I have turned off face recognition but cropped faces are still showing. very weird and annoying

Answer:
Hello Michelle,
Welcome to the Google Photos Help Community.
To assist you better, could you please let me know where exactly do you see this cropped photos? Is it on the "Photos" section on the Google Photos? Also, check if you see the same on the Google Photos app?
Meanwhile, I'd recommend you try restart your computer/laptop first. It might sound simple, but sometimes that's all it takes to fix the issue.
If restarting don't work, try checking it on a different browser than the one you're using to see if it is a browser related issue. If it works and you want to see it on the original browser, try clearing your browser's cache and cookies. If that doesn't help, also try the below steps and see if it helps resolve the issue:
- Try Incognito/private window.
- Disable extensions/add-ons/plug-ins.
Keep me posted.
Best,
Sonya

I have the same issue on google photos website (not the app and it doesn't matter what browser I use). Most of my pics from 2015 are cropped down to a faceshot or other random portion of the picture in a little square. More recent photos and those before 2015 are fine. Please help me recover my original quality, full images.
Thanks,
Paul

Hi Paul. I wish I could help you and myself. I don't know why it happened or how to fix. That's why I posted it. Hope someone can help us both :)

I have this issue as well. Recently I installed the new Sync app and many, many of the photos are now appearing as cropped faces -- the whole, original photos are not visible anywhere. Were you able to solve this?

Windows 10, Google backup/sync.
Doing an all in photos backup to HD QUALITY.
All photos range from 0.5mb (old cellphone photos) up to 15mb max (even my custom made panorama's max that size).
Google photo max per picture is 75mb.
Yet I've got 20,000+ results as to big.
What gives? How can I fix this?
The hard drive source is NTFS, (not fat32, not Exfat).
I'm on Fiber 180/180mbps steady, no modem/throughput issues.
PC is fully defragged,
i5, 4670k/4.1ghz
32gb ddr3/xmp/2400
Raid0 Windows app drive (2x1tb)
Raid 10 Data Drive (4x4tb @ 8tb).
Separate 4tb drive for Page file alone.
No power issues on 1200watt psu,
Video card RX590 8gb.
Sound card if needed for this, Creative Z series (the red light pci-e).
Gigabit ethernet, no throttling, no data caps at my provider. (Checked, not even hit 200gb used of what could be 1tb usable, and unlimited enabled).
Been trying to figure this one out, as I want to sync everything, which is 80,000+photos, but 20,000 are getting rejected for being to big.
Standard 4000x3000 already at 3-4megabytes, is considered to big for hd quality setup and it's WELL under 75mb....
Seriously???
Any thoughts on how to fix this????

re: Size, minimal panorama's, and panorama's of 74.9mb or less will upload in the manual album creation in mass bulk, but the google drive backup of individual folders with jpg/jpeg files of well under that size that are NOT panorama, but standard 16:9 4:3 or similar like standard to high definition ratio pictures randomly in bulk are NOT uploading, no error, just that they're "to big" when they are equal or similar sizes to the other 60,000 photo's that were uploaded already.
Literally no reason for them not to be uploaded, especially when they are literally similar like in size, with no issues for it.

@ Rinus,
regarding the option.
Windows computer is using B&S app. cloud picture with spinning arrows rotating continually.
Folders chosen are all on the Raid 10, using anywhere from 5-100mbps (no where near maximum upload of my speed options, and drive can do 330 megabytes, not megabits,_)
The folders selected are maybe 15 separate folders, and all under 100gb in totality, with potential of 80k+ photos.
But still having sync issues.
Not sure where the challenge is.
The "already on server" due to some actual duplicates (not file name, physical pixel match duplicates due to my own redundancies), are separate from the "to big" list.
The duplicates I get, and can validate, but the to big, make zero sense.

I am still having an issue with this. I have the correct folder to be backed up selected and I have checked the box that says upload newly added photos and videos to Google Photos. It successfully adds new photos to the g drive in the my computers TAB, but it does not send them to my Google Photos. I did have to reinstall Windows, and now two computers show up in the My Computers Tab of the G Drive. I suspect this has something to do with my issue. It worked fine before I reinstalled windows. I load my SD to Lightroom, edit, export as JPEG to a folder on my Comp, and instruct Backup and Sync to send it to both Drive and Photos. It worked like a charm. I really wish I could fix this.

Answer:
- Google allows for some unknown max per day.
- Your panorama's maybe a source of problems because of their extreme ratios.
- All files not accepted by Photos will stick on Drive and will take full storage there.
- So check how far you are already at one.google.com/storage (should be zero on Photos, but probably not on Drive and Gmail).

Happy to take a look if you can share a selection from Drive.

Apart from excessive Gmail, no problems at Drive & Photos.
But you are saying something strange about bulk uploads straight into photos.google.com
Are the folders used in these uploads within the folderselection of B&S?
Because then B&S get confused: it wants to sync these files to Drive but already does find them on Photos.
Something like that.
Please also wait on further comments of Peter, because he may see your pittfall immediately.
Answer:
Off-topic: you may want to delete years of Gmail.
Do that under More > All mail and go right-up to the oldest.
Then select all and trash etc. etc, until 2018 starts.
Thereafter empty the trash.
Then you still may have around 5 GB, but that is more normal.
Apparently Gmail uses a lot more space then you would expect, apart from incidental mails with big attachments.

@Rinus, not much more help I can offer if Peter doesn't want to share any photos skipped as too big.
@Peter, just the one comment about 'already in photos' this was a misleading report as it really meant the there was also a stub file of the Google Photos copy in the Google Photos folder in My Drive. If a photo is just in Google Photos it shouldn't give any reports at all.
You also have the option to contact the Drive team at https://support.google.com/drive/gethelp where choosing the email option after stepping through the suggested help articles gives access to the Google support team responsible for the Backup and Sync interface.

Hi Malaysia,
if the deleted photos are still in the Google Photos Trash you might be able to restore them as explained in these instructions https://support.google.com/photos/answer/6128867?co=GENIE.Platform%3DAndroid&oco=1
Otherwise it’s not possible to recover photos permanently deleted from the Trash. However, you may install to your Android device a deleted photo recovery app https://play.google.com/store/search?q=recover%20deleted%20photos&c=apps and run a scan for anything to recover.
In addition I recommend that you contact the Google Drive support team to see if any deleted files may be recovered. Just open the Google Drive https://support.google.com/drive/?hl=en&authuser=0#topic=14940&contact=1 contact form, click Missing or deleted files, select a contact option, and be sure to tell them you permanently deleted files in Google Drive.

Answer:
Hi Jana,
Welcome to the Google Photos Help Community.
To assist you better, could you please let me know if you've deleted the photos from your Camera roll and Recently Deleted album box? If yes, it looks like the photos and videos didn't backed up properly to your Google Photos account. However, could you please check if you're able to see the photos and videos on web (photos.google.com)?
Meanwhile, please give a try to the steps mentioned below:
1. Disconnect and reconnect the Google account from the Google Photos app on your iOS device.
2. Uninstall and reinstall the app.
3. Restart your phone.
Also, try using the Google Photos app by switching the phone to Safe Mode, here's how you can do so:
- Press and hold your phone's power button for a few seconds until Android prompts you to turn off your phone, just like you would normally do to power it down. Next, tap and hold Power off for a few seconds until your phone asks you to confirm that you want to enter safe mode.
- To get off the safe mode, simply restart the phone.
Also, please try the steps from this "My photos aren't being backed up" help center article. It would be great if you can share a screenshot of the gray boxes you're referring to. Please ensure you mask any personal and/or account information in the screenshot that you'll share.

Yes, these photos were deleted from the iPhone camera roll as well as the "recently deleted" folder. I am also not able to see these photos at photos.google.com
Answer:
The gray / grey icons could mean the photos/videos were not properly uploaded to Google Photos.
Please don't trust the cloud with your photos and videos. You should always have several copies in other places such as external drives.
I'm not able to contact Google for your issue, but you could check out the help page here:

Hi Craig,
with typical settings as per as per the screenshot <visible online> the computer folder hierarchy is recreated in Google Drive before uploading to Google Photos. The Drive entries are part of the design and do not use any quota under normal circumstances. Please let me know if your setup differs,

Answer:
Ok, I have the same settings as you described, so at least that looks to be correct. Thank you for the advice, I appreciate it!
I guess I just dont understand how this is supposed to work: I added Backup and Sync, asked it to only back photos and videos.
Its backing them up, sure: but they are all going to my google DRIVE, not to google PHOTOS.
If I understand you correctly, its moving ALL the photos and videos from my computer to Google Drive. Once its done with that (moving all of them to Google drive), its THEN going to move them to Google Photos?!?

I dont understand why its moving them in that roundabout way. Any insight into the logic here would be appreciated. Thanks
Answer:
The process is more like:
- Upload and checksum photo or video number 1
- Check if it exists in Google photos
- If yes create a stub file in Google Drive linked to the Google Photos copy
- If no create a stub file in Google Drive and upload the photo to Google Photos
- Move on to next photo
The result is a quota free set of stub files in Google Drive reflecting the computer folder hierarchy which can be shared in Google Drive as if they were the originals. This has one advantage of being able to share the complete library of photos from Drive with one link even though the photos are not actually stored in Google Drive.
Answer:
Solved this.
In Preferences, make sure that you have the folder containing your pictures is selected in the My Computer tab and "Upload newly added photos and videos to Google Photos" is checked.
Having the folder containing your pictures selected in the Google Drive tab is not enough. In fact you don't even need to enable this options.
Answer:
Answer:
I got it. I had to re-select the folder for syncing and check and un-check the box for uploading preference twice. Anything new I add goes up to both the drive and photos now. Stuff I added during the period it was not working I had to upload manually. Yay!

Hi Manohar,
Thanks for reaching out to the Google Photos Help Community.
I certainly understand the importance of your photos. Please know that, photos and videos you take with your device's camera and photos saved on your phone are saved to your Google Photos library when you turn on backup and sync.
If you want to get a deleted item back, check your trash to see if you can get it back. If your photo or video has already been backed up and you deleted it, it will remain in your Trash for 60 days.
- On your device, open the Google Photos app
.
- At the top left, tap Menu
, then Trash
.
- Touch and hold the photo or video you want to recover.
- At the top right, tap Restore
. That photo or video will be restored to your Google Photos library and added back into any albums it was in.
Also, if something isn't in your trash, it can't be restored. You won't be able to restore a photo if:
- You moved it to trash more than 60 days ago.
- You moved it to trash, then emptied your trash.
- You permanently deleted it from your trash.
- You permanently deleted it from your device's Gallery app, without being backed up.
Check out these handy help center articles for more information on how to See if you can restore deleted photos & videos and Can't find Google Photos.
Keep me posted.

Hello, I'm so furios right now. I noticed that all my videos I recorded from my last vacation are in low quality (recorded in 4k on ios) although I had original quality backup! I deleted the videos on my phone and but backed them up in cloud. When I came home, low quality vids (2,1MP with ca 10MB) The pics are fine, but videos, destroeyd! Whats happened??? Any ideas? Can I really trust this service in the future? I'm also paying for the space in google photos so this really sucks :/
Answer:
Hi Miran,
Thanks for reaching out to the Google Photos Help Community.
I certainly understand the importance of being able to view original quality videos on your account. Could you please confirm, if you're experiencing the same issue while trying to play videos through the web version of Google Photos?
If possible, try checking the video quality from another device to see if that helps. If the issue still persists, uninstall & reinstall the Google Photos app on your device.

How do I transfer an entire photo ALBUM to my external drive?
Hi George,
Welcome to the Google Photos Product Help Forum!
On a computer, from the specific album go to the 3 dot menu and select "Download all".
This will download all images in the album to a Zip file. This will not download comments or Description which may have been added via the Information Panel (I doubt if most people do this anyway).
Zip files group together sets of files and various free utililies are used to make the individual files available in the file system (usually by right-clicking on the Zip file).
Let me know if this does not make sense or if you have problems.

If you deleted pictures using your phone's stock gallery app, and those pictures were not previously uploaded to Google Photos, then unfortunately there is nothing that Google or any of the volunteers in this forum can do to help you get them back.

I'm talking about the Google Photos right hand column starting with:
Info
Add a description
Albums
Etc.
Very hard to read the small print and, worse, it's color is soft grey.
Can the font size and/or color be edited?
Ed
Answer:
Ed,
Currently, there's no built-in way to resize the Info panel on the website, nor to change the font size or background color.
The background color should be plain white (#FFFFFF). The text of the Album title, short date, file name, and location should be 11.5 point font and nearly black (#1F1F1F). The details text should be 10 points and medium gray (#737373).
An easy way that might work to change the size is to use your browser's zoom feature. Click the 3-dot icon in the upper right corner (in Chrome) and select Zoom to increase or decrease the size of the page. Of course, that will increase everything, not just the text.
Another possible option might be to use a Chrome add-on called Stylish. This add-on allows you to customize almost any website you want to, changing everything from colors to fonts and even the layout. If you've got the patience to learn to use it, perhaps it's just what you need.

Hi Chanoknunt Songtragul,
There is no way to recover the permanently deleted photos.
But, a small chance that you can get those photos/videos by visiting https://get.google.com/albumarchive
Answer:
Good afternoon.
Unfortunately, if you chose to permanently delete your pictures, it's unlikely that you will be able to get them back.
Below is information from the official Google Photos Help page about this:
Restore photos & videos
If you deleted an item and want it back, check your trash to see if it’s there. If the item is not in your trash, it may be permanently deleted.
- On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Photos app
.
- At the top left, tap Menu
![]()
Trash
.
- Touch and hold the photo or video you want to restore.
- At the bottom, tap Restore. The photo or video will be back:
- In your phone’s gallery app
- In your Google Photos library
- In any albums it was in
Don't see the photo or video?
If a deleted photo or video isn't in trash, you can’t restore it. You won't be able to restore a photo if:
- You moved it to trash more than 60 days ago.
- You moved it to trash, then emptied your trash.
- You permanently deleted it from your trash.
- You permanently deleted it from your device’s Gallery app, without backing it up first.

Don't backup the folder that your emojis are saving to. In your settings, turn of that particular folder. Move everything in that same folder that you do want backed up to another folder that is being backed up.

A followup, here is what the photos on my Wife's desktop look like through the OSX Finder:

You can see some sub-folders also, as we downloaded wedding photos directly from the Wedding website to the Google Drive->Google Photos folder using the FInder.
Answer:
Hi Michael, do you still have the option in Drive settings enabled to save photos to the folder, and have you ever tried deleting it to see if it reloads as that would mean that older photos would never be added again.
You can’t see your wife’s photos as you only see a shared link, the photos would have to be copied to your Drive, outside your Google Photos folder before being able to see them with the Google Photos option enabled at https://photos.google.com/settings
That’s probably enough for now, let me know if it makes sense,
Regards,
Peter
Answer:
Hi PeteranDi, Thank you for reaching out to me!
Here are the settings dialogue:

I don't really see a setting exactly matching your description.
When we say "Have you ever tried deleting it" do we mean deleting the Google Photos folder, or the subfolders? Also when we say deleting does that mean using the Drive webpage selecting the GOogle Photos folder, and clicking on the Trash Can?

Or does it mean deleting the Google Photos folder locally on the computer using the OSX Finder and dragging it into the trash?
Regarding me sharing my Google Drive to my wife, we are saying "the photos would have to be copied to my Drive outside of Google Photos" Currently her disk on her laptop is full because of these photos. So we are trying to understand how to get them into the shared Google Photos folder on the web. Is there a way to use the webpage for Google Drive or the web page for Google Photos, to copy those photos to the correct place so they will be found in my Google Photos?
Answer:
Thanks for the screenshots, it makes things much easier.
The setting is Create a Google Photos folder - Automatically put your Google Photos in a folder in My Drive and if you have ever Removed the Google Photos folder or sub folders, either in Drive or locally on your computer with Drive Sync enabled them it will only have photos uploaded after the deletion date. The same would be the case if you moved the folders, sub folders, or photos out of the local folder as this would have the same effect.
From the date of deletion, the Google Photos folder would contain new photos which were uploaded from Android or iOS or direct to the web with the Upload command. The Desktop Backup and Sync builds it's own hierarchy in https://drive.google.com/drive/computers and does not populate the Google Photos folder.
For photos placed in the Google Photos folder, they do not enjoy a special status, they are just files you have put there and they take up Drive quota, there have been recent reports that photos placed in the Google Photos folder are not syncing to Google Photos with the option to Sync photos & videos from Google Drive enabled and we are recommending that users create a separate folder structure with a new folder at the same level under My Drive

I will pause there as I feel as though I might be drifting off course

The Community is made up of volunteers trying to help by sharing our experience, we have no magic links into Google and are not in possession of any more information than what is in the blog.
The best way to let Google know your thoughts is to provide feedback, see:-
In summary, to send feedback to the Google Photos team
- Go to photos.google.com or open the Google Photos app
.
- At the top left, open the Menu
, then select Help & feedback and/or Send feedback
- You can tell them things like:
- What you like or dislike about the app
- Things that are confusing or don't work
- Things that would help you use Google Photos better
I would suggest the most effective way would be to start the feedback with
#Drive & Photos followed by your thoughts and hopefully some constructive suggestions if you foresee any problems.

I've tried to back up these videos for a while. A lot of these videos are between 2 and 8 minutes. I've tried logging back in and out but that didn't work. I tried deleting the app and re-downloading it but it hasn't made a difference. I hope that someone can find me a solution or else I'm gonna go insane lol.
Answer:
Hi Manmeet,
Thanks for reaching out to the Google Photos Help Community.
I certainly understand the importance of being able to backup videos. Please know that, if a photo or video didn't back up, it might be because:
- Item size: Photos larger than 75MB or 100MP, videos larger than 2GB, and items smaller than 256 x 256 can't be backed up.
- Slow network connection: Your device might have a slow or no network connection.
- Unsupported file type: See which file types can be backed up.
You may also upload the videos manually to Google Photos from your browser:
- On your computer, open photos.google.com.
- At the top right, click Upload.
- Find and select your photos.
- Click Open.
You might also want to check this help center article for more information on My photos aren't backing up.
Keep me posted.

Answer:
Hi Johan,
Early on (during the Beta release of iOS 11), HEVC and HEIC were not supported but they have been since sometime in September https://www.digitaltrends.com/photography/heif-and-hevc-ios-11-macos-high-sierra/
I don't use them because if I forget and share them (as individual files via email) people on some devices and computers have issues.. So, I just use "Most compatible" format in the Camera settings.

Me and my partner are trying to share all of our photos through google photos, using the shared library. I can see all of his photo's but he can't see mine. I have made sure that the settings say he can see all my photos and there are no restrictions, I have also made sure he is not blocked just in case. I'm really not sure what else to do because we have both looked and all the settings look the same for our accounts, but mine won't work.
Answer:
Hi Amy,
When you go on YOUR device to "Shared libraries" in https://photos.google.com/u/0/settings
under "Your photos" does it look ~normal~?
In HIS Google Photos App (or https://photos.google.com/u/0/ on a computer), go to the 3 line menu and look for a notification under "Shared libraries"
Now, just fishing...
On one of his devices, may sure that Chrome is logged on in the account you are trying to share with. Look for notifications in the upper righthand corner.
I hesitate to tell you to remove what you have and start over (if you have "Add to library" set on YOUR account), because of unknown possible risk of the creation of duplicates. However, if you don't have "Add to library" set the risk is very low).

Clear the cache and data on Android: (note: this does not delete photos from your phone or the cloud)

- tap Apps (or Application Manager)
- tap Google Photos

- tap CLEAR DATA

Don't know what to do

Answer:
Don't backup the folder that your emojis are saving to. In your settings, turn of that particular folder. Move everything in that same folder that you do want backed up to another folder that is being backed up.
It's a manual process but there's no way to filter on type of image.
Answer:
Amanda,
What Rob has said is accurate. If you look in the sidebar menu on the left side of the Google Photos app, you'll see Device Folders. Tapping that will show you all the folders on your phone that contain images. Any folder thumbnail that has a little cloud with a strikethrough line is not set to be automatically backed up to the cloud. So, just make sure the folder containing those emoji images is not set to be backed up.
What I'm wondering about, though, is why your emoji images are showing up at all. Those are typically found deeper within the Android system file structure, so they shouldn't be showing up in any gallery or photo viewer type of app. That's assuming, of course, that you're talking about the regular SMS emoji images that you select with your keyboard when typing a message.
If that's not the emoji images you're talking about (e.g., if you downloaded emoji pictures or got them from somewhere else), then it makes sense that they might show up in the Google Photos app and might get backed up to the cloud. In that case, it's because the Google Photos app sees them the same way it sees any other image you downloaded or created because the app doesn't actually "look" at your pictures or decide what to upload.
Let me know if you're still having problems with this.
Regards,
~ Greg

FYI, I'm a power user, and all settings are correct and most photos are recognized. I just happen to have tens of thousands of photos, and I've noticed a bunch of photos are not showing up for certain people when clicking on their face group. When I find the photo and look at the info details, there is no face recognized, so there's no way to add it to a face group.
If you've also experienced this issue, please report it to Google Photos through the app. They need to hear from more of us about this.
