I've just noticed that Google Photos is reducing the resolution of photos I edit on my iPad, without any warning. This is even though I've selected "original" instead of "high quality" in my google options. This is very disappointing! Is there a way to recover my higher resolution original? There should really be a warning that this will happen.

Answer:

They are reduced to High Quality indeed, but that is not a drama. 16 MP and a somewhat lower amount of megabytes still is very good quality.
But if you open the edited picture, you can undo the edits to get back your original.
Then I would advice to use the Google Snapseed editor which also is much more extended and then you can choose the saving quality.
You can go from a picture in Photos straight to Snapseed via Edit in.... (3 dots). And the edited picture is saved in the Snapseed folder which can be synchronised with Photos. But it is better to backup them manually if the edit is succesfull, because you may try several edits.

Answer:

Mark,

If you edit a photo it will be saved with a jpg compression at reduced size (MB) and is always in the background available for 'Undo edits' to get back to the original.

There is no warning as editing produces a new photo which is no longer the original.

For clarity, resolution is a different thing, photos <16MP (resoloution = pixel dimensions) and if this is happening you have a fault, please advise which issue you have, preferably with screenshots or photos data to illustrate what you are seeing,

Regards,
Peter

Answer:

But the reason (not explained by Google) is that your original is kept in background and the edits should not take additional storage (else you would complain about that :-)
That is not the case when you use an external editor like Snapseed, because then you will get an additional picture in your library and then you may need to decide to delete the original.
In that additional picture the resulotion also can be somewhat smaller, but that is caused by your cropping and not by Google.

Answer:

Hi, Thanks for your quick responses. I've taken a photo and loaded it into Lightroom to see the photo meta data.

Screenshot 1 shows an .HEIC file with a resolution of 3264 x 2448.

I've then edited the photo using Google Photos, all I did was increase the saturation slightly, before loading it back into Lightroom.

Screenshot 2 shows a .JPG file with a resolution of 2048 x 1536.

I find it troubling that there's no warning of the resolution drop when you save the changes in Google Photos. I've now got a lot of editing to undo and repeat in another programme. The lower resolution might suffice for a lot uses, but I don't want to lose the full resolution, edited photos in case I want to print them.

Thanks

Answer:

We have seen issues like this when the photo hasn’t been fully backed up before being shared, when the lower resolution can be seen in the shared album.  Did you see the photo at 2048 at photos.google.com before downloading. How do you transfer to lightroom?  Also the edit produces a jpg which may take longer.  Any optimised iCloud involved?

Answer:

It would have been more much better to tell these numbers immediately, because then we can check and don't need to guess.
You must have done something abnormal like Peter already does suggest.

I uploaded a 12 MP Heic-file of 2 MB into Google Photos set for High Quality (free storage).
Downloaded this is still the same Heic-file.
Slight editing with Palma-filter in the Photos-editor - no cropping.
Downloaded: still the same 12 MP resolution, but filetype changed into Jpg and filesize into 4 MB.
So nothing wrong.

PS: Windows-10 already can show Heic files since its last 2018-update.

Answer:

Addition:
Simple editing the same heic-file in the Snapseed-app results in Jpeg-file of same 12 MP resolution, but a filesize of 6,3 MB
Uploaded at High Quality back into Google Photos reduces the jpeg-file to 3,2 MB, but the resolution still stays 12 MP (heic-original from iPad Pro).
Again: nothing abnormal.

Answer:

Ok I've done some more digging into this…

Test 1
I took another test photo on my iPhone and comparedthe photos transferred to a Windows laptop using 3 methods: iCloud, Google Photos andDropbox.

iCloud and Google both upload the unedited photo in HEICformat using the as-shot resolution (4032 x 3024). Dropbox converts the phototo JPG and uploads at the same resolution. No issue so far.

Then I edited the saturation of the photo using Google Photoson my iPhone.

Back on the laptop, Google shows the editedphoto and allows me to download both the original HEIC file and the edited JPG.The resolution of both versions is as-shot. Perfect.
Dropbox only shows the original unedited photo.
iCloud shows the edited photo and allows me to downloadboth the original HEIC file and the edited JPG. The HEIC file is at theas-shot resolution, but the JPG has been reduced to 1792 x 1344. See list of files below:

This resolution is confirmed when looking at the edited photo usingLightroom on my iPhone.

Test 2
I then repeated the steps, this timemaking the saturation edit in the default iPhone photo app rather than GooglePhotos. This time there is no reduction to the resolution of the iClouduploaded photo.

So when a photo is edited by Google Photos, the resolution seemsto be dropping when the JPG is 'passed back' to the Apple architecture. So if Iedit a photo with Google Photos and then publish with another app, it will sufferthe resolution drop. Any thoughts on a way around this?

Thanks again,

Mark

Answer:

The only thing I can suggest is don't use iCloud.  I tried uploading some HEIC to iPhotos from Windows and nothing happened. I tried uploading from iPhotos cloud and it said it only uploads jpg

Who whole i*** appears to be flawed, just stick to Google Photos with Dropbox running in Parallel for security.

Answer:

My impression is that you still use the word "resolution" wrongly.

Resolution is pixels per inch, so 4000 on 10 inch paper is a printresolution of 400 dots per inch (dpi) and you get good print quality when the dpi is over 200 (the golden standard is 300).
And on Google Photos that resolution stays the same (unless cropped) - also when downloaded and used in other software. If not, that software is doing something abnormal.

But picturequality is expressed in MP's versus MB's and for a 12 MP picture with 4000x3000 pixels the uncompressed filesize is a 3x12 = 36 MB bitmap-file (BMP - I don't know the equivalent on Apple).

JPG  is a classic compressed format to get acceptable picture quality at a much lower filesize - generally about a factor 10 - so 3,6 MB on average (with large variations between pictures due to content).

But Google uses a modern compression comparable with the HEIC-algorithm - generally about a factor 30 - so 1,2 MB  (=1200 KB) on average - so MP / 10 = MB as a guidance.

Apparently Google accepts HEIC for free storage without immediate conversion to their own JPG- format after uploading. That only happens after editing in Google Photos because a new file must be created while the original stays available in background in case the edits should be undone.

JPG and JPEG are equivalent.

Best and thanks for testing / Rinus

How can I stop Google from analyzing every single picture I upload. I never include any GPS data. I have all my location history turned off, but whenever I add images to my photos (which I'm paying for), Google decides it's OK for them to analyze EVERY SINGLE GD IMAGE I UPLOAD. Then they create albums based on locations or image content. THIS IS NOT OK. I DO NOT WANT YOU ANALYZING MY IMAGES. I'm paying for storage. That's it. This is incredibly invasive and needs to stop.

Answer:

You don't need to view these automatic albums on top and they can't be shared or used for creating Photobooks either.
I do think that they only are there for presenting fast results when you type some word in the searchbox.
This is a user-to-user forum, so complaints need to be send via the feedbackoption in the main menu.

On Google Drive you don't have such artificial intelligence,  but that is a platform for technical use merely.

PS: normally you don't need to pay for Photos unless you want to backup everything at original quality. But on Drive you can't prevent paying because everything stays at original quality there - so each byte counts.

I recently made a video in the Photos app using the assistant. I started the video on my phone (Pixel 2 XL)  then finished editing on browser. When I'm watching the video on Chrome (for Mac), the audio on all the video clips and theme music plays normal. When I watch the video or download it, audio is missing from the last few video clips. I'm not sure what's causing it since they play fine in edit mode and on browser but on my phone or downloaded, no audio on those same clips.

Not sure if it makes a difference but I chose the "New" video option on the assistant tab. Once I selected the videos, it made a movie for me. I kept the same movie but added more clips at the end. The clips I added are the ones that no longer have audio when downloaded but play fine in browser.

Hello Philip,

Thanks for posting in the Google Photos Support Community.

I understand and I know how important Google Photos is for you. Please give the below steps a try in a sequence to help resolve the issue:
  • Check your internet connection (mobile data).
  • Close the Google Photos app and re-launch it.
  • Sign out and sign back in to Google Photos with the same Google Account.
  • Clear App data:

Answer:

Thanks for the tips. I only had to get to the step for signing out and signing back into Google photos for it to work. It's slightly disappointing that it has to re-download as much as it does, but thankfully pay for storage so the original quality of everything is intact.

Thanks!

Answer:

Hello, I spoke too soon (just hadn't gotten around to responding on this page). It seems that the folder is still not backing up past a certain date.

I haven't found anything on this topic, but does anyone know if the issue is with using WhatsApp backup to Google Drive, where it stores all media? If it is turned on, does Google then ignore backup & sync for WhatsApp media folders?

With both turned on, I would expect duplicate files would be backed up that way. However, if that is there isn't a way to browse WhatsApp images and videos in Google Photos, which is a huge drawback.

Can anyone please verify?

Searched the web for an answer. But it is still not clear.

Hi Mike,

each country has different setup and is it currently not available to order in one country for delivery to another.

The Opera browser has a built in VPN and I live in the UK  If I turn the VPN on selecting Americas and open the photos books page it gives me the cost in $ and I assume I can order as if located in the US but would need a US payment option.

I guess the same is possible in the reverse direction, if you decide to try, please let us know if it works,

Peter

I just tried using pureVPN - which I use anyway - to access photobooks while VPNing to the UK.  It still pulled up my google  photos and gave me pricing in UK Pounds - so it looks as though this might work.  Thanks for the advice.

Question: I would like to unlink my camera roll to Google Photos. How is this done?

Unlink my camera roll to Google Photos

The Google Photos app can do two things:
  • It acts as an Image Viewer, showing the photos on your device.
I am not aware of a way to turn this off
  • It can automatically upload photos of your camera roll to Google Photos (Backup & Sync).
You can turn that option off (via "Settings" or tap cloud icon in right upper corner).

Answer:

It is not clear which thoughts are behind your question, but you can hide some sensitive pictures by archiving them in the Google app. That will cause no problems in the Cameraroll.
Or don't use Google at all and stick to Apple only.

Freeing up space

First: did you also empty the trash bin (https://photos.google.com/trash)?

There are many complaints that storage is not recovered immediately after having deleted photos. But there is a better solution: you can use "Recover storage" in https://photos.google.com/settings to convert all photos/videos to the free "High Quality". Your photos will be compressed (same number of pixels if not more than 16MP, but smaller file size) but still look the same on a screen, and no longer use storage.

Respected sir/Madam i have deleted my backup files and photos from my this account and i mistakenly deleted it from trash folder too because i was not familiar to google photos .kindly help me to recover all.

Answer:

Naeem, deleted Photos are stored in Trash for up to 60 days, if you delete Photos again from trash, that's two times deletion.

Unfortunately, once Photos are deleted from trash there is no way to retrieve them back :(

I have an issue with the Favorites feature. On web/desktop, it's only showing two photos, even though I have more than that favorited. On mobile, all the Favorites show up as expected. It seems like a bug, because on web/desktop, I can see the missing photos in the Favorites thumbnail, but when I click into the album, they're not there.

I've already tried clearing my cache, trying another browser, etc. Seems like an issue with my account somehow.

Question: How I can get my deleated picture

I do not have any idea

Hi Lala

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Photos app Photos.
  2. At the top left, tap Menu Menu and then Trash Trash.
  3. Touch and hold the photo or video you want to recover.
  4. At the bottom, tap Restore. The photo or video will be back:
    1. In your phone
    2. Into the "Photos" section of the app.
    3. Into any albums it was in.
If you deleted an image and then emptied the trash, then you cannot recover the image via Google Photos.

You can research and try third-party data recovery tools that attempt to recover images from the local storage on your phone. I don't have any recommendation.

I have been saving my photos on to my pc, sometimes I upload photos to google from various devices and they will be over several months. I don't want to go back and download every folder all over again just so I don't miss 1 or 2 photos that have been uploaded. Is there a way of only downloading photos that have never previously been downloaded?

Hello,

Few Days back I created an album but before it get uploaded to your servers, I deleted it but still the processing of uploading photos is running
(appearing in notification bar). I had restarted the app, cleared it's cache and disabled it and enabled it again but still the problem is not solved. It's keep showing uploading.

I hope you will help me in resolving this problem as soon as possible.

Thanks in advance.

Answer:

Not quite clear what you have done because in the normal way of creating an album on Google Photos, nothing is uploaded because the files already were stored at Google.
Or not?

I only can suggest:
  1. Log-out under the 3 small lines and close the app.

  2. Restart the phone and restart the app if you have good wifi for at least an hour.

  3. Log-in again under its 3 small lines and check your backupsetting. Then the original contents of the app will get rebuild and hopefully your problem is solved then.
Good luck

I had face grouping enabled since when it became available. I didn't have issues with it until recently.

New face groups are no longer being created. I've got many photos of a particular person but they simply don't show up in the People section. I already went through Show/Hide Faces.

People already having a face group are still being recognized without any issues. Only new people have this issue.

Answer:

Hi Adityarup Laha,

Create a album for new people and add their photos into their album. This process will help Google Photos' algorithm to identify the new people.

Question: Occasionally my photos are organized by date edited, instead of date taken, though the EXIF has both

I am a professional photographer and I use G Photos as my primary sharing method with clients. That means I upload thousands of edited photos (edited in Adobe Lightroom).

When I upload certain batches of photos, Google decides to sort them by Date Modified/Created, rather than Date Taken. When I download the image, all EXIF data is preserved, including both dates. I have no idea wtf is going on, but it's driving me bonkers.

It seems that this only occurs to single batches of uploads at a time? I am using my Pixel 3XL to upload, but the the organization blunder seems to happen irrespective of me using my phone. When uploading with my 3XL, sometimes uploads will be organized correctly, sometimes they wont.

Does anyone have a solution or workaround? I really hate having swathes of photos out of place on my timeline.

Answer:

I would not expect using Google Photos by a professional photographer, because it is about the most unprofessional site ever created after good old Picasaweb. But it basically can be used free of costs, so we should not complain at all.

A good workflow would be to connect your Pixel with your computer for copying its new content like you do with your "Canon". Then edit all in Lightroom, export as 4K jpg's (and movies) and then upload straight into photos.google.com in your Chromebrowser and then you need to choose the right uploadquality at photos.google.com/settings before (uploading via your Pixel is not a good idea).
Then you also are able to create an album for that specific client which can be shared immediately.
Then you will have no troubles with times anymore.

That also means that you should switch-off syncing to Google in your Pixel to avoid a lot of near duplicates on photos.google.com which need to be deleted.

Answer:

@Baker,

I would suggest putting the batches into Albums as soon as you upload them and ignore the timeline. Far better than going bonkers. You could then select all and batch change the dates if really needed as long as the batches are not in the hundreds.

Answer:

And for incidental mistakes, check the date on photos.google.com because in the individual infopanels you can see the timezone now also and that maybe wrong by reasons unknown:

But a better workflow may prevent such irritating problems and my proposal included creating albums immediately after uploading.
