Yes, the Google Drive support team redirects users here where there's unfortunately nothing we can do. But we've seen several cases of the Google Drive recovery process bringing back some photos deleted in Google Photos, that's why we advise not to mention Google Photos (otherwise Google Drive support agents don't even try the recovery process).

Answer:
The first thing to do in such a case is to look for the missing photos here, signing in with all your Google accounts if you have more than one:
- photos.google.com (be sure to scroll all the way down to the end)
- photos.google.com/archive
- photos.google.com/trash
- get.google.com/albumarchive
- drive.google.com
- other online photo or file storage services you use (e.g. Dropbox, OneDrive, Amazon)

If the photos got deleted for some reason there's something you can try. I recommend that you contact the Google Drive support team to see if any deleted files may be recovered. Just open the Google Drive https://support.google.com/drive/?hl=en&authuser=0#topic=14940&contact=1 contact form, click Missing or deleted files, select a contact option, and be sure to tell them you permanently deleted files in Google Drive, not Google Photos.

Hello ThomasV,
Thanks for posting in the Google Photos Support Community.
I understand that you're unable to backup your photos and I'll be happy to help you. Maybe the photos weren't uploaded successfully at the first place to Google Photos (cloud) and also make sure you're logged in to Google Photos with the same Google Account that you used during the backup. Photos/videos that are not synced or backed up, will still appear in Google Photos and will have this icon
(which means not synced/backed up) or some photos/videos will also show up with the two arrows in a circle mean backup is in progress.
Once the upload is complete there will be no icon on any photos/videos. Often, many of us misinterpret that they are all backed up because the photos/videos show up in Google Photos and we over see the icons on each photo/video. If the photos/videos weren't backed up they cannot be deleted from the Google Photos library nor Trash.
In case, you are uploading a large amount of data (photos/videos), please know that it might take 24-48 hours for the photos and videos to sync across all devices. Please ensure to have 'Backup & sync' enabled on the Google Photos settings while you're backing up your photos and videos. To check is the content is backed up, login in to photos.google.com to checked for your backed up photos and videos.
Meanwhile, also try giving the below steps a try once again in a sequence to help resolve the issue:
- Close the Google Photos app and re-launch it.
- Sign out and sign back in to Google Photos with the same Google Account.
- Clear App data:
- Open your device's Settings app (not the Google Settings app).
- Touch Apps.
- Select Google Photos in the list.
- Touch Clear data.
- Update the Google Photos app on your Android phone:
- Visit the Google Play Store.
- Open Google Photos.
- Touch on Update.
Let me know how it goes.
Best,
Amanda

Answer:
@Christian,
Unfortunately we have run out of ideas about what might cause this. Google Photos do not provide 1:1 user support, the Community is made up of volunteers who try to help using our experience.
If you have the confirmation in Backup & sync settings that you have unlimited storage it sounds like an account issue. Storage is based on Drive quota which is common to Gmail, Google Drive and Google Photos. The common agency is Google Drive Support
If they refer you back to Google Photos we don't have access to support, perhaps they should be able to escalate to Google Photos internally on your behalf as they work for the same company.
There is also Pixel Support or the Pixel User Community and If you do get an answer we would be very grateful if you shared it so we can help other Pixel users.
Good luck,
Peter

I first noticed on freeprints. But it also won't work with Snapfish and lalalab.
Basically I cannot connect the 3rd party app to my Gmail account. It asks permission brings up my accounts. Once selected I just get a spinning circle.
I have tried clearing cache, data removing permission for the app in account settings (hoping it would re-find permission).
I've tried an alternate Gmail account on the same device (which works but there not my photos). I've tried an alternate device (didn't work). Allowed less secure apps access to my account.
Finally I tried apps other than freeprints. The problem seems to be with my photo account rather than the 3rd party apps.
One of the apps did say API Resource limit exceeded for photo library... But the other apps say nothing and give me a spinning Circe.
I can only think of one around for this which is to backup and move to a new Gmail account. Photos, Gmail, drive, contacts... That will be a pain.
Does anybody have an alternative suggestion?

It appears that photos.google.com is just one big flat file structure and that all photos from all devices, computers, phone, tablet all get mashed into one big bag of photos. Is there a way to determine which photos came from where? Also If a photo on my computer and one on my phone have the same filename does backup and sync save both or overwrite one? All this is because I had a bunch of photos that I had downloaded from photos.google.com that originally came from my phone and put then in a folder that was also being backed up by backup and sync on my win10 computer. If I remove the photos from my computer, it is supposed to remove them from google photos. But will it remove a copy or the original photo from my phone leaving me with no copy of the photos I downloaded to my computer?
Answer:
"Is there a way to determine which photos came from where?"
Answer:
Like everyone having used Picasa before, you are disappointed that the Backup-app on your Windows computer does not convert your neat folders into neat albums on Photos.
Answer:
Thanks all. After I posted I discovered what Rinus mentions that the photos from windows 10 are not handled the same way as from a phone or tablet. They go into a different place as Rinus mentions. It would be nice if google would make it clear that windows 10 backup and sync is not the same as from a phone or tablet. Not sure why. I did see the camera information that took the picture as mentioned by Janvb and ScottG_TC . Janvb claimed that you could search on that, but I did not see a way. I clicked on search (accessing photos via Chrome) and did not see camera as an option. There was no "as shown" in janvb post that I could see. All the formation that janvb mentioned does answer my question. I agree with Rinus about Google apps cleverness. Why throw away the folder structure that you have on your computer. All the pictures get mashed together in one big mess and you lose all the work you did separating the photos into folders (albums).

I got a new Samsung phone and my photos were uploaded from my Pixel but they were all out of order. …
If you did nothing else then signing-in to the Google Photos app on your new Samsung, everything should be okay - at least after a few days, because it can take a lot of time before all are "transferred" correctly.
So the question is: did you do something else?

Like Scott said, you can see in the info panel which device was used to take the photo. You can search with the name of that device (as shown in the info of a photo) to find photos taken with that device.
"If a photo on my computer and one on my phone have the same filename does backup and sync save both or overwrite one?"
Photos will happily upload two different photos with the same filename, but that is not what you should have asked: you talk about two copies of the same photo, and that is less obvious.
- When the photos and their metadata are identical, Google should not upload them again.
- When there is a change to the photo (edited) or to the metadata (caption or tag added, date changed etc) the photo will be uploaded as duplicate but NOT overwrite the old one. The only way to find out for sure in your case is to try, for example by uploading a sample manually. You can check on top in "Recently added" https://photos.google.com/search/_tra_ which ones were uploaded (again).
Answer:
Like everyone having used Picasa before, you are disappointed that the Backup-app on your Windows computer does not convert your neat folders into neat albums on Photos.
But young Google is not that clever anymore although they think they are :-)
However: your real backup is not on Photos, but on Drive at https://drive.google.com/drive/computers
And if you can switch-on the Drive-option to create a Google Photos folder which automatically will get filled with all pictures uploaded over years to Photos, but not via the Backup-app on your computer. That folder will have subfolders per year and per month.
So if your computer would die at this very moment, you can download from Drive what you need on a new computer to have your recent pictures at hand.
On Photos itself, you are invited to create thematic albums like about a recent holiday trip and then you select all relevant pictures (and movies) from the library-pile and then it does not matter from which camera they come - they just need to be good enough for that album which also maybe suitable for sharing.
That does not mean that you can delete the library - you only need to delete the bad ones from your phone mainly. Because on desktop you will do that also.
Answer:

I don't want all my google accounts to be able to access Google photos
They don't have: only the account which is used for uploading to Google Photos in the settings.
But the app always shows the pictures that still are stored on your phone - that is independant of any account. Like any Gallery.

It turns out Google Photos is not covered by the G Suite agreement.
We've only just found this out, after using Google Photos for a few years.
One of our employees left in December to pastures new, and his G Suite user account is the "owner" of a lot of business photos (thousands) relating to the work we do.
We want to close down his user account, but not to lose the photos.
Others must have faced this problem - can anyone suggest a solution please?

Stumbled on a bit of a work around on this:
-Add the pictures from the shared album to your library.
-Delete the shared album from the old owner.
-You will have all the pictures form the old album and can now make a new album with you as the owner.
A fair amount of work (especially if you have 1000s of photos) but worth it.
Hope it works for you.

- On your iPhone or iPad, open the Google Drive app.
- Tap Menu
Settings
.
- Under Google Photos, turn on Auto Add.
- At the top, tap Back

- Find and open the Google Photos folder.
- Select the folder you want to download.
- Tap More
Select All

.
Here's a help article to know more about how to download photos or videos to your device from Google Photos.
If you've deleted the photos from Google Photos library, they are temporary deleted as they would be moved to the Trash?Bin, and if you want to restore them after they are deleted from the Trash/Bin they cannot be restored.
Please know that photos/videos deleted from the Google Photos library, goes to the Trash for the next 60 days. So, in case, you deleted it by mistake you can always restore it from Trash folder within those 60 days (post deletion). But, if you don't find it in Trash, probably it must have been deleted more that 60 days ago. Unfortunately, restoring your lost/deleted photos and videos from Trash is the last resort.
