To restore your photos and videos I suggest you to follow the below steps:

If you deleted an item and want it back, check your trash to see if it's there.

On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Photos app .
At the bottom, tap Library Trash .
Touch and hold the photo or video you want to restore.
At the bottom, tap Restore. The photo or video will be back:
- In your phone's gallery app
- In your Google Photos library
- In any albums it was in

If the item is not in your trash, it may be permanently deleted.

Don't see the photo or video?

If a deleted photo or video isn't in trash, you can't restore it. You won't be able to restore a photo if:

You moved it to trash more than 60 days ago.
You moved it to trash, then emptied your trash.
You moved it to trash more than 30 days ago on an Android 11 and up device, and it wasn't backed up.
You permanently deleted it from your trash.
You permanently deleted it from your device's Gallery app, without backing it up first.

To find and recover photos easily, turn on back up & sync.

Hello Maurice,

This is a very difficult question to answer as not all photos will be available for a number of reasons.

Old Picasa Web photos may be excluded

Anything uploaded with Backup and Sync will be excluded

If the folder has ever been deleted it will not repopulate with older photos

If you have a Google One account you can contact 1:1 Support and if they refer you back to here, ask why they can't escalate internally as we do not have access to Google Photos support and have only our experience to try and help,

How do you know that you should get 100 GB from Photos - if uploaded in free storage mode (High Quality), your bytes are compressed by a factor 3 on average at Google.

Maybe even more, because pictures uploaded via Picasa in the past were downsized much more.

PS: you should not experiment with other folders for Google Photos either.

Then it is not correct to say that Drive is full, but you may need to upgrade to hiring 200 GB soon for Photos merely.

I recommend that you look for the old photos here https://photos.google.com Be sure to sign into your account with the same Google ID you used on the lost phone.

Face detection is not working properly and can greatly be improved. Face covered with mask 😷 or face hidden with phone is IGNORED. It doesn't give an option to tell the app about the person (if it's not able to detect). Some of my best photos are excluded from my folder cause of this.

When Google's AI does not recognize it as a face there is nothing we or you can do.

You can add the photos to an album or add a name in the Description to be able to search for that photo.

When there is a masked face, you can at least ask users to identify them (as a choice of course). Even I'm a developer and I know it's not big deal for Google. There are also photos in which the AI hardly recognise faces in group photos (without mask). Don't know why Google is performing this way. I think you have a big room for improvement. Sure, I agree. In Picasa we could (and still can) "Add a person manually", that is draw a rectangle around a non-recognized face. But Google preferred not to look at what was already there and start from scrap. They seemed convinced that their AI would be sufficient, but it needs to be corrected and completed to be as good as manual tagging.

You can copy the photos & videos to an external HDD or USB storage.

Next, you can go for the "Free up space" option in the Google Photos app.

That will remove all the backed up pics from your phone, creating space.

Pixel 3xl was having unlimited storage quality at original quality till Jan 31 2022 after that anything uploaded at original quality will count towards your Google account.

please change the quality to storage saver quality which is free for pixel 3xl and then upload which will not count towards your Google account storage.

When editing is not available you can select the wrong photos, tap 3-dots > Remove results, hoping that Google will learn from it. But when both do appear you should not remove. Not very satisfying.

Google photos also show the images from on the device.

If you want to delete from the google photos then go to www.photos.google.com and delete those photos. then it will be deleted from the google photos.

To stop it from further backup,

Open the Google Photos app, click on your profile > photos settings> Backup & Sync and disable the backup toggle.
