists, try disconnecting and reconnecting the Google account from the Google Photos app on your iOS device. If the issue still persists, try uninstalling and reinstalling the app.
Just a heads up: Your photos and videos might still be uploading to your Google Account. Make sure "backup & sync" is turned on and then check again in 3-5 days and If you see "Getting your library" when you look in Google Photos, your photos and videos might still be loading. We recommend checking again in 1-2 days.
Check out this handy help center article for more information on "My photos aren't being backed up".
Keep me posted.

Answer:
Hello Sonya,
thank you for your quick reply.
My images are already uploaded because I can see them on photos.google.com for some time now.
But I have a hard time viewing them in the iPhone app because they are buried in plenty of mediocre pictures on my smartphone that are shown in the app.
I disabled "Backup and Sync" in the app because I don't want to upload all this to Google Photos. I would like to keep only the pretty stuff there. But the images on my iPhone are shown anyway in the app (with a unhappy crossed out cloud icon on them) and there is no way to hide these or simply to open a view of only the images that have been uploaded in Google Photos.
I tried to remove the access of Google Photos to my camera roll (the permissions in the settings app) but then the whole app lock me out.

Restore iPhone but lost pictures
Hi LaToya,
Thanks for reaching out to the Google Photos Help Community.
Just to confirm, are you referring to restore photos after you wipe your device? If so, please know that, you will be able to restore photos if they've been successfully backed up to Google Photos. To check your backup status follow these steps:
- On your iPhone or iPad, open the Google Photos app
.
- At the top:
- If you see a number: It means there's still that many photos that haven't been backed up.
- Back up is complete: If you see Upload complete
.
- "Waiting for Wi-Fi": Change your settings or connect to a Wi-Fi or mobile network. Tap the card to change your settings.
- Back up is off: If you see Back up off
. Tap to turn on back up.
- "A photo or video was skipped": A photo or video is not uploading because it doesn't meet our requirements:
- Photos can't exceed 75MB or 100 megapixels
- Videos can't exceed 10GB
You may also refer this help center article to See if you can restore deleted photos & videos.
If that's not the case, please elaborate your query in detail for me to assist you better.

Hi Vivi,
Thanks for reaching out to the Google Photos Help Community.
I certainly understand the importance of being able to backup photos and videos. Please know that, if a photo or video didn't back up, it might be because:
- Item size: Photos larger than 75MB or 100MP, videos larger than 2GB, and items smaller than 256 x 256 can't be backed up.
- Slow network connection: Your device might have a slow or no network connection.
- Unsupported file type: See which file types can be backed up.
You may also check your back up status:
- On your iPhone or iPad, open the Google Photos app
.
- At the top:
- If you see a number: It means there's still that many photos that haven't been backed up.
- Back up is complete: If you see Upload complete

After I accidentally hit "free up space" on my Google Photos app, I decided to put my photos in Drive so I could download them back onto my device. However, when I tried to follow Google's directions for this (https://support.google.com/photos/answer/7652919?co=GENIE.Platform%3DAndroid&hl=en&oco=1), I was unable to complete the last step, as I could not locate the download button. Where is it?
Answer:
Hi there,
Welcome to the Google Photos Help Community.
As you're trying to download all of your photos from the Google Photos on to your device to save it back to your drive, you will have to download each photo individually in order to save it to your phone, as there's no way to do a bulk download using the Google Photos app:
- Sign in to the Google Photos app.
- Select the photo you want to download.
- Once the photo is open, click on the three dots icon.
- Select Download.
Just a heads up: If the photo is already available in the phone, you won't see the download option.
For bulk download, you can download the photos from web (photos.google.com) by clicking on the "Download All" option. If you don't see the "Download All" option, please follow the below steps:
- Log on to photos.google.com on your computer.
- Sign in to it.
- click on the Photos option on the left.
- Select the photos you want to download. (Click the first photo in its upper left corner. The photo will now be selected. Now scroll down to the last photo, hold shift, and click the last photo. This will select all photos in your library).
- On the top right corner, click on the three dots icon.
- Click on Download. This will download all the photos that you've selected in zip format. You can then unzip them using any archive utility.
If the photos are in large numbers, could you please try downloading the photos through Google Takeout, be sure to unselect all products except Google Photos.
If that's not the case, could you please elaborate your post with more details so that I'll be able to address your issue with the best possible solution?
Keep me posted.
Best,
Sonya

The webpage that I linked to in my original question seemed to say that it's possible to download a full folder from Google Drive in one go. Is that not the case?
Thank you
Answer:
Hey,
Thanks for writing back.
Since you've mentioned that you're trying to download a full folder from the Google Drive in one go and you're unable to find the download option. Unfortunately, we might be of a little help as this forum focuses on Google Photos and its related issues. However, please find the screenshot below where you can see the download option (Down Arrow Mark) after you click on the select all.

If the issue still persists, I'd suggest posting your issue to Google Drive Help Forum for further assistance.
Let me know if this helps.
Best,
Sonya

I'm amazed at how I can't use my own photos on my own camera. I understand the logic behind it (flow control) but result is I can't send a simple pic to a friend. I'm forced to do a snapshot of the screen. Is it not amazing?
Answer:
Trying to download 3500 photos for offline organizing because online is a chore from video-downloads.googleusercontent.com Error code 500. If the software continues to remains difficult to use and feels butchered to trap users from leaving I will move to a self-hosted NextCloud which literally does everything Google Apps do for me.
(Also, a 500 photo limit when adding large amounts of photos to a new album, my albums are easily 4,500 -- if Google Photos is meant to be a "play thing" I will gladly switch to offline DigiKam or Shotwell where 500 photos is nothing.)
Answer:
I have the same problem here. There is no download button on Google Photos. The only way I've found to "download" photos is to open each photo individually, and click the "share" button. How useless!
Does anyone have a suggestion?

I would like to give another person permission to manage a shared album.
Some time ago I started a shared album at work which has steadily grown in size since I started it. However I'd like to give another person in the company access to edit/moderate the album as I have no interest in doing so.
I can't seem to find a way to give this permission. Is this a planned feature?
Another option would be the ability to transfer ownership of the shared album to my colleague.
Answer:
Yes, Please! We are making a photo collage/slideshow for my uncle who passed away, and I have multiple family members who need owner access. Please do this soon google!
Answer:
There is no reason this shouldn't already be a feature. We also need it done for a family album so others can go back and change dates on the older photos that were added using Google's Photo Scan app. Come on Google.
Answer:
A perfect typical case: 2 parents are owners of the album of their baby and the other accounts are just viewers, commenters. A bit the same that what exist with Google Docs really.
Come on Mr Product Manager: make it happen :)
Answer:
I am literally the use case that the above commenter points out. I set up our second child's album, but my wife would like owner access to manage the album with me. This should be a feature surely!

Hi
I use google photos mostly to be able to see my photos on devices -dont care about editing them. I have a mac and was using the google photo uploader with no issues. Based on a prompt that the google photo uploader is "going away " I selected to use the Backup and Sync but I find it very confusing.
1. Now on my Google Drive on the Web there is a my computer tab with a my iPhoto folder. I dont really need or want this. But can I delete this without deleting the photos in Google Photo?
2. The only functionality I want is to be able to upload any new photos on my computer automatically to Google Photos but I dont want to see my computer drive folder /drive.google.com/drive/computers
3. Also it seems RAW photos are getting uploaded to my Drive and using space on my drive even though I am using High Quality setting which is not supposed to use space
Help - I find this Backup and Sync way more confusing than the Google Photo uploader I used on my mac before

Recently i found all my video recording (taken vertically) turned horizontal after using Google Photos to trim shorter. even when I tried to rotate it back to vertical, upon saving all my video recording rotate itself side way yet again. this is MOST annoying, and I don't know how to fix it back. does anyone know if there is a setting in Google Photos that i accidental ticked off that make all my video recording horizontal??! thank you in advance.
Answer:
Answer:
Hi Nadia. thank you for your suggestion. I tried all the steps. and it didn't help. my video recording still rotate by itself horizontally. i spoke to a friend of mine about the problem. He didn't have such issue with Google Photos, but then he did an update of Google Photos, he is now experiencing the same issue, his video recordings rotate horizontally after trimming. he also has the HTC phone, which led me to suspect the latest Google Photos App update is what causing me this issue to start with. is there anyway that I could reverse back to the older version?? i am using the latest Google Photos, and it isn't working!
Answer:
Hi Adelaide,
Answer:
I am having the same issue on my HTC 10. I went to try Nadia's suggested steps. However, I get a warning That it would go back to factory settings and that I would lose data. I do not want to lose the photos or videos on my phone.
Answer:
Hi Stresscookie,
if you refer to Nadia's initial suggestion of clear app data/cache. don't bother. it didn't fix the video rotation issue. however, Nadia's second suggestion of "Uninstall Updates" actual work for both of me and my friend. We suspect the latest Google Photo update may contain some funny codes that unintentionally rotate the video recording after trimming. but as soon as you reverse back to the older version of app (aka uninstall update) the issue disappears. So good luck. Hopefully Nadia and Google team are able to sort out the issue. meanwhile, don't update your Google Photo App to the latest version. hope this helps.

Hi Jennifer,
Welcome to the Google Photos Help Community.
As you're facing issues while purchasing a photo book at the time of making the payment, I'd suggest you try some of these basic troubleshooting steps on your phone:
1. Sign out from your Google account and sign in back.
2. Uninstall and reinstall the Google Photos updates. (Go to Settings > Apps or Application Manager > Google Photos app > Uninstall Updates > OK). As long as you have a strong Internet connection (Wi-Fi or mobile data), your Play Store app will update to the latest version within a few minutes.
3. Try clearing your app data which is the same as uninstalling and reinstalling the app. After you clear your data, sign in and turn "back up & sync" on again.Open your device's Settings app (not the Google Settings app).
After you clear your data, sign in and turn "back up & sync" on again.Open your device's Settings app (not the Google Settings app).
a. Tap Apps.b. SelectPhotos in the list.
c. Tap Clear data.
4. Restart your device.
Keep me posted.

Hi Ayomikun,
Any photos or videos uploaded/backed up to Google Photos are private by default. The only way for anyone else to get access is if you manually share a photo or album with them.
You can find information about sharing your photos on the Help Centre.
If you have shared your photos and you want to remove access for those people, you can view the instructions on the Help Centre.

Hi, I will start by highlighting the following fact: I love Google Photos, since I've started using it my photo memories are brought back to life. I do however struggle with one particular scenario:
- I'm creating a new album and while doing that I'm selecting a number of faces to be automatically recognized in creating the album images; everything perfect up to this point, all the past images containing those faces are being associated with this new album. Sharing the album with friends (the faces mentioned before) works perfect still. Now, the challenge I'm facing:
- deciding to associate a new face with the album does not automatically bring all the past pictures associated with that particular face within the album, although this shall be the natural expected behavior. Adding photos manually would be something i would desire to avoid. Is there any way to "force" old pictures containing the new added face into the album?

Hi Tekalign,
Please review the following information in case there are any options you haven't yet tried.
1. Check your online account - photos.google.com
If your photos were successfully uploaded to your online Google Photos account they may be available there. Try visiting photos.google.com and searching for them. If you have more than one Google account, check all of them.
2. Check the trash - photos.google.com/trash
Once you delete photos from your Google Photos account, they're moved to Trash for the next 60 days. If you deleted them by mistake you can always restore them from the Trash folder within those 60 days. Here's the link explaining how to recover them from Trash. If you have more than one Google account, check the trash for all of them.
If you accessed the Trash and manually sent the photos for permanent deletion, or if the 60 days expired, there is no way to recover them from Google Photos.
3. Review other options
- if you previously used Picasa, visit picasaweb.google.com and search for your photos.
- have you made any backups of the photos on your phone, camera, computer, or elsewhere?
- there is a small chance that you can restore the photos using a recover deleted photos app (Android). I haven't used them myself so have no specific recommendations. There may well be more app options if you visit the appropriate app store and try other search terms. I don't see any similar apps on the iOS store, but you could check yourself.
- you can contact the Google Drive support team to see if any deleted files may be recovered. Use the Google Drive contact form, click Missing or deleted files, select a contact option, and be sure to tell them you permanently deleted files in Google Drive.
- If you ever shared the photos with anyone else, it's possible they may have a copy they could share back or send to you.
Good luck, and do post again if you need more detail on any of the above points.

You can't make photos private on Google Photos, because it is private already.
But you can hide "sensitive" pictures from direct viewing by archiving them and maybe you have done that.
The you can find that archive via the 3 small lines left -up in the Photos app.

Answer:
Hi Supercar,
Unless you have access to the phone, there's no way you can get the photos. For security reasons, if you could do such a thing, it means that anyone could access them, and we wouldn't want that!
So unless you have access to the original phone that the photos are on, OR if you had backed them up using Google Photos (or another app), then I'm afraid the photos are lost.
Answer:
Hi Michael,
When you say you have the phone number, are you saying you just know what the number is?
Unless you have access to the physical phone that the photos were stored on (if you did not back them up) then I'm afraid it won't do any good.

- Clear App data/cache:
- Open your device's Settings app (not the Google Settings app).
- Touch Apps.
- Select Google Photos in the list.
- Touch Clear data/cache
- Update the Google Photos app on your Android phone:
- Visit the Google Play Store.
- Open Google Photos.
- Touch on Update.
- Restart your device.
Keep me posted.
Best,
Nadia

Hi Nadia. thank you for your suggestion.

Hi Katie,
Welcome to the Google Photos Help Forum.
Double check and change your Google account in two places in the Google Photos App:
1. The top of the 3 line menu
2. 3 line menu > Settings > Back up & sync
Make sure the account makes sense in both places.

I seem to be having a problem with my Google Photos account. It is a legacy G Suite account.
As of this morning, I am no longer able to share albums. Whenever I try to share an album, I receive the message:
Trouble sending photos. Try again later.
Following the advice posted in responses to other users with similar issues, I have tried logging out and back in, clearing my browser cache and all cookies, using a different browser, and trying to share via the Android app. None of these solutions have fixed the problem.
In addition, it appears that the back end processing for the account may have stopped. New faces are not being added to the People section, new Places are not being added, and all of the Things that were previously listed have now disappeared.
I would appreciate any advice on how to get the account working correctly again.

Thanks for the reply. However, I'm able to share albums just fine to my family and have been doing so without issue even after July 2019. More so, I was able to share 2 albums from my archive (separate account) just fine.

how can I separate pictures and videos into different folders automatically when being uploaded from…
The short answer is: you cannot. Google creates some albums for people, things, places etc but does not take into account any folder structure on your device. You will have to do that manually.

While the back end processing finally resumed on this account, I continue to have daily problems with sharing photo albums.
I have developed a theory that Google has implemented some sort of daily limit on how many albums you can share from Google Photos as a spam prevention measure. Each morning, I am able to share a couple of the albums that I created - typically between 3-5 albums - and then I receive the "Trouble sending photos" error message for the rest of the day. I have experienced this result every day this week.
Can anyone confirm whether there is a daily limit to how many albums Google Photos will allow you to share on a daily basis?
I can understand why such a limit would exist. I could envision a scenario where a sleazy company would create a Google Photos account, post various pictures of advertisements to it, and then use a purchased email list to use the system to send their spam by sharing the "photos" to that list.
If this is the case, it would be helpful if Google were upfront about this limit. Instead of throwing a generic error message that leaves the end user wondering if their account is corrupted or if there is some other problem, the system should inform you that there is some sort of daily limit on how much sharing you can do.
As a side note, this issue is making me consider using a different photo service (like SmugMug) for my photo sharing project. I am in the process of scanning all of my family photos and sharing them with family members. I will be working through approximately 80 years worth of pictures during this project, and being limited to sharing a handful of the albums that I create on any given day complicates the process. I have been forced to create a list of albums to share when the system "unfreezes" my account, and that list has been growing longer each day.

This is an old thread, and Google changed (July 2019) the way photos and albums can be shared when you use "Send in Google Photos". You can no longer share photos or albums by using "Send in Google Photos" with accounts that are not linked to a Google account. The reason seems that sharing selected photos now results in a kind of chat session. Why they also limited the sharing of albums is not clear to me.
The solution for you and Tuccy Photos is to use the older but more reliable method:
- Click "Share" > Create link
- Send that link by normal mail to who you want ...

Regarding linked Google accounts, I even tried to test share it with just my personal email (Gmail) and no luck either.

"I tried to share with my personal email (Gmail) and no luck either."
They seem to exclude the account you are actually signed in to. Some used it to get a nice presentation and share the mail further. That seems no longer possible but you can share with a second account if you have one.
