Every morning when I turn on my computer, there's a pop-up menu that says "Google Auto BackUp." Below that is a "sign in." I sign in with my email address and password. Then a message appears (accompanied by a "clunk" sound) that says "Failed to access account information." If I close that, the original menu reappears.  This can go on forever.

Answer:

You are a victim of the obsolete Google Backup app probably installed in the very past together with some update for Picasa. Sign-in to Googel is broken also.
Simply remove that software with the same name from your computer (not Picasa, that can stay if still used).
Not clear if this backup ever has functioned, but you can safely log-in to photos.google.com to check what you have there - maybe merely from your smartphone and before 2017 from your computer.

Question: Find deleated photos

Recover deleated photos

Hi Bill,

if the deleted photos are still in the Google Photos Trash you might be able to restore them as explained in these instructions https://support.google.com/photos/answer/6128867?co=GENIE.Platform%3DAndroid&oco=1

There have been some reports of Google Drive being able to restore user’s deleted photos, but others have not been successful. I'm not sure under what conditions photos were/were not recoverable.
Below are steps that another user posted here Steps:
  1. Go to Google Drive help and click on contact us.
  2. Select any option, but selecting Missing or deleted files is recommended. Then select Request chat option.
  3. IMPORTANT NOTE: Don't tell them that you are trying to restore Google Photos.
REASON:   Our storage is shared across Google Drive, Gmail, Google Photos. Google Drive help is there to assist you only on Drive related queries. So, if you tell them that you are about to restore permanently deleted Google Photos, they will end the chat with giving you this product forums link which is not at all useful. Just tell them that you've accidentally permanently deleted some files in Google Drive and you need those files back

I'm not sure if this still works since Google Photos and Drive syncing was disconnected, but the Photos team does not have access to deleted files.

I have photos in gallery still on phone but all sd phots deleted off phone but are in Google photos. Will getting a new phone delete my photos? Im so worried because I have sp many newborn photos of my son on there I dont want to lose them.

Answer:

Hi Samantha,

Thanks for reaching out to the Google Photos Help Community.

Just to confirm, are you referring to your SD card photos  being backed up on your account and deleted from from SD card? If so, you may check your back up status to ensure all the photos and videos are backed up sucessfully. Here's how:
  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Photos app .
  2. At the top:
    • If you see a number: It means there's still that many photos that haven't been backed up.
    • Back up is complete: If you see Upload complete .
    • "Waiting for Wi-Fi": Change your settings or connect to a Wi-Fi or mobile network. Tap the card to change your settings.
    • Back up is off: If you see Back up off . Tap to turn on back up.
    • "A photo or video was skipped": A photo or video is not uploading because it doesn't meet our requirements:
      • Photos can't exceed 75MB or 100 megapixels
      • Videos can't exceed 10GB
This way, you can confirm that all the deleted photos from your SD card are backed up to your Google Account and you'll be able to access them from any device.

Let me know if you have any additional questions.

Best,
Nadia

Answer:

Thanks for checking, visiting the website with a mobile browser is fine too.

This seems to isolate the issue to the Google Photos app or your setup. I suggest that you clear the data of the Google Photos app, here's how to do it:
  1. on your mobile device, open the Settings app
  2. tap Apps and notifications
  3. tap Show all apps
  4. tap Google Photos
  5. tap Storage
  6. tap Clear storage

Answer:

The correct option is the one to clear the data, apologies for the confusion.

Clearing the data of the Google Photos app doesn't delete any photos or videos, only some housekeeping data the app automatically generates again the next time it's opened. However, for extra safety, before proceeding you may copy the photos from your device to a computer through a USB cable.

Thank you! So i cleared the data. When i try to favourite something in the app it still doesnt work straight away. Sometimes if i try and trigger the backup it appears later on. Almost as though something needs to be refreshed before it works. But again its still not working normally. Hi Matt,

Welcome to the Google Photos Help Community.

I certainly understand the importance of being able to view photos. I'd suggest you ensure that you're signed in to the right account on your device. Also, check for the following things:
  1. Are they in the trash: https://photos.google.com/trash.
  2. If you suddenly lost your photos, they might have a different date. If a photo is added from a device with different date and time settings, the timestamp may be wrong. Learn how to change timestamps on photos.
Also, search for a person, place, or thing in the photo:
  1. On your iPhone or iPad, open the Google Photos app .
  2. At the top, type what you want to find, like "dogs", "New York City", or someone you've labeled.
If your search is coming up empty, try:
  • Search with a different keyword.
  • Search again in 3—5 days. It can take awhile for photos to be searchable.
Make sure back up and sync is on. Only backed up photos can be searched. Turn on backup.

Question: How do I create a slideshow of an album I made in google photos?

Slideshow from album

Hi Beth,

Welcome to the Google Photos Product Help Forum.

It is simple to do on a computer, just go into the album, go to the 3 dots and select "Slideshow" and use the cursor control keys on the keyboard or mouse to advance or reverse through the images.  From a computer, it is easy to connect most computers to most modern televisions for display.

From iOS it is a little more dependent on what hardware and tools you have.  I believe that you should be able to do screen mirroring (depending on the hardware) then go into the album (you can tap the screen to make the elements such as Share, Favorite, Comments, etc. disappear).  You can also get a fairly expensive Lightning Cable to HDMI converter to connect an iPhone/iPad to a television.

If you won't be doing it often, or if you will be going to what to show your slideshow(s) in places where you don't have control over the display/TV/projector/whatever it is probably easiest to use a laptop and HDMI cable.

Best regards, Dougsap (volunteer Google Photos user)

Answer:

I would like this feature in order to be able to turn an old iPad into a photo frame. We need to be able to designate albums to show (I don't want all my craigslist photos to show lol) and set timings between photos.

Answer:

Hi beth, you must try to use the LightMV online video maker to create an awesome slideshow maker.

Answer:

Hi dougsap
Do you happen to know if there is a way to run a slideshow with multiple albums?
For example, I have about 10 albums and would love to run a continuous slide show from a laptop.
Do you know if that's possible?
Appreciate your help, thank you!

Answer:

Hi Carol,

>> Do you happen to know if there is a way to run a slideshow with multiple albums?

It is not possible.

You could:
1.  Create a new album with the contents of all others (if you don't hit the limit which is greater than 1999 images and MIGHT be 10,000.. I have not tested this recently).  Or,
2.  Download all of the images to a (possibly temporary) folder and use a Windows based viewer.

Sorry, there is some pain (and risk of wasted effort) with either approach.

Best regards,  Dougsap (volunteer Google Photos user)

I uploaded few hundred photos from my trip in Hawaii today. Google Photos seems to have got the timestamp wrong for many of the photos. I can't seem to find the pattern on what's happening.

Here's a link to the album that has 2 samples - https://photos.app.goo.gl/Xp6TCtpGKcfeBgSY7

You can download the photos and see that EXIF doesn't match the timestamp on google photos. I add GPS info to all my photos within Lightroom before uploading. I've never had this issue before.

Any ideas how to fix this?

Answer:

"I can't seem to find the pattern on what's happening. "
Exactly. There are many similar reports recently, and I experienced myself that one photo of a series taken at the same place with the same camera was way off. Very annoying since Photos relies on dates for sorting. But so far the team keeps silent ...

Answer:

Exactly. There are few photos from my set which have proper date/time. I don't know why Google is trying to guess the timestamp of the photos instead of just using what's embedded in the EXIF.

This is so frustrating.

Answer:

Did you edit these photos in the Photos app? The photo editor has been broken for several months and replaces the EXIF timestamp every time you save an edit.

Answer:

@Stephen,

Editing should NOT change the date used in Google Photos.  Photos should use DateTimeOriginal or Date Taken, the time the photo was taken. For some reason I do not understand they often do change that date in their database. The EXIF data in the photo remain untouched.

Answer:

You're right; The editor updates DateTime but leaves DateTimeOriginal alone as it should. It's the Photos backend that's screwing up and ignoring the original capture date.

Answer:

Very messed up. All my photos are processed with LR, and once Google Photos backs them up, they are still messed up! So in my case, nothing to do with the iPhone Photo App.

Answer:

This is making using Photos completely useless.   Why are they changing the exif data for any reason?   This is the problem with getting locked into one ecosystem.   Im taking photos with my camera, processing them in LR, all of the exif data is fine when I look at it with my viewer, and bam!  I upload it to google photos and the timestamp is off by 6 hours exactly.   WTF?

Answer:

Yeah it messed up somehow I too was unable to find pattern of that timestamps, all of the pics from my birthday have suddenly moved to a different date 😅 it is a bit frustrating

I accidentally permanently deleted 128 photos, which I had told to backup.

The photos were in my "Camera" album. I selected "free up space\

Answer:

Chris, sorry for what happened.

But deleting from the Camera album even though they are backed will remove it from the cloud and your device.

Nonetheless, have you checked your trash? It should be in there.

Answer:

How sad. How come those 128 photos insisted on staying on the camera folder when others do not? (When I say "free up space\

Answer:

But if free-up spacing did not delete these 128, there were not backupped for any reason unknown - large movies in between normal pictures or life-shots can cause enormous delays.
So they probably were in the pipeline to get backupped and then it must be a bug in the free-up space action that the procedure did not check accurately enough if they really were arrived in cloud correctly.

The problem for us is that there is no Google here for assisting and checking, so we hardly are able to report this abnormal behavior as a bug. And we also are not able to test such erratic behavior ourselves.

Good that you are that sportive, but next time don't delete from phone before you have seen them on photos.google.com in your browser - that's your only security.

Creating albums from many individual photos is easy enough but not sure how to create an overarching title type album that consists of several sub-albums, subgroups of photos or chapters if you will.  Any help would be appreciated.

Answer:

OK.  So can share file and sub-file directories and put the photos (jpg or other format) there, just making sure the size doesn't exceed my total memory allowance?

Answer:

Yes indeed, but perhaps not every format. Or the format can be stored, but not viewed.

Be aware that Drive has a rather poor viewer compared to Photos - I do prefer Microsoft OneDrive much more because it is specialised in photos and is part of my synchronised filemanagement in Windows-10.
But there you only have 5 GB for free and you need to pay for having up to 50 GB.

I do use it for the historic part of my collection, because Google Photos can't cope with undated pictures and does not understand serially numbered files either.
And because I can share a main folder including many subfolders with one link - not 50.

I want to continue to upload from my iMac since uploader stopped working on 5/12/18...but don't want new Backup & Sync to start over and duplicate my iPhotos library.

Answer:

Hello Michael,

Welcome to the Google Photos Help Community.

Unfortunately, Backup & sync will start over again. However, just to let you know that Google Photos should detect duplicates regardless of upload device, unless the files have been modified during transfer between devices. Even if a single bit is different in two images, then Google Photos won't see them as duplicates and it will consider them as two different photos. If you still see the duplicate photos, you may need to delete them manually.

Keep me posted.

I downloaded a generic jpeg off Google image, it shows up in "downloads" folder in the app list, but when I go to "photo" and choose device folder, it's not there.

After some researching online (and with bewilderment), I went on Bing.com to download the same photo, and it worked (showed up in device folder as intended).

I've used Google/Google phone for years and it's the first time I've noticed this.  Looks like a bug but no idea which part is wrong.

Answer:

Hi Jian

thanks for writing.

I too was able to recreate the symptom.  That is, images downloaded from a Google Image search and saved to device, doesn't trigger a Downloads folder from appearing in Google Photos. However, an image downloaded for example from another site, creates an image in the Downloads folder within Google Photos.

Please use the Feedback menu option in Google Photos to report this to the team.  I don't know if this is bug or intended behavior for Google Image search results.  I do know that Google Images changed within the last year and how it presented image download and share options available to users. Your reported symptom may be a result of those changes, or a bug.  Err on the side of caution, and report via Photos feedback, to be safe.

Thanks

The amount of information that you have provided is very limited, so I don't think I can help you.

If you don't see anything in the trash and you did not delete anything, the only thing which really makes sense is that you are in the wrong account.  Maybe a family member used your phone or computer and logged into a different account.

Hi Dawn,

Welcome to the Google Photos Product Help Forum!

It sounds like the Google Account that you are using is either a school, work or other organization's account - no just a plain Gmail (typically).  Normally, this would indicate that Google Photos is not enabled by the organization's Administrator.

Double check the accounts on:
1.  The 3 line menu, and

Thanks for the update, let's see what else we can do.

Prior to realizing the photos were missing did you ever visit the photos.google.com website to check if they were all there? Do you have only one Google account?

Question: Photos won't upload

My photos have not uploaded since May 22. I'm constantly getting the message that it couldn't upload them. I think it may be related to the change they made when getting rid of the desktop loader (which I'm pretty sure I did not have... mine happened automatically). Also annoying is the fact that it wants me to log in every time I turn my computer on. Anyone experience this or have ideas how I could fix it? The answers in the help section are not helping at all.

Answer:

Same issue here.  I was asked to update my acct and renew extra memory purchased for another year.  Then auto back ups stopped, need to log in each time and photos after that date (about May 26) will not upload from same PC. Auto backup/upload from iPhone still working fine.  Cannot figure it out...frustrating

Answer:

Hello Kristin,

Thanks for posting in the Google Photos Support Community.

Unable to back up photos can sometimes be upsetting. I'd recommend trying the below steps to check if they resolve the issue:
  1. Open the Google Photos app on your mobile device .
  2. At the bottom, tap Assistant .
  3. Read the first card. If it says:
  • "Back up & sync is off": Tap "TURN ON" on the card to back up your device's photos and videos, including ones you capture in the future.
  • "A photo or video was skipped": A photo or video on your mobile device doesn't meet our uploadrequirements:
    • Photos can't exceed 75MB or 100 megapixels.
    • Videos can't exceed 10GB.
It does take approximately 24-48 hours for the photos and videos to sync across all devices. Please ensure to have 'Backup & sync' enabled on the Google Photos settings while you're backing up your photos and videos. It's possible that Google Photos is merely scanning your library again, the scan will take some time, but it shouldn't re-upload the photos entirely as duplicates. The app may look like it's doing this but it's actually doing a re-scan of the photos.

Meanwhile, please confirm the device you're using. Is it an Android, iOS or desktop?

Keep me posted.

Best,
Amanda

Answer:

I'm using a desktop. Photo backup is definitely turned on. I have to sign in every time. Is there a fix to that? Then it's not able to download anything... I'm regularly getting the error message that it was unable to download.

Answer:

Getting worse! Now when I try to sign in (if the box will even show it's text) it tells me "there's something unusual about how you're signing in... (attaching a picture). It send something to my phone. I click yes that it's me and, on my phone, get confirmation that all is well, but on my computer it gets stuck and won't move past this screen.

Answer:

I gave up and uninstalled photos. Then I went to google and installed the photos auto backup. It's completely different. The downside is that it has to go through ALL my photos again to determine what it has to upload. With over 92,000 photos to consider, it's going to take a while. I wish I knew of a way to reduce the time. :/

Answer:

I went to google play on the android phone and updated the google photos app. That was all I needed to do, the recent photos were then added automatically. It would have been nice to have got a message to warn me. Google mail has paused before in a similar way. You would think Google would have found a way around these inconveniences by now and notified us when need for updates halt normal functions.

Answer:

I am not using sync. Only want to upload selected images to certain albums in Google photo online. I have used this for years before. Now it says "cant update to album". No explanation at all. Using android.

Question: How to delete all photos from google photo, but leave photos only from last two months?

I have google photos account with 10000 photos I would like to remove all, except pictures from last 2 months.
There is no management website where I can do anything with my files on google photos.
Do any one know that mystery trick to - just - delete pictures in bulk I want?

Answer:

You can click the first photo on the website, then hold down shift and click the last to select a whole range, however it's limited to a few hundred photos at a time I believe. Unfortunately there's no other way.

Answer:

Up to about 500 due to stack limits of general browsers when viewed via photos.google.com
You can see the dates, so you can start selecting two months ago.

Maybe you can select much more (and much faster) in the Google Photos app on mobiles, but I have no information about that - apart from the fact that too many users here seem to be able to permanent delete all in one split second :-)

But what application or problem is behind this question, because I would suggest not using Google Photos at all ???

Answer:

I have the same issue, i want to delete more than 1TB of photos... and since google disabled the google drive integration (i wonder why...) i basically lost fine grain control of my photos, the web interface is not a solution! I would have to spend days deleting my photos one set at a time since there is not other way to mass delete your photos like before when we had google drive integration.

This to me reeks of an attempt to further lock us in google photos, taking out control of our own photos, but you know what? this is exactly the kind of attitude that makes me go the extra mile and migrate my library to other now better and more functional services, and this is the story i will share with everyone regarding google photos services.

Thanks

Answer:

The Google Photos/Drive sync was disabled because it was buggy and confusing. It was great when it worked, but it often didn't work as it should and many people expected it to work in ways it was never intended to/didn't. It would have been great if Google could have fixed the issues and made it work as expected, with a real 2 way sync but they didn't. We'll never know why, but I'd guess it wasn't a feature most people used so rather than dedicating time to change it, they saved that work for improving other areas of the app. Or maybe they wouldn't fix it, who knows.
I'm sorry to hear you'll be moving your library but I cetainly understand why.

Answer:

@xflood
Then you better can skip that account at all, because you want to leave Google forever.
But that maybe problematic because of Gmail.
Therefore the question arises: why don't you apply Recover storage at https://photos.google.com/settings in order to downgrade all to High Quality which is free of charge by using zero TB. See this link
That process will take some days at Google until the button becomes grey.
Then you can leave it all there - its private unless for selected items shared.

Question: Hi all. Is it me or is there no way of having a Google Photos tile on Windows 10 with Surface Pro?

Tried searching on internet. Seems like this is a rabbit hole.

Hi Carl,

If you open an Edge window for Google Photos then click on the top right 3 dots; More tools; Pin this page to Start, you will get a Google Photos tile in the Start Menu

Hope that's what you are looking for,

Peter

Answer:

Thanks Peter, yes that's what I want, although I don't use Edge but have it installed and will try.

I just thought that in today's day and age one wouldn't need to jump through these hoops. If a company wants you to use their product, expecting users to go out and hunt and research is not really the most effective way. Because of that and the fact that one day many of my albums were automagically emptied, I'm looking for another photo management alternative. Google had one chance, blew it, now I'll be gone soon from their site.

Thanks again

Answer:

This can also be done in Chrome by following these instructions

You can only pin applications (or shortcuts to "files" within applications, which a website is the equivalent of) as tiles. Since Google Photos isn't its own application, you have to pin a shortcut to the website. Unfortunately MS doesn't make it any easier to pin website shortcuts as tiles without "jumping through hoops", this isn't something Google has control over

Answer:

Thanks, that's all well and good, however, back to square one: they have control over an app or some other executable that would provide such a tile just like OneDrive, Dropbox, and every other app/program out there. The point is it would make sense for a company to alleviate as much hoop jumping as possible if they really wanted people to be users, all "plausible deniability" notwithstanding.

Answer:

Yes Google could develop a desktop program for Google Photos, but they haven't and the purpose of that would be for more than just a desktop tile of course.
The Google equivalent of Dropbox/OneDrive is Google Drive (website) and Back Up and Sync (application), but since your photos are stored in Google Photos that doesn't help here

Some of the photos started appearing in Google photos without me adding them.

I had photos starting 2011 in Google Photos. Then Google stopped syncing between Drive and Photos. That was all fine and no issues happened till that time.

Last week, many photos started appearing on my timeline in Google photos (starting 2005). I checked and those photos are indeed in my Google Drive. However, I never added them or viewed them in Drive or in Google Photos or touched them in any way. They just started appearing suddenly.

Important Note: I appear in almost all of the photos that started appearing (without me adding them).

Any idea what's going on? I would be happy to provide more information if necessary.

Answer:

Hello Jesus,

Thanks for writing back.

Thank you for the screenshot, it was a lot helpful. The gallery page you're referring to isn't related to Google Photos. Hence, I wouldn't be able to help.

However, please know that the sharing option in Google Photos can always be used without any activation as long as you're logged into Google Photos with your Google Account.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Amanda

Hi. My photos version is up to date. Build - 4.12.0.271222815.
Yet I couldn't see memories in Photos. The corresponding option is also not displaying in settings menu. I could see everyone except me is having the option. Also it's been rolled out more than a month ago. What should I do. I am using Android, one plus 6t mobile phone.

Answer:

@Partheeban P,

you are not alone, my main account doesn't have the option either. It's a topic within the group and we have asked the question but not received any update yet. I have a newer account which does have the option on the same phone and the same version of Google Photos. One of Google's mysteries.

Answer:

Same on my Pixel 3 on 2 different accounts. I logged into Photos on my wife's iPhone, however, and memories worked fine. I have had a ticket open with Google Support for 2 weeks which they have completely stopped responding to after passing me around to different departments. Really poor QA and Support by Google on this one.

Answer:

The Google app needs to be connected to good wifi to be able to show your pictures in full glory.
On Apple the app does not not function very well because it can't update in background unless you are able to switch-on background operation in the general app settings for Google Photos.
