Thanks for posting to the Google photos community.

If your photo was backed up to Google photos please login to the exact same account you used to backup your images from your phone that was lost. If you used more than one account on the phone for example another personal account or a work account please log into those accounts to see if the images were backed up to those accounts by accident.

If the photos were not backed up and the phone was lost there's nothing else we can do. You may want to see if you emailed the photo or used a social media app to share the image to see if you can recover the image that way. Best wishes,

I have been doing much security and privacy bolstering in the last months and I had previously unsuccessfully reached out to Mr. David Lieb of Google PHOTOS via Facebook messenger. I did not know that he has been facing a health care battle and I truly hope for his well-being and that of his family. 

I would like to know if Google PHOTOS as a corporate entity has any type(s) of unfettered access and use of the photos (products) stored/saved/transferred/taken by its' millions of users worldwide? Are the photos sold, stored, or utilized for any types of areas such as face mapping within our home countries and beyond? Are the individual photos the property of the individual person or of Google PHOTOS or both? By using Google PHOTOS are we automatically providing our consent for our photos to he used or owned in ways not blatantly obvious to us as consumers? In a similar vein as the use of a website automatically providing consent, however informed or uninformed it may be to the use of cookies, data collection, and cross site tracking? Forgive me if I am off track slightly.

In addition, in terms of deleting location data stored within an individual's Google data realm, what "business" requirements would cause or justify Google to retain certain types of data for an extended period of time. As I had questioned and stated many times, in unanswered correspondence with Facebook, why, outside of understandable legal purposes, would corporate entities be entitled to utilize or access the precise or approximate location data of their users? Beyond reporting criminal activity to the appropriate authorities, and targeted marketing and advertising schemas, what are the other, if any reasons behind using and storing/tracking individual  movements and locations? 
In the world we currently find ourselves, you may appreciate why such questions and concerns could cause alarm for many, as it should for most.

I'm trying to free up space on my device so I want to save an album from my phone on Google photos but then delete it from my phone. Every what I try this it deletes photos from both.

 I've selected the back up and sync function, then turned it off and deleted a picture from that album on my device. Checked Google photos and it deleted it from there too.

Tried selecting 'delete from device' on the Google photos album. That also deleted both.

I've tried to copy the photos to a new folder on Google photos. That creates the folder on my device. I then turned off the back up and sync for the new folder and deleted the album from my phone. It deleted the new album from Google photos.

The only thing I haven't tried is the 'free up space' function but I'm not willing to try that as I don't trust that it won't delete all of my photos from both.

Can someone help me? Is there a way of creating an album that is only visible in Google photos and moving the pictures there?

The option you want to use is free up space. Google will remove locally stored photos that are backed up. Read more details at this link:

You may want to also go to the Files by Google app to see other options for freeing up space on your phone besides Google Photos. This could include cached items that are no longer needed, old downloads that are no longer useful, or large files that are backed up already.

I'm not prepared to use the free up space option for two reasons:
1. I don't want to remove all my photos from my phone.
2. I don't trust the app not to remove them from both as the ones I tried to remove say they are backed up but were removed anyway.

There is nothing else I can remove to free up space, so that's not an option either.

Hi

Google Photos was designed to sync changes across your devices. Therefore if you delete a photo on Google Photos it will also delete it from your phone.

To free space on your phone, only use the free up space option. Go to Photos > Profile icon > Free up space.

(Optionally you can do this with a single image by opening an image swiping up to review the menu options and then choosing the option to delete from device. Personally I don't recommend this option because some users may accidentally delete a photo that is not backed up. However if you are careful and you are sure the photo is backed up, then it use it with caution .

If you accidentally select the option to delete a photo you are presented with a alert that lets you know the image will be deleted from your device,  Google photos and all sync devices. Please pay attention to any alerts or warnings when performing an action on Google Photos that they will guide you to the proper solution.

You can check the trash to see if the deleted photo is there. If so, select the photo and the option to restore the image. If the photo is not there, and is not in your backup, then the image is gone. You can decide if you want to attempt data recovery on your phone. I don't have an app recommendation. Typically what you do is download software to your computer, attach your phone to the computer via USB cable, and then attempt data recovery on your phone's local storage.

Thanks for posting to the Photos Community.

You can use the feedback menu option in Google photos to make feature requests. That way the team can track user interest. 

What helps is making a specific request including what you would like to see. For example would you like the photos that are not backed up to be in a separate folder or, perhaps, see an icon or marker or text that would indicate what is backed up and what is not.

Currently the only way I know to achieve what you want in a Google photos is to use the free up space option. Go to Google photos profile icon and select the option for free up space. Google photos will remove locally stored photos that are backed up and leave only the items that it considers not backed up.

You can also go to Google photos Library, and open each folder there and see if backup and sync is turned on for that folder. That would indicate whether or not the item is backed up.

  • You permanently deleted it from your trash.

Check your archive
If your missing item is archived, you can unarchive it so it shows in your Google Photos library.

Attempt data recovery
If the deleted images were on your phone's local storage, you can try a data recovery application. I don't have a recommendation. Typically, you download the data recovery application to a computer, attach your phone to the computer via USB cable, and then run the recovery attempt on the phone's local storage. (Not on Google's servers.)

She created an google album in her account to automatically link my face and our son's face.

Hello Frances,
  1. Open Google Photos
  2. Tab Library
  3. Tap the desired folder under Photos on device
  4. Select photos by long pressing then tap others after the tick confirms the first selection
    • You can also long press and stroke down to select a batch
  5. Tap the 3 dot menu top right
  6. Tap Move to folder
  7. Tap New SD folder, type a folder name then tap Create
Note that if the photos are backed up to Google Photos this will not remove them from the Photos view and even if the new folder is not selected for Backup & sync any contents will still be deleted if deleted using the Google Photos app.
 
You should also have a setting in your camera app which saves new photos to the SD card.

You need to discuss this with the school administration team. Tell them you've lost access to photos that you'd like to transfer to a personal Google Photos account. If you've already had that discussion and they've told you the account is deleted, then I'm afraid you've lost the photos.
