Question: Recovery of photos

Recovery of photos of last 9 months

Hello, User.

The first thing is to check if the images/videos are available in the web version of Google Photos. To do this, go to https://photos.google.com.

Look under the "Photos" menu, located in the left menu. If the images / videos do not appear, proceed to look for them in the "Trash".

If the resources you are looking for are there, just select them and click the "Restore" button.

Remember that images in the "Trash" are automatically deleted after 60 days. After this date it is not possible to recover them. If you delete the trash it will not be possible to recover the information.

An important consideration is that the "Backup and sync" option has been enabled on mobile devices. If this was not the case, the images and videos that you have deleted from your phone will not be able to recover them, at least from Google Photos.

Lastly, if the deletion process is foreign to Google Photos and responds to file management on mobile or desktop, I recommend using a file recovery app. On the Internet you can find different.

A beautiful day!

I turned on backup and sync for my photos and it quickly told me I was out of space even though I was uploading "high quality". Grrr.  So, I went through my google drive and got rid of the full size photos it uploaded. I, then, went back to upload them by drag and drop and it acts like it's uploading them, but then I get a message that says 0 uploaded; add to album.

What it going on? It doesn't matter what the browser is, if the photos are completely different, if I upload 1 or a bunch. Can anyone help?

ETA: jpgs seem to work fine, but it won't take my raw files. Help? I just want them at high quality, not original.

Answer:

It does not make any sense to upload raw-files in High Quality: they take a lot of time because it are large files which then will get converted and compressed by Google into small jpg-files.
And if they are not compatible with GP at all, they will stick on Drive only and take full storage there.
Do read before trying: see this link

Answer:

Thanks for your reply. I've done this for a long time with no problem and upload the raw files merely as an extra back up for me. My files are not too large, so that's not the problem. GP usually converts them to jpgs just fine and adds them to my photos.  I don't know what would have changed in the past 48 hrs that it's not working now.

Answer:

You even did not tell that, so then we get the impression that you are doing this for the first time.
Google may have skipped your raw-type from the compatibility list for reasons unknown to us.
There were comparable problems with some Olympus cameratype.
Jan should report that to Google, so no solution yet.
Sorry

Answer:

@D Is,

Is it possible to share an example by right clicking a Drive copy and pasting the link in your reply?  I assume the raw is a direct output from your camera without any editing?

Peter

Answer:

Indeed: that is awfull and very confusing after many years.
If you put the jpg-versions in the same PC-folder as the original raws, you don't need to change the settings in Backup & Sync. Then it also is more easy to remove them if the raws start to sync again. But the uploads to Photos are not synced, so there the duplicates need to be removed manually.
Please let us know.

Answer:

Hi, Benjamin Corrente

Welcome to Google Photos Community Support Forum & thanks for your post.

Google Photos app doesn't support folders.

Nevertheless, you can create albums corresponding to each folder on your phone.

Next, what you are observing is the design feature of the Sync function.

You shouldn't delete the photos on your phone straightforwardly since backup sync is on.
Sync means that your photo library stays consistent across all devices you signed in to your account with Google Photos.
For example, deleting a photo from one device will delete it everywhere, and editing on the web will edit the picture on the original device etc.

Next, perform this critical action. Before going for "Free up space", please create a local backup by copying the content from the phone to some external HDD or USB storage device.

Now, when the quantum of photos awaiting the free up action is too large & also the phone has very little space, the "free up space" command fails to do anything.
Also, the app may crash.

To mitigate the problem, please start deleting manually.
To do so, tap to open the photo and slide up.
Below the pic, if you find the suggestion "Backup now", tap on that first.
Once complete, tap on "Delete from device". Now, the photo will get removed from the phone storage.

Once a sizable space is free, you can try using the "Free up space" option.

Question: How to merge dublicate photos

How to merge dublicate photos

Hi, HARSHDEEPSINH JADEJA

Welcome to Google Photos Community Support Forum & thanks for your post.

Google Photos never uploads the same picture multiple times.
What we see as duplicates have some differences in file format or metadata.
Additionally, if you have activated Raw + JPEG capture or bracketing in your phone app, that would create duplicates.

Regrettably, Google Photos doesn't provide any means to remove the apparent duplicates. You have to search those manually.

However, you will find some tips in the following article compiled by experts with comprehensive experience on how to avoid duplicate photos & how to remove those.

Hi, Aditi Kalia

Welcome to Google Photos Community Support Forum & thanks for your post.

I suggest you clear the cached & stored data of the Google Photos app & then reinstall the app.
You can do that through these steps.
  • On your Android phone, open the Settings.
  • Tap Apps and notifications.
  • Tap Show all apps.
  • Tap Google Photos.
  • Tap Storage and cache.
  • Tap Clear storage.
  • Next, uninstall the Google Photos app.
  • Power off the phone & then restart.
  • Install the latest version of the Google Photos app through the Play Store.
Log into your profile & see whether that helps overcome the current problem.

Hello,
I recently shared all the photos from an old account to a new account, I then clicked "download all photos" on the new account, which downloaded the photos and added them to my "gallery" together with the new accounts photos. After the download I removed sharing, and also removed the old account from that device. A new device which does not have any of the files locally
Both the new and old account are set to store "original quality".

So all the photos and videos are on both of the account separately at this moment.
However, the old account states it has used 84GB for photos and videos.
While the new account only uses 3,7GB.

I have checked many of the files, including big videos multiple Gb's in size.
Thay are the exact same size on both accounts.

Why isn't the new account showing more data usage, and can I safely delete the old account, or atleast cancel that subscription?

I did this a couple of days ago and thought it might take a while for it to update, but still no change.

Thanks

Photos do just disappear from albums.  Happens in my account repeatedly.  Has nothing to do with trash (they're not there) or links to phone/pad (the photos are upload copies from files on my computer) and they are recent photos, not prior to 1979, so it doesn't seem to be the date issue.  Since the photos are uploaded, not linked, I see no reason for them to disappear.  This doesn't seem to happen across the board, just to certain albums.  All photos involved are uploads, not links.  None show up in trash.

Answer:

I tried creating a new album with the same content but from newly uploaded photos.  Photos also started disappearing from that album and they're not the same ones disappearing from the original album.  Also, these albums are not shared with anyone and I am not editing them from my iphone or ipad or my Mac.  I do sometimes look at the album.
I've essentially lost faith in Google Photos.  I'll use it for quick shares, but am migrating albums I need to remain in tact to Flickr and Amazon Prime to determine which one I'll start using instead of unreliable Google Photos.  Too bad.  I'm generally quite pleased with Google services, but can't tolerate photos that disappear for no apparent reason!
Still dying to hear an explanation that fits my circumstances.

Answer:

@Steve,
That is weird indeed. I have 350 albums and never experienced this, but there is a recent similar complaint: https://support.google.com/photos/thread/211472

We (volunteer users) can only escalate this to Google. Subscribe to the above thread to be informed when there are updates. In any case it is wise (I would say it's a must) to have your photos also somewhere else (not synced). Only one single copy is never reliable.

Answer:

Thanks for the link. All I use Google Photos for is a convenience for sharing photos with friends and family and referencing certain groups of photos when away from home. Virtually all my photos are based on RAW files on my computer which are backed up locally and with on offsite backup service.

Answer:

@Steve,

Good to hear you have a local backup. Can you try to upload these photos again directly to the album ? I always use "Drag & drop" for that purpose, but you can also use "Add photos" > Select from computer. That should not add duplicates, and adds the photos directly to album sand library.  Let us know if that helps.

In case it does not, can you tell us whether you upload the RAW's directly to Google Photos, or first convert them to JPEG's?

Answer:

The OP (original poster) let us know that the photos disappeared from the albums because he deleted them from the computer, which was synced to Google Photos.

More in general: when photos are deleted from Google Photos, they will also disappear from the albums where they are added to.
  • Albums in Google Photos do not contain copies of the photos, but only links to the photos in https://photos.google.com or https://photos.google.com/archive. That means that, when photos are deleted, they will also disappear from the albums.  It is good to check the trash bin (https://photos.google.com/trash) where they should stay for 60 days.
    • When you delete photos in the Google Photos app on mobile devices they may also be deleted from Google Photos, thus from the albums
    • When you remove duplicates, you may remove the copy that is added to the album, and thus will also be removed from the album.

  • When photos are missing in albums, you can check whether they are still found in https://photos.google.com or https://photos.google.com/archive, where they are sorted by date. Recently added photos can be seen on top in https://photos.google.com/search/_tra_ where they are sorted by upload date.
When the photos are still found I cannot explain why they would disappear from the albums.
NO SYSTEM IS 100% SAFE. You can also loose photos by own mistakes.
Therefore it is important to have a real backup, where copies are stored which are not 2-way synced. Unfortunately Google does not offer that feature. You will have to take care. See this link.

Answer:

I've had many photos randomly disappearing from Google Photos, both random photos in albums and entire albums. This is a paid service, but I haven't found any way to get real support on the issue, other than being directed to a FAQ that tells me to look in the trash folder.
I have a real backup of some of the photos, but I have no idea on how to get them back in Google Photos.
Also I have another issue with space consumption in Google Drive in general, where it reports a higher GB usage than I can see in my Drive folders. Don't know if it is related tomthe other issue.

If I am paying the extra money for Google photos, like for a year for 1TB. I uploaded max upto 1 TB and stopping my subscription. Will the data uploaded as 1 TB also go away if I cancel the subscription or the data still will be there or not?

Answer:

Hello GIRIDHAR M.P,

If you stop the subscription and you are below the free 15GB allocation nothing will happen.

If you are above the free 15GB allocation you will be out of space and the following rules apply.

What happens if you run out of space

You can’t send or receive messages. Messages sent to you are returned to the sender.

You can’t sync or upload new files. You can’t create new files in Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, Drawings, Forms, and Jamboard. Until you reduce the amount of storage you use, neither you nor anyone else can edit or copy your affected files. Syncs stop between your computer's Google Drive folder and My Drive.

You can’t back up any photos or videos. If you want to add any more photos and videos, you can free up Google storage space or buy more Google storage.

When you have been inactive in Gmail, Google Drive (including Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, Drawings, Forms, Jamboard or Sites files) or Google Photos for 2 years, all of your content may be removed from that product. But before that happens, we will:
  • Give you notice using email and notifications within the Google products. We will contact you at least three months before content is eligible for deletion.
  • Give you the opportunity to avoid deletion (by becoming active in the product)
  • Give you the opportunity to download your content from our services. Learn more about how to download your Google data.
